WSGB Diplomacy #1-2 - COCHRANE Win '03, DILITHIUM Win '00 From: ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu (Christopher K Davis) Date: Sat, 28 Oct 1989 06:15:30 +0000 [Note: I will be packing the COCHRANE and DILITHIUM results together each night from now on, so it'll just be this one big posting. --ckd] WSGB Diplomacy #1 - COCHRANE Winter '03 Results: (Builds) Germany builds F Kie. Italy builds F Nap. Russia builds F StP/nc and A War. Spring '04 moves due Monday 11:59 pm EST [time change, dontcha know]. Press: ------ Turkey: The Turkish high command in discussions with the Russian high command have noted the suggestion of convoying the Bulgarian marines into Italy. We feel that for the spring it is more important to get as many fishing fleets into the area as possible. A convoy may be possible in the fall, but even then it may be more important to go fishing in fertile coastal provinces, then to tie up most of the fleet in a convoy. Russian help will be most welcome in the fall in case Italy objects to having us fish in their canals. ------ England: Excerpt from the Sunday Times (December 2, 1903) - THE CALL FOR HELP FROM THE IBERIAN (or why no ships are being built in York) We have been told by sources high in the government that the reason for the early pullout by the Royal Navy from Scandinavia was caused by an urgent message message received by His Majesty the Prime Minister from Portugal. The sources have told us that conditions in occupied Portugal are growing worse and worse by the day. Evidently, the great shipbuilding industries of Lisbon were threatened by the French to build warships to be used against England and Germany, and the workers went on strike. The strike was suppressed by a wide-scale "purge" of several of the shipbuilders and their families. For this reason, the Royal Navy Command decided that since the Russians were supposed to be trusted, the Scandinavian fleet could sail for Lisbon via York to secure the iron ore needed for the shipbuilding industry of England and to help the oppressed Portugeuse people. However, with the second betrayal of the English by the Russians, the iron ore could not be loaded onto merchant vessels in time. No wonder the Russians forgave us for our taking of "their" Norway last time; they were probably planning to stab us in the back again. Because of the secrecy of the move (as the Russians could not be trusted), the German government did not receive any information about it until now. "It is unfortunate that we could not tell the Germans about this manoever, but with the popularity of the German-Turkish-Russian dictionary, we felt we could not risk alerting the Russians by sending word to Germany," said Admiral MacAllister of Royal Navy Command. "It greatly upsets us that the Germans decided we must have been insane to pull out of Scandinavia early. Obviously, we would not have done so without reason. However, what upsets us more is the veiled Russian threat about how the Anglo-German attack on France would be much easier if it was just a German attack. Oh well, what's to be expected from the Russians anyway." ------ London (Reuters) - The Royal Navy Command today said that the presence of German warships in the North Sea would be welcome considering the latest Russian betrayal. "At least the ships will be friendly ones, and not ready to attack us at any given moment given enough vodka," said His Majesty the Prime Minister. ------ WSGB Diplomacy #2 - DILITHIUM Game start! First moves due 11:59 pm EDT Monday 30 Oct 89. VOTE! Whether you want white (properly attributed) and grey (anonymous) press, or white, grey, and black (improperly attributed, say, written by Russia but ostensibly German in origin). I'm planning to run this as anything goes unless I get a majority of votes *against* black press. No vote will be "anything goes including black press"--so if you don't want black press, vote! If black press goes, I'm just going to mix everything around, and it's your problem to figure out who's who. :-) Votes due along with Spring '01 moves. [PS to you-know-who-you-are: if black press fails the vote, I'll just not send it.] Winter '00 Press: ------ The French government today announced the signing of a peace treaty with England. The English Channel has been declared a neutral zone, and France has promised to assist Britain in obtaining a foothold on the continent in the Low Countries. ------ <Rome, 1900> The newly crowned ruler of Italy, Prince Benito Iago Machiavelli, issued his first decrees to an adoring crowd of diplomats and tourists at the Plaza di Tricori. Excerpts follow: Decree #1: "...and to our gallant ally of France, I wish only for the best of relations. As a token of Italian esteem, we hereby declare the Tyrannean Sea and the Gulf of Lyon a demilitarized zone, which no Italian shall violate on penalty of Our extreme displeasure. We are confidant that the French shall extend us the same courtesy...." Decree #2: "...as for Austria, we expect that the occasionally troublesome Venice-Trieste border problem will be solved as both sides move their armies to more profitable areas of endeavor." ------ Russia: The Czar has been very ill for the past month and is recuperating at his Black Sea estate. Last year's joint naval maneuvers in the Black Sea were a grea success. Plans for joint maneuvers this year have been canceled due to the Czar's illness. The recently expanded Russian fleet is reported to be leaving soon on a shakedown cruise for Rumania. The Turkish fleet will, no doubt, be moving >from Ankara to Constantinople due to rising tensions in the West. ------ The German Government sends greetings to all and offers large quantities of beer to all, no strings attached. Of course, friendship pacts with the peace-loving peoples of France, Austria, Britain, and Russia would be a nice thing to discuss over a stein or two, and the Italians and Turks are wilcommen in the beer-halls as well. Particularly thorny problems that it is hoped can be discussed by the drunken ambassadors include the formation of Scandinavian protectorates, the creation of a DMZ in Tyrolia, and the ever- vexing Burgundian question.... ------ Istanbul to Vienna (UPI): ``Hey, it's a gunboat game. Want to try an Austro-Turkish alliance just for the hell of it?'' ------ The Fatherland shall triumph again... ------ -- Christopher Davis, BU SMG '90 <ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu> <smghy6c@buacca.bitnet> "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand."
