Dogs that bark don't bite. But France will bite! A great piece of the former English Empire will soon be ours. There may be a possibility for piece, if those Britain stops the conquering in Africa. Stay out of Faschoda! Le Matin: There are some rumours, that Germany plans to aid England. These are absolutely false, because Germany will soon cease to be a threat to any nation, should it really send his troops against France, instead of defending its territory. Our great Emperor Francois Pomme de Terre has garantied Germany any help to get rid of the Italian invaders, which is not needed for the fight against England. To show this the armys in Spain and the Picardy are sent to the eastern border for assistance. Help is coming Wilhelm! (late press release due to reporters striking for more interesting topics to cover) Rome - Italian troops have marched into Munich as part of Operation Alpine, a covert military action planned by Minister of Defense Alfa Romeo. "This operation was a contingency plan in case German armies moved into friendly Russian territory," says Romeo. Apparently, the King decided to go ahead with Alpine after many hours of discussion with his advisors, late into the night after receiving word of German troop movements. King Jean-Paul had no comment the next day, but appeared exhausted and weary as he made his way up to his mountain retreat for a week's vacation. retreats are due asap. Date: Tue, 6 Mar 90 11:12 N Ok folks, summer '02 moves. Could the two players who are going on holiday tell me whether or not they can find someone to replace them for just one season, please ? Date: Wed, 7 Mar 90 10:32 MET I have no problem playing italy for you as long as I'm only a temporary replacement. I am playing in my own game (which is currently on hold looking for an italian replacement oddly enough) so I don't want to play more than about a year. (diplomacy time) Any longer would make sorting the two games out rather difficult. Eric Mullins GM: I have asked the only other person I know whom I can trust to play my country, and I am awaiting his reply. I asked him to reply directly to you as well if he decides to play. This person is: Eric Mullins emullins@ariel.unm.edu phone 505/888-4182 (home only) He currently is playing Austria in the Dreadnaught game of Chapter Four. I suspect he will be willing to play, but I would still much rather keep full control of Italy myself if no one has any problems with the delay. If people are in such a rush, however, then I guess I'll need to hand over control to Eric. Do you know yet which seasons my replacement would need to play? Jean-Paul Davis King of Italy GM: Eric Mullins has agreed to replace me for Spring 1903 - Fall 1903 turns (although I would still rather delay the game). I will completely brief him on the game's position and history, as well as my own disposition and plans in the game. Will you give his address to all the other players? Or should I distribute it? I don't mind doing it if you don't want to. In case you don't have it from the last message I sent, it is: Eric Mullins phone 505/888-4182 (home only) emullins@ariel.unm.edu (Note this is in Albuquerque, NM, which is in Mountain Time Zone. I don't have his street address.) Jean-Paul Davis King of Italy So I would have my replacement turn my orders for me on March 19th and on March 26th (although he will be able to confer with me on the 26th before actually sending them in). This means he would play Spring '03 and Fall '03 for me. Of course, all this depends on his reply, which I am still waiting for. I'll let you know what's up ASAP. Has France found a replacement? Jean-Paul Davis King of Italy Date: Wed, 7 Mar 90 10:40 MET Yo folks, Both players have found a replacement player.... Get those bloody moves in you bastards ! Joris Date: Tue, 6 Mar 90 20:48 MET Yo folks, Ok France's moves seem to be underway, but Italy is on holiday. I have received some proposals to change the game speed. Proposal 1: Spring/Fall moves every 14 days monday 7.00 pm MET sharp Summer/winter moves on the thursdat following the moves same time Proposal 2: As 1:, but if there are no Summer/winter moves to play the deadline for the next real movement season will be the next monday. Please vote for both the proposals separately. Send me a mailmsg asap with your thoughts about them. Take care of a replacement player in case of holiday etc. So send me smth like: 1. yes yep ok or no fuck off or smth like that 2. idem No Vote Received=I don't care.. If neither proposal gains majority vote we stick to the old speed. If both do the proposal with the most votes is chosen; if there is a tie I decide for myself. (Constantinople) The Sultan's erratic sexual behaviour has continued over the winter. He has been seen in the presence of both male and female prostitutes, all being very young. This has caused a great deal of concern with the Council of Emirates, as they are unsure of any policies involving the War in Europe. (Heaven) St. Peter has made a request of the Pope that he bring the true meaning of Christianity back to the world. "A Holy War, that's what it will take." Richard the Lion Hearted, An English King from the Original Holy Wars has asked England to help the Pope, by invading Germany, the birthplace of Protestantism. (Monte Carlo) The Monaco Grand Prix will be cancelled this year due to excessive military activities in the area. Jackie Quewert was going for his second straight win there. (Moscow) The Czar, in a far-ranging interview with the Associated Press, broke a long silence today to reveal some of his views on the current world situation. "I am disturbed by some things I see," Czar Nicholas II said. "It is hard for me to see who Russia's friends are, these days." In his first public statement since the current European conflict began, the Czar counseled other world leaders not to be, as he put it, "misled by those who have spread false rumors and base accusations in my name. I have not, until this moment, said anything about anybody!" The leader of all the Russians noted that relations with Germany are proving "particularly vexing. I thought our foriegn ministers had reached at least a preliminary understanding; but now, the Kaiser, who I have known since we were young princes, won't even take my calls." Citing rumors of a Anglo-German alliance, Nicholas added, "The situation in the northern areas will require careful watching." The Czar would not comment on rumored French overtures for an alliance against Germany and England, but called such speculation "premature." The situation in the Balkans, Czar Nicholas noted, "is very delicate. It appears that Austria is attemtping to assert a hegemony that would prove completely unacceptable." The Turkish Sultan, the Czar said, "Is the kind of leader with whom one can do business. We hope for a long, fruitful relationship with Constantinopol, however it's spelled." The Czar also expressed hope for a future relationship with Italian leadership, saying, "The Italian people and the Russian people have always had a mutual high regard for each other. And I love linguini." (Moscow) The Czar has outlawed all press in the nation. There will be no more press from Russia, whatsoever. (New York) The Sultan of Turkey's sexual conduct over the past few months has caused alarm in all the nations of Europe. There are fears of the Sultan catching a disease and going crazy. Comments one European analyst, "Then he'll be like all the rest of the Monarchs and Popes over there! Only France has a President, and thus a stable leader. The rest of them? All that inbreeding, causes madness." (Paris) President Richard declared that none of the press attributed to him in the Fall of 1901 was actually his. Furthermore, he has no intention of invading Italy. "Why? They don't play hockey there! And what else is there? Lasagne? Who eats that crud?" (Roma) The Pope has declared that the Holy Roman Empire will exist once more. He has sent forth his army and navy to convert Austria, Africa and Germany back to the proper Catholic Faith. The navies are considering a long shot at the Holy Land. (Rome) Our foreign affairs correspondent has quoted President Maurice Richard of France as saying that not only Piedmont is in fact a French province, but that the very same arguments also apply to Venice, Rome and particularly Tuscany. (Washington) The Senate has voted unanimously to annex the Canadian Province of Quebec. The establishment of the Richard line just outside Montreal has caused concern regarding the dominance of the US in hockey in the future. Forces have gathered along the Canadian-American border. The deadline! Fall '02 (orders and press): Sunday March 11, 1990 at 22:00h (MET). Ciao lads! Lord Constantine /----------------------------------------------------------------------------\ Date: Mon, 5 Mar 90 15:40:51 est TANNENBURG (1989HZ) -- Endgame Statements ENGLAND: Oh, how happy it makes me to see the thieving Germans surrender. I'd also like to comment that we had perhaps the most organized GM that I've seen running a diplomacy game (all right, his competition was a computer program and my current GM, but I'm still impressed). And it was also nice to see that my performance wasn't as dismal as it seemed... if only Germany hadn't completely decimated my home territories in one year by lying no less... but that's OK, I'm in another life now. Enjoyed playing with you all. RUSSIA: I almost have to say that the funnest thing about this particular game was the press, especially that of Germany. As the game unfolded, it seemed to me that the game was going to be a typical case of two big Western powers (Germany, France) against two big Eastern powers (Turkey and myself). We had an alliance from the beginning and, as was evident, we set our sights on Austria first. As England began to fall to Germany and France proceeded to gain territory, I figured we were going to get beaten. The one thing that kept it interesting was the Italian fleet that crept to the west and ended up doing a lot of damage to Germany. I would like to thank everyone who played, and also our GM for doing such a great job of keeping things interesting and moving along. TURKEY: My View: Well, things started off very slowly, and I must say that I was sort of suprised that Russia never stabbed me, given that we went nowhere for at least two years, but once AH stabbed Italy, it was all over. AH hated me by that point (I was never clear quite why, aside from the fact that I kept attacking him...), but still thought I would stab Russia for him, giving us an opportunity to invade. Things were going quite nicely, if a bit slow, (yes, Russia moving into Con for a turn was part of the plan; as I recall, I got to take Tri that year, instead of trying to get Russia into Bud), until Germany helped Russia back into Scandanavia, and then stabbed England, leading England to give the rest of Scan to Russia and gave him Denmark. At that point Russia got so big he didn't need me anymore, and the rest is history. I was busy trying to get into position to attack France, while keeping Italy alive (he was such a handy nuisance...) and kept running into the Russian fleet in the Ion (why I didn't just push myself in at least a year earlier, I'll never know.) Any way, Germany crumbled fast, while Russia was in no position to help me much, so in the end he got greedy and went for the solo win. Oh well. Good allies are a wonderful thing, until they start getting bigger than you. I've learned my lesson. Dave. [Addendum:] I might have been inclined to do something to stop the White menace, along about the turn before he moved to Rum, and maybe even after (I had notions of allying with France, which might have been reasonably effective, if we'd acted fast enough) except that the whole game got pretty boring about the time I got into Apu. The french wouldn't have stood a chance if Russia and I had gone after them, and things were moving too slow, and were too simple. Really, the Italians made things too easy, and weren't even interested in staying alive. He kept inviting us (Russia and I) to invade his homeland before France got it. I kept him alive for so long because he was more useful where he was. Unfortunately, this meant I grew very slowly; my usual tendency to concentrate on long range goals while overlooking short term goals. Live and Learn. GM: Do you mean to tell me that LYING went on in this game?!!!? I'm shocked!!! (Heh, heh.) I'm glad you had a good time. I sure had a good time running this game. Here's how it looked from my point of view. My comments are based primarily on the board positions -- I know very little of the diplomatic maneuvering that went on. A move that looked like a mistake to me may have been made for a compelling diplomatic reason. So take these comments with a grain of salt. This game had some unusual features. A successful Russian convoy to Swe in 1901 is very rare indeed! Maybe that should have tipped us off that Russia was destined for glory. You also don't see England move to Hel very often in the first year. It's so obviously anti-German. If you move to Ska you can tell the Germans it's anti-Russian while you tell the Russians it's anti-German (it may not work, but you have a shot). This move by England led to the building of two German fleets, and thence to the invasion of England. England usually doesn't want to see non-English fleets built! Fall, 1902 saw Austria plunge into Italy just as the first evidence of an R/T alliance appeared -- Turkey's support of the Russian A Rum. This turned out to be fatal; Austria needs Italian seapower to counter a strong R/T. If the R/T alliance was on from the start of the game (as indicated in the statements above) then the fake R/T war really paid dividends. Moving the Russian fleet through Con was a good piece of deception as well, but when no R/T war resulted it was clear from my viewpoint that the two powers were working together very closely indeed. Notice how slowly Russia moved to a winning position. Even at the end of 1903 there was no evidence that he was headed for a win -- in fact he seemed to be in trouble up north. When things look bad remember -- you never know what may happen! Germany wiped out England as quickly as you'll ever see it done, but by then the real question was this: can the western powers get their act together in time to stop the east? For some reason they never did mount an effective defense, and as Russia and Turkey both point out, the Italian played a big part in this. I believe the game could have been stalemated as late as 1907 if F/G/I had worked together, but it was not to be -- apparently there was too much bad feeling. By 1907 Turkey was feeling the disadvantages inherent in an R/T alliance -- Russia's prospects for growth in the midgame are far better than Turkey's. Turkey fights his way step by step through the Mediterranean as Russia's units pour across Germany and into England. This alliance often leads to a Russian win when this happens, and so it was in this game. Congratulations to Russia, who played a very patient opening and then seized the opportunity for a win when it presented itself. Thanks, too, to the rest of you for an interesting and competitive game. I hope I see you all again sometime.
