Russian retreat/disband and press due 11:59 EDT Tuesday. PRESS: WAR IN THE NORTH--OR JUST A POWER VACUUM? MANEUVERS CONTINUE IN BLACK SEA. PAS DE DEUX IN AUSTRIA-HUNGARY. ENGLAND IN CHANNEL. FILM AT...NO, NEVER MIND. BOSTON (GM) - Russian fleets moved westward today, following the British as they left Norway. Rumors that they just came to pick up after the Limeys have not been confirmed. Farther south, joint "friendship maneuvers" continue in the Black Sea, with another 3 ships reported lost "due to foul weather." In Austria-Hungary, the Russians and Austro-Hungarians continue to fight over the famed Viennese Elvis Sighting Controversy, while England took control of the English Channel. The French were said to be "concerned." ------ Russia: General Zhukov, recently placed in command of the Rumanian division, explained his unit's thrust at Budapest. "The element of surprise is essential to a successful combat operation," he said. "The pressure on Budapest removed any possible support from Serbia." The Soviet Ministry of Sports and Leisure commented today on the actions of the overenthusiastic sailing fans in St. Petersburg. "The Arctic Windsurfing Club clearly behaved in an irresponsible manner and will be sharply admonished," said a spokesman. "Just because the wind is right, does not mean that the peaceful citizens of Norway should be disturbed by an 'invasion' of vodka-crazed sailors." "As a result of the participation of the Soviet Swedish fleet in this mayhem, they will be pulled out from base in the fall. The situation needs strong discipline which we have been unable to provide." The Ministry has sent a note to the German government requesting its assistance in administering Sweden in September. The General Secretary of the Communist Party noted today the natural affinity of the Greek and Turkish people. "Perhaps the experienced Turkish governors would be more adept at managing Greece. The Italians could always introduce the Viennese to the fine Italian cuisine at Christmas or next year." ------ Germany: The Kaiser today questioned the commissioning of a Soviet fleet in the northern port of Arkangelsk, claiming it violated previous Anglo-Deutsch-Soviet naval limitations treaties. "While I hope that relations between Russia and Germany are not harmed by the current tensions in Scandinavia, I suspect the British may be somewhat concerned by this build-up." Stung by the Pope's characterization of ethnic Germans as "dirty scum," the Kaiser has mobilized troops on the Italian border. While this violates the demilitarization pact with Austria of 1901, analysts predict that the Austrian Emperor will be understanding. German diplomats also attempted to mediate peace talks between Turkey and Austria, suggesting that the two nations come to a peaceful understanding. All's quiet on the Western front as German reinforcements moved up from the heartland. The German General Staff is believed to be awaiting the arrival of the British Expeditionary Force before pressing on. Sources indicate that a major German offensive is expected in the Fall from the Ruhr region. --- Turkey: Turkish units surround Serbia. The 1st and 2nd armies have surrounded Serbia, but are waiting for the Serbians to be softened up by artillary barrages. An invasion is expected imminently. The 2nd and 3rd fleets are undergoing a shakedown cruise off the coast of Bulgaria. The 1st fleet is continuing maneuvers with the Russians, since all of the experienced crew have been sent to the 2nd and 3rd fleets. It is expected that the 1st fleet will be used exclusively for training purposes for the foreseeable future. ------ London (Reuters) - The British Expeditionary Force today solidified the English alliance with Belgium by putting down a pro-France coup attempt this week. His Majesty the Prime Minister in a press conference today said, "Our alliance with Belgium is very important to the security of the Trans-Channel telegraph cable. We will not tolerate any more French interference with the English-German alliance." ------ Brussels (United Press) - King Leopold was overjoyed with the suppression of the pro-French rebellion today. He was quoted as saying, "A plague of Frogs is always bad. We will now help the English and the Germans with any retalitory action against France. We need French grapes for our fine wines anyway." ------ The goverments-in-exile of Portugal and Spain today requested British aid in freeing their country from the tyrannical French occupation. "They talk funny, they dress funny, and they eat really weird food" was part of an unofficial statement made by Presidente-in-Exile Carlos Manana at a cocktail party. "Why don't they just pack their croissants and go home?" he asked rhethorically. ------ -- Christopher Davis, BU SMG '90 <ckd@bu-pub.bu.edu> <smghy6c@buacca.bitnet> "Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand."
