Diplomacy Zine -- EP #166 Chapter Five From: Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com Date: Fri, 18 May 1990 03:10:46 +0000 Issue #166 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL: ************************************************************************** She found the racks and took one package of everything she could see, two or three of some of the vegetables and fruits. When she was done, her basket was filled with about ten pounds of seed packages. The clerk looked at the pile in bewilderment. Hoffman threw two hundred-dollar bills down on the counter. "Will that be enough?" she asked. "I think so--" "Keep what's left over," she said, "I'm in a hurry and I don't have time to count them all." "Let me get the manager--" "I don't have time," she repeated, and she took out another bill and laid it next to the two. "I'm sure that will cover it," the clerk said quickly, swallowing. "Thank you. Put them in a box for me?" ************************************************************************** Chapter One contains: BLITZKRIEG, GETTYSBURG, BUSHIDO, RED STORM RISING, and COMRADES IN ARMS And is published by daybell@aludra.usc.edu/Donald Daybell Chapter Two contains: DRAGONSLAYER, BISMARK, COLD WAR, JACAL, MANHATTAN, VERSAILLES, and DRESDEN And is published by tedward@cs.cornell.edu/Ted Fischer Chapter Three contains: MULHOUSE, DAWN PATROL, SNIKKEL-2, BERLIN, SNIKKEL-1, EL ALAMEIN, SQUALANE, UNGAWE, CAPTAIN CAVEMAN And is published by cwekx@htikub5.bitnet/Constantijn Wekx Chapter Four contains: FIRE WHEN READY, DREADNOUGHT, JUGGERNAUGHT, BIG WILLIE, NICKEL, and OZARK And is published by lord_zar@ucrmath.ucr.edu/Wayne Wallace ------------- Chapter Five ------------- Spring '06 of the game BUSHIDO (BNC number 1989IN) (GM is jall@diku.dk/Mogens Jallberg) Due May 8th (Game being moved to Chapter One) Spring '05 of the game TOKUGAWA (BNC number 1989IS) (GM is rc0o@andrew.cmu.edu/Rob Cochran) Due May 11 Endgame statements of the gunboat game VERDUN (MNC number 1989AZrb32) (GM is eric_s_klien@cup.portal.com/Eric Klien) GM Notes: I was very surprised when my computer program said that Italy had jumped from 13 supply centers to 18! The name of the third French player has been withheld at player request. Whatever makes people happy. Endgame statements: ITALY: Well, I never expected things to turn out this way this year! Five builds is a record for me, especially at that stage of the game. Verdun was alot of fun--I greatly prefer the gunboat format. I'd like to thank Germany, who was partly responsible for the rapid downfall of France....I truly wanted to support him back to Kiel! England's inspired convoys late in the game were also a big help. Turkey sure gave me a good fight...his defensive position was difficult to crack. I never really figured the Czar out, but we did manage some cooperation. Austria gave me a couple of breaks early that allowed for rapid growth of the Italian navies. I'd also like to thank Eric for taking over as GM when it was clear that Verdun was dead in the water. It's always a pleasure dealing with him....except possibly as an adversary! Always remember: Never underestimate a woman! Thanks for a great game... Jeanette Roberts FRANCE: It was over for me before it really started. (-: TURKEY: Well played Italy. I complained about you and threatened you a lot in the press, but the fact is that you never really made any promises to me that you didn't keep. I just didn't want a war with you that early so did things out of the ordinary to prevent it. Hind sight (which is usually 20/20) tells me that I shouldn't have tried to save Austria as I wasted several key turns while you positioned your men. In the end, I was just trying to stay alive till you got your 18 centers. It's a good thing it happened this turn! Great come back Russia. I really didn't have anything against you personally, but it looked like Italy was doing a good number on Austria already and when you moved your fleet into Rumania instead of the army (which means you couldn't support any future moves toward Austria), I felt that you were headed my way. I would have played that part the same had I the opportunity to do it over again. I felt the campaign was actually going pretty well until Italy stomped on my feet. I didn't know he would be so insistant on the Balkans when France looked so available. We tried Austria. Actually, at the outset of the game, my sights were set on early domination of the Balkans and Austria. However, like I wrote to Russia, his move and Italy's success changed my strategy. Things went pretty well till I changed my mind about eliminating you. You can count your press as successful at that point. England, France and Germany. Well, we didn't get the opportunity to work together on this one, but then we weren't really fighting each other either. To all. It's been fun. Looking forward to future games. RUSSIA: Wow! I was expecting several more years of pushing and shoving before anyone won this game. Congratulations to Italy for a well executed blitzkrieg attack. I've been away from Diplomacy for several years (and boy did it show), but this was a very enjoyable way to get back into it. Thanks to everyone involved for a good game and again congratulations to Italy. Please all check in and vote a) to continue b) to search for a sub. and let me know if you will be gone for summer. Regards Harry Press: Paris (Voulez-Vous) President Demon was greeted by millions of jubulent Frenchmen at the Eiffel Tower today. After news spread of the great French victories in Italy and England, a national holiday was declared and the people swarmed into the streets. Excerpts from the Presidents speech: "Today France ascends to the leadership of Europe. This position is tenuous, and with it comes a great responsibility. We will not forget those with whom we have worked so hard to achieve this position! Our goals, after the destruction of our enemies, is to maintain the new balance in Europe. Germany and Austria, which have aided us in our cause, will soon join us as new "super-powers". The old balance, faulty and prone to war, will give way to a new balance, where peace will predominate!" At this point a shot rang out. Government sources report that it was merely a shot fired in joy by one of the policemen, but unconfirmed reports tell of a woman, dressed in trenchcoat and wig, toting a large caliber rifle through the streets of Paris. Tunis (Juliet) French naval forces today liberated the North African province of Tunisia. Admiral Qu'est que C'est reported that no casualties were suffered, except for a few cases of "butt-burn" resulting from over indulgence in the local food. London (Mal a la Tete) The new Marshal de l'Angleterre, Le Beouf Teque, today implemented the orders of occupation. 1) All citizens will learn French or German, as English is so hard to diagram in class. 2) Tea will be replaced by wine. It's better for you. 3) All the horrendous buildings associated with the "Royal Family" will be torn down and replaced by elegant French Chateaus and Palaces. 4) The name Napoleon will replace Wellington where ever it occurs. Thus the title Duke of Wellington will now be Duke of Napoleon. Tuscany (Bordeaux) The French "Fleet of Liberation" today completed it's occupation of Tuscany. Large quantities of Pizza were seen being loaded onto French vessels. Rome would seem to be the next destination of the French navy, but the new Armee du Sud in Marsielles is pushing for war with Spain. It is not known if the Marshal there knows that Spain is our ally. Spring '01 of the game DEADLY DAGGERS (BNC number not known) (GM is demon@eve.wright.edu/Brett Kottman) Eric, I'm having trouble with email again. We got one address in England to work correctly (Mark Lorrimer-Roberts) which is mlr@pyschology.nott.ac.uk however, the address for Phil Honeybone, which used to work, no longer does. His email address is pjrh%ukc.ac.uk@earn-relay.ac.uk (or something close to that). His mail and Mark's mail get enveloped together and both make it to the UK. Mark said that my mail was getting hung up at his machines gateway, and this may now be happening to my mail that goes to Phil. Can you have one of you email wizards take a look at this? I'm mailling from a VAX with the return address of demon@wsu.bitnet. Here are the addresses I'm using: Phil: IN%"pjrh%ukc.ac.uk@earn-relay.ac.uk" Mark: IN%"mlr@Psychology.nott.ac.uk" This is for the game Deadly Daggers, which is on hold until we get this cleared up. Grey and Black press will be allowed Turns will take 1 week: Deadline for Spring 1901 orders is Sunday May 20. Your GM is taking his vacation from May 23 to roughly June 3. I'll get the Spring results back before I leave with a firm deadline for Fall 1901. Bach was the greatest composer of his time. So was Handel. Handel was half English, half German, and half Italian. He was very large. Beethoven was also a great composer although he was deaf. He wrote very loud music. He took long walks in the forest even though people were calling him. Scott Copeland editor in chief Yalta Hjournal Spring '01 of the warp game ARCHANGEL (BNC number not known) (GM is gfink@clover.ucdavis.edu/George Fink) Delays. Well, May 15th is here, and I haven't received all the moves, and it doesn't look like I will. I therefore propose the following solution: We will play one season a week, until the first week of June, when we can start our warp pace. The deadline will be Tuesday mornings at 10 PDT, including all conditional retreats, builds, etc. I will publish Spring '01 as soon as I have received a complete set of orders. I still have not received from Austria/Hungary or Italy. BTW, don't worry about lack of contact with A/H. His email is going to be on the fritz for another week. So, Rajeev, you should find a friend who you can trust to play France for the first year or so. Any other questions, problems? I use them if nothing eng else is received by the deadline. 8- Deadlines will be rather short, because we are already in may, and builds and retreats ones won't count: no deadlines for them, only for moves. So if one is late for a build (More time to answer than immediatly), time is lost for negociation for everybody as the deadline for moves won't change for that. 9- Each one of you should tell me his 'war name' as there are no countries in that game. 10- Please ack that mail immediatly, and send me any question you have. I send you the s.c assignment ASAP, this evening I think. Michel Malhomme malhomme@enst.enst.fr for mails caillaud@frunip11.bitnet for bitnet tells only Hi, here are your territories! Welcome to the fifth and last issue of the Newsletter for DipCon/ World DipCon 1990. The main purpose of the newsletter is to serve as a source of information to members of the Hobby about our event this June, as well as to facilitate communications between members of the two Committees who are working to put the thing together. On that note, first order of business is to list everyone who will be involved in DipCon/World DipCon 1990. Please note my new address. DIPCON ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITEE David Hood, Chair and Tournament Director; 104-F Terrace Drive, Cary, NC 27511 Ken Peel; 8708 First Ave. #T2; Silver Spring MD 20910 Tom Nash; CIS Address [73357,1630]; mailing address in transit.... [other tournament committee members are edited out] CON DETAILS: The Con will be held June 22-24, 1990, at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. There will be four rounds of Diplomacy, of which one must play two to become eligible for awards. During the Saturday morning round, the individual scores will also be tabulated by seven-man team for the team competition. Theams are already organizing in California, Virginia, Maryland, Britain, and elsewhere for this event. There will also be tournaments for Diplomacy variants, Gunboat, Railway Rivals, and other games. A Diplomacy Geography Exam to be written by 1989 DipCon champ Edi Birsan will focus on the Diplomacy map and the real-life places represented, and will be an additional event. Fees are $20 entry, $15 per night housing. Certificates will be awarded for the subsidiary tournaments and for places 4-7, but plaques will be awarded to the top three places in the tourney. Edi Birsan has donated plaques for the seven Best Country awards, as well as two other coveted DipCon awards - The "Hammered" trophy and the "Golden Blade" award, for excellence in being stabbed and stabbing, respectively. There will also be certificates awarded to players in games who stick it out in bad positions ("Death with Dignity" awards) similar to those awarded at the 1986 DipCon in Fredricksburg. Avalon Hill Game Company will also be donating prizes for the various competitions. Although the final package has yet to be decided upon it will likely include games, merchandise certificates and free subscriptions to their gaming magazine _The General_. Games donated by other parties for use as prizes so far include BATLLE FOR ITALY, VENTURE, BULL RUN and GUNSLINGER, all Avalon Hill titles. TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE: The first Diplomacy round will begin on Friday, June 22 at 5:00 p.m. Also beginning Friday night will be the Nuclear War tournament, consisting of two rounds. Saturday morning will see the second Dip round, which will also double as the team competition. Consters not into 9:00 am Diplomacy can instead play in one of the continuing competitions described below. After an early dinner the third Dip round will begin at 6:00 pm., as will the Diplomacy variant tournament, which will feature the 5 player variant 1499. Finally, Sunday morning at 9:30 will be the fourth Dipround as well as the starting time for the Civilization tournament. Awards would be given out and the tournament brought to a close around 5:00 or 6:00, depending on the completion time of Round 4 games. OTHER EVENTS: There will be several events to compete in which take place not according to a set schedule, but can be played at any time. These include Titan, Railway Rivals, and Gunboat Diplomacy. Any number of these games can be filled at any time, with a scoring system used that will reward those who play in multiple rounds of a given game. The idea is to have "pick-up" games for these events that will give latecomers, oversleepers, malcontents, etc. something to do besides Diplomacy. In addition, there will likely be unofficial pick-up games for other Diplomacy variants, for which the map and rules will be available for any interested parties (including the hot new variant by Larry Cronin, Perestroika Dip). SCORING SYSTEM: The system to be used for each event or tournament will be outlined in the DipCon booklet, which will be mailed to all registrants in late May. We appreciate all the input received about scoring systems, and we hope we can satisfy at least a sizeable minority of those attending. TRAVEL: Unless one is coming from overseas, you can probably get a direct flight into Raleigh-Durham from any major city. Alternatively, you can fly into Charlotte and carpool with Morgan Gurley and his ilk (address on other side). Internationals should contact me about your travel plans. There will be carpool possibilities for many hobbyists. Mike Gonsalves (1401 Haven Rd #T-6, Hagerstown MD 21740) will be driving his van and can pick up people through MD/DC/VA. Dwayne Shreve (739 Union Church Rd., Elkton MD 21921) can pick people up on I-95 in Northeast MD. Cal White (1 Turnberry Ave., Toronto, Ontario M6N 1P6) can pick up a number of Dippers between Canada and NC. INTERCON: Don't forget the house Con at Jason Bergman's during the week between DipCon and the Origins event the next weekend in Atlanta. There will be open gaming here as well as some room for floor-sleepers and other moochers. Jason also has room for one more in his carpool from Atlanta to DipCon and back. Contact him at PO Box 23780, Atlanta GA 30322. INTERNATIONALS: Pete Sullivan promises two teams from Britain alone, and has begun publishing his own newsletter _Globetrotter_ to help promote World DipCon in the UK. Other Europeans have also expressed interest. The list of possible Australian participants has grown to five. HOUSING: Rooms on campus are available Th/Fr/Sa/Su nights. Here is a list of nearby hotels: Omni Europa (968-4900) $50-60, Carolina Inn (933-2001) $40-60, University Inn (942-4132) $35-50, Siena Hotel (929-4000) $50-60, Red Roof Inn (489-9421) $30-45, Tarheel Motel (929-3090) $26, Holidan Inn (929-2171) $35-50. All numbers are area code 919, and prices are generally proportional to the lavishness of each respective hotel. PUBLICATIONS: There will be a Con booklet ready before the Con, including directions, schedules, etc. and there may also be a souvenir booklet afterwards. If I get written bid proposals for DipCon 1991 I will include them in the Con booklet. There will definitely be a zine table where pubbers can hawk copies of their zines to participants. PARTICIPANTS: Here is an update on likely attendees for the Con: (US) Tom Nash, Ken Peel, Hohn Cho, Tim Moore, James Wall, Lance Anderson, Phil Reynolds, Don Del Grande, Mark Lew, Rex Martin, Steve Cooley, Marc Peters, Jason Bergmann, Edi Birsan, Vince Lutterbie, Cathy Ozog, Ron Spitzer, Larry Peery, John Crosby, Mark Stegeman, Gary Behnen, Dan Mathias, Mike Barno, Jeff Bohner, Lee Kendter Jr., Lee Kendter Sr., Dwayne Shreve, Mike Maston, Pete Fuchs, George Greene, Jeff McKee, Larry Cronin, Jim Yerkey, Frank Alexander, Morgan Gurley, Dan Sellers, Dave McCrumb, Ron Cameron, Bob Odear, Mike Pinkerton, Michael Lowrey, Chris Kremer, Fred Davis, Dave Palmer, Mark Murray, Gene Prosnitz, David Putnam, Mike Nangle, Tom Johnston, Rich Campbell, Brad Wilson, Jack McHugh, Craig White, Tom Swider; (UK) Iain Bowen, Shawn Derrick, DEenis Jones, Dane Moslen, Matt McVeigh, Jan Niechwiadowicz, Ken Simpson, Steve Thomas, Peter Sullivan; (AUSTRAILIA) John Cain, Andrew England, Mike Gibson, Steven Bagshaw; (CANADA) Francois Cuerrier, Cal White, Randy Grigsby, Mike Agnew, Doug Acheson; (AUSTRIA) Erik Adenstadt.
