I think I have to start processing these things with a can of Jolt around. Mea culpa. [No, England, I am not out to get you; looks like I just hit C-w at the wrong time without noticing. Argh. -ckd] ------ LOTS OF PEOPLE GOING BACK, BACK, BACK! BOSTON (GM) - Look at all those retreats! ------ Turkish fall press Sultan spurns cold weather climates. In an interview today the Sultan responded to a question about Russian expassion "Who cares what the Russians do up north. Its too cold up there for me. I don't know why anyone would want to live north of, say Serbia. I suppose the Russians could feel the same way about living in the south. Its probably too warm for there taste here." New recruits turn out to be inept sailors. After losing several ships to collisions during the latest Black Sea training mission it has been decided that future training missions will be held in coastal waters where it is felt that it will be easier to avoid accidents in the future. It is reported that the Russians have also decided to stop Black Sea maneuvers as well, presumably this is so that they can use their fleet as a garrison in Rumania once the army stationed there moves inland. What else would they want to do with it? ------ France: MADRID (UPI): Based on intelligence indicating a German base in Tunis, French forces moved in to halt the threat. The local commander expressed his desire to end this incident quickly, so as to join the fighting in the north. ------ Germany: The press office of the German General Staff admitted to considerable confusion regarding the current Soviet stance on Scandinavia. Conflicting reports over the precise status of Russian forces in Scandinavia are everywhere. Is Russia at war with England? Or was it the act of maddened rioters? Or did England cede Norway to Russia officially? Did the General Secretary request that German troops be stationed in Sweden or not? The Kaiser, in a hastily-mustered press conference, announced that "Germany bears no ill will towards the Soviet Union. We hope to form a long-standing and mutually beneficial alliance. However, we would appreciate knowing just what the hell is going on." The General Staff reports receiving both a request to occupy and a request to stay out of Sweden from the highest circles of the Soviet Union. Rumors of a power-struggle in the secretive Soviet Union are everywhere. The General Secretary was unavailable for comment. German regular army troops stationed in Copenhagen are reportedly being sent to Sweden. "This is in response to a formal request from the Soviet Union," said the Kaiser. "However, there is the possibility that we have misinterpreted the wishes of the General Secretary; in this case the German troops will simply turn back and remain in Zeeland. No harm can possibly be done by this action and we sincerely apologize to the leaders of the Soviet Union if this is not, after all, what they meant when they requested the German occupation of Sweden." The Kaiser strongly requested a clarification of Soviet intentions toward the Scandinavian area as soon as possible, in order to avert a possible international incident. In other news today, the Kaiser, enraged at the Pope's speech at Easter Mass, where he casually referred to the German Empire as "a bunch of low-down, stinking krauts," ordered German troops to cross the border into Italy today, where they have occupied the city of Milan and are reportedly marching on the capital. ------ Dover (Reuters) - The English Government today bought a new underwater telegraph cable from Germany today to replace the Bostonian one bought earlier which was sabotaged by the French. His Majesty the Prime Minister was quoted as saying, "We really don't understand why this cable keeps ceasing to send information out of England while we can receive information >from it. Either an earthquake must have damaged it while it was being built, or the French somehow rigged it to do this every summer." This year's communication problem may have damaged the English position in Norway as it seems that the Russians knowingly violated the Anglo-Prussian alliance in Scandinavia. Minister of War Brooks said in a press conference today, "We hope that the Germans will not allow this breaking of the treaty to be allowed. We cannot help the Germans against France unless we have assurances that the British Isles will not be attacked, and we will not have these assurances without some holding in Scandinavia, and an ability to communicate with the continent." ------ PRAVDA(Moskva) The General Secratary of the Communist party today hailed the continuing cooperation with the Turkish and German Empires. "The element of trust demonstrated by all three governments allows the concentration of effort on bringing englightened rule to the rest of Europe." The Ministry of Peace applauded the Turkish decision to enhance its naval power. "Soviet sailors operate much better in colder waters," said a spokesman. "We are glad of the opportunity to complement the Turkish Navy in the Mediterranean with ground forces. We are further confident that this specialization will dispel any doubts about the cooperative skill of our armed forces." ------ -- Christopher Davis, BU SMG '90 <ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu> <smghy6c@buacca.bitnet> "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand."
