Diplomacy Zine --- Chapter Three EP #146 From: mad-2@kub.nl (C. Wekx) Date: Mon, 26 Feb 1990 12:03:59 +0000 ------------- Chapter Three ------------- This chapter contains results from TANNENBURG (#18), ENTENTE (#21), DAWN PATROL (#23), BERLIN (#32), EL ALAMEIN (#41), SNIKKEL 1 (#42), SNIKKEL 2 (#43) and blind game MULHOUSE (#22). |*.*****.*****.*****.*****.*****.*****.****E ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... | Winter '07 of the game TANNENBURG (BNC number 1989HZ) (GM is ebrosius@lucy.wellesley.edu/Eric Brosius) Date: Sun, 25 Feb 90 22:35:59 est TANNENBURG (1989HZ) Game Ends As Europe Is Introduced To Perestroika! I received no vetoes of the concession to Russia, so the game is over and Russia is the winner. Congratulations to Matthew Jordan on a fine victory! And thanks to the rest of you for playing. If you were an original player, thanks for sticking it out to the end (or your end). And thanks to my two standbys as well. Here is a chart of the supply center holdings by year. I'll be forwarding a copy to the Boardman Number Custodian, Don Williams, who keeps records of all games played: 1989HZ ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL (Eric Brosius) RUSSIAN WIN Winter 1907 (01) (02) (03) (04) (05) (06) (07) A) 5 6 4 2 1 0 -- E) 4 4 4 1 1 0 -- F) 6 6 6 7 8 7 6 G) 5 5 6 7 6 5 4 I) 4 3 3 3 2 3 1 R) 6 6 6 8 9 11 14 T) 4 4 5 6 7 8 9 [A] Bill Ledoux, Sr. (ELM F'06). [R] Matthew Jordan (WIN W'07). [T] David Shook (SUR W'07). I will publish one more report containing endgame statements. In an endgame statement one traditionally describes the game as one saw it. Often no one sees the whole picture since you're each busy concealing things from each other. So if you want to explain how how pulled off that big scam (or how that other scoundrel pulled it off on you), this is the place. I'll write an account of how the game looked from this end to go along with it. Of course you're not required to write an endgame statement, but if you do please get it to me by Sunday, March 4. All the players who finished the game are eligible. I'll also take one from Michael Farebrother, who resigned honorably when he lost his e-mail access, but has since regained it. If you want to play in another game and you think you will have the time to stick with it until it's finished, just contact Eric Klien and ask to be placed in a second game. His address is eric_s_klien@cup.portal.com (or whatever other address you've been using for him). One more note: Each year Diplomacy players belonging to the North American hobby vote in the Runestone Poll, which rates zines, subzines, and GMs. Our publisher Eric Klien will probably be printing a ballot. Please vote for Electronic Protocol as a zine and for me as a GM. I should warn you that there's one minor complication -- I am the person who runs the Poll. Please don't let that affect your vote -- I promise not to hold any grudges. But I need 5 votes to make the main list, so I'd be delighted if you'd each give me the vote you think I deserve (and the same for "EP"). If you can only vote for one zine and one GM, that's okay -- the Poll is weighted to account for these things, and I really want votes from everyone. I will also send you a ballot by normal mail if you want -- just send me your address and ask for a ballot. Once again, thanks for letting me GM your game. I had a great time. Press: Amsterdam: Sweet's phone number: +31 13 441541. Belgrade: Minister Stojanov has expressed his warm affection to the Turkish military advisors who "did a great job" during the Hungarian/Serbian war at the end of 1901. Three of them were decorated "Hero of military honor". Berlin: The Kaiser was quite upset that the Norweigans intercepted a lasagne shipment from Rome to Berlin. He demanded retribution. He demanded that the English relinquish control of Norway to Germany. He has also asked the Czar of Russia to assist in this takeover. Neither has bothered to reply. Berlin: The Lasagna index of the Berlin Stock Market has risen through the ceiling this last week. Experts were puzzled as to the exact cause of this behaviour, but apparently certain French brokerage firms have been behind the trend. Bucarest: 'Rumanians do it better' (Note: that is a secret code to warn Anand that I have agreed his plan) Budapest: We have for the moment to face the rebellion of a part of the Army against our new sovereign the Duke of Warsaw. But the Navy has obeyed to the orders by beginning the attack of the Turkish boats. The Duke of Warsaw offers 10000000000000 marks for the head of that bloody bastard Francois-Joseph. Brussels: The President has asked The Pope to aid in the liberation of Belgium from the English. "The English don't eat lasagne...they eat Fish and Chips. Who wants Fish and Chips??" Constantinople: The Turkish Emir stated on a press meeting yesterday, that he intends to occupy all the properties which were lost during the last few decades of imperialist war. On a question how to achieve this, he told the audience that he would cooperate with the Czar for the time being. "My first aim is to bring back Greece, Serbia, Dalmatia and Budapest under Turkish protection." "Later on, we will worry about those damned Ruskies", he said. Copenhagen: There has been an increase in immigration from Greenland since the Fall of 1901. It seems that Vikings have been landing on the shores preaching about the Return of Odin. Local officials are more concerned about the German forces that have landed here. "Let the English handle the Vikings, we must overthrow the Germans". Dublin: >From our Western front: Twenty four supporters were wounded due to riots at the local football match last night. Hades: In a rare press statement, Satan was appalled by the goings-on in Europe! "Imagine! Fighting over lasagne!! After all those years I've spent corrupting those people, they can only fight over lasagne. I am ashamed. But the Turks, ahh, I like them, stealing little girls off the streets and subjecting them to bizarre rituals! As a reward, lets help the Turks take over Greece." London: England - France: Based on the diplomacy I've received, I have to assume that you are attacking me. Thus, you should view my attempted move to the *English* Channel as purely defensive in nature. Look, I could have supported it (or Munich into Burgandy) so obviously I'm not all that interested in a war. London: The new top secret project in the shipyards here is the lynch-pin in the new Anglo-Turk alliance, according to governmental sources here. The very best engineers and ship-wrights have been employed in this project, reportedly to be the very latest in nautical design. Unidentified sources in the Emir's court have intimated that this new fleet is instrumental in the Emir's plot against Russia, but since Turkey is ostensibly allied with Russia, this information is to be taken with a grain of salt. London: A spokesman of King George V denied rumours and speculations about a Anglo-Turkish pact. "It's too early to speak about a pact, but we are making progress with our peace talks, indeed." Asked about the Anglo-Russo cooperation, he said that it was born out of necessity, since Germany and France were allied at that time. Moscow: The Minister of Defense, Boris Snitchovitch, declared that the Fleet built in St. Petersburg was a waste of Russian resources, and that he grieves with all Russian people who feel that Russia's destiny to rule the world may have been jeopardised. He asked the English people for forgiveness because of this obvious blunder. Moments later, he requested that the Duke of Warsaw attempt to invade Austria again. "The Austrians have broken treaties with us. They deserve to die." Moscow: Czar Nicholas has become ill. Royal spokesmen whisper that he's recovering from a veneral disease he caught last winter in Paris. Naples: The pope, in visit to naples today, has blessed the holy fleet that will rout towards Constantinople in a cruisade against the Muslems. "We, as civilised people, can not tolerate the presence of those arabs in Europe and will raid up to jerusalem, crushing any opposition" New Delhi: Reports out of South Africa indicate that the popularity of Mohandas K. Gandhi is rising. Mr. Gandhi is attempting to end discrimination in South Africa. People in Europe are calling on Mr. Gandhi to intervene with the English government to try and convince the English to leave Belgium. Nowhere: Nothing. Orion Sector: "ET WANT LASAGNE ... PHONE POPE" Oslo: There have been many reports of Vikings leaving the shores of Norway since the English landed there. There have also been strange stories about the return of the Old Gods, Odin, Freya and Thor. Worship of these Gods has increased at the same time as the Vikings. Ouagadougou: HaHaHaHaHa: Dear Emir, in the Stab-Stab game, you and Austria are at odds now. I would never have done such a think. Hallouf!!!!! I promise to repair those mistakes when I will be back in Vienna. Paris: Minister Gearoid declared Italy to be an outlaw state and demanded that all nations aid in the destruction of those mafiosi. Roma: Minister Mario Leali called on all European political leaders to take military action against the infidels of Turkey: "Turkey is a major threat to the civilized world. (...) The Italian government has directed some units towards the Eastern part of the Mediterranean, so that they won't expand any further." Well informed MPs have been told that Leali and Archduke Francois of Austria have signed a pact of mutual assistance at the end of their meeting in Vienna last month. A secret protocol concerning Turkey is said to be included in that pact. Rome: The Pope, a lover of lasagne, has ordered that all ships bound for Turkey and France, use lasagne noodles as their ammunition. "That will show those Infidels in Turkey. Lasagne is not only a good food but also great ammunition. Lasagne is a utilitarian product." Saluzzo: The investigation into the cause of the town hall explosion has been discontinued, according to Dr. Hestings, an assistant to the police superintendant. "We had some quite interesting leads, but orders came from Rome to halt all investigations," Dr. Hestings said. Local observers were skeptical, as Vicent Poirot, the super, has never failed in an investigation. Smyrna: The Turkish Tugboat (locally known as the Turkish 2nd Fleet), was outfitted with special "anti-lasagne" armour, designed to withstand the most powerful lasagne. Admiral Khotani said of the new armour, "It will withstand the worst garlic and spices that the Italians could throw at it. Have you ever seen an uncooked lasagne noodle? It could pass through the hardest plate steel with ease". The anti-lasagne armour consists of high-heat generating steamer that rests below the water level. Its job is to attempt to steam the lasagne noodles into a softer pasta before it hits the ship. Only time will tell if this invention will work. St. Petersburg: The Tsar was appalled by the building of a navy along the Northern Coast of St. Petersburg during the Winter season. "What FOOL ordered that navy? What use is it to us? An army! That would have been useful". Two days later, the head of the Ministry of Armament and Procreation, Ivan Terribilisky was found resting on the City Gates. Tilburg: (Leuter) It seems that the Turkish emir has himself been the victim of a kidnapping in his family. It is been said that his sister Gabriele was kidnapped by the Swiss guards and is serving as a concubine of the pope at the moment. Tilburg: (Leuter) In Tilburg a very exclusive lasagne restaurant was opened as a reaction to the increased interest in this delicacy by the rulers of the other seven European powers. Our correspondent reports that the quality of the meat was very poor; he said it tasted like an Austrian marine. Tilburg: (Leuter) All soldiers serving the seven major European powers woke up a couple of days late due to exhaustion. They are said as having been completely worn out after having practiced their "abilities" in the Irish way. Tilburg (Leuter) President Oistin of the United Republic of Cork and France has declared complete war on the big enforcer for not granting him more time to discuss his plans with allies/enemies. Tokyo: Headline -- GODZILLA RIPS UP YOKOHAMA AGAIN! The City of Yokohama was destroyed for the third time in the past two weeks by Godzilla. The City Officials are frantically looking for a virgin to sacrifice to Godzilla. Unfortunately, their searching has proved fruitless. Agents of the Italian government located in Yokohama have sent a request to their government to supply a few. "We have lots of virgins in Italy. Who would want to touch our girls?". Vienna: The new leader of the Austrian/Hungarian empire has sent diplomats to St. Petersburg and Constantinople to arrange a triple meeting about the on going war at the Balkans. "Wien am Abend" expects he will make some territorial concessions to both Russia (Serbia) and Turkey (Greece). Obviously the Duke wants to end the hostilities in a peaceful way and is willing to pay for it. Zurich: After condemning the Emir of Turkey last year for his abduction of a Dutch girl, the Tsar did an about face. He sent one of his Princesses, Jenny, to co-habitate with the Turkish Emir. The Tsar called it a 'payment' to keep a Turkish-Russian alliance alive. The Tsar asked for help into Serbia from the Emir in the Spring or Fall. Jenny is the youngest of the Tsar's daughters, she has dark hair and blue eyes. This reported can only assume that the Emir of Turkey will be looking for a redhead next, to complete his harem.
