I figured I'd go ahead and describe the basic Broad Axe Tavern game, and
let others contribute info if they wished.  I'm currently one of the
(many) meta-PC's (read referees) in the game, so I have some authority
with which to speak.

The game is basically an AD&D variant play-by-email game.  To play, you
should be familiar with basic role-playing games (see rec.games.frp).

information (how to get started).

In charge of it all is the meta-meta-meta-pc, Steven Gabai
(gabai@paul.rutgers.edu), who oversees all.  He came up with the idea, he
designed the basic background, and he gets more mail than he knows what to
do with.  Working with him is a variety of meta*-pcs, of which I am one.
We do the dirty work of running NPCs, designing smaller parts of the
world, like particular temples for the different gods, certain
professional organizations like Merchants and [ahem] thieves' gangs, as
well as businesses, countries, city governments, you name it.  Steve's
goal is to delegate as much as possible actual PC-interfacing to his
lieutenants.

The basic background is the city of Ghlerhovllen, in a world where magic
works and the secrets of high technology have been lost.  Ghlerhovllen is
located between the countries of Megara and Khotan, and has kind of a boom
town/border town atmosphere to it.  The players are both locals and
visitors, from knights and vagabonds to wizards and scholars.

As far as I know, the game is still open to people who want to be players
or want to help run things.  As Steve would say, "have fun!"
