WSGB Diplomacy #1,2 - COCHRANE Sum04, DILITHIUM Sum01 From: ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu (Christopher K Davis) Date: Wed, 01 Nov 1989 06:05:17 +0000 Happy Halloween. WSGB Diplomacy #1 COCHRANE Summer 1904 "RED STORM RISING" [Title suggested by Russia. Of course. -ckd] Moves: No retreats this turn. Press: Rome (AP) - The Pope today was not surprised to learn that his prophecies had been fulfilled. "I could see it coming two years ago", he claimed. He was mildly disappointed that Russia would now be allowed to grow even stronger, but he welcomed the chance to renew an old alliance with Turkey. Given the recent developments in the field positions, it is rumored that the beleaguered garrison in Venice will be supporting a Turkish naval assault on Trieste. There is talk of a fleet of 10,000 gondolas with fierce Eastern warriors bearing long poles and wearing funny clothing. It is expected that German assistance will be required to subdue the Russian bear if balance is to be restored to Europe. Currently the Germans are in a position to destroy England, Italy, or both. It is expected that the Russian ambassador will make many promises in return for the cooperation of the Germans. It is not expected that any of these will result in lasting benefits for anyone except the Russians. ------ Turkey: Sultan sick of eating fish. The Sultan today decreed that plans to continue fishing near Italy should be called off since he has had fish for dinner every night for the last 6 months and is sick of it. The Sultan is gravly disturbed about Russian violations of neutrality of the Black Sea and the foward positioning of troops in the Balkans. The Turkish high command in consultaion with the Pope have agreed to try and halt the Backstabbing, Godless Russians from ravaging Europe. We have agreed not to attack any Italian units or supply centers. We will accept the support of Serbia into Trieste (the high command hasn't decided if that move will really occur yet, but Venice doesn't have anything better to do and the threat will keep the Russians guessing). If we do not attack Trieste we will provide support to Venice to keep the Russians out. To all nations of Europe, it is obvious that the Russians cannot be expected to keep any agreements as they have betrayed all of their allies at one time or another. It is hope that if some of the northern countries can take advantage while the Russians are fighting in the south, the additional pressure will give the southern defenders a chance to regroup and liberate wrongly seized territories. ------ The German High Command recommended that the British Expeditionary Force attack French positions in Burgundy, with German support. Additionally, they strongly suggested that British fleet units in the North Atlantic push the French out of Liverpool. Monaco became a German protectorate today as the King of Monaco agreed to an extended "understanding" with Germany. Terms of the treaty ensured Monaco of self-determination in internal decisions, but granted Germany power over all foreign and military affairs involving Monaco. As a result, the entirety of the French and Italian Rivieras have been annexed to Monaco, increasing its tourist trade and GNP over tenfold. ------ The Kaiser today requested that the Pope order Italian fleets into the western Mediterranean, to threaten French-occupied Spain. While the Italian fleet has recently been involved in a dispute over fishing rights with Turkish trawlers, due to the recent fishing treaty violation by the Russians it is believed that the Turks are likely to withdraw to defend their fishing rights in the Black Sea. ------ Pravda: (Moskva) The list of Politburo members surviving the treacherous attack on the Kremlin remains undisclosed. Given the lack of political leadership, command of Soviet armed forces has passed to local military commanders. The Moscow militia revealed that the Serbian terrorists have admitted their employ by the Sultan's secret service and have been promptly executed. As a result of this announcement, the militia has been ordered to protect foreign citizens, especially those of Germany, during the ensuing anti-Turkish riots. General Voroshilov, commander of the Galician army announced that his troops were lacked proper training and would be returned to Warsaw briefly. "We hope that the German military exercises in Silesia will terminate, and those troops return to Munich to face the French hordes. After our September drilling, our soldiers will be ready to avenge the treacherous Turkish attack on our leaders." Marshal Budenny, commander of the Balkan Army group was enraged at the refusal of Turkish occupying forces to allow Soviet investigators into Serbia and ordered all three army groups and the supporting naval contingent to capture Serbia and Bulgaria in order to prevent the escape of other Serbian terrorists to Turkey. "The task of assisting our German allies in capturing Venice must now fall to the Tyrolean army." The commander of the Tyrolean army, General Suvorov, confirmed that his forces would assist the German army currently stationed in Piedmont in assaulting Venice. "The German positions captured so valiantly in the battle for Marseilles, cannot be held against the French forces in Burgundy, Gascony and Spain. The conquest of Venice by our German allies in Piedmont would not only allow the creation of additional units, but would also provide a retreat path to the embattled defenders in Marseilles." The Red Banner Fleet Northern Command requested that the German troops stationed in Sweden terminate their touristic excursions into Sweden, as the sailors currently on leave in St. Petersburg will be stationed there in the fall. Admiral Trotsky, of the Norwegian Sea fleet expressed his displeasure at the assignment of his troops to assisting the St. Petersburg fleet. "We would much rather be helping our alliest take Edinburgh, even though the pitiful English shore defenses require the guns of but a single German ship." He subsequently noted that the naval facilities in Denmark do not provide the same level of realism as training on the waters of the North Sea. ------ London (Reuters) - His Majesty the Prime Minister was quite pleased to hear about the German capture of Marseilles. He was quoted as saying, "The BEF is ready to close in on the Burgundy region to cut of any French move to the east. However, if the Kaiser himself has any suggestions, we will be happy to oblige him." ------ NEW YORK (UPI). Jimmy "the Greek" is giving 3:2 odds that the Russian offensive on the southern front will open with the Red Flag Fleet taking Ankara, and the Soviet army occupying Hungary spearheading an invasion of Serbia, with support from Soviet army elements in Dalmatia and Rumania. The recent wave of Serbian terrorist attacks on Russians is believed to have spurred the Soviet Union to war. It is believed that a Turkish naval bombardment of Trieste, supported by an overland attack by the Italian army in Venice, is the Turk's best chance to stave off the Russian advance. However, seeing as how Turkey and Italy are in a state of undeclared war, "the Greek" offers only 1:8 odds of this happening. ------ Sardinia (United Press) - The Italian governor of Sardinia held a press conference today confirming reports that Corsica is now Italian. He said, "As was reported last year, as long as the Germans took Marseilles, we could take Corsica, which really is Italian more than it is French. So, we did. Causalties were virtually non-existent since the French had deserted the island. However, we are overjoyed to finally restore Corsica to the Italian lands." ------ WSGB Diplomacy #2 - DILITHIUM "The Next Generation" Moves: None. No retreats were necessary. Fall moves due 11:59 EST Wednesday. The press should be *very* thoroughly mixed. "Why do they call emacs a text processor?" "Ever see what a food processor does to food?" Press: ------ New York (The Post) - RUSSIAN CZAR HATES WITCHES We have it on good authority that the Russian Czar, Nicholas, is afraid of witches. It seems that he has even confided his loathing to France and Germany, in private diplomatic messages, we have on good authority. We have correspondents standing by in strategic areas to watch for wiitch burnings. We have also tracked several russian students and embassy personnel on trips to public libraries in Massachussetts, in the Salem area. It seems that he wants to research the issue in detail. ------ England to France - Excellent foothold shaping up. Lets think about extending it. ------ Bulgaria (AP) - The Russian fleet in Rumania and the Turkish army here in Bulgaria have been performing joint maneuvers this Spring, but there is no word yet on where they are heading next. They look to be settling in for the summer to enjoy the weather, although a quick march to Greece may be made to test out some new wagons that have recently benn aquired. ------ Austria to Italy - Let's party Munich while the Kaiser is dawdling up in the Northeast. I'll bring pizza, you bring girls, and Munich has plenty of beer (but feel free to bring some wine too). ------ Prince Benito Iago Machiavelli announced that Trieste and Venice have been demilitarized in the interest of better mutual relations with the Hapsburgs. This was a needless source of tension between the powers, which are otherwise on very good terms. ------ London(AP) - Greek Resistance Gearing Up for Action The Greek resistance (always in good practice and ready to go) is back on the move as the Austrian armies sweep thru the Balkans. There are very well armed, but the source of the weapons is unknown. They seem to be confident that liberation will arrive soon after the Austrians. ------ Warsaw (CNN) - The beer train from Berlin arrived today to the cheers of the entire city. Poland will long remember the generous German Kaiser. One strange thing was that the first and last cars were empty. This is under investigation. ------ London (AP) - In a conference this morning, Prime Minister Highbrow announced that the first division was undergoing extensive language training in preparation for a landing on the continent, with elite units learning both Dutch and "whatever language they speak in Belgium". He expressed joy that the English channel had not claimed any more vessels, and stated that he foresaw no reason for any fleets to want to risk the dangers of the channel. ------ Finland (UPI) - Cheering crowds greeted the Russian ambassador today, who arrived on an official visit today. This is his second stop on a Scandinavian tour, whose purpose is evidently to offer aid against the imperialist aims of England. Sweden gladly accepted and several advisors are already instructing the Swedish army. ------ The *real* Crown Prince of Austro-Hungary would like to state that he has no intentions of attacking the Russians in the future and would like to come to a reasonable division of the Balkans. ------ Moscow - Czar Nicholas has sent Generals to Sevastopol and Warsaw to begain raising new armies. This move is attributed to the rising tensions on Russian borders and throughout Europe. ------ Austria to France and Germany - Let's make this a three power alliance, or four power if Italy is interested. ------ France-Germany: Support me into Belgium and you've got a deal. ------ Berlin (CNN) The German government today released a second communique to heads of state around the world. Excerpts from the text follow: --"Units of the Landwehr are now moving into Denmark, in search of rye crispbread, recently discovered to be the perfect complement to a good stein of German beer. It is hoped that the British forces marshaling in the far northern seas will be used to help the British Expeditionary Force during its landing in Norway this fall, and that a spirit of understanding can be gained between the British, Russian, and German forces acting to help the Scandinavian countries prepare for the rough winter. The Kaiser is particularly interested in the intentions of the Russian divisions now mustering in St. Petersburg and Livonia." --"The Kaiser has suggested that the French act to assist the civil defense authorities in Belgium, as it appears that British forces may not arrive in time. The Kaiser also has expressed concern at the French manuevers (sp?) in the wine country; although he recognizes the right of countries to conduct exercises within their home territories, he has stated that such exercises in such an important province can only lead to a heightening of tensions. It is hoped that with the moves into Holland and Spain by the French First and Second armies, that the wine country can return to peace for at least another year, as weather predictions for 1902 suggest that the harvest of '02 should produce an especially rich vintage, which an alcoholic people such as the Germans would prefer to have crushed by bare feet rather than horses' hooves and soldiers' boots." --"The Kaiser has also posted a bounty of DM 10 000 for the head of the so called 'one-liner writer', whose attempts at fouling up communication between Germany and his northern neighbors have been met so far with raucous laughter, as predicted movements failed to materialize. The Kaiser has said, 'This professional spy and diplomacy freak has sought to antagonize the Reich, and if caught he will be beaten with a wet noodle until dead. Such things are not tolerated in a good alcoholic country such as ours.' Sources close to the Kaiser have stated off the record that the identity of the culprit is still a mystery, but that there is suspicion that the culprit is Italian in nationality. It is hoped that His Majesty Iago etc. will soon produce the culprit if this is the case." NOTE : if the excerpts are this long, aren't you glad you don't have to read the whole thing ??? =8-| ------ Moscow - me and Sultan a great team, soon to be a central European power. Sevastopol (AP) - Czar Nicholas and the Sultan of Turkey met today in person for the first time. They were rumored to have discussed further expansions of last month's non-aggression treaty. The Czar was heard to say afterwards that they would soon be a power to be reckoned with even in Central Europe. ------ Roma to Istanbul(Reuters): ``See you in Budapest...'' ------ -- Christopher Davis, BU SMG '90 <ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu> <smghy6c@buacca.bitnet> "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand."
