Diplomacy by e-mail has got to be the best way to play this game! I'd like to thank Peter Woodruffe for GM'ing our game. Since the players in the game were spread over 5 countries on 2 continents I'm sure he faced many unique problems. Through it all, Peter kept the game going and more or less to a reasonable schedule. Thanks, Peter. -- Italy played the kingmaker in NAVARONE. I owe a great deal of my victory to Italy (Graham Wilson); that's one of the reasons that I decided to go after Russia in Scandinavia for the win rather than stomp Italy. Another reason is that Graham and I were the only Canadians in the game ... and that's got to count for something (at least that's what Graham says) :-) Italy set the tone for the whole game in 1901. He came north and attacked Germany rather than stay in the east. By 1902, Germany was facing a 4 way alliance and was doomed. Italy's intervention in the west meant that things were able to stablized sooner in the west than in the east. Whoever could dominate the west (France) could interfere in the east. In 1903, I stabbed England. I'm sure that Rajeev (England) was taken entirely by surprise. He may have expected a stab, but not before Germany was gone. I stabbed England while Germany was still a viable power (3 centres). Timing counted for everything in the success of the stab. In the same season that I stabbed England, he had to destructed his army in Belgium and he convoyed his other army to Scandinavia. It was also in that season that England/Germany pushed Russia out of Sweden. Everything came together and France was left as the only major power in the west while the east was still pretty unstable. After that, Russia/Germany/England just couldn't seem to get organized to ally against me. They continued to squabble amongst themselves and I was able to take out England and Germany separately and alone. Russia was busy in the south and left the north pretty much to me. It wasn't until after France dominated the west that Russia/Turkey managed to get organized in the east. At this point, Italy was in bad shape. He was caught between a super-power (France) and a support-alliance (Russia/Turkey). My strategy was to keep him alive. In exchange for Tunis (which is across the stalemate line), I helped him defend against the Russia/Turkey hoards. There was very little risk to me ... Russia/Turkey had to get through Italy before they could touch any of my supply centres. With Italy as an ally, I had three extra units (Italian) to defend the Mediterranean which meant I could dedicate more units to Scandinavia and the north. The conquest of Scandinavia was slow and methodical. I was lucky that Russia never managed to get more than one fleet in the north. I managed to get five units into position and that was that. Thanks to everyone for an interesting game. I hope we meet again in another game. Dave Edmunds (FRANCE) ITALY Well, it was a wierd but fun game. Throughout the game I have been allied (at different times) with France, Austria, Turkey and Russia. When it became apparent that the game was going to be between France and Russia/Turkey, I had to decide - who do I support? I was going to support Russia/Turkey, but after being shut out of Austria ("sure you can have Trieste..."), I figured that they simply wanted me for food supplies. I sided with France for the sole purpose of surviving. If I can't win, I want to be around at the end of the game. Italy ended the game with all of her home centers intact. Congrats to Dave for well-played game, and special applause for Paul Vick's (Austria) witty press releases. Now that the game is over, we can continue our interrupted "Trans-Europe Elvis Twins Tour" King Graham Wilson Kingdom of Italy RUSSIA Thanks to Turkey for a fine alliance. I hope that we could play again soon, preferably on the same side :-) TURKEY Congrats to Dave Edmunds, who plays a tough game. The eventual outcome was greatly affected by my and Russia's failure to gel into action early on. I should have forced my way into ION a year earlier than I did and Hannu's expidition into Germany was pointless. We didn't really gel into action untill 06 and by then it was to late to stoop the French juggernaut. Thanks to you peter for administering this diificult game (mailwise!) **************** Pete's Points: After a successful early stab of England, France ground out a seemingly inexorable victory, aided in the late stages by help from a barely surviving Italy. Herewith the final table and closing statements. It was a pleasure to GM this game; thanks to the help all of you gave in maintaining communications across five countries and two continents.
