Diplomacy Zine -- EP #162 Chapter Five From: Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com Date: Fri, 04 May 1990 03:23:22 +0000 Issue #162 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL: ********************************************************************** The slug smashed his right eye, off by an inch, and I knew he'd shaken me. I dropped back and tried to cool off. No noises. Still no sign that he wasn't alone. He said, "Why did you do that?" Mild curiosity colored his high-pitched voice. He didn't move as I stood up, and there was no hole in either eye. "Why did I do what?" I asked cleverly. "Why did you make holes in me? My gratitude for the gift of metal, of course, but--" He stopped suddenly, like he'd said too much and knew it. *********************************************************************** Chapter One contains: BLITZKRIEG, OPERATION OVERLORD, GETTYSBURG, and HMS HOOD And is published by daybell@aludra.usc.edu/Donald Daybell Chapter Two contains: DRAGONSLAYER, BISMARK, COLD WAR, JACAL, MANHATTAN, VERSAILLES, and DRESDEN And is published by tedward@cs.cornell.edu/Ted Fischer Chapter Three contains: MULHOUSE, DAWN PATROL, SNIKKEL-2, BERLIN, SNIKKEL-1, EL ALAMEIN, SQUALANE, UNGAWE, CAPTAIN CAVEMAN And is published by cwekx@htikub5.bitnet/Constantijn Wekx Chapter Four contains: FIRE WHEN READY, DREADNOUGHT, HOHENZOLLERN, HUGO, JUGGERNAUGHT And is published by lord_zar@ucrmath.ucr.edu/Wayne Wallace ------------- Chapter Five ------------- Spring '06 of the game BUSHIDO (BNC number 1989IN) (GM is jall@diku.dk/Mogens Jallberg) Hi Everybody. Freja (our achor-machine) has come back up. I hope the mail connections are working probably to all of you, and even if there still should be problems with the mail connection to Bart, he has given me a lot of alternatives, and at least one of them is bound to work. When I logged in there was about 50 letters, and I have not had the time to read through them all yet. I will mail the involved persons as soon as I work my way through the pile. The English navy has done a fantastic job at controlling the North Sea. The Kaiser hopes that the Italians were truly sincere in their last comment to aid us in our glorious return to Germany. To our Russian cousins, the French never learn do they? Napoleon in 1814, and again now...Its still a race to see who lasts longer you, me or Turkey.... France -> World: Oh boy, I'm in trouble. If I could lay my hands on the previous leader of France... Turkey -> Italy Obviously you mistake myself and the people of the Turkish empire as people who will bow away from your threats. Think again, we will be fighting you tooth and nail even once our last organized army is gone. We do not plea for help from the French, we are cheering them on against your attempt to take over the world, and offer any support we can to assist them in doing so. Italy -> Russia: I'm making plans to take Sevastopol shortly. This is simply to wipe the Turkish scourge off the board. Sev will be eventually returned to you, its rightful master. Here's to beating back the French invasion! I didn't support you into Warsaw this turn in hopes to avoid favorable French positioning for the Fall. If needed, however, that support will be given in the fall. I'll assume that Ukraine is going to Warsaw unless your Spring press says otherwise. Italy -> England: Nice convoy last fall. Any assistance you feel you can contribute to the downfall of France will be appreciated. Russia -> Italy: If our move to retake Warsaw is unsuccessful, may we count on your support for the same move in the Fall? Russia -> England, Germany: Never fear, we shall return to Scandanavia. If either of you want to borrow it while we are gone, feel free to do so. Please don't let France in if you do, though. He was found in his Imperial Bedchamber, surrounded by weeping houris and a pool of blood which, upon examination, turned out to be his own (type B positive). Attached to a dagger found between the third and fourth Royal Ribs was a note: "In the Name of Allah, This Fate will meet All Who Consort with the Heathens of France and Germany, and Russia and Italy and Austria-Hungary and England. Signed, Ali Gorey, President, IJECBAOSLF." A man named Ali Gorey (no relation) is being held on suspicion of Vizicide. New York - Following the arrival of an Austrian opera group, the new Broadway musical "Piper on the Roof" opened to critical acclaim and a sudden increase in earplug sales in New York City as well as in neighbouring New Jersey and Connecticut. London - In Parliament today, the Prime Minister declared that "German Awareness Week" starts today. Everyone in England is to be aware of what a German looks like, how it sounds, and what one should do when encountered by a German. "We are reluctant to implement these harsh measures," the Prime Minister stated in his address to the House of Commons, "but there have been altogether too many instances of rogue Germans infiltrating our pubs and football arenas. This can not be tolerated." Belgrade - Spectators of all ages were delighted by the novelty act which opened today at the Belgrade Fair Grounds. Calling themselves "Montenegro's Flying Circus," these six rather rotund men amused the audience for several hours with their strange Montenegrin accents and their repeated failed attempts at levitation. The troupe were completely unfazed by the utter failure of all their stunts and have been signed up for appearances at seventeen other venues in the Balkans this fall. London (AP): ``"It was a diplomatic coup!" exclaimed the Foreign Minister following news that relations had been fully restored with the Kaiser and an alliance had been successfully struck against the Czar. "We look forward to a long, fruitful relationship with the German Empire and believe that we can leave this recent anti-German hostility behind us." Berlin, April 26th: In a emotinal outburst the new Kaiser denies that his interest have anything to do with that he has a Swedish mother. "I clearly can't accept that the imperialistic Englishmen rules in a traditionally Germanic country as Sweden. It naturally belongs to the pan-German Empire!" New York Times, May 5th: "The recent defeat of the German Wermacht outside Warsaw seem to have been too much for the German generals. And with the problems they have at home makes it probable that the soldiers returning home will be used to put an end to the civil unrest in the country. According to some sources there might be a possibilty that Germany will send Austria help to fight of the Turks in the southern Balcans." ------------ GM Notes ------------ I've been informed by Roderick that he'll be losing computer access shortly, so he'll have to resign his position. A replacement player has already been appointed, but Roderick plans to continue for at least one more turn, and possibly two (Roderick, please let me know exactly when you're going to turn the position over to Jordan). In any event, the new English player will be Jordan Lampe/jordan@bosco.berkeley.edu ------------ Deadline ------------ Retreats for Summer '04 will be due Thursday midnight EDT, with the Fall '04 deadline to follow Monday night, May 7. If there's a problem with either deadline, please let me know as soon as possible. I'm going to try to get this game back to Sunday night deadlines beginning next year, if that's okay with the rest of you. Fall 1916 of the game COMRADES IN ARMS (MNC number 1990Ird24) (GM is att!druwa!hardlj or hardlj@druwa.att.com/Larry Hardouin) Matt wrote to say he did not receive the Fall results. I'm resending these to everyone. Greetings to one and all. Winter 1916 moves are due on Wednesday 5/9. Larry REMINDERS: At the end of the Winter turn, any unit that can not trace a supply line to its capital will be eliminated. Read rule 9 for more details. Alliances must be bilateral to take effect, and a country can automatically trace a supply path through the provinces of its allies. The other part of the Winter turn is, of course, to spend $$ on maintaining/building units and on PF. Remember, Fleets cost 4 SPs to build and armies cost 3. President Demon startled everyone today by relieving himself in public. In other news, President Demon declared war on Italy: "It is apparent that Italy is bent on hostility towards all who would be her friend. In order to protect our territory and the honor of our women, France is now in a state of War with Italy." Apparently the Italians are harboring Mrs. Demon in an Alpine hideaway. President Demon refused to comment on whether this had any bearing on his decision to declare war on the Italians. PARIS (MOI) President still ill! President Demon is still seriously ill. Reliable sources report that the French minister in Berlin has found a cure for Demon's illness and has requested that French forces have be sent to Berlin immediately. The Berlin ambassador also overheard the Austrian minister talking to the germans about splitting the bear. Whatever could they mean?? Toledo (Votre) The French "Fleet of Vengance" (previously the Fleet of Hope, previoulsy the French Atlantic Fleet) put to sea today. Sailors were excited at the prospect of seeing Rome. Admiral Qu'est que C'est was very happy to leave Spain. "The food here sucks, I can't wait to get my hands on a pizza!" TUNIS - After quelling a nomadic uprising and restoring peace to the desert, the brave itallian peace-keepers will venture to Greece for a short vacation. The word is that the Austrians have grown tired of sunning themselves and will be sailing east in search of Aladin's lamp. ROME - Word of the presence of the French navy on the south coast of Spain and the reacent activity in the Marseilles shipyard have prompted the PKF commander to want to take a first hand look at the situation. The commander sails from Naples to try to resotre order to the mediterranean. He was heard remarking that the news from Paris of Demon's illness was nothing more than a ploy to impose french cooking on the Spanish and the Belgians. Brussels (Ons) The French army failed to move an inch in a recent attemp at manuevers. The general in charge reported "well, instead of mailing 2543 orders to the individual units, we sent out 2543 copies of "Debbie Does Duex" by mistake. We are in control of the situation, however, and expect to be on the move in five to six weeks..." Ille Egal (Ton) The French home defense fleet put to sail today for the first time in 20 years. Rumors have it that they were selected to retrieve the errant video tapes from Belgium. The fleet is making record time and expects to be in Belgium any minute now. Summer Press ------------ Constantinople (AP) The Sultan Attaturk is in shock this week after a scurrilous air raid on his palace. Early Tuesday morning, during the Sultan's annual "Magic Mushroom" garden party, Austrian Zeppelins appeared and sent all manner of bombs and incendiaries screaming into the garden. The palace collapsed into chaos as the Sultan was rushed to safety: three eunichs and several bins of magic mushrooms were destroyed. Bursa (UPI) A mysterious explosion vaporized the Austrian embassy in Turkey late Wednesday afternoon. It is not known whether the Austrian ambassador was inside at the time of the disaster, but no other embassy personnel survived to comment. The Turkish Civil Plant Minister explained that the explosion was probably caused by a gas leak. He maintained that a formal letter of apology had been sent to the Austrian government and that the embassy groundskeeper was given a severe reprimand. Spring '01 of the game DEADLY DAGGERS (BNC number not known) (GM is demon@eve.wright.edu/Brett Kottman) Due May 6th. Publisher comments: Quote from p. 62 of Convergent Series by Larry Niven I really, really, really, really need some more guest publishers and scribes. (One for each really would be nice.) I received the following two messages from jog@hpperf1.hp.com/Rajeev Jog that demonstrate how strategy articles can be useful: Message one: I just received the latest issue of Protocol... Also, the article at the end talks about an Austria-Russia gamelong alliance; that's just what I (as Russia) did with Doug Quarnstrom in Petain (in EP) which just concluded with a 1906 two-way draw...this is probably one of the quickest games in EP (do you know what the fastest ever is???). ((Yes, it was a record by one season.)) Message two: I was re-reading the article on the Russia-Austria alliance in the last issue, and comparing the scenario therein with the one Doug Quarnstrom and I faced in Petain, which was similar, perhaps even better. Some comments based off the article: 1) Turkey was convinced to leave the Black Sea open, and I (Russia) took it right away, in Spring 1901, with a strong feint into Galicia and Ukraine, along with anti-Austrian press. Germany was in on it, as we were originally looking for a three-way alliance, which fell apart when the German player was replaced. Doug must have nerves of steel to have gone along with the Galicia/Ukraine attack. Germany convinced Italy that his opening to Tyrolia was anti-Austrian, and was also drawn into moving against Turkey. Consequently, Turkey was gone by winter 1903. 2) Germany and France attacked England, and initially I was inclined to let England survive, but the absolute lack of serious proposals from England led me to join in the party, giving me Scandinavia even before Germany and France had any gains to show, and with all the fleets I kept building in StP(nc), I was in Edi as France reached Liv. 3) Italy was not persuaded to attack France; however, Germany and Austria made short work of Italy, taking Venice in 1901, as Italy waited in vain for Russian help which was conveniently delayed until the demise of Turkey. The piece de resistance was of course Germany's luring of the French army in Spain back to Mar, after agreeing to a bounce in Mar, as that denied France the build in Spain, and eliminated the prospect of building F Mar; this gave Austria and I unchallenged command of the Mediterranean. It is weird organizing this zine, keep that mail coming! Eric Klien m. Up
