Alternate Realities From: jefyoung@pawl.rpi.edu (Jeffrey Young) Date: Wed, 07 Feb 1990 20:57:33 +0000 *DESCRIPTION* (And long overdue! FYI, Genericon VI's LARP (which I co-GM'ed and wrote a lot of flew..) (Hmm.. some stuff that got left out at the dinner table, besides the uneaten food..) **Move from Morgan (#21)** Amidst enjoying a meal of turkey, peas and carrots washed down with a big mug of Ginger Ale, (odd drink, that..) the Federal Agent gets this distracted look in his eyes. Nobody really notices as , in the middle of taking a slow bite of a sweet roll, shifts to his Xanadu form-- a four-foot Mongoose. Suddenly, his head snaps up, and he bursts out with, "Cowards? Why that pompous windbag! We go there to help them out, and when we don't brag about it he calls us cowards? Self-important son-of-a...." Casha, sitting closest to the Mongoose, acts first and elbows him. Hard. Morgan blinks, looks about, and sheepishly shifts back to Human. "Ow! ..Wha? Ph, sorry. I must really be getting tired, daydreamin like that. Thanks, Casha." "Janus? Drambuie on the rocks. And make it a double." As the burly barkeep hastens into the kitchen to comply, Morgan turns to Luagha. "My apologies, Prince Luagha. I really thought that our help was being accepted as a matter of course, and I really don't take to being insulted like that." He awaits Luagha's reply, and then gets ready to excuse himself. **Move From Serroli (#27)** The well dressed Dwarven noble (when did he change?) sits back, taking a pull from the large tankard of strong ale before addressing all the obvious mages. "About magic," he begins, "..my views are that magic is an energy in the world, always there. There is a center to that energy, on a world and each world is a distance from the center of magic in the universe. Magic must be harnessed to be effective. Everyone can do this to some extent. This is personal magic, and is so small to be unnoticeable. This is how knowing something is going to happen (deja vu) is explained. Then there are elemental forces, and things associated with such. Healing is Eatrth or Light, Water being deceit, trickery, and such. Next comes the greater arts of magic, the manipulating of magic directly. It is not necessarily better than anything else, but it requires the right frame of mind to use it effectively. The manipulating of unseen forces is not a feat everyone can accomplish, and therefore mages are rare. There are many types of mages. Those that operate with words and gestuires are common where I come from. There are also those who give magic to items using runes. Also, I welcome any intelligent conversation about magic, or making of magic items. For myself, I am also a smith, and will try one day to imbue the items I create with magical energies." "Uh oh.. him and Vandermast could spar for hours..", somene mumbles. **Move from Tarrin Sandwhitt(#4)** "I must say, that that's a pretty interesting description of Magic." The Kender finishes his Spiked Apple Juice before getting up and approaching the Dwarf. "But where does my magic fit in?" The look on peoples faces is amused. 'Magic? Him?', is the unspoken thought. "It's music magic, as the Bard who taught it to me said. Quivalen Sath was his name, maybe you have heard of him? No? Oh well..." The Kender pulls out the recorder again. "Watch this..." Putting the recorder to his lips, Tarrin plays a soft, soothing, complex melody that reminds some of a deep forest glade, with the occasional high-pitched note sounding various tropical birds. Or perhaps it is just your imagination. The song has a calming effect on all, and others besides Morgan find their eyes closing. The Federal Agent excuses himself from the table, and heads upstairs. "That's magic for you-- but as you say, one needs to have the right frame of mind to do magic. I probably don't fit that category, now, do I?" And to prove it, Tarrin steps over to where the rope to the Magicians Guild hangs. He sticks out his hand, and grasps it firmly. "The Guardians consider me a Magician..",he says. He plays a fanfare on the recorder-- --and suddenly the building is shaking. "HEY! I didn't do that..." , Tarrin protests. People stumble to their feet, and the silverware rattles. "But you CAN'T have an earthquake in Limbo.." , Taldin says.."FARGO!" The red-haired Guardian appears, and looks bewildered as well. "Not my doing, 'corn.." Kelso spreads his wings for balance, and just as suddenly the floor stops shaking. What appears to be a Portal opens up, though none of the Guardians had made a move. This one is red, and one can see what is on the other side. Six heavily armed guards throw a hooded figure through the Portal, and it sizzles and snaps shut behind him. The figure has a midnight blue cape, a lighter blue pair of trousers, and a white shirt split down the front. Hanging at his belt is a rapier or foil, and he throws back his head (and hood) to reveal strange-looking grey-green eyes, and jet black hair with a thin, foot-long pony-tail. "Mister Srien Silversinger, welcome.", Taldin says, with a knowing smile. The man has a look of suprise on his face, which is quickly blanked. It changes to intense interest, and the Rogue says, in a clipped Englisjh accent, "My, they said things would be different on the other side...but gods! I had no idea.." His gaze comes to rest on Luagha and freezes. "Such things exist here? This is incredible!" "Aye, Silversinger,", continues Taldin, the Guardian in blue, "You are meant to be here, for whatever reason. You shall find out soon enough." Taldin addresses the entire group (minus Morgan) once more. "And now, for your enjoyment, the Maze of Dread is finished and will be available as a Proving Grounds Adventure starting on Monday. Some of you may rememeber the Treasure Room Portal at the beginning of the game, and this is another shot at the place. But this time, you have to win your way through the Maze to get to it. Your opponents, for this run, will be each other." "You may team up in teams of two each, with the restriction that only First Level Characters may team up. If you lucky Second Levelers (Morgan,Viento,Swifteagle,Luagha, and Tarrin) wish to make a play, you must go it alone." "Oh, and there might be a trap or two, and a monster or three down there." "Form up your teams, get a good night's rest, and in the morning I'll open the Portal." "Great.", Janus says, as all get up to go. "I don't suppose someone wants to help with the dishes.." **TECH NOTE** This proving grounds portal is open to ALL players, and if there are any teams you wish to form, let me know. Of course, as a PG portal, one cannot re-enter the Portal if you leave it either by 'death' or exiting. So make your preparations now, folks.. Don't have a teammate? Let me know-- odds on there are other people who need a buddy (or a buddette) as well. You may also have me relay you the address of your new partner if you don't have it. -Taldin -- "You are blue, Unicorn.. the Blue of clear, cloudless days where everything seems like it's going right and nothing could go wrong.. and the Blue of despair and lonliness." jefyoung@pawl.rpi.edu Referenced By Up
