Diplomacy Zine --- The Lost Chapter From: tedward@durin.cs.cornell.edu (Ted Fischer) Date: Sat, 19 May 1990 05:51:44 +0000 Chapter Two of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL: This chapter contains results from DRAGONSLAYER, BISMARCK, COLD WAR, and gunboat games JACAL, VERSAILLES, MANHATTAN, and DRESDEN. France -> England: I agree to your offer of cease-fire. Now, if you move your fleet(s) away from ECh or/and Iri I could move my fleet(s) to the south. I hope that Pic could remain demilitarized. France -> Germany: I am not opposed to German-English cooperation as long as you don't cooperate against me. I cannot move away from Burgundy now because three non-friendly (maybe) units are facing it, but I will move away as soon as possible. France -> Italy: I hope that we could continue our friendly relations. France -> Russia: Indeed you are releiving some pressure that was on me! Germany --> England: Notice that I have no intention of building fleets which would impinge on your sphere of influence later, hence the A BER build. If Russia has disbanded F NWY, then I'll be free to move Sweden to help you take St. Pete; otherwise, I'll support an attack by you from NWY to help crunch this unit unless you have expressed a desire otherwise. Germany --> France: Well, what DO you say to peace even if I help England against my enemy Russia? Germany --> Italy: Glad to see we're finally making some headway. Assuming I don't have to turn around and fight France again, I'll be hoofing it across Central Europe for Warsaw and would appreciate support once I am there. If you have requested it, I will attempt to cut a support if I can either this season or in the Fall. In the other season I'll be working on establishing position in PRU and SIL for an attack on Warsaw. Germany --> Turkey: Glad to see a new regime down there! As you can see, things are looking up around here. See you in Moscow perhaps? Turkey -> Italy: Yeah, so how about Rumania? Remember- I won't scratch your back unless you scratch mine. With Austria gone, we are going to have to work together in order to do well- are you up to it? Turkey -> France and Germany You had better watch your backs- Italy is growing quite strong- Russia will not last long enough for Italy to worry about, and I am buried away to tight in the corner for Italy to fight successfully, and you two have wide open backs... Turkey -> England, Germany, & Italy- Party next winter in Moscow- I'll provide the booze- you bring the food! Italy -> France The fleet in ROME was a purely defensive build. Don't over-react! Now that you appear to have come to some sort of agreement with ENGLAND/GERMANY in the north, I don't want these southern pastures to look too tempting. Italy and France have managed to stay out of each other's way so far ... let's keep it that way. PIEDMONT, GoL, WEST MED and NAF are DMZ. Ok? Italy -> Germany Bye bye RUSSIA. Hit him again. WARSAW is your's in 1904. Italy -> Turkey Hello ally ... and bye bye RUSSIA. France -> England: If you attack me I'm in trouble. France -> Germany: I think you can move away from Ruhr now. France -> Turkey: What about joint naval operations on the Mediterranean? We have four fleets against Italy's three (-: Italy -> Turkey I couldn't support you into RUMANIA this season. I needed SERBIA to protect my army in BUDAPEST. Don't worry ... it's Spring. You can have RUMANIA in the Fall for your build. Be patient. Italy -> France I DO read your messages to other countries, you know. Don't be foolish and send your fleets south. ENGLAND is about to reach the end of her potential northern expansion ... you WILL be next. You survived the last ENGLAND/GERMANY offensive only because I stayed out of it. I am prepared to continue the non-agression policy between FRANCE and ITALY, but I will not hesitate to join ENGLAND and GERMANY next time if you decide to come south. This is not a threat ... it's a promise. Ger --> Eng: You've got my support for whichever unit you want into St. Pete. If you didn't indicate, I will assume Norway. This is, of course, assuming I made it to Sweden. I'm worried that France no longer seems to have any enemies at all. I doubt that he's just going to sit tight unless he has indicated such in his press. I still feel that war with him would be a waste for all involved since we would all stagnate for at least three years while involved, so I am planning do demobilize that border as soon as possible, as my moves have indicated this turn. I'd also like to see you get that army in Belgium up into St. Pete eventually. Ger --> Fra: Well, depending upon how quickly Russia has collapsed under these multiple attacks, I will be off of your border as soon as I can as I believe these moves indicate. I still am concerned over just what you will do now that everything is hunky-dorey between the four Western powers. I hope that I have made my non-aggressive position quite clear in both my moves and press. You and I have nothing to gain from war. Ger --> Ita: Depending upon how many of my positional moves have succeeded, I may try for Warsaw in the upcoming season. If you are in a position to cut a Russian support at that time, I would greatly appreciate it. I wasn't sure what you planned to do with your units this turn, so I'm sorry if we bounced in Boh. If I am there this turn (it was to clear out Munich and facilitate our attack on Russia), then I will support your A VIE-GAL unless you have indicated you want something else. If we did bounce in Bohemia, then I suggest that in the future, we make that a DMZ and further agree that I will remain North of GAL and BOH while you stay South of BOH, SIL, and WAR. We'll figure out who takes Moscow when we get there, ok? If I'm in Boh, I'll move out after I've given you support if you need it. Ger --> Tur: There certainly won't be any hard feelings if you can manage to grab Moscow before the rest of us get there. I'll send you a telegram of congrats from my friendly army in Warsaw. Ger --> Rus: We should rename this game from Jacal to Dogpile, eh? England -> Germany If I don't take StPete in the Spring, please support "Eng F Norway -> StPete" in the fall. Muchly appreciated. If all goes well, I propose a 1905 swap of Sweden for Belgium. This would allow my army to be used in the great invasion of Russia. The following idea is for when things have settled. I would maintain a fleet in Norway, leaving Sweden and the North Sea empty. Your fleet would reside in Kiel (leaving the Baltic and Denmark empty). Such an arrangement would make "stabbing" at tad more difficult. Comments old chap? England -> France I hope we can be friends now. The pickings in Russia are far easier! The fleet in the Irish Sea is retreating to the Norwegian Sea next turn, and then on to Clyde (assuming there are no French incursions...). I propose we leave E.C., Irish and Norwegian as DMZ's. If so required, I place the English fleet currently residing in the Irish Sea at the service of France against any potential invasion from the Med... England -> Russia You were just too damn greedy! Turkey -> Italy I would feel much better about things once our fleets are out of greece and the ionian...Makes a nice DMZ, what say? Anyways, I hope we can both profit nicely this turn! Turkey -> Austria Hey, wait, you're gone already, aren't you... ':-) Turkey -> Germany See you in Moscow! Russia -> Turkey: Thanks for giving me something to care about in this game. Having been here only one turn longer than you my heart really wasn't into continuing the previous player's suicidal attack on Germany and England. ANONYMOUS to FRANCE ------------------- The Italian fleet in Rome a "defensive" build? Ya sure, and my mother is Elvis! Spain looks pretty good this time of year... ANONYMOUS to TURKEY ------------------- To win, Italy must destroy you. Beware! =============================================================================== JACAL - Summer 1904 ------------------- France -> England: After Russia is destroyed you must select your next enemy. I hope it's not me. PS Are we using the same map? According to my map you can't move Irish Sea -> Norwegian Sea. However, I am willing to demilitarize English Channel, Irish Sea and North Atlantic. France -> Germany: After the spring moves we are not in a position to attack each other succesfully. I hope that it will stay that way. PS I could use your help against Italy if you feel like it. France -> Italy: Last fall, I had two possibilities. Either I wait until England, Germany and you, after destroying Russia, attack me or I start attacking myself. In winter, I had decided to invade England when you built a fleet in Rome and forced me to change my plans. France -> Russia: You are in trouble, and I am afraid that my attack on Italy is not enough to save you. France -> Turkey: If you want to liberate new territories after Russia has been destroyed you must fight Italy. What about joint naval operations on the Mediterranean before Italy gets too strong? PS Considering the movements of Italian naval forces it seems that she is thinking about taking Greece. Germany --> England: It looks like you've got St. Pete all taken care of, so I'm going to be moving the fleet back toward Kiel unless you've requested otherwise. I'm in full support of your DMZ proposal, but I don't think we need to trade supply centers. It would be pretty inconvenient for me to move an army all the way back to Belgium. Can you perform the necessary moves to get an army into St. Pete using Finland as a base instead of Sweden? If not, I'll move an army back to trade with you. Germany --> France: Wow! You really caught me by surprise, but I'm glad to be able to use my units elsewhere without having to worry about my back. Germany --> Italy: I'll still support whichever unit you want into Galicia (the army in Budapest unless you've said otherwise). I have no quarrel with you and will be keeping myself busy enough not to want to mess around with all of your armies. I'll be reading the press from both you and France with great interest in the seasons to come, but surely you both must realize how attractive fence-sitting is in my situation. Germany --> Turkey: Speaking of fence-sitting, I'm glad I don't have to make your decision! Italy -> France: Oh well ... that was a mistake. England is at the end of her northern expansion. It's France or Germany next ... and I vote for France. Italy -> England: Time to come south. The only reason France survived your last invasion is that Italy didn't interfere. There is now a French army on Italian soil ... I will not sit out this time. Forget SWEDEN ... send your army to PICARDY and retake the Channel. This time FRANCE will fall. Italy -> Germany: Come home to BURGUNDY. There's easy pickings to be gained in FRANCE. WARSAW is going to be a tough nut. You need your fleet from FINLAND into the GULF OF BOTHNIA before we can crack it. Italy -> Turkey: Now go for RUMANIA ... my Austrian holdings are now secure. RUSSIA is going to be a much easier target than ITALY. England -> France: Everything is resolved. Good. BTW, do you need an extra fleet? Of course, it would cost you ... how 'bout Venice (1/2 :-) ? England -> Germany: I'll be convoying my army from Belgium to Norway this fall. In 1905 I'll move into Sweden and you move into Belgium. Ok? I suggest in 1906 that you move your unit (an army I assume) in Belgium back to Holland to keep France happy. England -> Turkey: See you in Moscow... =============================================================================== JACAL - FALL 1904 ----------------- Failed moves in () ENGLAND ITALY ------- ----- F Iri -> ECh A Trl -> Ven A Bel -> Hol A Vie S A Bud F Nth -> Den A Bud S A Vie F StP/NC Hold (A Ser -> Gre) F Bar S F StP/NC F Tyn -> Tus F Ion -> Tun FRANCE F Alb -> Ion ------ A Pie -> Trl RUSSIA A Mar -> Pie ------ A Bre -> NAf (A Mos -> Sev) F MAO C A Bre -> NAf (A War S A Liv) F Wes -> Tyn (A Liv S A Mos) A Gal -> Ukr GERMANY F Rum -> Bla ------- F Fin -> GoB TURKEY A Sil -> Gal ------ (A Pru -> War) F Aeg S F Gre A Boh S A Sil -> Gal (F Gre S A Con -> Bul) A Mun S A Ber -> Sil A Bul -> Rum A Ber -> Sil (A Arm -> Sev) A Con -> Bul RETREATS -------- NONE Unit Positions -------------- AUS: OUT ENG: F Bar, StP/NC, Den, ECh A Hol FRA: F Tyn, MAO A Naf, Trl, Pie GER: F GoB A Sil, Mun, Pru, Gal, Boh ITA: F Tus, Ion, Tun A Bud, Ser, Ven, Vie RUS: F Bla A Mos, Liv, War, Ukr TUR: F Gre, Aeg A Bul, Rum, Arm SUPPLY CENTERS: -------------- A: OUT [0] E: (+3) Edi,Lvp,Lon,Bel,Nwy,+Hol,+Den,+StP [8] F: (0) Bre,Par,Mar,Spa,Por [5] G: (-2) Kie,Ber,Mun,Swe,-Hol,-Den [4] I: (+1) Ven,Rom,Nap,Tun,Tri,Ser,Bud,+Vie [8] R: (-3) Mos,War,Sev,-Vie,-Rum,-StP [3] T: (+1) Con,Ank,Smy,Gre,Bul,+Rum [6] Note: Russia only needs to disband 2 more because of an earlier disband. Turkey -> France: I don't want to appear uncooperative, but I must wait until after this turn to make any further commitments one way or the other. I know it is frustrating to wait a turn, but I must be sure of my position before I go wandering out across the board in any direction. I don't want the same thing happening to me that happened to Russia earlier...I believe you understand. Turkey -> Italy: I hope your intentions towards the east are friendly- because if they are not, you will find that removing a stubborn Turkey takes up quite a bit of time for anybody- and you can't rely on anybody to help you, either- That means you have to move a lot of units to get rid of me, inviting both the french >and< germans to team up and eat pasta. Not a threat, mind you, but at this juncture, you would be most wise to look elsewhere to attack. We can have a nice strong alliance- I move north, you move west. Simple and fair. I've no intentions right now to attack you- you've given me no such provocations. Let's keep it that way, eh? Turkey -> England: Hey- how are things up north? Just a quick hi! England -> Germany: Forgive me. (If you just happen to be a particular player then this is very ironic). England -> France: I am not aiming any of my attacks against you! I STILL WANT TO BE YOUR ALLY! You can have Munich (I will support you in). With Russia collapsing (and now Germany thanks to me) I have no need EVER to go against you. We can and should stay allied till the end of the game! The fleet in the English Channel is simply there to help against Germany - it will move away as soon as possible. We can keep E.C., Irish, and NAO as DMZ's. What do you think? This can work - lets give it a try. Russia -> Turkey: If Germany gets to Moscow he's not going to see you there. Russia -> France: I greatly appreciate the way you are rewarding me for the previous Russian player's mistake of relieving the anglo/german siege of France. But don't worry. They should be back soon. And this time with Italy. I must say that you are playing an interesting strategy. Screw your ally who went out on a limb for you, withdraw from the front where your enemies are, and then attack another country who has done nothing to you (and could have been a potential ally as well). Russia -> England: It wasn't *me* who was too greedy. But I'll just have to make the best of a bad situation. Btw, I'm sure you realize that since I can't take St. Pete's back and France is fighting on his southern front that you have another great opportunity at hand. A much better deal than going for Moscow :-). Russia -> Italy: If you want to mobilize against France and discontinue your attacks on Russia (including offensive or defensive support for Turkey) I will not attack any Italian positions. Only Turkish centers. Hopefully, this will keep Turkey too occupied to attack you. On the other hand, maybe now is a good time to try and grab a few Turkish centers while you have some extra support from me. I don't think England or Germany will be able to give you the same level of support once I am gone. France -> World: Do I know what I am doing? I am not sure :-) France -> England: If you stab me, I'm dead. France -> Germany: What are you plans regarding England? France -> Italy: Here we go... France -> Russia: Good luck! You need it. France -> Turkey: I have not received an answer to my query about joint operations against Italy. Germany --> England: Things are a little too dicey on my border with Italy and France for me to spare A MUN-RUH followed by A RUH-BEL. I can see how you would want to consolidate your supply centers and all, but can you please wait until after I get another build? I'm going to be busy taking Warsaw soon (I hope). Germany --> France: Again, I am glad that we no longer have a quarrel on our border, but I cannot help you against Italy. I have extended my forces much too far against Russia to turn South now. You are both putting me in a very difficult diplomatic situation. Please realize this before condemning my ambivalence. My position is just too unstable at this time to risk entrance into a new battle of such scope. Germany --> Italy: I truly hope that I have guessed correctly in that you have decided not to extend yourself further by taking Galicia. Because of this, and because of the fact that I want to continue my assault on Warsaw drawing on as little of your strength as possible, I have decided to try to take it myself. If I failed, could you support me in next turn? Once I am in, I will take Warsaw from there and vacate Bohemia if this is ok with you. If I didn't get in this turn and you have expressed opposition to my move in the Winter press, then I will again try to support your unit in Budapest in when Spring comes around. If you support my plan, however, and want to move your forces back toward France, then say so in the press and I will vacate your border as soon as I have taken Warsaw. Either way, I must know what you want me to do before I can decide on a course of action. My intention to stay out of your conflict with France is firm. Germany --> Turkey: I'll be interested to see which choice you made this turn. Assuming you have stuck with Italy, I hope that you, too, will understand that my actions are intended only as a benefit to myself and our mutual ally, Italy. I still intend to support you into Moscow if you want it. Germany --> Russia: You had a chance to buy yourself some time this turn with some aggressive defense in Central Europe. For your sake, I hope you did so. Italy -> England and Germany It is time to continue your invasion of France. I can hold his armies and fleet for a long time. His northern border is wide open. Italy -> France Withdraw your forces and all will be foregiven. I can wait ... can you? ANONYMOUS to WORLD ------------------ England really thinks he can profit from northern territories alone? Right. France, France, France- when will you see the threat that the Italians pose? Germany is going to get caught in the middle when Italy, France and England roll on over him like steamroller. Italy had better learn a lesson from the Russians- to long a stretch of the back is inviting more room to stab upon it. Russia might pull out an upset- he will upset the Germans and Turks invading into his turf- and failing... Turkey is going to be pasta filling if he ain't careful. I would consider moving west. =============================================================================== That's all from Jacal for now. Cheers, Lord Valentine Up
