WSGB Diplomacy - COCHRANE Summer '02, plus earthquake. From: ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu (Christopher K Davis) Date: Wed, 18 Oct 1989 05:53:21 +0000 WSGB Diplomacy #1 - COCHRANE Summer '02 Results: Russian A Vie retreats to Boh Press: DELAYS DUE TO EARTHQUAKE BOSTON (GM) - Game results were delayed approximately two hours due to the San Francisco earthquake. The GM's father is in San Francisco on a business trip, but *has* been in contact with the GM's family, and is all right (though stuck at San Francisco until SFO reopens or he can get out of there & home). Whew. [No smilies, and no "real" GM press--I'm still shaking. The game goes on. -ckd] ------ Germany: Confused by his British and Soviet allies' actions in the north, a somewhat dazed Kaiser agreed to the General Secretary's proposed partition of Scandinavia. Following the chaos which erupted in Scandinavia in the spring, the General Secretary invited Germany to send regular troops to pacify Sweden. The Kaiser appears to have agreed to this, as well as having agreed to vacate the Austrian Tirol, presently occupied by German forces. The British evacuated Norway during the riots for reasons unknown, and have been replaced by Soviet maritime forces. On the Western Front, the Germans are preparing for a major offensive drive into France proper. The Kaiser has reportedly requested British assistance in the Ruhr offensive, and has urged His Majesty the Prime Minister to land marines in Brittany to cut off French supplies. ------ Turkey: Refuges attempt to flee Serbia in anticipation of a Turkish attack in the fall. They returned after running into a Russian infantry divison probing Budapests defenses. It has been reported that the 2nd army has stopped sending olives home and may be on the move this fall. It would be expected that the 1st army which is stationed nearby in Albania will support this move. It is also suspected that the Sultan has asked for Russian support in this attack, however nothing has been made public yet. ------ Well, FINE! BE that way! -France ------ The Soviet Presidium met today in an emergency session to discuss the German attack on Sweden. After a long closed-door meeting, the General Secretary made the following statement: "The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the German Empire have had a long and peaceful relationship. We have every desire to maintain that spirit of cooperation but we are concerned about the recent German action. The unprovoked attack will be ignored, but any subsequent unannounced move into Sweden will be treated as a declaration of war against the USSR. As proof of our continued goodwill, the province of Vienna will be turned over to Germany as soon as the decadent empire of Austria-Hungary is destroyed." In a related note, the Soviet War Office competed an analysis of British military strength. The unreleased report is said to conclude that British naval forces are comparatively weak and could be routed by a combined German/Soviet fleet, should the battle ever be necessary. This conclusion is purely hypothetical, since the German and British empires are currently allied against France, and the German/Soviet alliance is considered to be extremely valuable. The Balkan military command today publically assured the Turkish/Italian forces that a concerted strike against the teetering armies of the Austro-Hungarian empire would conquer at least 2 provinces and perhaps 3. Informed sources also suggest that the Black Sea maneuvers be discontinued if both parties agree. ------ Italy: The Pope today expressed great concern over the reported movements of a french battle group in the Western Mediterranean. Official reports >from Paris still insist that this is nothing more than tourists enjoying the fine Southern weather, despite first-hand reports that the vessels bear arms. "If they have arms, I'm sure it is merely to protect against any flying sharks.", claimed one high-ranking officer. Meanwhile, progress is reported in the expulsion of unruly Austrians from Venice. If they receive the hoped-for assistance from Turkey in settling them in Trieste, the job should be completed by the end of this year. Today in Rome, the Pope greeted the arrival of the English ambassador. It is rumored that they will have much to talk about in the next few weeks. ------ A military think tank today released the long-awaited NTP (No Tea Please) report. Considered to be a laughing-stock in powerful circles, the head of the think tank, Herr Ivan de LaGuerre von Krieg, summarized the conclusions: "If ze shtupiten French and Deutsch armis stoppen ze fighten und turn to smash the Britishers, und la belle Armee de URSS va aidez the alliance, les running-dog imperialist oppressor Anglais would not last 3 turns." ------ -- Christopher Davis, BU SMG '90 <ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu> <smghy6c@buacca.bitnet> "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand."
