Diplomacy zine -- Chapter One From: daybell@sal-sun36.usc.edu (Donald Daybell) Date: Wed, 13 Sep 1989 16:03:36 +0000 issue 96 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL ----------- Chapter One ----------- This chapter contains results for the games D-DAY, NAVARONE, BLITZKRIEG, OPERATION OVERLORD, GETTYSBURG, and HMS HOOD Apologies for missing issue 95. I recieved so little for it that I forgot to create it. On a brighter note, we now have an official move from GETTYSBURG, the lost game. The orders for this game were found written on a scrap of paper hidden inside a bag of money believed to belong to D.B. Cooper. The final position of each unit is listed in all CAPS. If the final position is listed in <> then that unit must retreat. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Paul's Notes: The turn was delayed due to partial player error, partial mailer error. The orders in question were mailed on Monday but was delayed in mailers until this Wednesday. Overall this hasn't been that much of a problem (just problems with people disappearing on us or mailers dying), but I would not like to see it grow... Germany's Bohemia unit must retreat, but as there is nowhere to reateat to it must disband instead (and has nowhere to be built in the winter) -- France must also retreat or disband the MAO fleet. Disbands and retreats will be due this Sunday, September 10th at 12pm; Spring '07 will be due Wednesday, September 13th at 12pm. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Centers: England: 5 -1 / Lon, Liv, Edi, Nwy, [Mos], StP Germany: 6 +0 / Ber, Kie, Hol, Den, Bel, Swe Russia: 8 +1 / War, Sev, Rum, Con, Bul, Ank, Smy, (Mos) Italy: 13 +1 / Rom, Nap, Ven, Tri, Vie, Tun, Bud, Ser, Gre, Mar, Spa, Mun, (Por) France: 2 -1 / Par, Bre, [Por] Lost centers listed in brackets, centers gained listed in parenthesis (). -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Winter 1905 of game NAVARONE (BNC 1989AX) (GM is pwoodruff@orion.cf.uci.edu/ Peter Woodruff) Retreats for FALL 1905 AUSTRIA: A Ser - Tri TURKEY: F Aeg - Con Builds/(Disbands) for WINTER 1905 AUSTRIA: (A Ven), (F Alb) ENGLAND: (F Lon), (F Hel) FRANCE: F Mar, A Par GERMANY: A Ber TURKEY: F Smy Units: AUSTRIA: A Tri Vie Bud F Gre ENGLAND: A Nwy F Nth FRANCE: A Edi Hol Bel Mun Par F Wal Eng Mid Spa(sc) Mar GERMANY: A Kie Ber F Den Bal ITALY: A Ven Apu F Aeg Tyrr RUSSIA: A StP Gal Ukr Rum F Bla TURKEY: A Ser Bul F Con Eas Smy ************************** Pete's Points: Most of you have probably heard by now from Russia that he is going to be on a business trip (involuntary) from the 9th to the 21st; he has requested a delay of spring 1906 to Saturday the 23d. However, he has also agreed to submit orders early, if necessary. My preference would be to keep to the Sept 17 deadline announced in my last message, followed by a Sept 27 deadline for Fall 1906. But I am willing to bow to your wishes: please vote on Russia's request ASAP; a message with YES or NO in the subject line will suffice. I will send out confirmations of your standing orders for Winter as soon as possible. Also, I will begin posting a game summary with every winter turn which is simply a chart like the one that I'll be sending to the Diplomacy List Server at the end of the game. I may also begin posting other game statistics there if I hear from enough interested players. Winter 1904 orders are due Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 15:30 CDT. ************** Why was the Dreadnought built? "We said, let there be dreadnoughts. What for? We did not require them. Nobody was building them, and if anyone had started building them, we, with our greater shipbuilding resources, could have built them faster than any other country in the world." Upon further consideration, I have decided to put all non-GM press under the same heading, "From the Grapevine". I'll let you decide what is real. _______________________________________________________________________________ Daily Dirk March 19, 1903 Athens (Reuters): The Austrian Battle Fleet has set sail for points unknown, leaving harbor before dawn this morning. The Austrian secret police arrested several persons, whom they claimed were foreign spies, who were purported to have been observing the departure of the fleet. March 21, 1903 Albania (Reuters): Units of the Italian Main Fleet have been passing steadily by for the greater part of the day today, heading south. All of the local fishermen have put into port and refused to go out again. Tension levels are high all along the Albanian coast; everyone is wondering "Where are the Italians going?" March 23, 1903 Ankara (UPI): The Turkish government, in a surprise press conference, revealed the destination of the Turkish Combined Fleet which had steamed from port last week. It was announced that the Turkish Government felt it necessary for it to secure the important sea lanes in and about the Ionian Sea. March 24, 1903 Bengahzi, Libya (Reuters): The three major Mediterranian powers engauged in a titanic naval struggle for control of the pivotal Ionian Sea yesterday. According to reports, the Austrian Navy entered the area first, and began to lay hundreds of mines iin the area. Soon after that, units of the Italian Navy entered. Several Italian ships quickly struck mines, and the Italians commenced sweeping operations. They were able to recover a mine and found that it had Austrian markings. Failing to find any Austrian oil platforms, they settled for shelling the coast of Austrian-occupied Greece. It was at this point that the Turkish Fleet sailed in from the east. The first to encounter them were the Austrians. who tried to decoy the Turkish ships into the minefield. The Turkish, however, refused to bite, and commenced long-distance shelling of the Austrian fleet. At this time, simultanous news of both the Italian presence near Greece and the rumored advance of another Turkish unit from the Aegean caused the Austrian Admiral to lose his nerve and he ordered a full retreat. Meanwhile, the Italians received word that the Austrian Navy was steaming full-force in their direction. This coupled with the persistant rumors of a large Turkish presence in the immediate area caused the Italian admiral to re-evaluate his situation. Deciding that discretion was the better part of valor, he withdrew back to his positions in the Adriatic Sea, leaving Turkey with possesion of the area. _______________________________________________________________________________ From the Grapevine Berlin (UPI): After the discovery of the English troop manoeuvers today, the High Command declared a state of National Emergency, and imposed martial law. Curfew's were broken only with the storming of the English embassy. Fortunately for the Ambassador, the German government provided a safehouse and protection for him and his family. Others in the diplomatic entourage sought safety with trusted friends. So far, no deaths have been reported but one attache is missing, and may be held hostage. The embassy iself was razed by the angry mobs, incited by leaders shouting: The King is a Fink! Calm is beginning to return to the capital, but the English will have to completely rebuild their embassy and their reputation with the German people. ____________________________________________________ Rumors received from sailors arriving back in the Home Isles aboard hospital ships, claim that the English navy has begun bombarding the Scandinavian coastline. These reports could not be confirmed because the government of King John is still denying everything. ____________________________________ England (by diplomatic pouch): The King has held a conference with all his ministers to determine what can be gained from all the chaos on the continent. Without many firm allies, and having mad a bold move, England now finds itself the center of attention; an embarrasing position. Amends are being attempted with German, the major victim, but Germany appears to be acting cautiously. _____________________________________ Miaowara Shiro sent back to his parents; Miaowara Tomokato (Samurai Cat) resumes control of the Yellows. Miaowara Tomokato returned from holiday last Tuesday to find his strategic forces locked in a stalemate with Austria-Hungary. When asked about his nephew, he replied, "Shiro is merely inexperienced; he has not read the Art of War (Sun Tzu) yet. The dishonour is mine." In other news, Miaowara Tomokato announced that he is starting studies at the University of Calgary. "The University of Toronto has a better cognitive psychology group," he was quoted as saying, "but I REALLY don't want to live in Toronto." ______________________________________________ Vienna, Apparently some European rulers do not feel the need to take part in negotiations with countries which are not their allies at that very moment. We regret this very much indeed. _______________________________________________________________________________ Rear Admiral Donald Daybell ---Commander, HMS Hood **************** If you are interested in joining the fun here on Electronic Protocol, send mail to Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com including your name, address, phone, e-mail address, and COUNTRY PREFERENCE LIST.
