German troops are currently defending valuable iron ore shipments from Sweden, crucial to the war with France. Sweden's strategic resources have previously been the cause of dispute between Germany, England and Russia. With the Soviet occupation of Norway and the imminent invasion of Anatolia by Russian maritime forces, the Swedish question pales in comparison. With the announcement of German interests in Scandinavia, military advisers were reportedly sent to support the growing independence movement in Finland. Analysts indicate that an alliance with Finland may turn out to be crucial around 1941. In an apparent concession to the Soviets, the Kaiser ordered the exercises being conducted in Silesia terminated, and the participating troops have been redeployed to the Western Front. Elite landing units of the Kriegsmarine were sent to defend the Scottish coasts. The German government refused to comment on reports of looting by the German sailors, but has instead emphasized that this action is "purely defensive" and "in the interests of the British people." The German High Command hopes that any action in Scotland involving German forces is short, as Germany has little interest in maintaining troops on British soil. In apparent reference to the Serbian terrorist attack, the Kaiser condemned the use of terrorism and assassination as political tools. The Kaiser reportedly much favors the gentleman's duel of honor to resolve such conflicts. ------ Turkey: Sultan considers converting to Catholicism. The Sultan was quoted as saying "If the Pope's troops can pull off a miracle and save are us from the Russian hordes I will convert to Catholicism." ------ London (Reuters) - His Majesty the Prime Minister was appalled by the French invasion of Liverpool. He was quoted as saying, "We have already repelled the invasion forces, and they will not attack the British Isles again. The BEF is at this moment attacking the French region of Burgundy, and soon France will have to capitulate." Meanwhile, many members of Parliament are worried about the Russian presence in the Norwegian Sea. An anonymous M.P. was quoted as saying, "We are gladdened by the German Empire's promise that no English soil will be taken by the Russians. We have to use all our available forces to help the Germans destroy France. We hope that soon we can rebuild our fleets and help the Germans with their next invasion." ------ Russia: Although no surviving political leaders have yet been identified, the first official statement since the Turkish-backed terrorist attack on the Kremlin was released today. The statement called for joint political management of Europe by Germany and the Soviet Union. "The USSR is not interested in squandering a great deal of time achieving sole dominance; a two-way draw would end untold human suffering much earlier." Soviet military planners, unsure of the political ramifications in the above statement, neverthless agreed on its good strategic sense. Since the German and Soviet forces currently hold one battle line stretching >from southern Turkey to the northern seas, a cooperative effort would not have to worry about any flank attacks and would allow overwhelming concentration of forces in the forward areas. Needless to say, any subsequent treachery would disintegrate the battle line and result in a quick destruction of both parties by the remaining nations. The combined northern naval power could sweep the English off the high seas and the land forces could easily overwhelm Italy, as Piedmont could be defended forever by support from Tyrolia. ------ WSGB Diplomacy #2 - DILITHIUM Fall 1901 "Abbott and Costello Tour Europe" Results: [Final Position] (Failed) {Retreats} <GM notes> #stupid# Austria: Italy: F Alb-[Gre] A Apu-[Tun] A [Ser] SF Alb-Gre F [Ion] C A Apu-Tun A [Tri] Holds A [Ven] Holds England: Russia: #(A Lon - Nth - Bel)# <No Such Unit> F [GoB] C A Liv-GoB-Swe F Nwg-[Nor] A Liv-[Swe] #(F Nth C A Lon-Bel)# <No Such Unit A Lon> #(F [Rum]-Bud)# <no water route> #A Yor unordered (holds)# A StP-[Fin] France: Turkey: F Mid-[Por] #(A [Ank]-Sev)# <not adjacent> A Mar-[Spa] (A [Bul]-Rum) <bounce F Rum> (A [Bur]-Bel) <bounce A Ruh> (F [Con]-Bul) <bounce A Bul> Germany: F Hel-[Hol] A Kie-[Den] (A [Ruh]-Bel) <bounce A Bur> No retreats. [I'm too tired to do it now. --ckd] Press: ------ KEYSTONE KOPS, ABBOTT, COSTELLO, MONOPOLY MAN IN EUROPEAN CAPITALS BOSTON (GM) - It has been revealed that Prime Minister Highbrow is really one of the Keystone Kops, the Tsar has been replaced by Abbott & Costello, and the Sultan is the mustachioed Monopoly Man. These incredible revelations were discovered by your roving _WEEKLY MIDNIGHT STAR-EXAMINER-ENQUIRER-NEWS_ reporter when England ordered a unit to depart from London--when it was really in Yorkshire! "Bloody foul-up, it was," claimed one member of the British First Army in an interview. Equally strange are orders from the Tsar to have the Russian Southern Fleet head for landlocked Budapest (though some claim he expected Elvis and Bigfoot to carry the sailors to Budapest in UFO alien spacecraft) and the Sultan's orders for the Turkish 2nd Division to move directly to Sevastopol from Ankara, "without passing go. Or Armenia, or whatever that is." [Earlier reports of Leona Helmsley in Constantinople were in error.] [note- all GM press will be clearly marked as "BOSTON (GM) -" and no ultrablack (i.e. fake GM) press will be allowed. I'll usually only drop in press when I'm struck by a passing fancy (or Green Line trolley :-) --ckd] ------ PLAGUE!!! This is a warning to all foreign governments. An epidemic of "Blacker" Plague has struck the northern regions of East Europe. Any travel to those areas should has been declared as "hazardous". Please stay away. ------ Copenhagen: "The one-liner returns and under the Kaiser's warty nose all along. Preserve Danish freedom! Death to the Kaiser!!" ------ The *extremely real* Crown Prince of Albania would like to state that all of you are certifiable knee-biters and he would like to challenge all of you to simultaneous one-on-one duels. ------ Berlin (CNN) The German government today released a short communique to heads of state around the world. The full text follows: "The Kaiser's press secretary was hanged today following disclosures that he had been drunk while writing communiques. He was arrested by KRAP (the Kaiser's Rather Awful Police) shortly after the morning paper hit the streets. This morning's paper included such mistakes as suggesting that the French move into Holland, and the early divulgement of the Kaiser's plans for Denmark, after which the revelation that two carloads of beer had disappeared from the 'peace train' to Warsaw was the final evidence needed. The Kaiser sends his apologies to the Czar (along with more beer) and would like to discuss getting some decent training (and a decent acronym) for his secret police." "As some of the Kaiser's intentions were expressed incorrectly and there have been attempts at sabotage of free communications, the Kaiser hopes that none of his neighbors will be surprised by any of his moves, as he seeks, in a purely humanitarian gesture, to grab as many supply centers as he AAAAUUUUUGGGGHHHHH...... Please be assured that the problem which led to the preceding has been dealt with. All neighbors of Germany: you have our apologies. K.R.A.P. ------ Concerned with the state of affairs and alliances in the east, the French president today sent emissaries to England and Germany, suggesting that a triple alliance with these two nations might be the only way to defeat the Russo-Turkish alliance which seems to have formed. Although no representatives were sent to Austria and Italy to discuss the situation, the president did recommend that these two nations join together and organize a military thrust into Turkey to stop this "international danger" before the Russo-Turkish hordes are rolling into Munich and Venice. ------ Source purporting to be the origin of the one-liner: "German military leaders expressed confidence that an alliance would soon be effected with the British against the Czar, if only out of necessity. An alleged member of this shadowy group who wishes to remain anonymous said, `The Kaiser is an idiot and does not understand that the one-liner serves to benefit the German Empire.'" ------ Prince Iago of Italy deplores the massive disinformation campiagn being waged by 'unscrupulous beer-addled Krauts' and warns that if it continues, the Army of Venice may decide to have a schnitzel roast in Munich. With the Kaiser's schnitzel.... ------ Istanbul (UPI): ``The Sultan expressed dismay that a communique to the Crown Prince was not issued in time to discuss joint action in Greece and Romania. As a result, action was made that was deemed the least threatening. A unilateral attack has been made against the White Navy stationed on the mouth of the Danube in the hopes of an inland diversion >from Serbia. At the same time, units have been ordered to steer clear of the Peloponnese until a mutual understanding is concluded. It is hoped that joint naval maneuvers will begin next year to control the strategic Ionian Sea.'' ------ Moscow (UPI) - Czar Nicholas and Sultan Reach New Accord The details remain secret, but the Czar and the Sultan made simultaneous announcements of future partnerships in various endeavours. The first task seems to be the liberation of the Balkans from foreign occupation. Talks are still underway to form joint expeditionary forces, with massive Turkish fleets and tremendous Russian armies (who needs guns, we have millions of swords!). We have reports of new Turkish fleets are under construction already in Smyrna (hint, hint...). ------ London (AP) - In a conference this afternoon, Prime Minister Highbrow stated that he really didn't know who put the horrible press in for England in the Summer, but that he suspected the Russians and the Germans, and would like a word with the Kaiser and the Czar. In addition, the landing site of the first convoy was "your guess as much as mine." ------ Austria wishes to pronouce its suppport toward the Turkish Empire, but can seem to be able to spell Konst^H^H^H^H^HConsten^H^Han... their capitol's name. "We hope for a productive relationship between the Turkish Sultan and ourselves" announced their Foreign Minister. ------ London: "The King announced general mobilization of all forces for the northern defense. A spokesman for Buckingham Palace commented, `We cannot allow the aggression of the Czar to continue unchecked across Scandinavia. His Royal Highness has pledged to preserve the freedom of Norway against the unnatural designs of Russia. It is just typical of a relative to practice such treachery. The Czar is power-mad and we must end his lust now.' His Majesty and Czar Nicholas are distant blood relatives." ------ France-Germany: Support me into Belgium and you've got a deal. ------ Moscow to Germany - You are welcome to help keep the English Imperialists out of Denmark. I shall eject them from Scandinavia if they are so unwise as to protrude their presence into our midst. The Russian forces in the north are purely for the safety of our allies in Norway,Sweden and Finland. Unless England pursues a course of war, that will be the end of it. You have nothing to worry about in any case. (Except for which peices of England you fancy - let's negotiate that). If you are worried about my fleet in the Gulf, let me get it out into the Atlantic and it will bother you no more. ------ New York (Post) - News Flash: Italy and Turkey Declare War on Austria More info in tomorrow's issue... ------ Roma to Moscow(Reuters): ``Care to join us in Budapest???'' ------ Istanbul to St. Petersburg (AP): ``A spokesman for his Majesty, the Sultan, reported that the Sultan had requested a declaration of war on the Czar for his inhumane treatment of witches. "It was thought that we may have difficulty in relations with our northern neighbor on the account of the authoritarianism inherent to the state religion," he said. "The fact that the Czar has declared open season on witches makes it even more likely that he will do the same concerning Muslims. We must stop this trend before it spreads out of control." '' ------ (Roma) Sultan, support A TUN - GRE in the Spring and you shall be well rewarded with Serbia, Budapest, and Vienna. Russia has turned their back on you; strike Austria now! ------ Up
