BD1 Move Summary, Part 1 From: okamoto@hpccc.HP.COM (Jeff Okamoto) Date: Wed, 23 Aug 1989 19:49:23 +0000 At long last, BD1 came to an end. Triumphantly, the Russian Czar, Richard Gordon, declared that Europe was to be at peace. Enclosed in these two articles are the results of BD1. Because the game was blind, the players did not always know what was going on in the rest of the world. Congratulations to Richard and good reading to you all. -----cut here----- #! /bin/sh # This is a shell archive. Turkey's was one line long. X XAustria may have antagonized Russia with his move. Russia will have to Xplay carefully with Turkey against him. He and Austria may have grounds Xfor a quick alliance to neutralize Russia. X XEngland made a standard Churchill opening. I do not know what his Xrelations are with the other players. X XFrance appears to be defending against a German attack. X XGermany's rear may be in trouble. Losing the spy didn't help either. X XItaly appears to be making a Lepanto opening. With help from Austria, Xhe may pull it off. X XRussia could be in trouble if Austria and Turkey ally against him. XIn that case, he'll need Italian help. X XTurkey made a pretty standard opening. We'll see if he follows through Xon his stab. X XPlayer's Commentaries: X-------- ------------- X XAUSTRIA X XMy reasoning is as follows: X X1. I can trust the treaty with Italy, and by mutually moving away from X our boarder, we are strengthening that trust, as well as freeing X resources. X X2. Germany has gone to great pains to reassure me of our alliance, and X has even helped smooth things over with the Russians. Thus, I can X free up my forces in the North for better work. X X3. By moving N N Tri-Alb, and A Bud-Ser, I can assure getting Gre, Bul, X or Rum by Fall. Also, my N Tri-Alb can (hopefully) prevent T from X taking Gre. X X4. My move to Gal is simply because I do not trust the Russian, and X I would like a bargaining chip with Turkey. X X5. The spy in Bohemia helps me keep an eye on Germany, Russia, and Italy. X X6. The spy in Rumania gives me a better view on things between myself, X Turkey, and Russia. X XThat's it! X XITALY X X Austria and I decided to move our forces away from our border Xas a show of trust. I know he's going to move the fleet into Alb with Xthe intention of taking Gre, but I don't know what he is doing with the Xarmy in Vienna, thus, the spy in Tyl. X France and have reached a similar agreement about not occupying XPie, NAf, and the bodies of water in between. I plan to send the spy in XTyl towards the mediterranean to make sure France doesn't welch(sp?). X I plan to take Tunis with the army in Apu so I can advance my Xfleet(s) toward Turkey. Hopefully, Austria and I will gang up on Turkey. X XReason: No particular reason, just that I realized I have no reason Xfor the army to be in Tus. Thanks. X XRUSSIA X XI hope I'm not going to regret this, but Sultan Barry and I have Xcome to an understanding. Meanwhile, we've been pretending to hate Xeach other. Whether or not I honor our agreement to the end of time X(or whether or not he does!) remains to be seen. France and I may Xhave something going. Only his consort's hairdresser knows for Xsure. I am also toying with the British. Germany has angered me by Xa) threatening to block my F GoB->Swe next time if I move to Galicia Xand b) acting as if it is his God-Given right to take possession of Xthe lowlands and Denmark. Whatever happened to common courtesy and X"diplomacy!" Fine, I'll move to Silesia and see if I can take XBerlin from him in 1902! X XAddendum: Barry wants into the Black Sea this time to help Xhim dupe the Austrians. X XTURKEY X XI am moving against the Russians! Still not too many commentaries, but getting Xbetter. X XThe big winner this turn was Russia: who would have thought she could Xget THREE builds in 1901?! X XGermany made a big mistake by not fixing his move. He knew there was Xa Russian army in Silesia and ould have either defended with Munich Xor helped his attack by cutting Burgundy's support. He may not be Xlong for this world. X XEngland's helping France is a natural alliance. He and Russia could Xsplit Scandinavia and work on destroying Germany. X XItaly is playing conservatively. Nobody's attacking him, but he's not Xin a good position to attack anyone else, either. X XAustria is doing well, taking Serbia and Greece. Unfortunately, he Xmay attract to much attention -- like from Russia and Turkey.... X X XPlayer's Commentaries: X-------- ------------- X XAUSTRIA X XMy rationale here is as follows: X X1. It is possible for me to take either Greece or Rumania or both. X2. I have hopefully bluffed Turkey into thinking that I am intent X on taking Greece. Since I do not expect Italy to become X involved in Balkan affairs at this time, at worst I will bounce X with Turkey's A Bul this time still leaving myself in the better X position to take Greece next year. X3. I am trying to take Rumania in the hopes of getting both Rumania X and Greece either this move or the next. While I realize that this X will anger the Russian, he will be too busy with Turkey and Germany X to have time for revenge soon enough. X XFRANCE X XUm, commentary, France: X XMy first move was predicated on not recieving any response to my Xfriendly overture to Germany. Accordingly, I began to cast about Xfor another ally, because I decided that Germany was unfriendly. XI quickly reached an accommodation with England, establishing Xthe English Channel as a neutral zone, and reached a similar Xaccomodation with Italy in the Mediterranean. I hated to constrain Xmyself that way, but I now was committed to pushing northward in XEurope. X Since I suspected Germany of overtly agressive intent, I set a Xspy on the border at Burgundy to perform anti-espionage, which Xwas successful. This was additional confirmation of my diagnosis. XSubsequently, I received indignant protestations from Germany about Xhis intent. I replied placatingly, and invited a peace proposal; Xno response. (Germany claimed to have sent me a response before the Xfirst round deadline, which was possible; our mail system was down Xfor several days, followed immediately by my home system for another Xtwo days.) X Deciding that I surely had Germany as an enemy (and who are his Xallies?) I worked to cement relations with Italy and England. Because XI had received quite intelligent and charming communications from XRussia, I decided he would be my primary ally - this also delays any Xpossible conflict with my "best" ally. I rely on Russia as an Xintermediary with England. Unfortunately, I have no way to assure Xat this stage that England and Italy will cooperate with me; Either Xor both could ally with Germany and I think that a classic Axis is Xin development. Accordingly, I took the precaution of moving my Xfleet to Spain (SC) so I can defend/avenge Marceilles in event of Xa betrayal from Italy. This makes it impossible to hold a threat over XEngland, of course. I worry about this, because Germany is acting with Xfull force on me, leading me to feel that he doesn't worry about XEngland. X This round, when revealed, should tell the story about England Xand his intent. X I hope that a concerted attack by England, France, and Russia will Xroll Germany onto his back PDQ. Then, if Italy has honored our Xagreement, I will consolidate in Europe and move into Austria. XTwo very big ifs, of course. If both England and Italy betray me XI am doomed myself; I am just as vulnerable as Germany. X XGERMANY X X "Sekt oder Selters" is a german expression, that comments this oders. XIt means "all or nothing"... X XITALY X XAcquired Tunis with my army because I want to leave my fleet in the XIonian. I don't want anyone else to know my plans, so I'm performing Xcounter-espionage. I also want to know what France is up to. X XRUSSIA X XRevised Comments: X XGod only knows what's up. I lied to everybody last turn, and Xapparently, most everyone lied to me. I think France is my Xally--but this turn may tell the tale. England claims he'll help Xwith the division of Germany. I tried leaking to Austria that XFrance and I may try for Munich, thus setting France up to take XBelgium and me up for an attempt at Berlin. I am undecided whether Xto help Austria or Turkey. Current thinking in St. Petersburg is to Xtry and eradicate the Turks and help Austria. If things go as Xadvertised, England will support France into Bel (guaranteeing 3 on X2) while I gamble on Ber. In return, I will support England into XKiel and Denmark next year. Sooner or later, one of the three of us Xwill have to be cast out, but for now, I am hopeful of watching XGermany be strangled. X XTURKEY X XWell, it looks like it's me and the Russians against the Austrians and XItalians (bless their little hearts and pea shooters for trying. It Xshould be kind of interesting.) He Xcould easily take a dominant role in the game. X XFrance has irritated England and may have lost Paris to the German Xarmy in Burgundy. It depends on what Germany decides to do. X XItaly is attacking Turkey, but Turkey appears to be in a good defensive Xsetup. X XAustria's NMR may be fatal. We'll have to see. X XPlayer's Commentaries: X-------- ------------- X XENGLAND X XIt has been reported in the London Times, that due to further unrest Xon the continent, His Majesty Brooke III is planning to send an Xexpedition to the continent to try to quell the afor mentioned unrest. XIn a related news release, The Army has announced new expanded office Xhours for its recruitment center. and is inviting all able bodied young Xmen who are interested in seeing the world, to apply for "all expenses Xpaid" vacations to Europe. X XFRANCE X X England's actions seem highly suggestive of aggressive intent. Have Xto pre-empt by moving into the English Channel. Can stand down later if Xwe can smooth things out. Hate to be the first to cross the line, Xthough. I feel provoked not only by England's suggestive movement, but Xby his continual failure to communicate in a coordinative way. X XITALY X XI plan to attack Turkey by convoying my army in Tunis into either Syria Xor Smyrna. I'm also interested in a piece of Germany, since I've heard XBerlin has fallen and France keeps offering to help me take Munich. X XRUSSIA X XRevised Comments: X XThis is getting tricky. I'm going to be more agressive and ruthless Xthan usual here and see where it leads me. Probably to early Xretirement. My goal is to get a dual victory with France. My Ximpossible dream is for a solo Russian conquest....tough to do. X XSo far, I've sent in one set of fake orders for the British benefit. I Xwill probably submit one for the Turk's benefit. This set is supposed Xto stab the British (catching him unawares). It is also supposed to Xkeep the Austrians out of Ukraine. If he takes Rumania, I just try to Xsneak into Ankara (poor Turkey) or attempt to thrash Austria back out. XTough gambles have to be made here....I may gain 1-2 SCs or may lose X0-2. That's life. That's war. X XNew Revised Comments: X XAustria has approached both Turkey and me about an alliance-- against Xeach other!! We both assume it's a trick. Italy has remained very Xfriendly to the Tsar, even though he knows that Turkey's my ally. XGermany sent me mail claiming to capitulate totally and asked me to Xtell him what to order. I suggested he try to take Bel (figuring that XFrance and I can retake it in the Fall) and that he move to Tyrolia and Xtry for Vienna or Trieste. I assume that the offer was totally false. XFrance and Italy seem very close. But we originally thought Italy was Xin cahoots with Germany and Austria--time will tell.... X XTURKEY X XYou know, it's good thing that Richard is my friend and on my side. XOtherwise, we would both be crushed. I also hope to repay my debt to Austria. X XRUSSIA X XPersonally, I think I have over-extended myself. If France Xattacks London, I should be OK. Turkey wants me to do some troop Xmovements this time. I cannot do so without exposing myself to XAustria. I've told him I'll do it in the Spring. England needs to be Xknocked down a bit. Germany might survive a bit longer now. I admit XI'm trying to capitalize on the bad blood between Germany and France. XBut the bottom line is still RFT forever! The thought of Xlanding in Ankara next year is nice, however..... X XExtended comments: XI have decided that lying to Germany and England is an Xacceptable part of a sane foriegn policy. I just hope that XFrance doesn't begin to doubt my honesty. X XFurther comments: XThis set is a bit more conservative than my earlier set (submitted Xtwice). It means I cannot pick up 3SCs, but it doeas mean I have a Xbetter chance of at least picking up one more SC. Ger F Hol-Kiel could Xcut Kiel's support in my other orders (Swe->Den) even if France takes XHol. If England convinces Germany to do that, then England can hold 2 Xof the 3 SCs France and I threaten. With this set of orders I am now Xsubmitting, England cannot possible stay at 4 SCs unless he and France Xreach an agreement. I hope they haven't. I further admit that I think XEngland's leader is a better tactician than his German counterpart. XTherefore, I'd rather guarantee that he be shrunk. X XRUSSIA X XWell, at 9 SCs I've got to be careful to preserve my preeminence!! XEveryone may be gunning for me now. Sounds like what I said Xlast year, eh? X XTurkey's unexpected success against the Austrians makes him my Xmost potent ally. France is number 2. Germany seems favorably Xinclined as does Italy. Except that Italy cannot be my ally Xwhile I am allied with Turkey. He knows that. England and XAustria hate my guts. As well England should. But can he hold onto it? X XPlayer's Commentaries: X-------- ------------- X XAUSTRIA X X I have been out of diplomatic contact for some time now as other Xmatters have been pressing. In any case, it appears that Turkey and XItaly are irrevocably set against me, and Russia will obviously continue Xto press outward. After having an earlier round called NMR, I find Xmyself caught between a rock and a hard place. I am just curling up Xto protect myself and hope that some alliances will break before I'm Xgone. X X XFRANCE X XComments: Boy, is spring early this year. It's already getting hot! XI have to hope I have figured out Germany and England this time. I Xrecognize that if Germany has ordered A Ruh -> Hol then I'm in some Xdifficulty. However, in that case I am hoping to be able to overrun XBerlin or help Italy into it. I intend to keep whittling Germany at Xevery opportunity, given his stubbornness. Unless I misread England, Xhe won't be able to get to me this round, and if I get another build, Xhe is gonna be hurting next. Darn, but I want Paris back! X XITALY X XI am hoping to crush Turkey, and I am planning to attack Munich in the Xfall. I believe Austria has lost all trust in me, but hopefully he and XTurkey won't ban together. I still trust France, but I want to see what Xhe is doing in Spain. X XRUSSIA X XThe British are going to be a real pain. The Germans will die off by Xattrition. The other hard choice is what to do with the F Swe--put him Xin the Baltic to defend Berlin? put him in the Skag to attack XEngland? I could lose 2 SCs this time. Don't have any clue as to how XI can gain any without stabbing Turkey or France. X XTURKEY X X**** This week on World News Tonight **** X XThe Greater Turkish Empire, headed by the imperious and gratious Sultan XFausnaugh, has outlawed all Italians and Austrians. The Sultan said in Xa press conference "Since the Geneva Accords have not yet been signed, XI declare that all Turkish forces must kill, on sight, any and all XItalians and Austrians. I realize that my fighting forces are not Xperfect, therefore, it is permissible for Turkish forces to die in the Xatte attempt of tring to kill these retched beings.
