VERSAILLES--The Sun King grows despondant over the lack of communication.
Hundreds of telephone operators and phone-company executives across the
country were executed when palace phone lines were found to be inoperable.
Old-fashioned telegrams sent to leaders of the Great Powers have yet to
elicit any response.  According to palace sources, the King has spent the
last few days wandering up-and-down the Hall of Mirrors mumbling "Is anybody
out there?"  Palace doctors expect that receiving replys to His Majesty's
Halloween Costume Party invitations will lead to a swift recovery.

In other news, classified sources claim that the armed forces of the French
Empire have been sent foraging for party supplies.  The Royal Guard is
rumored to be confiscating vast wine cellars across the countryside; while
the rest of His Majesty's Armed Forces head to Iberia in search of pinatas
and colourful party streamers and decorations.

Roma: In the recent election the Nationalist party has ousted the
Constitutional Monarchists by a landslide. Prime Minister "Il Duce"
promises "the trains will now run on time in Italia".

The Problems of Italy
  by Steve Brooks

During 1901, Italy is oftimes forced to play a waiting game.  Both her
neighbors (France & Austria) will ask for and promise nonaggression.  Only
Austria might offer a definite alliance based on the "Super Power" theory.
This, of course, would involve Italy in an attack on France before the
alliance in the west were firmed up.  Russia on the other hand will try
to be on very good terms with Italy Since Russia must fight either
Austria or Turkey.  But Italy must be careful, a western super alliance
of England, France, and Germany can cause problems. Germany and England
move in on Russian and French fleets swing into the Mediterranean,
aided by armies through Piedmont and Tyrolia.

Let us examine the openings available to Italy and what they man:

In the above case, if France has A Spa and A Bur and Italy thinks that
France will order A Spa-Mar and A Bur-Mar, then Italy an order A
Pied/S/ Fre A Spa-Mar.  Italy loses Mar and causes France to lose Spa.

However, this is still somewhat unsatisfactory.  As Italy, try this

Now watch the mail come flying in.  England and Germany both may see
the chance to pick up and ally vs France, while France will be writing
to find out what the hell is going on.  Austria, Russia, and Turkey will
all be concerned that you are moving away from the scene of main
action.  They will want to know your reasons and may come up with some
very interesting offers.  Then in the Fall 1901 you move: A Ven-Tri, A
Pied-Tyo, F Ion-Tun  Build F Nap & A Ven.

During the period between Spring 1901 and Fall 1901, you have sent all
letters from Germany and England to your (secret) ally France.  In Spring
1902, you can launch a two prong attack on Austria aided by either
Russia or Turkey (or rarely both) depending on which made the best
offer.  Use this if you have a strong ally in France and have him write
to Austria, Russia, and Turkey asking them if they know why you are
turning West. Try it, you'll like it.

Remember that the more that you guys type in, the more articles that I can
print!
