Summer '05 press due 11:59 pm EST Tuesday. Press: ------ The Sultan again calls for the Kaiser to aid us in our fight against Russia. It is very unlikely that Russia will settle for a joint victory with Europe available for the taking. ------ London (Reuters) - His Majesty the Prime Minister held a press conference today concerning the latest Anglo-German offensive in France. He was quoted as saying, "Right now the BEF is preparing to take Paris with the help of the German Empire. We are also preparing to expel the French fleet from Scotland. We hope that these manoevers will succeed in this year, and we can finally start rebuilding the Royal Navy, and freeing the oppressed peoples of the Iberian peninsula." ------ The mobilization of yet another Soviet army in the northern theatre is feared to be a direct threat to German interests in Scandinavia, particularly the still-unstable government of Finland, which has recently declared independence from the Soviet Union. As a result the Kaiser has ordered a general mobilization of German army units on the eastern border. It appears that the Soviet proposal for peace may be but a ruse. ------ Hey, Italy? Why don't you go pick on somebody who isn't being attacked by 2 other countries already? ------ The power struggle in the Kremlin seems to be shaping up, with a new anonymous group replacing the old anonymous group. The unofficial official statement from this group begins: "We intend to continue to fully support the unofficial foreign policies practiced by the previous group, which of course was actually us, because we never have power struggles in the Kremlin. Anyone who thinks so should come visit, so we can shoot them for treason." CINC Northern Fleets issued a statement praising German suggestions that Scandanavia be demilitarized. "We are taking steps to insure that our posture in area in question be as defensive as possible. We would like to see a demilitarized region created from the following areas: Finland, Livonia, Prussia, Silesia, Bohemia. Naturally, we welcome any suggestions from Germany as to the best way to achieve this result, or *any* other reasonable demilitarized zone which meets German approval." CINC NF also said, "We welcome German suggestions as to the proper use of our northern naval forces in the western theater. We are prepared to enable Germany to capture London or Belgium on moment's notice. The continued whining of the English Capitalist Running-Dogs has ceased to amuse us. Countries which can't even defend themselves against French attack do not deserve to prosper. Think of it as evolution in action." General Molotov, commander of the Army, issued a statement endorsing the proposed demilitarized zone. He also noted that the elite Tyrolian Mountaineers would be available in the Fall to support German forces in Italy following the successful recapture of Trieste in the spring. ------ WSGB Diplomacy #2 - DILITHIUM Spring 02 "Good moves. Those of you taking time away from your machines for Thanksgiving (those of you in the USA that is :-) .. please let me know when you will be gone! If everyone will be gone, or a majority, the game will be delayed... if one or two people are leaving I'd prefer to see backup players take over temporarily. Of course, if the consensus is delay of game, the game will be delayed. :-) Press: ------ Istanbul to Paris (UPI): ``Well, as long as puns seem to be in the order (Go Brest young man), "There's no place like Rome. There's no place like Rome..."'' ------ Kiel (Le Monde): This port city was lit tonight by fireworks in celebration both of the initial cruise of the new naval vessels and also as a fitting end to "Franco-German Friendship Day", where this reporter saw thousands of German schoolchildren waving tiny French flags along the roadside in an attempt to divert the thrust of French land strength from Germany. A close personal friend of the Kaiser, on hand for the christening of the flagship Konig (sorry about the lost umlaut), was heard to say, "It is unfortunate that there have been so many misunderstandings between the German and French peoples, but hopefully coming events will help to ease tensions." Herr S_____ was asked about the willingness of the Kaiser to support French ambitions in the south, and stated that he had no comments which could be put on the record, but that "personally, I still think that the root of all the communication problems was those conspiring Medicis down there..." In the only sad note of the day, KRAP arrested the new head of the Ministry of Information after serious leaks to the press occurred this winter. The Kaiser was quoted as having said, "I think I was hoist by my own petard on this black press stuff." It is unknown what the actual motivation in releasing classified war plans directly to the press was, but well-placed sources have stated that "it was done in an attempt to cut through the fog of war and get something accomplished, but then the fog vanished and we were left, to coin a phrase, stark raving naked." It is expected that KRAP will soon be replaced by a more efficient police force with a better moniker, if the Czar sends the promised training aids via the northern route. ------ Moscow(UP) - Czar to Kaiser: I am assuming that 'Black press not in use' includes the Winter turn and that your message was real. About building a fleet in St.p(nc) - I WANTED to so badly that I could taste it, but I had a fit of prudence, and thought that 2 units in the Austria/Turkey maelstrom was a bit thin for good relations. Oh well. We can still do quite well in the English area though. My Warsaw unit is no threat to Germany, as my move will show. By the way, on my Winter press I was a bit confused about the seasons for various things. I think what I meant was obvious though. I am all for you taking the North Sea in the Fall. Good Plan. You will know as soon as I do whether I have Norway in the Spring. If not, maybe in the Fall if you interfere in the North Sea. ------ Moscow(UP) - Czar to Sultan: Armenia is right out! So is the Black Sea. If we fight, Austria will eat us both for breakfast on this front. And I will make sure that he gets any southern Russian spoils, not you. Think about it. If The Prince ends up in Rumania after Spring, and you don't help me kick him out, then kiss your chances goodbye, because I will go down fighting you. And then rebuild from the north and crush you. Of course, if all that press was black, and you are still my ally, then none of this applies. Think about what will happen to you with a powerful Austria as your ONLY neighbor. I think that with Italy's offer of help on the west, Austria should not be hard to stop. ------ Istanbul to Roma (AP): ``A spokesman for the R&D Weapons Department in Ankara announced the inauguration of the new press flamethrower for dealing with those press statements that "really deserve to be singed". Flame on: The Sultan requested a declaration of war against the insignificant Catholic regime of Italy on the grounds of being a smart-ass in past press statements. The Sultan himself added, "Besides how can I ally with anyone named after a Shakespearean character?" Look Prince Iago, I am perfectly aware of the threat the Czar's fleet continues to pose in the Black Sea. Maybe I have decided that the Lepanto is more of a threat (which it is) which explains the build in Smyrna. Besides, for someone who claims to be so knowledgeable in tactics and the game, I do not have fleets "none of which are on the Black Sea". If you had any idea of the game, and had been paying attention, you'd know it is practically impossible for Turkey to not have a fleet bordering or in the Black Sea for Spring 1902! Pay attention!! I had a fleet in Constantinople the whole time. Just because the GM says it's an army doesn't mean it is! And is there a house falling on this witch? Well, if there's a three-way alliance against any country, chances are said country will not survive. Since the chances of an alliance with you are slim to none after you read this press statement, I just have to hope Austria does not ally against me, don't I? If so, I guess I just have to hope for a FEG to hit you from behind. Flame off: The Sultan hopes that the Crown Prince recognizes the threat Italian naval power poses to both our nations and acts accordingly.'' ------ Berlin (CNN) The German government today released a hardcover edition of "Communiques that had no effect on history : Press of the German Empire 1901", the first in an expected 12 volume set from Time-Life Books. The special discounted price is only 1 supply center for the first volume. Keep it, and another will follow about every year, at the regular rate of 2 supply centers per volume. Send it back and receive a full refund, minus shipping and handling. There's no obligation, so order now. NOTE: no, folks, I'm not really that cocky, just in a weird mood. ------ Munich (CNN) The Kaiser, in town for the dedication of a new beerhall for the Munich garrison, released this statement to the press: "As a gesture of peace toward our French neighbors, we have decided that it would be best if the Belgian people were helped out of the aftermath of the tsunami by a country who spoke their language. To facilitate this, I have ordered a unit of Combat Engineers to detach from the division now conducting exercises in the Ruhr, and make all haste to the border between Burgundy and Belgium to repair the roads and bridges that the French will be using as their peacekeeping forces move in. It is hoped that the French will take advantage of the wonderful weather along the Riviera this summer, possibly even bringing Monsieur President's yacht into the Mediterranean (with appropriate escorts, of course.) Unfortunately, due to the espionage problems, it is expected that the French will be moving in force toward Germany. One hopes that the President will remember that Sardinia, Corsica, and Morocco are rightfully French possessions, and that Germany has never attempted to cross the border into Burgundy." "To our Russian friends--the building of an army in Warsaw vice a fleet in the north was greeted with some trepidation by the Grand Admiral of the Kriegsmarine, but the Chief of Staff of the Landwehr convinced him that it was destined to move in support of the Black Sea Fleet. Nevertheless, it does mean a more difficult time for the units on the northern flank. Hopefully the armored cruisers now departing for their shakedown cruise off the Danish coast will be able to take up some of the slack. Until the position of the French is more clear, it is felt that a garrison in Munich will be necessary." "It is hoped that our Russian friends have thought about what the English fleet which is expected to depart from Norway will make her next port of call..." ------ Istanbul to Vienna (AP): ``Your silence is disturing. Who do you think the Russo-German alliance is going to hit next after England. I remain committed to an alliance against the Czar. Please reciprocate by helping me break up the imminent Lepanto.'' ------ Istanbul to St. Petersburg (AP): ``Your witch hunt may go on but I shall remain committed to breaking you in the south. If I had been more awake when I wrote out my Spring 1901 moves, Sevastopol would've been mine!'' ------ Istanbul to London (UPI): ``From one witch to another, here's to survival. At least France has openly attacked Germany. I still haven't the slightest of Austrian intentions. Good Luck. We'll need it.'' ------ Naples (IAC): Prince Iago scorns the Sultan's olive branch. We are content to play second fiddle to Austria, who can at least be trusted to keep his armies on land and his boats in the water. No Italian can sleep safely while Turkish war galleys roam the Eastern Med. Austria: I presume we are cooperating against the Turk. Might I request that your fleet, wherever it has gotten to, be ordered to support the Italian fleet in the Ionian to the Aegean (If you're already by some miracle in the Aegean, support ION -EMS. France: Best of luck against the Hun. I think you might find F Brest to have been more useful than A Brest, but with four armies I guess you'll go for the Big Push' around Verdun. Hard to believe that nobody's bothering the English... ------ The French government announced today acceptance of the Italian proposal to keep the Western Mediterranean and the Gulf of Lyon neutral and empty. A spokesman was quoted as saying "Both our nations have more pressing problems elsewhere. It would be silly for us to fight." The French ambassador to England spent this week in secret conferences with high military officials of the English military. Reports from insiders suggest that England will support the French into Belgium this fall to keep it from falling into German hands. In a related story, several Austrian officials were invited to some of the meetings in London this week. Speculation is that Austria will send an army into Tyrolia or Bohemia to help the French seige of Munich. ------ -- Christopher Davis, BU SMG '90 <ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu> <smghy6c@buacca.bitnet> "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand."
