Larry GM's comments: As much as I like the concept of 1914 diplomacy, I think the game itself leaves a lot to be desired. Bombers are a very interesting idea, and the ability to wage economic warfare is appealing to me. I also like the economics of building/maintaining an army. Basically, I like 1914 diplomacy for the same reason I enjoyed my one game of Machiavelli: earning ducats/SPs and then deciding how to spend them adds a large amount of enjoyment to the game. The bad part about 1914 diplomacy is the number of countries. 5 countries is simply not enough. The diplomacy has been taken out of the game. Just like in regular Diplomacy, the beginning of the game appears to be a struggle to eliminate 2 powers. In Diplomacy, that leaves 5 countries to slug it out. In 1914, it only leaves 3. When a country is attacked, you have very few places to turn to for help. I wonder what 1914 style diplomacy would be like if Italy and Turkey were major powers instead of minors. I think that would make for a good game. As a side note to Eric, as I recall, there is a version of diplomacy (Youngstown variant, perhaps?) which involves 10 - 12 players. Do you have the rules/board for it? Also, you've never put together an Armored diplomacy game. They're a lot of fun and I should still have the rules around here somewhere. Armored is the same as Regular, except you can build tanks at a cost of 2 SCs. Tanks attack and defend with a strength of 2. Hmm, Armored diplomacy with bombers. Just add the bomber rules from 1914 to Armored diplomacy. Now there's a thought. Well, enough for now. Bye. Jamie, the Renegade Czar Teheran - The Shah has officially declared Twinkies to be "the Official Junk Food of the 1900 Olympics". Athletes from all nations met in Teheran last month for three weeks of competitions. The most prestigious event, the marathon, was left undecided as the Renegade House of Romanov's entry, Ivan Tuvin, was disqualified by shooting the Lazarian judge with his AK47, as well as all the other competitors. The 100-metre dash was postponed pending The Shah's new legislation repealing the old legislation which demanded the death penalty for anybody caught using the metric system. In its place, the 100-furlong dash was won by The Delian League's entry, Joe Shah (no relation), who stole the starting pistol, re-loaded it with bullets and picked off everybody who was ahead of him. I'd have to say that Russia is the better ally. With three fleets you can easily bottle up Turkey's seaward expansion and your two armies are in a good position to stop Turkey on land too. It runs international and national regular postal Diplomacy games and comes out every seven weeks in order to allow enough negotiation time for the international games. It contains and editorial, usually two articles and a letter column. At the moment he runs three Dippies and and Imperial Governor, an easy to learn wargame in which ancient people struggle for hegemony around the Mediterranean. 80% of the zine is written in English, which is also the negotiation language of the international games. There are subbers and players from all over the world, i. e. Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, the U.K., Sweden, the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. There are no game fees, but you have to maintain a sub of DIPLOMAT. For Europeans the zine costs DM 2.50 and for oversea subbers DM 3.00.
