The deadline for Fall, 1904 is thus ***Sunday, November 12 at 10PM EST*** PRESS GM-Board: I wonder what the record is for the most years played without a summer retreat season being needed? Player-to-Moderator: So, do you ever wonder what sort of machinations the players make? GM-Player: Yes, I am curious at times. If you want to send me any comments on your perspective on the game, you're welcome to do so. I will hold any such comments in strict confidence, and in fact I won't even reply to you for fear of imparting some information you shouldn't have. You should make sure not to include your comments in a section marked "Press", though, or they'll be printed! England: England would like to make it known to all other countries that the Germans can not be trusted in any way, and any word given my them will not be kept. UNITE and rise up against the German empire! Grammar Police: >Circus World Times : > > The Austrian Minister of Culture has announced that the revival > of the Greater European Circus is emminent. Of course, the best part of the old Circus > was it's excellent clowns, both excellent and varied in expression. ^^^^ I already told you what to do. > Oddly enough that is the main reason for delay in the revival, the ^^^^^^^ word order: is that > modern crop of Clowns is just too numerous, it has been difficult > deciding which of the applicants are the biggest clowns. P.S. The Latin person should have said "In Roma" instead of "In Romam". The latter conveys motion into, the former implies being in Rome. Boy, what a bunch of illiterates. From The Naples Daily Monitor: Sources today indicated that top government spies uncovered secret communiques from the French and Austrian governments indicating possible cooperation by these two countries in the destruction of the Italian Empire. In an unrelated story, The Ninth Annual German Bake Sale was a huge flop this year due to concerns by participating countries that the ships carrying their chefs would be sunk. Italy: French scum are to be driven off the face of the earth at all cost! Rally behind the Italian flag and we shald rid Europe of these vermin once and for all! France: Due to developments of late, the French would advise against all further cooperation with the English, as they are snivelling pigs that refuse to honor their commitments with anyone. France calls on all countries of Europe to band together to wipe out the English. Russia: The Russian peoples have declared war on the filthy English swine and will proceed to wipe them out with the help of our German and French allies! GM-Board: The English aren't too popular these days (at least that's the impression you get from reading the papers!) Anonymous: Dateline Munich --------------- It seems that the latest protest from the English about German beer prices has not gone unheard. As we go to press, this paper has become aware that the German head of state, or Kaiser as he likes to call himself, has decided to heed the English warnings and lower the export price of German draft beer. Not only that, but it is said that the Kaiser plans to have his navies personally deliver the first shipment of the lower priced beverage. -taken from the New York Times Germany: Attention! The Kaiser wishes to make it known that the German mail system's performance is now working perfectly, as those responsible for shooting those responsible for shooting the orignal postal minister have been shot. To prevent futher problems (or perhaps in anticipation of such problems), said people have also been shot, and those who shot said people have just shot themselves. Thus, no more problems. Somewhere in the night the Austrian national anthem can be heard ("It's fun to stay at the YMCA, it's fun to stay at the YMCA..."). Capitan DeCapo of the commisary was pleased to report that he now has a secure source of fresh hops for il Duce. The women of Vienna were particularly pleased at the arrival of so many "straights". Il Duce met with the President of The United States today who appeared surprised to see so many Italian soldiers in the city. His comments ironically reflected the situation, "The Austrians are really pumped now". Elsewhere the Italian fleet has put to sea in force to hunt down Austro-Hungarian commerce raiders. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TURKEY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After days of investigation, the Turkish secret police have discovered that a postal worker was trying to overthrow the Turkish government by putting important diplomatic letters in a mail queue which never got processed. It is suspected that this postal worker was an agent of a foreign power. This mail queue is now beign processed and it is expected that the Turkish mail facilities will be soon returning to their usual confused state. The Sultan would like to appolgize to any European power which receives old out of date mail or duplicate copies of mail. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GERMANY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sorry, Russia. I am only doing this because he promised me Belgium. However, if I do not infact receive belgium you can rest assured that my entire goal for the rest of the game shall be the destruction of the British Isles, anyone wishing to help me in this, if I do not get belgium, just send me an emissary and we can discuss it. England, if you supported me in to Belgium we will be "best buddies" for the game. If not, there is going to be a lot of saber rattling. (UPI)- To assist in the anschluB of our germanic cousins we are moving to Silesia to protect our Eastern border and ensure that the ra materials vital to our econonmy remain open. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AUSTRIA-HUNGARY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apparently, there has been some confusion regarding our invitation to the courts of Europe to attend the Vienna Opera. We distinctly remember NOT including a bring-your-troops-with-you proviso. There is simply no room for them. You see, at the military insistence of the Czar (who apparently is unaware of more sophisticated means of persuasion), we have had to relocate from our fair city in order to accomodate the Italians. It is really no surprise that they are here -- you all know how Italians love their opera -- but we can't keep them. Since there is a continent-wide war taking place, we can understand royal reluctance to travel without protection. Therefore, we propose the following solution: everyone can come to Vienna with their troops, but you'll all have to take turns. Since the Czar has been so rude lately, we are extending our first invitation to the Kaiser. The Czar may follow. Providing the Sultan remains friendly, he may come after the Czar. Le Roi shall follow the Czar, and since it is such a long way to travel from England, the King shall attend our final and most polished showing. This leaves only one problem. Once one is in Vienna, one never wishes to leave. Therefore, we shall, in all fairness and politeness, remove our guests from the city each fall, wherupon we shall occupy the city and prepare it for our guests the following spring. We recommend that you come to a territory near Vienna one year ahead of time, so that you can support us in our efforts to reclaim the city during the fall. This way, you will assure yourselves of a pleasant stay the following spring. Circumstances may force a change in the order of our invitations, but we hope to accomodate everyone as soon as possible. The State Department has reiterated its position that Austria-Hungary is likely to maintain its current position as a major European power. Back to you Tim. === HUGE EARTHQUAKE SHAKES ITALY AND FRANCE Paris (AP) -- A giant earthquake registering 7.0 on the Richter Scale shook much of France and Italy yesterday. Experts place the epicenter in the Gulf of Lyon, just south of the Piedmont province. Estimates of the damage are still coming in, but it's likely to be in the billions of Francs. The most damage was reported in the formerly industrial plains of Switzerland. Huge mountains have formed, destroying the entire industrial economy, and making the entire country impassable. In Paris, the King of France was reported to say "Oh, I thought it was the peasants [rioting]" after being told of the earthquake. He later toured the remains of the Louvre, which collapsed as a result of the quake. He proclaimed: "Well, I didn't really like any of those paintings anyway". When asked about the damage to other Paris buildings, he responded "Well, I haven't seen this much destruction since the war.". When asked which war he was refering to, he responded "World War II, of course. You know, Hitler, Nazis, and all that? Oh wait, that hasn't happened yet.", which leads this reporter to believe that the King was more stressed than his apperance led on. Early estimates speculate that millions of bottles of Champagne may have been upset by the quake, which would be a devastating blow to the King's wine party, which has been rescheduled for next Tuesday. In Italy, the damage was far worse, as they were closer to the epicenter. Originally all communication with Rome was cut off for several days. Later, when communication was reestablished, early reportes quoted various officals in Rome saying "Has anyone seen the Vatican?" In Venice, the canals were blocked off, and have slowly drained off, creating a huge transportation nightmare. Work is progressing to unblock the canals, but estimates say it may take up to two months to get the canal system working. The mayor of Venice was quoted as saying "We'll have to trudge through the sludge for a while". The Pope, thankfully on a visit to the American continent, was reportedly drunk at the time of the earthquake, and when asked to comment only laughed maniacally, saying "Hell, why do you think I was over here?" It is uncertain when France and Italy will recover from the quake, But, in a surprising show of support, all the other great nations have agreed to delay the movement of their military units to give France and Italy time to recover. ==== Moscow - A german fleet mistakenly blundered onto the site of soviet war games in Scandinavia. Although the German representative was not available for the Tryolia Semi-Autonomous Region Governing Board meeting, the Italian and Austrian representatives felt that immediate action was necessary and ordered the peace-keeping force to restore order in time for spring planting. The area is VERY quiet now. England ------- The King of England hopes that the Czar received the offer of peace in our previous message and eagerly awaits a response. The King is also eagerly awaiting any word from the Continent on the intentions of the peoples of France and Germany. England does not wish to harm anyone but will fight to defend herself. Austria ------- The Austrian Ambassador to Italy today met with high level officials of the Italian government in preparation for what is already being called the "international peace conference". The summit meeting, which includes the leaders of Austria, Italy, and Germany, begins tomorrow in Rome. High on the agenda is the Tryolia issue of self-rule for that region. The civil unrest in Galicia appears to have settled, at least for the moment. The recent news reports of Russian armed forces massing near the Ukraine border have been discounted as those forces appear to actually be headed south toward the Black Sea coast. Speculation from an anonymous source suggests that the Russian army will participate in training exercises there later this summer. Reports of regional conflicts continue to dominate the news from Northern and Western Europe but Kaiser Franz-Joseph refuses to discuss the issue in public. But in private, officals close to the Kaiser report that they fear widespread war can not be far away. They continue to be seen meeting with representatives of the Ottoman Empire in an attempt to draft a non-aggression pact before war errupts in Europe. Despite their best efforts, rescue personnel have been unable to reach several areas left devestated by the recent Balkan earthquake. The request for assistance by Serbia was answered quickly as several thousand men from the Austrian reserve army were mobilized. As many major roads remain impassable, food and rescue supplies are being shipped in through the ports of Albania and Greece. Russia ------ Russia to Austria: We love you. We'll do anything you want. Russia to Germany: We hope we can keep you happy. France ------ The Eiffel Stump ================ Paris - The president has confirmed the agreement between Italian and French governments to try to come up with the best wine the world has ever tasted from the Piedmont region. The president has also announced that in a secret laboratory, for the last few years, top scientists have been trying to discover the perfect martini (they got sick of just pure wine). It is believed that they are extremely close to the discovery but think that the final step might be to find the right type of olive. In a world-wide search for the perfect specimen, thay have narrowed their search to the Iberian penninsula. It is expected that an expedition will soon be sent to collect and bring back all types of olives. Unit Positions : --------------- Russia Armies : St Petersburg, Ukraine. More than any other country, Germany starts off with three builds and in a matter of years is eliminated before the end-game. By building three the first year, the Germans attract too much attention and it also spreads the Germans out too much, forcing them to be defensive in the Spring of 1902. Note that all three of their new supply centers border the North Sea. Thus England with one fleet can tie down an enormous number of German units. The goal for the Germans should be securing steady expansion of immediate strength. In line with such a policy, the Germans should position their to allow for a smooth flow of offensive moves from the beginning of 1901 straight through the early part of the game. This cannot be done with the Germans being tied down on defense all along the North Sea. In considering the three most probable enemies, England, France, and Russia, the Germans can secure a more promising position against Russia and England than it can against France. By more promising, I mean one that will lead to a quicker realization of expansion and also allow for a greater degree of diplomatic flexibility. With a 'northern' game in mind, the German plays the following moves int eh Spring of the first year: F Kie-Den, A Mun- Ruh, A Ber-Kie. On the surface, it appears to be a traditional German opening, while actually it is the springboard for an interesting set of German moves north. The use of the traditional opening gains time for the German player as it allows for him to determine if anything terribly strange is happening in the game, like an invasion by Russia or a fight in the channel. In this time period, the Germans can continue to negotiate with both the Russians and the English to determine which one will be the object of German aggression. If France remains peaceful and diplomatic climate is appropriate, the Germans can play a gambit by sacrificing the attempted third build for a better position in the north by moving: F Den-Ska, A Kie-Den, A Ruh-Holl. The Germans then gain a powerful position in the north. They can evict the Russians or aid them and still have enough strength up north to avoid a double-cross. Also, there is the possibility of informing the Russians and the English of your intended move to Skaggerak and spelling out designs against the other. Thus the English could then see the move as anti-Russian and the Russians see it as anti-English. The following builds -- F Kie & A Mun -- still do not reveal the exact intention of the German High Command and allows even more time to see what is happening diplomatically across Europe before a clash of arms commits the Germans one way or another. In the Spring of 1902, the Germans can play against Russia or England and move with reasonable chances of success. But note that until the second spring, it is not possible to determine the German intentions entirely by a reading of the units on the board, for the moves give the Germans ample flexibility in deciding on their target. Now should the English object to the German move to Skagerrak before the moves takes place, the German can play an interesting variation and gamble for more position at the cost of less flexibility. For if the English play to the Skagerrak, the German can change his move to read F Den-Nth. With the English playing to Skagerrak, the Germans will succeed in getting into the North Sea and the English position is exploded as the High Seas Fleet makes to the open sea. Such a reverse can be rewarded by the rousing of the Russian suspicions of the English. When the English move to the Skagerrak and Norway, the suspicions will be confirmed and the friendliness of the Germans secured by their commitment in battle over the North Sea. With such an array of moves, the diplomatic possibilities increase and the English position can crumble not only on the board but in the embassies of Europe. Thus, the Germans can, by delaying greed and playing a "Jutland Gambit", secure a greater position and prolong German Expansion through the early phases. Taken from The Watergate Vol. 1 Issue 9: So Many Backs, So Little Time by Ronald Kelly It is my opinion that the earlier one uses the stab in a game, the less are his chances for a win in the game. If we assume proper play on the part of all countries, and that one isn't allowed unnatural gains by one or more neighbors excessing NMR'ing, dropping out, or agreeing in advance to settle for second, then if one is going for an 18 center win, it will probably be necessary to pull a stab somewhere along the way. However, one who starts the game by making a firm alliance agreement with all of his neighbors, and then stabs one of them in 1901-1903 will find that his chances for success in the end game are greatly reduced. An outright stab this early in the game, no matter how successful, will only alert the other players that they cannot put their faith in any agreement you may make with them. Since you will probably not be able to find anyone else to work with you again, you will probably reach your highest point in the game after that initial stab, and go downhill from there. At the very best, you and your partner in the stab against a third partner in the stab against a third country may be able to form a small stalemate line, but in all probability you will be on the way to elimination. In a well played game, it is impossible to start the game with an outright stab, and stab your way on to a win. There are just too many backs, and so little time before the other players recognize your unreliability and join together against you. The name of this game is *Diplomacy*, and if you work at the art of diplomacy you should be able to organize attacks against other countries, in cooperation with one or more other countries, which will be strong enough to work without your having to make promises to the intended victim which you do not plan to keep. By the proper use of diplomacy, you should be able to work your way up to being one of the two or three leading powers sometime around 1906. It is at this time, when it is clear that a stab will either give you an immediate 18 center win, or put you into such a strong position that your winis inevitable, that you can properly consider it reasonable to stab. But remember, don't start off the game with a stab. There are just too many backs, and too little time. ************************************************************************ I need more scribes!
