"You're right", he said. "It is trite. It is shtick. It is hokey. And it has been done before." Pause. A smile spread across his face. "But we'll do it." Press: [Rome (well Naples)] - I'm not dead yet (OK yes I am). Paris (Au Pairs) In this mornings news, Presidnet Demon announced a new program for consolidating the empire. France will annex the following provinces: Catalonia Piedmont Tuscany London Tunis North Africa Belgium The following have been set up as client states, part of the larger French Empire: Spain Portugal Kingdom of Naples When asked about how the countries still under Italian control would be annexed, President Demon replied that "our esteemed Austrian allies are taking care of that." Rumors place a niece of Kaiser Joe at President Demons quarters recently. The Austrian consulate has denied the allegation, stating "Ms. Debutente is studying at her villa in Innsbruck." Marsielles (Jouer au Basket) French police have captured the errent Mrs. Demon. She will be taken to a hospital outside Bordeaux for consultation and examination. President Demon seemed relieved that Mrs. Demon was in safe hands. He told reporters "she gets a little crazy now and then, you know how women get during certain times of the month!" Several female reporters in the room objected to this, replying that women could be crazy whenever they wanted. London (A la Carte) Marshal Le Bif Teque reported that all is going well in the occupation. "The English are adapting well to French food and language. Although they don't seem to understand our use of adjectives and adverbs. I keep hearing youngsters exclaim 'but why is it a tractor green and not a green tractor?!'." Lyon (La Pitissarie) The southern command announced the final stage of the Italian campaing. "We will have the remaining forces cleared out of the Med within the year," stated Marshal Gauche. "We don't expect any more problems from them, except a feeble attempt to retake Tunis." ********* England Fights On ******************* Liverpool (AP) -- "England will never surrender, but will fight to the death to repel the French and Germans from our shores!" So declared L. Sadun, Lord Protector of England, to a crowd of dismayed citizens who had hoped for peace. He explained that Russia had refused to help in any way, and that Germany had claimed to want to help, but had only suggested moves that would have turned England and Scotland over to Germany. But the L.P.'s greatest anger was reserved for the French. "We tried to surrender to them, if only to spite the Germans, but they wouldn't accept. The moves they suggested would only have helped Germany, not France. Those frogs have no honor, and they talk funny, too. And so we fight on..." In other news, Queen Victoria has turned up, alive, in Bermuda. She only LOOKED dead after the recent assasination attempt, but in reality was only maintaining the composed look she has kept for the last 10 years. The Foreign Office has denied rumors that she has in fact BEEN dead for 10 years. **************************************** Summer '03 of the game GROUND ZERO (BNC number not known) (GM is Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com/Eric Klien F Tunis retreats to W Med Fall '03 orders due Sunday at midnight. He noted that no German forces attacked the units or invaded the territory of any Great Power, and that no Power had attacked the armies or territory of Germany. He expressed the hope that this peaceful condition could continue. "The German people are already well fed -- we have all the pastry, beer and waffles we need, and war gives me indigestion". ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | Brian Rapp | rapp@freezer.it.udel.edu | brapp@vax1.udel.edu | Ferret | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Spring '01 of the game HIROSHIMA (BNC number not known) (GM is okamoto@hp-ses.hp.com/Jeff Okamoto) Not due yet. Excerpts from his speech follow: "It is time for the Italian people to pursue a policy of peace and friendship with their neighbors... ...this policy would have been difficult at best under the old leadership. ... I sincerely hope that His Majesty will be more capable than the past leadership." In an apparently unrelated development, major military concentrations of the HM provided particular reassurances to his dear friends in Austro-Hungarian Empire. ------------ Deadline ------------ The deadline for Fall 1901 will be Friday, July 6 at midnight EDT. In the Runestone GM Poll we did pretty good with Robert Cochan getting 14th, Eric Klien getting 20th, Bob Givan getting 22nd, and Richard Kirby getting 41st out of 48 GMs who got 5 votes or more. Note that plenty of our GMs only got 4 votes and missed out on their claim to glory. Also note that all ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL GMs, and most other GMs got between 5 and 9 votes, so only 1 vote had a big effect. For example, the first place GM's modified mean of 9.917 would have been hard to keep up with more than 6 votes. But the results of the Runestone Zine Poll were very, very disappointing. ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL was rated 42nd out of 75 zines. Considering that we have the fastest games in the world, the most games of any zine in the world, players from more countries than any other zine, have published more issues than almost every zine in history, publish articles in addition to running games, are producing 25%+ of the gamestarts in the entire hobby and even run contests, I expected to do much better! Considering that most of the zines that beat ours only publish ten issues a year, I figured our one hundred and four issues and correspondingly faster games would really impress people. But I was wrong. What is wrong with the zine? Let me know and I'll change it. I don't like working so hard at keeping this huge zine afloat, only to get trashed in the poll. Later, after I have an electronic copy of the results I'll post them, but for now here is some additional info: We recieved a modified mean of 7.59 which is approximately the average vote sent. For comparisson, the Boob Report came in 9th place with a modified mean of 7.56 and Disease City came in 40th place with a modified mean of 7.75. Hmm. It looks like everyone giving the zine tens would have less effect than I thought. The real problem is that the zine received a preference score of 2.365 compared to 9.459 for the 1st place zine. So, let me rephrase my question: "Those people who voted for more than one zine and trashed this one, please tell me what you want changed!" Are we too fast? Are we running too many games? Do we need a lottery? Let me know. By the way, only one zine received more votes than ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL, BEEN THERE, DONE THAT received 4 more votes, with 76 total votes. Last year, ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL only got 33 votes, so at least we are showing our strength in numbers. Eric Klien. Up
