Press: TURKS STEAM INTO GREEK ISLANDS, EMPORER SHOWS RESTRAINT Vienna, 20 December 1901 -- Christmas preparations may have to wait for the people of the Greek islands as an apparantly hostile Turkish fleet has been spotted heading for the new member of the Holy Roman Empire. Greece, newly brought into the Habsburg fold from a state of near anarchy, has formally asked Marshall of the Empire John I (who still refuses to take the crown of the recently-deceased Emporer) to support it if war with the Turkish forces should prove necessary. The Marshall responded that he would treat the Greek lands and people as if they were his very own. The Marshall's G-2 (Chief Intelligence Officer), I. Gottasecret, revealed to the Austrian press this morning that the Marshall has in the past received threatening correspondence from the Turkish Sultan. The Marshall responded to the earlier threats with a degree of calm uncommon to leaders in this day and age, according to Gottasecret. Yet the Marshall said this afternoon while inspecting one of his newly formed units that he would keep the forces of the Empire ready for the Turkish threat: "We shall not fight unless there proves to be no recourse. If war should prove necessary to protect the Empire, however, you can be sure that we will fight to win. In war, there is no 'second place'." The connection to Mark works well. Without the Greeks, we wouldn't have history. The Greeks invented three kinds of columns- Corinthian, Doric, and Ironic. They also had myths. A myth is a female moth. One myth says that the mother of Achilles dipped him in the River Stynx until he became intolerable. Achilles appears in "The Illiad", by Homer. Homer also wrote the "Oddity", in which Penelope was the last hardship that Ulysses endured on his journey. Actually, Homer was not written by Homer but by another man of that name. Socrates was a famous Greek teacher who went around giving people advice. They killed him. Socrates died from an overdose of wedlock. England ------- London-- The British Prime Minister, upon receiving the diplomatic package from the president of France, went to the King of England. "Whot's this? What the bloody hell is a 'DMZ' and how will it prevent misunderstandings?" and the King replied, "I don't know what they bloody well mean either, think we should send the navy to investigate the channel and find out what they are talking about?" But the Prime Minister replied, "I don't know about these bloody French men, they might get insulted or something, they get insulted if you look at them cross-eyed. Anyway, isn't the navy going to be busy in the North Sea? " England -> Russia: An offer? How about you can have the East and I'll have the west? (Or is that the rest?) France ------ TOUT LE TEMPS Paris--Cries from the Iberian peninsula for protection apparently reached the proper ears. M. le President issued a statement on national radio earlier today stating that "France will not ignore her neighbors to the west." Plans are under construction to post military forces in both Spain and Portugal to insure the continuing sovereignty of the two nations. With a heavy sigh, M. le President added, "Similar agreements have been reached with Belgium, who desires to remain associated with her mother land." Le President appeared very concerned about the military action deemed necessary by escalating build-up elsewhere. France -> Germany: Since you expressed interest in Denmark and Holland, I propose taking Belgium...This is in no way to be taken as aggression against the Kaiser. Germany ------- none. Italy ----- none. Russia ------ Russia->World: Well, you know me, words are cheap and I can't resist a bargain! Russia->Turkey: As you can see, I respected your wishes and stayed out of the Black Sea this turn. I presume that you will have done the same. We do need to discuss that fleet that I have on your Northern side. Care to propose a plan? Russia->Italy: Terribly excited about having a silent neighbor with a unit right next to one of your home supply centers? Russia->Austria: Nice opening press. Suitably ambiguous but just ominous enough to worry your neighbors. Russia->France, Germany, England: Well, I didn't want you to feel left out. Turkey ------ Turkey->Russia: Based on the winter 00 news, I was not sure if you would honor a Black Sea DMZ. So I have made my 01 spring moves accordingly. Your comments to Austria ruffled my Turkish feathers. Turkey->Austria: How does Russia sound to you? Turkey->England: I hear the fishing is quite nice in Scandinavia. Turkey->Mongolia: Rumor has it that a Russian attack is imminent. Turkey->All: Anybody ready to call for a truce yet? Turkey->Russia: (Seriously this time) My opening move is a direct result of your "Does Turkey sound interesting to you?" comment to Austria. I didn't know Thanksgiving was so close at hand. Anyway, fearing the worse, I decided to move so that I can at least deal from a position of strength. Austria and I couldn't butt heads this turn anyway. A Russian-Turkish alliance is still a possibility, but an Austrian-Turkish alliance is also possible. Austria and I could spoil your dinner. However, Russia and Turkey are better suited to be allies. Guess it depends on who you want to smile on! Turkey->Austria: Please read all of the above. A Turkish-Austrian alliance is possible - difficult because of terrain - but possible. I'm willing to give it a shot. Later turns will determine how things will go, but for now I extend an olive branch. Who would you rather work with, Russia or your friendly neighbor in the southeast? England to Turkey: I'm trying the fishing off the Norwegian coast, get back to you on how good it is. France ------ France -> Germany: I'd like to get your opinion about the press from England to Russia last Spring. Sounds like France and Germany are the "west" that England is proposing to take. That kind of rubbed my the wrong way...any comments? France -> England: For not wanting to write any press, your first installment raised my eyebrows (see press to Germany). I'd like a clarification, s'il vous plait... France -> Russia: Intersting situation shaping up your way. BTW, I enjoy all your words...cheap or not. In reference to England's press to you, maybe you should take the east of *England*, and France can take the west. TOUT LE TEMPS Paris--In a nationwide announcement today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, M. Jacques B. Nimble, spoke of the establishment of a military academy especially to cater to the needs of the British. "It's blatantly obvious," said M. Nimble "that English strategists need to improve their vocabulary to say nothing of their spelling." The academy will charge outrageous fees for the service, but the desperate Brits are expected to flock to the school in droves. Germany ------- Munich-Paris: We have observed French troops near the border of our country. We hope that they will not threaten the former French but now fully assimilated citizens we gave our culture after the war 1870. Berlin-Bruxelles: We understand your anxiety for a war. However, we can do nothing to help you. The reason is that your diplomats had troubles with the language. Berlin-London-Paris: Perhaps you where more successful in your diplomatic negotiations about the Belgian problem. We hope that you have agreed of a solution. Berlin-Haag: Our protective army is on it's way and will reach Rotterdam in August. Berlin-London: Our observers have reported that the naval crew in North Sea feel restless and unnecessary due to the Russian demilitarization, and that they over and over read old commercials about vacations on the French riviera. Berlin-Moscow: We are happy that we had such a diplomatic success in the discussion of a demilitarization of the land between our countries, that you are fully satisfied with the beautiful country of Finland. Italy ----- Italy -> Austria: Let's see if I can sneak into Trieste... Italy -> France: What about a DMZ between us (Pie, Lyo, Wes)? Italy -> Russia: Are you interested in cooperation? Italy -> Turkey: Are you interested in cooperation? Russia ------ Russia->Turkey: Well, I see two options for our diplomatic relations. You could ally with me, or I can kill you. Personally, I'd prefer the earlier since it will take much less time. As you can see from my moves last turn and this turn I have taken no hostile actions against you. I'll presume that you've retreated your units out of the Black Sea area by now. If you haven't I'm not going to be happy. Russia->Austria: Well, as the saying goes, ya gotta fight SOMEBODY. Russia->Italy: I think we can do some fine things in Austria, c'est ne pas? Russia->Germany, France, England: Well, I'd say things are looking grim for Germany right now. The classy set of moves would be England NwS Convoys Edinburgh - Norway Nrth Sea - Holland France Burgundy - Munich which could end up with Germany being held to one net supply center gain and an unpleasant French army in his home turf. A best case response gives him two supply centers but France and England each get two as well. Interesting. Turkey ------ Turkey -> Russia: I was as surprised as you were at the spring 01 results. I fully expected you to enter the Black Sea. Sigh. Maybe press in a gunboat game is not a good thing after all. I surely didn't intend for it to have this effect. Sorry to have misled you with the winter 00 DMZ proposal. The proposal was sincere - not a deliberate trick. Anyway, given the mess that we are in, we can get into a knock-down, drag-out fight or try to make peace. I can't tell what Austria has in mind since their media has been silent. She is no doubt pleased as to what you and I are up to. She seems to be cautiously guarding her borders. No one seems to know who their allies will be. So why should we bother fighting each other? Unfortunately, given my opening, it appears that I will be fighting my best potential ally. I want to make peace, but for this turn I decided to take Sevastopol and ensure a second build this year. This is only temporary - I want to give it back soon with only one request - that you build no fleets there. That's a pretty simple request and one that you could easily decide to ignore whenever you feel like it. Of course, I'd prefer to see you honor the request. I know I'm aggravating you. Consider this a temporary nuisance. I don't have my sights on Moscow. I wanted to enter this game with an alliance between the two of us. It is still early in the game and there is plenty of time to work this out. All of this misfortune stems from my misinterpretation of the 00 press. We can still undo the damage. And even though this mess resulted from the press, at least you and I are using this medium to get an idea of what's going on in each other's head. (Of course, everyone gets to see what we're thinking too, but then again, they shouldn't be reading this. Shame on you people! Forget everything that you've read!) Anyway, please have some tolerance. If I've really upset you, I guess we could be in for a long war. It depends on how you handle it. I hope that you are not frowning. Turkey->Austria: I hope that you will turn out some press, even if it is disinformation. Russia and I are tense, my fault, but the situation is not irreparable. As mentioned in earlier press, I'd like to see us cooperate. I have left Greece alone as a sign of my friendship. Future turns will show me what your intentions are. If you force me to interpret your moves without press, I hope that I won't misunderstand your intentions. Turkey->Italy: Thanks for quelching the Tunisian/Libyan threat. I never have liked those terrorists. Turkey->England: Caught any fish yet? Turkey->Germany: Are you in NATO or the Warsaw Pact or both? I wish someone would make up their mind! Turkey->France: Hi. How's it going in your corner of the world? ANONYMOUS: ---------- Dateline June 15 1901. Well the opening months of the Spring campaign look interesting. We have seen standard opening moves played by England and Italy. France is also close to standard, looking to pickup the Iberian peninsula plus Belgium, but not very trusting of Germany. Turkey has opened with an extremely aggressive stance vs Russia. Austria-Hungary seems to have gone south this spring, leaving their northern border open, and the Russians have moved south in force, perhaps eyeing the northern reaches of Austria-Hungary? Winter '01 of the gunboat game MASADA (MNC number not known) (GM is att!druwa!hardlj or hardlj@druwa.att.com/Larry Hardouin) (is being moved to chapter five) Wed Jun 13 07:47:52 MDT 1990 Spring 1902 is due on Monday the 18th. As always, let me know if I've made any mistakes. Now for the question of the day: >Can we have separate seasons (with no press) for retreats? >I hate conditional retreats. I'd much rather stick to 3 turns per season. Having 5 turns per season will make the game drag out much longer. If a particular situation arises where the retreats are quite complicated, I'll allow for a separate season without press (ie. just for the retreats). Italy: Looks like I'll have to deal with you... England ------- England to France: I hope that my actions spoke louder than words. I didn't move into the English channel, and I did support you. Does that allay fears? England to Germany: Just because I helped France, does not mean that I am out to get you. England to Turkey: The fishing off Norway seems to be pretty good. France ------ France -> England: Thanks for the support into Belgium. I must say that it was unexpected...you've got me pretty confused! Not unusual, I guess. Anyway, I apologize for my misinterpretation. BTW, I built a fleet in Brest, but not with the intention of taking the Channel or threatening England. I'd still like the Channel to remain a Demilitarized Zone! Your thoughts? France -> Germany: Your press leads me to believe that you're headed my way in a big hurry. Hopefully, my good intentions were exemplified by my *not* moving on Munich, when I had the perfect opportunity. France -> Italy: I believe a non-aggression pact between our two countries is in our collective best interests. Consider it done. Bonne chance in the east. France -> Russia: Are you sure you're in a position to threaten anyone?! France -> Turkey: I felt the need to respond to your extensive press of last fall. I've never seen such blathering in my life. The fact that you stabbed Russia after *you* proposed the DMZ is a bit slimey, but part of the game. Your attempts to molify the Czar with slobbering verbosity is far and away the worst part of the entire situation. This heart-rendering outpouring will undoubtedly be followed by continued stabs against Russia anyway....Yuck! Germany ------- The Foreign Minister says that we are glad to see that peace still rules the world. We admire you down there in the corner, your exquisite way of making ordinary military training exciting. You really know how to amuse yourself. Cut from Munich Daily Inquire: "The general public opinion was disappointment. Everybody was excited and expected much from the tourists on their journey. Officially, everyone in Bayern know: 'They think that they are too good for lederhhosen.' So who knows, what will this lead to?" We still hear from the naval crew in the North Sea that they will move. Perhaps Belgium will suit them when the beer is finished and they aren't allowed to move back to old England? After a short glance on Sweden, the navy has decided that they want to try fishing too. Is the norwegian army willing to help us to be with this apparently addictive hobby? Italy ----- Italy -> World: At the request of her citizens Italian forces have moved into Trieste to protect them from the Austrian army. Italy -> France: What about that DMZ? By the way, don't build fleets in Marseilles, OK? Italy -> Russia: Any suggestions for next spring? Italy -> Turkey: Check your calendar. It is 1901. NATO or the Warsaw Pact doesn't exist yet. Russia ------ Russia->Turkey: Smiling? You want me to be smiling? Give me something to smile about. I'm still willing to alliance with you, but you're going to have to give me clear indication that you're willing to ally on my part. Russia->Austria: Well, a lack of press in the first turn might be prudent, but a lack of press in the second round... Russia->Italy: Good call on Vienna. The convoy to Tunis was, well, interesting. Not what I would have done, but it does have its possibilities. (Personally, I would have risked no builds this turn just to keep A-H out of Greece, but I'd say we've got him in a tight spot anyway. Support me into Budapest and I'll help you into Serbia. Also, since Germany seems to be totally untrustworthy, I'd like to ask your assistance in advance for the contingency of his moving East. If he heads my way, please do what you can. Russia->Germany: Bad plan. Russia->England: Well, Germany looks to be trying to stir you and France against each other (and reading the press, I'd say that it's working). Try and preserve that alliance. Germany is too strong to be trifled with at the moment. Might I make a modest proposal and suggest moving NwS - Nor and Nor - Ska? This will help you gain Denmark which has been traditionally British. Also, I would appreciate your supporting me into Sweden this Spring. I make a damned good ally. Russia->France: Think really hard before listening to Germany about England. England has actively helped you (at the cost of his growth, I might add). Germany has done nothing for you other than refrain from starting immediate hostilities. Russia->Turkey (again): Did you know that I've NEVER seen anyone move to Syria in any Diplomacy game I've played? Russia->World: Goddamn, this game is FLYING. Anybody ever do a play by e-mail dip game that moved so fast? Turkey ------ Turkey -> All: Whew! Time to catch our breath after a busy first turn. I'm glad we get this extra season. The Turkish turtle stuck his head out in 1901. The coming year will see the turtle go back in his shell. The fleet building exercise is an attempt to guard my western and southern shores. Time to play defense while this mess gets sorted out. Turkey -> Russia: Based on last season's press, I guess you are not happy with me. I was a little surprised at my options - to ally or be killed. As stated before, I prefer to ally. You will note that I did not build armies- which are necessary to carry out a campaign in Russia. This would be a good turn to give Sevastopol back. Of course, settlement of our problem is up to you. If the country with a smile becomes intent on destroying its southern neighbor, it may get bogged down in a useless war while more severe trouble erupts elsewhere. Germany is, no doubt, displeased with your fall 1901 press, and England may turn their fishing expedition into operation Nordic Hammer. You may find it desirable to forgive my transgressions. Lord knows I don't want to be killed - especially not by someone who will have a blood-thirsty smile during every enjoyable moment of the heinous act. Turkey -> Austria: I'm glad to know that I have at least one friend in this world. Based on Russia's Vienna move and your fall 01 press, I assume that you want to ally with me. By the way, thanks for the press. I had been a little concerned about the lack of press and stated such. Hope my comments didn't upset you. Given our situation - my Russian entanglement and your uninvited visitors - I think it is best that we cooperate. Let me hold off the Russians in Moscow and Rumania while you head west in an effort to regain your home centers. If you can predict a turn in advance where you might need support, let me know by press. I may miss it otherwise. I will leave your centers alone and I hope that you will return the favor. Turkey -> Italy: I would like to cooperate (Russia would like to also). You and Russia appear to be better suited for cooperation at the moment. This is turning out to be a strange game. I expected you to ally with Austria and I with Russia. Both are still possible. Russia and I may be able to patch things up, and you could make Austria very happy by withdrawing. I would like to cooperate with you, but I'm not going to participate in the destruction of Austria. Our best area of cooperation is in the Mediterranean. I would prefer to see you not leave the Ionian enroute for my fair shores. I built fleets for defensive purposes, and I'd hate to see a Lepanto convoy into Syria. I think we can best cooperate by leaving each other alone. Russia, based on his desires for revenge, will propose a Russo-Italiano effort against Austria and me, but remember, Austria and I can sit back in this corner of the board and drag such an effort out. You and Russia have neighbors behind you. This kind of trouble is unnecessary. It is my sincere hope that there will be good tidings between our two countries, and that you won't get into wars that others would have you fight for them. Turkey -> England: You caught a fish! And it's a long one! Turkey -> Germany: Boy things sure are looking grim. Turkey -> France: You've cornered the Iberian markets. Belgium is at your mercy. You've gotten three builds. What are you going to do next? "I'm going to Disney World!" Oops. Wrong continent. Turkey -> All: The turtle retreats into his shell. Who will be his enemies? Not even the turtle knows! Stay tuned... PRESS: [Marseilles] - Having discovered that there are no french in Marseilles, the Italian National Honor Guard are continuing their quest for good food in Spain. Rumor had it that the Spanish were living in horrible conditions due to French management. [Tunis] - The Italian saliors stationed here reported that the French forces in North Africa have vanished "like an unwelcome mirage". Having successfully held out against the French menace, the Italians are setting sail for the Greek Isles. Bob Givan GM - Fire When Ready rlg@ai.mit.edu P.S.
