BOSTON (GM) - The game master, Chris Davis, said today that he considered his results posting for Summer '01 "brain-dead" and that the Spring results "weren't much better, honestly." Sources close to this writer have discovered that key British communications were sent on a merry chase to a BITNET site by a rogue .forward file, while a German army was mistakenly reported as a fleet! In other news, Elvis sightings in Vienna resulted in a sudden Russian detour to see the fabled King. [*REAL* sorry for the screwups, folks. I'll endeavor not to let it happen again, lest you all convoy your armies *here.* --ckd] ------ RENEWED FIGHTING IN BURGUNDY! BLACK SEA "MANEUVERS" CONTINUE! VENICE SACKED BY AUSTRIAN VICTORY FLEET AS VIENNA FALLS TO RUSSIA! BOSTON (GM) - Franco-German fighting continues in the Burgundy era this year, even as joint maneuvers in the Black Sea result in more ship losses due to adverse weather. In Belgium today, German destroyers fired warning shots in front of a British convoy before retreating, themselves. In the south, Venice fell to a joint army-navy assault by the Austrians even as the Elvis-seeking Russians took Vienna for the Tsar. ------ Turkey: The Sultan, dismayed with the loss of part of the fleet to a sudden storm in the Black Sea, has ordered another set of maneuvers in the Black Sea. He hopes that the well trained sailors can be used as cadres for the soon to be constructed mediterranean fleet. Sultan upset over shortage of olives! Upon being served a salad sans olives, the enraged Sultan demanded an explanation. It was explained that the greek olive growers have been holding back olives in order to obtain higher prices for them and that it is impossible to get any in Turkey. The Sultan then ordered the first army to go to greece to pick some olives for his salad. ------ From the London Sunday Times (October 1901): Dover - An unfortunate mishap with the Trans-channel telegraph cable in June has just been repaired today. For the first time since the Spring, England can now communicate with the rest of the world. Chief Engineer Sir Thomas Moore was quoted as saying, "We cannot understand what actually happened with the cable; all we know is that we could receive any incoming messages but could not send any messages out. Actually, we suspect the French for this obvious sabotage, but we cannot be sure that they actually did anything." The lack of a full-operating cable seriously handicapped Prime Minister King Edward VII's attempts to form the alliances that he was so interested in obtaining. However, high sources in the government have told us that although his plans were set back somewhat, the King is quite confident that the alliance with the German Empire should be cemented any day now. Unfortunately, the lack of transmissions into England may cause a mix-up in the right of the soon-to-be allies to place armies in Belgium. By the way, this press is because I thought that I sent Summer press, but evidently you did not receive it. Sorry for the lack of English press in the Summer. [More mail foo at my end. Mea culpa. --ckd] ------ Rome (AP) -- The Commander in Chief of the Heavenly Hosts officially confirmed the vino for vodka rumours. As the First division continued its drive into Trieste, the Soviet forces made a surprise stab into Austria. Despite heavy losses to the forces of both countries, they claim that the eventual triumph of their alliance is inevitable. Meanwhile, Turkish forces moved to secure their strong position in the South. The earlier conflict in the Black Sea seems to have subsided, as both countries embrace the philosophy of Westward Expansion. We were unable to contact the Commander of the Austrian forces for comment. Rumor has it that he has left the country for an extended vacation on the island of Hawaii. [Press slightly edited to preserve meaning and remove conditional clause. --ckd] ------ Rome (AP) -- The Pope today expressed his continued confidence in the French-Italian alliance. When asked if he supports the French in their struggle to maintain possession of Burgundy, he declined to comment. "I feel that valuable lives are being wasted in that struggle, while the Master of the Northern Seas grows ever stronger. It is my deepest desire that these two countries bring this pointless bloodshed to an end as soon as they can find it in their hearts to do so." Reminded of an earlier comment about "dirty Germans", he claimed that it was only in jest. ------ French Press: MADRID (UPI): German terrorists have cut off all communication >from Paris to the outside world. At last contact, the French armed forces were preparing for Germany's second invasion attempt. Sources also indicate that French espionage has uncovered the conversion of Berlin's shock troops into SEALS. More later. (In other words, F Ber -> Kiel??????) [In other words, it was a long day. -ckd] ------ Austria delenda est! ------ Now, I have a problem. Germany starts with an army in Berlin. Was F Berlin > Kiel a typo on your part or his? Or does Germany really have 2 fleets? [My foul up. -ckd] ------ Foreign ministers of Turkey, Russia, and Italy met behind closed doors today. No official details are forthcoming, but most analysts agree that the subject is the partition of the former Austrian Empire. The logical division of centers is Trieste and Greece for Italy, Serbia and Bulgaria for Turkey, Budapest and Rumania for Russia. The fate of Vienna seems to be in doubt. ------ -- Christopher Davis, BU SMG '90 <ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu> <smghy6c@buacca.bitnet> "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand."
