PRESS: From the London Weekly Informer: Thousands fled the streets and residencies of Yorkshire this week as the evil German Empire continued its unbridled attack upon England. Several poeple were seen throwing pastries at the German soldiers chanting such insults as: "Take this to your bake sale!" and "German chefs go home!" Apparenly many people are still confused as to the nature and reason for the invasion. It is obvious that it is only a matter of time before the English Capitol is overrun, thus the seat of government is being moved to Stockholm. Only time will tell if the mighty English Emprie can be rebuilt. Germany: Every person having anything to do with the mail system has been shot, and the German Armed Forces is currenltly involved in recruiting new mail clerks. Normal operation will resume shortly. An official press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs From England: Some blatant and not-so-blatant truths revealed: - Germany and France have a rather strong alliance. Be warned eastern powers. Watch what France is doing along the A-H/German border. - Germany is not to be trusted. A little interesting bit of history. Germany approached us after the fall of '04 asking for support on an attack against Russia in exchange for the return of Edinburgh. Being desirous to have that particular site back, we agreed. However, Germany shrewdly deceived us into thinking that we had a threat to hold off from France, thus not only delaying our recovery of Edinburgh, but opening a foothold for further German advance forces on the British Isles. It is probably too late for us, but be warned! Strike no deals with Germany and France. Despite anything they may have told you, they ARE in league with each other. Be especially wary of one warning about the other. Austria: It was announced in Budapest today that the Austrian Government will surrender this fall to the combined forces of Russia and Turkey. When asked why, the head of Public Relations, Arnold Beastburger, remarked: "We hate those dirty scoundrels, and it grieves us to give up. But we would rather they have our land than those French swine. If there is anything we deplore more than the French, we have yet to find it." The first is about discovering other peoples identity. Well I don't know about Eric's feelings on the subject, but in my opinion it is against the rules of Gunboat Diplomacy to communicate, on the subject of this game, in any way except thru the press releases. Of course I have no way of catching ye or proving anything even if I do, and the world of Electronic Protocol is small, so what to do ? Well here are three solutions (1) Ignore the problem - My personnal favourite, all's fair in love and war ... (2) Turn the game into regular diplomacy. - Well if it gets bad, this would be the fairest solution. Or we could introduce a special rule for the occasion along the lines of :- (3) If you name another player and his country, you can get him ( or of course her ), thrown out and you get control of his units. But if ye both 'nuke' each otherin the same season, well I'm sure we're all familiar with Mutually Assured Destruction, i.e. ye're both atomic dust in this game forever more. So since I was asked I'll assume the worst, and my course of action will be (1) above. Unless of course the players ask in numbers exceeding three for one of the others, or if any one can think of a better solution, let me know. GM -> All : The question about conditional moves. For the coming season no way, just forget that one. But for next season depending on the results of this move - sure why not. Conditional press is another matter. I see no reason to ban that at all, in fact it makes perfect sense. By the way could ye all sort ye're press before ye send it, thanks. And if ye do send conditional press put the conditions of printing above EACH conditional piece - in simple english. GM -> All : Yes this is a tad late, about two weeks I think. Yes it is a fault at this side, but not mine. We are upgrading our facilities here which means chaos for some time to come. The computer I use - IRUCCIBM - is an IBM 4341, as old as the hills , assembled by Babbage himself. I think they plan to drag it outside, burn it and ceremoniously piss on the ashes. So watch out for address changes - probably to IRUCCVAX or something like that. DEADLINE : Whenever ye get the chance chums ! This has gone beyond funny. So England's retreat or disband asap. ********************************************************************** PRESS ***** Austria to Italy: Venice will be mine! ***** Austria to Russia: Please accept the gift of Budapest as a sign of our loyalty. ***** Austria to Turkey: Please accept the gift of Serbia as sign of our loyalty. ***** Austria-Hungary -> Turkey Please have mercy; I have enough trouble with the Italians. I recommend getting your fleets into the Med as soon as possible so that you don't become bottled up. ***** London, England (AP) The Prime Minister today called a press conference for the purpose of informing the English people of the current hostile situation in Europe as well as a public statement to the other members in the European community of Englands intentions. He noted that the German expansion is the most serious destabilizing threat on the continent and has ordered the English First Fleet, currently in the Channel, to aid the French in neutralizing this threat. He said, "The German threat to continental peace must be dealt with immediately and the English are committed to this task." Commenting on the French production of more naval assets he said, "I realize that the French need naval forces to protect her shores, but I impress upon our neighbors that the ships recently built in Normandy not be used to harass England in any way. An attack on the Channel will be treated as a directed attack upon the Crown and would have serious consequences. Neither of us can afford to beat on each other with such a serious threat as Germany poised to pick up the pieces." He also made the first public mention of the desire for Russian forces to participate in the destruction of Germany, but would neither guarantee nor promise declaring Scandanavia a demilitarized zone. "The English can not set back," he said, "while everyone else increases their production capacity. Our small and isolated island requires that we establish production capabilities on the European mainland. We certainly do not want to take any production centers that are within the sovereign boundaries of the Great Powers. Note that such restraint does not extend to the barbaric Germans." He made no comments concerning the Italians, Turks, or Austro-Hungarians. ***** London (UPI) - Her Majesty was reported to have cheered the German invasion of Belgium. By doing so, France was diverted from attacking England. "Now we shall be able to rid the world of the French pirates". ***** England -> Germany Communique from the office of Foreign Affairs I don't know who is trying to imply that I want your neck. I think that we both could chomp into France, but that damn French fleet in Brest is a pain in the ass. Recommend expansion into the continent. Your multiple fronts make the situation difficult and I have no recommendation for which threat to attack. I may be able to remove some Russian pressure by harassing them. I also recommend that the Turks go for the Russians. The Austria-Hungarians can be effectively bottled up without attacking them; the Italians and Russians will see to this. The Turkish forces can best be used to clean up the Russians. We can not allow the Russians to become strong early or we will all be in trouble. ***** THE PARISIAN PLATITUDE ---------------------- with Jeanne d'Arc This morning the Supreme Commander and Big Cheese of the French Armed Forces, M. Unpetit Dunpetit, proclaimed his horror at the continuing build- up of aggressive Germanic forces in the Lowlands area, and said that if at all possible, he would do everything in his power to prevent any further gains by the German war machine, which he likened to a marauding grizzly bear. In a later statement, Monsieur Dunpetit said that he had no quarrel with the British, and hoped that Italy would co-operate with England and France to 'Hang the Hun'. M Dunpetit also expressed 'profound dismay' at the situation in the Central/East European area, and said that he hoped everything would turn out for the best. He firmly rejected all accusations of speaking only in cliches and platitudes. ***** France -> England If you really wanted peace, you would never have dared to move into the Channel. Prepare for a full onslaught! ***** France -> Germany We should lull England into a false sense of security before we carve him up. ***** France -> Russia Do some damage to England in the North, while I take on England in the south. ***** Germany -> France My move into the lowlands was to ensure that they were secured against the English, and as a measure of your intentions. Thus I shall leave Belgium to you. I hope that my move of last fall did not overly hurt your plans. ***** Germany -> Russia A drive into Austria-Hungary is recommended; we may be able to assist. ***** Germany -> Russia It is not my intention to wage war with you. I will aid you in every way to rid the world of the English scum. ***** Italy -> A/H: Well you've obviously pissed off all of your neighbors. You will be crushed for your lack of foresight. ***** Italy -> England: Just didn't want to leave anyone out! ***** Italy -> England I don't know about Meditteranean expansion, the damn Austria-Hungarian units may not allow it, but it does sound like a good idea. ***** Italy -> France: Obviously our relationship is being undermined by Austrian subversives. There will be no movement toward Marsailles. ***** Italy -> Germany: I'll do my best! ***** Italy -> Russia: Perhaps you should review your use of adjectives. ***** Italy -> Turkey: Things are getting messy for you in the Black Sea area... perhaps I will be of some assistance in the not too distant future. Comments? ***** Russia->England Scandinavia is not for you. Too cold. Head down south toward Marseilles. They have much better weather and not as much military opposition. ***** Russia -> Italy Do not plan to take too much of the spoils. I am willing to share as long as I get the bulk of the booty!. ***** Turkey -> Russia Looks like Budapest will be might tasty in the fall. I might even be inclined to help using Serbia if it doesn't put me too far out of position after this turn. ***** Turkey -> Russia Splitting up the Balkans and Austria-Hungary sounds like an excellent idea. The Austria-Hungarians can not stop our combined efforts as long as the Italian threat is present. I think we can come up with an equitable division of production centers. ***** ********************************************************************** Winter '15 of the 1914 variant ENTENTE (MNC number 1989IJrv17) (GM is matt@oddjob.uchicago.edu/Matt Crawford) When I set a deadline, I reserve time to process the turn. "It should be one mile further north," said the royal surveyor, Fred the Giant Panda. "We think that the Germans have been slowly inching it in our direction for some years now, a few feet at a time." When asked what the goverment planned to do about it, Fred said that "we have dispatched three large surveying teams to put it back where it belongs." In other news, both the Austrian army in Serbia, and the Austrian fleet in Greece, accidently crossed into Bulgaria. "What do you expect when you are using maps bought from the Turks? The borders are all wrong," commented General Fred the Dwarf. When asked what he believed the Turkish response would be, he stated that he didn't think that they would any right to complain as it was "their own faulty maps that caused the whole problem." Back to you Roger. === Lisbon (AP) -- The French army is leaving Portugal, leaving only a token force behind. According to General Richelieu, "Well, we had our vacation, and now it's back to work. We had a great time down here though. And the populace has never been happier since we came." === Bucharest (PU) -- Turkish army devoured by sharks! In a tragic accident, an entire Turkish army was devoured by sharks as they vacationed at the Black Sea resorts. Local merchants were not dismayed, as new tourists from Austria were reported at the border. Scientific sources say the large shark presence so close to shore was related to heavy fleet actions by the Russian and Turkish navies. As Turk troops moved into position to defend their northern coast, Austrian officials denounced the Russian attack as being barbaric. Meanwhile, no evidence has been produced to support the Russian claim that the Turkish fishing vessels were in the process of attempting a sneak attack against Sevastopol. "What fool would attack the Czar's empire with a fishing boat?!" exclaimed one Austrian diplomat who had just returned from meetings in Constantinople. Austrian citizens in Galicia demanded immediate protection against the Russian Army positioned just miles from the Galicia-Rumania-Ukraine border. Military experts predicted that Rumania, without a major defense force for the last several decades, would be the next logical target for the "Russian barbarians". They anticipate a bloody battle as the Turkish army continue their movement up the east coast of Bulgaria. While Austria's own southern command continue to work in grief stricken Serbia, plans are being made to support Turkey "in whatever way necessary" said one official. When asked if this extended to the building of a stronger Mediterranean Fleet, the offical responded "If you mean a *Turkish* Mediterranean Fleet, yes. Our own resources are best used to defend the peace in eastern Europe and that means we need to build a stronger army." There are conflicting reports arriving from areas in western Tyrolia where Italian police units moved to quell riots which erupted after months of brewing civil unrest. Tyrolian officals claim that the move by Italy was unnecessary, that "matters were under control" while Italian sources report that German agents were secretly at work to undermine the efforts of the recently concluded peace conference held in Rome last week. Germany's absence from both that and the Tyrolia governing meeting and their military action against Denmark seem to all support Italy's claim. Meanwhile, the unrest experienced in Tyrolia seems to have spread to bordering areas of the Bohemia region and to the suburb slums of Munich. While French newspapers reported the recent developments of their wine and martini industry, there was no mention of the army exercises in the Burgandy region near the German Border. Commented one Austrian reporter, "If we can see the war from Budapest, surely the French can see the war from Paris". England ------- The King of England still wishes to avoid a war with Russia. I hope the Csar realizes that he has worse enemies to fear than England. "We have no desire to occupy St. Petersburg or Sweden." The King is still hoping to receive information from France and Germany concerning their intentions. England will not attack if not provoked. To France - I would like to declare the sea provinces of NAO, Irish Sea, English Channel, and MAO as neutral. ie. neither of us will send fleets there. After you move to Portugal, moving to MAO will not be considered a kind move by the king considering the threat it imposes on Liverpool. Is that acceptable? To Germany - What sort of neutral zone would you like to work out? To France and Germany - what's going to happen to the poor Belgians? Italy ----- Venice(CNN) - An emergency shipment of every kind of Italian olive known was made today to the Martini Project in France. Rome(CNN) - The Austrian and Italian War Ministers Meet with French England and Russia Late for Meeting Rumors of an Austrian-Italian-French Alliance are getting stronger here as we get reports of high level planning meetings in progress for future campaigns. (The Italians wish to point out that F Ion-Gre, A Ven sup A Try-Tri would garauntee an Italian build at the expense of Austria, but in the interest of future cooperative efforts, this option was disregarded.) Russia ------ Moscow Daily News The Czar went berzerk! Upon hearing that Russia is dead meat in the game between powers in Europe, the Czar had a nervous break down and had to be rushed to a nearby mental facility. After the administered drugs took affect, the Czar was quoted as saying, " Tea in Moscow? Tea in Moscow? Tea in Moscow?" Turkey ------ The Austria and Turkey have signed a peace treaty and will work together to defend against their northern aggressor. Meanwhile, Turkish forces continue to pound on Russian forces and have gained considerable ground due to the ineptness of the Russian generals. ============================================================================== Orders for Winter 1901 due as soon as possible : Thanksgiving looms. From what you've been saying, your holidays don't overlap very much at all, + there will be at least 1 person away at all times between Nov 15 - 28. So, try to send builds very soon, and send in orders for Spring 1902 as soon as I forward the builds on Monday next (Nov 13). That way, results for Spring 1902 should be out on Wednesday, Nov 15. Any Mars build will require a move by F Naples to the Westerm Med area. To England: Might as well try for St.P and Swed before someone else gets them. Maybe you should consider the possibilities of a Eng-Fra-Ita-Aus alliance vs. Germany. To Austria: Any fleet build will necessitate an eastern move by F Naples. I still want to cooperate, as my last move shows, and I would suggest that you and I and France could easily take Germany. To Germany: Convince me otherwise. France ------ The Eiffel Stump ================ In a recent new conference, President L'Pew announced an agreement with England to declare the naval provinces of NAO, and Irish Sea as neutral zones. He strongly objects to the declaration of MAO as a neutral zone since it would greatly hinder the manueverability of the fleet. He feels that letting it sit in Portugal or moving it to Spain (nc) is totally ludicrous and moving it to Spain (sc) is totally out of the question since it might provoke unnecessary feeling in the Italian leader. He has promised, though, to let it sit in MAO and patrol the area. As far as English Channel is concerned, he feels it might be necessary for him to move the fleet there in order to keep Germany out of Belgium, but if the great king of England would be so kind as to help the President out in this endeavor with his fleet in North Sea, then it will be completely unnecessary to move the fleet anywhere. Later in the day, the President held another conference and announced that he regrets the congestion that his armies have caused to the Italians when they were trying to get to the Oktoberfest in Munich, and he will gladly step out of the way, and even will send some carts to help move the supplies of the Italian army into Munich. In return he would like the Italians to help him get into the very productive region of Ruhr since he has heard that the Germans were experimenting with some kind of olive gene splicing and would like to get his hands (and mouth) on them. He has also extended the warmest wishes and many thanks to the Italian leader for the multitude of olives sent to him. He understands completely that man cannot live on wine alone and sometimes he needs beer and martinis. As a side note, he would like to inform the Great Leader of Italy, that the army stationed in Marseilles is there to protect the wine yards of Burgundy while the other armies are on manuevers, nothing more. FLASH!! The Parliament has approved the possibility of Italian-Austrian-French alliance, but before they sign the treaty, they would like to hear the details of the said treaty. Austria ------- Austrian officials were shocked at the blitzkrieg attack used by Turkey to capture the home port of the Sevastopol fleet (leaving some reporters asking, "isn't 'blitzkrieg' a *German* word?"). "Apperently we underestimated the strength of the Turkish soldier," commented an army general in eastern Serbia. "Perhaps they don't need as much help as we thought... but make no mistake, we will be there when called upon." The general refused to comment about his own army's advance on Warsaw. While the military build up continues, the navy made plans to return to home port to take a much needed (and deserved!) rest after several months of providing support to the Balkan areas. "We understand there might be a shooting war brewing here in the Mediterranean... and we don't want our boys caught in the middle!" said one ship's captain. The cause of political unrest in Bohemia was determined to be a lack of beer whose flow from Munich was cut off as Germany enacted their unilateral trade embargo against all countries supporting the French/Italian venture into the martini market. After a promise of renewed support was issued by the government in Budapest, Bohemia now seems to be quiet as people prepare for a *very* cold winter without German suds. England ------- Another plea to the Csar of Russia - we mean you no harm. Germany ------- Munich - Several parties of obnoxious foreigners were reported and summarily ejected from Octoberfest this year. When asked about the incidents, one official commented, "The french pig-dogs and italy scum are just intolerable! One would think that they have no beautiful women or good beer in there countries.... AH! Now I see." Berlin - The german chancellor called upon the Austrian government to uphold their responsibilities as chairing nation of the Tyrolian compact. "The Italians have entered the former Austrian province of Tyrolia and are currently fouling the once-beautiful city of Salzburg. They must be stopped!" To England: Friends do not need a neutral zone, but might I suggest Belgium(I don't want a french speaking country, just provinces :^). To Italy: Brew your own beer and lay off the martinis. ****************************************************************** 1. Couldn't mail results yesterday (Monday) as all orders weren't in. 2.
