Remember to include conditional retreats. There will be a separate Winter turn, so you do not have to send builds/disbands. Black Press: The vote on black press was 1 vote FOR, 5 AGAINST, and 1 player forgot to vote. There will not be black press. There will be grey press, however. Grey press is anonymous press. Thus, you can not write press and have it published under another country's name, but you can write press which no one knows where it came from. England ------- London-- The British Prime Minister, upon receiving the diplomatic package from the president of France, went to the King of England. "Whot's this? What the bloody hell is a 'DMZ' and how will it prevent misunderstandings?" and the King replied, "I don't know what they bloody well mean either, think we should send the navy to investigate the channel and find out what they are talking about?" But the Prime Minister replied, "I don't know about these bloody French men, they might get insulted or something, they get insulted if you look at them cross-eyed. Anyway, isn't the navy going to be busy in the North Sea? " England -> Russia: An offer? How about you can have the East and I'll have the west? (Or is that the rest?) France ------ TOUT LE TEMPS Paris--Cries from the Iberian peninsula for protection apparently reached the proper ears. M. le President issued a statement on national radio earlier today stating that "France will not ignore her neighbors to the west." Plans are under construction to post military forces in both Spain and Portugal to insure the continuing sovereignty of the two nations. With a heavy sigh, M. le President added, "Similar agreements have been reached with Belgium, who desires to remain associated with her mother land." Le President appeared very concerned about the military action deemed necessary by escalating build-up elsewhere. France -> Germany: Since you expressed interest in Denmark and Holland, I propose taking Belgium...This is in no way to be taken as aggression against the Kaiser. Germany ------- none. Italy ----- none. Russia ------ Russia->World: Well, you know me, words are cheap and I can't resist a bargain! Russia->Turkey: As you can see, I respected your wishes and stayed out of the Black Sea this turn. I presume that you will have done the same. We do need to discuss that fleet that I have on your Northern side. Care to propose a plan? Russia->Italy: Terribly excited about having a silent neighbor with a unit right next to one of your home supply centers? Russia->Austria: Nice opening press. Suitably ambiguous but just ominous enough to worry your neighbors. Russia->France, Germany, England: Well, I didn't want you to feel left out. Turkey ------ Turkey->Russia: Based on the winter 00 news, I was not sure if you would honor a Black Sea DMZ. So I have made my 01 spring moves accordingly. Your comments to Austria ruffled my Turkish feathers. Turkey->Austria: How does Russia sound to you? Turkey->England: I hear the fishing is quite nice in Scandinavia. Turkey->Mongolia: Rumor has it that a Russian attack is imminent. Turkey->All: Anybody ready to call for a truce yet? Turkey->Russia: (Seriously this time) My opening move is a direct result of your "Does Turkey sound interesting to you?" comment to Austria. I didn't know Thanksgiving was so close at hand. Anyway, fearing the worse, I decided to move so that I can at least deal from a position of strength. Austria and I couldn't butt heads this turn anyway. A Russian-Turkish alliance is still a possibility, but an Austrian-Turkish alliance is also possible. Austria and I could spoil your dinner. However, Russia and Turkey are better suited to be allies. Guess it depends on who you want to smile on! Turkey->Austria: Please read all of the above. A Turkish-Austrian alliance is possible - difficult because of terrain - but possible. I'm willing to give it a shot. Later turns will determine how things will go, but for now I extend an olive branch. Who would you rather work with, Russia or your friendly neighbor in the southeast? England ------- England to France: I would prefer that you not build a fleet in Brest. I supported you into Belgium to make sure you would get it. How does Germany look to you? England to Turkey: I'm trying the fishing off the Norwegian coast, get back to you on how good it is. France ------ France -> Germany: I'd like to get your opinion about the press from England to Russia last Spring. Sounds like France and Germany are the "west" that England is proposing to take. That kind of rubbed my the wrong way...any comments? France -> England: For not wanting to write any press, your first installment raised my eyebrows (see press to Germany). I'd like a clarification, s'il vous plait... France -> Russia: Intersting situation shaping up your way. BTW, I enjoy all your words...cheap or not. In reference to England's press to you, maybe you should take the east of *England*, and France can take the west. TOUT LE TEMPS Paris--In a nationwide announcement today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, M. Jacques B. Nimble, spoke of the establishment of a military academy especially to cater to the needs of the British. "It's blatantly obvious," said M. Nimble "that English strategists need to improve their vocabulary to say nothing of their spelling." The academy will charge outrageous fees for the service, but the desperate Brits are expected to flock to the school in droves. Germany ------- Munich-Paris: We have observed French troops near the border of our country. We hope that they will not threaten the former French but now fully assimilated citizens we gave our culture after the war 1870. Berlin-Bruxelles: We understand your anxiety for a war. However, we can do nothing to help you. The reason is that your diplomats had troubles with the language. Berlin-London-Paris: Perhaps you where more successful in your diplomatic negotiations about the Belgian problem. We hope that you have agreed of a solution. Berlin-Haag: Our protective army is on it's way and will reach Rotterdam in August. Berlin-London: Our observers have reported that the naval crew in North Sea feel restless and unnecessary due to the Russian demilitarization, and that they over and over read old commercials about vacations on the French riviera. Berlin-Moscow: We are happy that we had such a diplomatic success in the discussion of a demilitarization of the land between our countries, that you are fully satisfied with the beautiful country of Finland. Italy ----- Italy -> Austria: Let's see if I can sneak into Trieste... Italy -> France: What about a DMZ between us (Pie, Lyo, Wes)? Italy -> Russia: Are you interested in cooperation? Italy -> Turkey: Are you interested in cooperation? Russia ------ Russia->Turkey: Well, I see two options for our diplomatic relations. You could ally with me, or I can kill you. Personally, I'd prefer the earlier since it will take much less time. As you can see from my moves last turn and this turn I have taken no hostile actions against you. I'll presume that you've retreated your units out of the Black Sea area by now. If you haven't I'm not going to be happy. Russia->Austria: Well, as the saying goes, ya gotta fight SOMEBODY. Russia->Italy: I think we can do some fine things in Austria, c'est ne pas? Russia->Germany, France, England: Well, I'd say things are looking grim for Germany right now. The classy set of moves would be England NwS Convoys Edinburgh - Norway Nrth Sea - Holland France Burgundy - Munich which could end up with Germany being held to one net supply center gain and an unpleasant French army in his home turf. A best case response gives him two supply centers but France and England each get two as well. Interesting. Turkey ------ Turkey -> Russia: I was as surprised as you were at the spring 01 results. I fully expected you to enter the Black Sea. Sigh. Maybe press in a gunboat game is not a good thing after all. I surely didn't intend for it to have this effect. Sorry to have misled you with the winter 00 DMZ proposal. The proposal was sincere - not a deliberate trick. Anyway, given the mess that we are in, we can get into a knock-down, drag-out fight or try to make peace. I can't tell what Austria has in mind since their media has been silent. She is no doubt pleased as to what you and I are up to. She seems to be cautiously guarding her borders. No one seems to know who their allies will be. So why should we bother fighting each other? Unfortunately, given my opening, it appears that I will be fighting my best potential ally. I want to make peace, but for this turn I decided to take Sevastopol and ensure a second build this year. This is only temporary - I want to give it back soon with only one request - that you build no fleets there. That's a pretty simple request and one that you could easily decide to ignore whenever you feel like it. Of course, I'd prefer to see you honor the request. I know I'm aggravating you. Consider this a temporary nuisance. I don't have my sights on Moscow. I wanted to enter this game with an alliance between the two of us. It is still early in the game and there is plenty of time to work this out. All of this misfortune stems from my misinterpretation of the 00 press. We can still undo the damage. And even though this mess resulted from the press, at least you and I are using this medium to get an idea of what's going on in each other's head. (Of course, everyone gets to see what we're thinking too, but then again, they shouldn't be reading this. Shame on you people! Forget everything that you've read!) Anyway, please have some tolerance. If I've really upset you, I guess we could be in for a long war. It depends on how you handle it. I hope that you are not frowning. Turkey->Austria: I hope that you will turn out some press, even if it is disinformation. Russia and I are tense, my fault, but the situation is not irreparable. As mentioned in earlier press, I'd like to see us cooperate. I have left Greece alone as a sign of my friendship. Future turns will show me what your intentions are. If you force me to interpret your moves without press, I hope that I won't misunderstand your intentions. Turkey->Italy: Thanks for quelching the Tunisian/Libyan threat. I never have liked those terrorists. Turkey->England: Caught any fish yet? Turkey->Germany: Are you in NATO or the Warsaw Pact or both? I wish someone would make up their mind! Turkey->France: Hi. How's it going in your corner of the world? ANONYMOUS: ---------- Dateline June 15 1901. Well the opening months of the Spring campaign look interesting. We have seen standard opening moves played by England and Italy. France is also close to standard, looking to pickup the Iberian peninsula plus Belgium, but not very trusting of Germany. Turkey has opened with an extremely aggressive stance vs Russia. Austria-Hungary seems to have gone south this spring, leaving their northern border open, and the Russians have moved south in force, perhaps eyeing the northern reaches of Austria-Hungary?
