Sources close to the WEEKLY STAR-ENQUIRER NEWS EXAMINER have learned that Elvis is responsible. [In other words, I lost more press than I thought on that Summer cycle. Real sorry. It *has* been fixed. -ckd] ------ Rome (AP) -- The Pope today announced that a treaty has been signed with Turkey and Russia, ceding all rights to Trieste and Greece to Italy, while promising Russia the northern territories and allowing Turkey to take Serbia. When asked how he intends to enforce this treaty, given Turkey's current strong position in Greece, he allowed that it would be likely that Turkey would be permitted to retain Greece on the condition that its shipyards be destroyed. ------ PARIS (UPI): It has been confirmed that German sabotage was responsible for loss in communications in both France and England throughout the summer. French officials are meeting with their British counterparts to consider their options. MARSAILLES sic (UPI): Border patrols have spotted Italian armies in Piedmont. Officials quickly stated their hopes that this report was in error. ------ Turkey: Sultan enjoys salads. The Sultan is very happy with the shipments of olives sent back from greece. The Sultan was pleased with the latest training mission in the Black Sea and expects to have an operational fleet in the Med shortly. ------ Berlin, Germany. The Kaiser today announced that a state of war now exists between the states of Germany and France. This is believed to be a result of the Kaiser's second expedition to the French wine country, which was again met by a hail of gunfire and French jeers of "depart, lest we taunt you a second time!" Highly offended, the Kaiser immediately returned to the capital and declared war. Antwerp, Belgium. Sources in the German High Command indicated that the brief exchange of fire between British and German naval vessels off the coast of Belgium was a result of a misunderstanding. The German naval commander, unaware of the presence of British ships in the area, opened fire, mistaking the British vessels as a French flotilla. This incident marks a minor blemish on the otherwise highly successful negotiations between Germany and Great Britain. In the most recent round of talks following the incident, German diplomats requested that the British government clarify its position on the Belgian question. Belgium, ostensibly neutral in the current French/German war, occupies a strategic position between the two warring nations, and it is felt unlikely that either will treat the previous agreements to keep Belgium neutral as more than worthless scraps of paper. Many of the Kaiser's advisers on his General Staff are believed to be urging him to occupy Belgium immediately, despite the current misunderstanding with Britain. However, sources indicate that if England enters the war against France, the Kaiser may want Belgium as a staging area for the British Royal Marines. ------ London (Reuters) - Prime Minister King Edward VII was distressed to hear that the telegraph cable problem did cause a faux-pas in Belgium. He said, "We know that the Dutch are a people that are not easy to enfranchise. So we thought that the Germans would stay there longer to help keep them from revolting. We are now sure that the French sabotaged the cable, and wish to appease the German Empire with the act of attacking them. Unfortunately, we cannot help unless the BEF is in mainland France. However, if the BEF cannot form a beachhead on the Continent, the Royal Navy will attack the French elsewhere." ------ Taranto, Italy. Thousands of Italian soldiers appear to be fleeing the country, fearing the might of the Austrian war machine. After the sack of Venice, Austrian gunboats patrolled the canals seeking out straggling Italian soldiers. The main force of the Italian army withdraw in chaos from Venice, and a large number are believed to have deserted and fled overseas to Tunisia. ------ The governments of England and France today ignored the persistent rumors about combined Anglo-French amphibious exercises near beaches whose topography resembles that of Antwerp. ------ The Foreign Languages Institute today published its enrollment figures. The major trend seemed to be that many Italians were learning Albanian, while an approximately equal number of Turks were learning Serbo-Croatian. The surprising figures also indicated an increased enrollment of Russians in Hungarian courses. ------ No Germany, you CAN'T have Burgundy!!! ------ -- Christopher Davis, BU SMG '90 <ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu> <smghy6c@buacca.bitnet> "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand."
