Charge everything, sky's the limit. ----------------- The Daily Ottoman ----------------- "Our men will need Brillo pads to clean the decaying flesh of our enemies off of the streets when we are done with our glorious conquest!" So stated the Enlightened Emperor Henry "Hank" Arrah today while breaking plates with the third army stationed in Greece. "In a fit of benevolence, I proposed to the enemy vermin a peaceful surrender and end to the bloodshed, but it was rejected most harshly. We shall not make the offer again until the breath of every last French and English soldier has been stifled as if we had put thick garbage bags over their misshapen heads!" Reports from General I. O. Nyun's army stationed in Marseilles have confirmed civilian complaints that ten thousand cans of Lime-scented air freshener have barely put a dent in the inherent "rotten-anchovy-mixed-with-eggs" smell that seems to be present in all of the French cities. German armies have raised a similar complaint in Paris and in Brest though one German soldier in Brest said, "Sometimes we run out into the surf to smell the dead jellyfish, and, after staying in that city for 24 hours, it is indeed sweet." Press secretary Adrian Attik today also confirmed the Benevolent and Enlightened Emperor's previous statements that plans are proceeding rapidly in the attempt to "smoke out" the French vermin from the Italian peninsula. Reports from the Italian coastal provinces have likened the French navy's presence in the Tyrrhenian to "a living and moving oil spill." Spring '06 of the game MAELSTROM (BNC number 1989AA) Will be sent later today, one person goofed up. It only really takes 1 no vote to stop a draw. I'm sorry for the delay in this posting. This time it's all my fault. Maybe I should have bought that laptop to carry with me after all. Without going into great detail let us just say that the train ride home was at least interesting. I was going to say that our next dew date for orders was next Sunday, but as I have orders of file from all but two of you lets try for this Tuesday at 10:00pm Eastern time. Anyone wanting to change thier orders may of course do so before then. Oh, we have yet another proposal for a France/Italy draw, VOTE ON IT!!! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Also, could you post someone that I would like to know if anyone is interested in trying to play either War and Peace of Empires in Arms by Email. Thanks < Mark > Spring '07 of the game PEARL HARBOR (BNC number 1989AV) (GM is Adams@multiflow.com/Steve Adams) The proposal from Germany, England and Turkey for a draw has passed. As such, there is a 3-way draw between them. The vote was 4-0, with one player not sending a vote. Here is some press : France greatfully accepts the peace proposal. "Fidel Ottoman today declared to the Turkish people 'Peace in Our Time'. He was immediately hailed as the savior of the country and monuments honoring him have been built in every town. There is talk of sainthood for him. When asked what he would do now, Fidel replied, 'Wine, Women, and Diplomacy'" -Steve *************** Send your endgame statements to Steve! ****************** Fall '04 of D-DAY (BNC number 1989AW) (GM is Pav@cs.duke.edu/Paul Vick) Not received. I have been trying (20 different test messages so far) to reach Stewart Winter from here with no success. Anything I send to stewartw@cognos.UUCP seems to vanish without getting through or bouncing. It appears the MaryFW@cup.portal.com is having similar problems reaching me, so I will see if I can work out some alternate addresses to make it easier for players to reach me. In the meantime, I would appreciate it if someone who has a good connection to Stewart Winter would please forward a copy of this file to him. I am having no problems getting mail from him, but I can't seem to get anything back to him, even by "replying." Thanks for your patience everyone. I will be gone for this weekend, but I will be back Sunday night. I will do everything I can to try to get over these e-mail problems to put us back on a weekly basis. "The treatment of the Turkish minority by the Bulgarian government forced us to act. We are taking the necessary steps to protect our people." When asked about the atrocities reported against Turks in the other Balkan countries Mr Yilmaz said, "We will defend our countrymen everywhere. If Greece and Serbia do not heed this warning then we will have no alternative but to take action." Later, a government spokesman denied reports, believed to emanate from Austria, of a secret 'Black Sea Treaty' between Turkey and Russia. The Ankara Daily Press (21st August 1901) Opposition leaders have today gone into hiding following a clampdown on opponents of appeasement with Russia. The leader of the Turkish Free Market Party, Fikret Tamam, has been arrested following his speech yesterday when he accused the War Minister, Mr Yilmaz, of deception about the so-called 'Black Sea Treaty'. Mr Yilmaz was visiting the front line in Bulgaria yesterday. He assured the troops that they would soon have all the Ouzo they could drink. (Rome) Today the Prime Minister announced a declaration of war on Germany. An agreement for mutual defense had been struck prior to Spring 1901. Since Germany and England have jointly moved on France, Italy must come to her aid. Italian forces moved on Munich today, in support of her French allies. The people of Italy support this move whole-heartedly. ================================== Le Monde - October 26 1901 ================================== STORMS AT SEA ------------- The French First Fleet returned to its home port of Brest today after a series of training exercises in the Atlantic. The fleet will remain in port for the winter because of the damage it sustained last year from the violent storms in that part of the world. The Admiralty has long debated the need for an Atlantic fleet with many officers feeling it would serve France more profitably in the Mediterranean. The only restraining factor seems to be the ever present threat of the English fleets. ------------- ================================== Le Monde - October 30 1901 ================================== ALLIED PUSH ON MUNICH --------------------- The Parisian Legion began the defence of this country yesterday with the shelling of Munich in advance of the expected assault from our Italian allies on that city. No French troops will actually enter Munich due to the ill feeling held by it`s brainwashed citizens towards this country. The ill feeling is the result of the intensive propaganda that the facist dictator of Germany has exposed his people to. The Italians will treat the situation with caution and will grant the citizens every kindness. Germany now faces almost certain defeat with enemies on three sides and only the English remaining neutral on the matter. However it is unlikely that the Germans will sue for peace so the fight must go on. I would really like to create a seperate chapter for every 10 games. If anyone is interested in cutting and pasting one chapter, let me know. You don't have to be a Portal member since you could just e-mail the results directly to Portal members. You will obviously need the ability to create a mailing list, though. From Matt@oddjob.uchicago/Matt Crawford: That was a turn from a game of the "1914 Diplomacy" variant, which was published in The General around 1981 or so. I wouldn't mind running another game of that. Would you want to pick players through E.P., or should I just solicit on the net? I have the rules on-line to send to players, as well as a synopsis which helps players decide whether they want to get into it. The synopsis follows. If you want to recruit five players, go right ahead. Call the game NO MAN'S LAND. Matt An overview of the differences between 1914 Diplomacy and the standard game There are only five players; Italy and Turkey are "minor" (initially neutral) countries. Supply centers are captured by occupation on any turn, not just a fall turn. Instead of keeping one unit per supply center, countries earn supply points (SP) for supply centers they control. SP are spent on building new units and maintaining old ones. SP are also spent on all conflicts. SP may be given to other countries. All minor countries have one or more units at the start of the game. Armies may move long distances in a single turn by railroad, but the entire route traveled, except possibly the starting and ending points, must be within the home country and the route must be completely unoccupied by any other army or fleet. Supply lines must exist from the capital to all units or units disband. All supply centers must also have a supply line to the capital or they produce no income. Alliances may be formally declared. Allies cannot capture each others supply centers and may trace supply lines through each others territory. Fleets get two moves per turn if neither move is to a land space or in support of a move to a land space. Units which retreat in one season may not attack nor support an attack in the next season. Fleets cannot capture a supply center unless supported by an army. Also retreats to supply centers owned by other countries are not allowed without the permission of the owning country. Beginning in the fourth year, bombers may be built. Bombing a supply center causes it to produce no income for its owner. Bombers may defend supply centers against enemy bombers. Minor countries may be controlled by expending SP for political influence. Gaining control of a minor in this way allows a player to order the minor's units, but the minor is still treated as a separate country. Matt Crawford Those who are interested in this game send e-mail to me, i.e. Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com. **************************** QUIZ ************************************* From Kevin Sweet/Sweet@horizon.css.gov: Exerpts from "dip5" (GM Kevin Sweet) Spring 1909 (7 Oct 1988): England: A Lpl -> Wal F Lon s A Lpl -> Wal Germany: A Wal -> Lon F Eng c A Wal -> Lon What are the results for this turn? Is the German army in Wales dislodged or did the English fleet in London have its support cut? Taken from Excelsior #29: THE TOP TEN EFFECTS OF ANABOLIC STEROIDS ON POSTAL DIPLOMACY PLAYERS 1. Gross overlicking of stamps and envelopes. 2. Sends the GM a mysterious bottle of disgusting yellow liquid in place of an endgame statement. 3. Very sensitive to the use of the verb "to shrink" in place of "to remove" in Winter adjustment reports. 4. Tendency to suddenly pop armies into mouth at FTF games. 5. Writes very long negotiational letters that are virtually illegible. 6. Tends to get off to a good start; often trying to build units before Spring 1901. 7. Seldom, if ever, says No to any suggestion. 8. Tends to forget which country he is; assumes he's the biggest. 9. Sends conditional orders for impossible situations. 10. Constantly refers to the game as a "race". I am enjoying moderating this zine, keep that mail coming! Eric Klien Up
