New PBeM Game (Teaser) From: berdley@coral.bucknell.edu Date: Mon, 06 Aug 1990 18:12:17 +0000 If you think that you might like to play, read the following. Keep in mind that this system is HOME GROWN, it's not AD&D or ROLEMASTER or any of the other systems that you know. You'll have to learn the system as you go. ======================================================================== Hello. My name is Bill Erdley, and I am the coordinator for the game known as "Rosasol." Let me start by welcoming you to the World of Rosasol and wishing you all the luck in the world during the game. First, I'd like to explain a few things about the way I run "Play-by-E-Mail" games. Having never played an actual "send-the-letter -and-wait-40-weeks-for-the-response" game, we (the creators of "Rosasol") had to re-invent the wheel. We first spent several years playing a "solo" e-mail adventure between ourselves, in order to begin testing the system. We've also run several other party-based, e-mail game which lasted during a summer term. In each we made mistakes, corrected those mistakes, and created a stronger system than what we had when we started. This will be our fourth "party" campaign, and our second formal ("if your move isn't in my hand - you're hosed!") campaign. I just hope that it's half as much fun for you as it was for us during our last run! This type of game is more like a collective story-telling session, and less like a game of craps, than other e-mail games that we've seen and participated in. All dice rolling is handled by us - and believe me, it's as honest as possible. If anything, we fudge the rolls in favor of the players. All you, as the player, need to be concerned about is creating and running a viable, believable, and hopefully, durable character. It really is easier that way; for you AND for us. One of the things that we request from you during the character creation process is a personality profile. The reason for this is one of the best things about our style of e-mail adventuring. We can run uninterrupted combat, full bartering sessions, complete conversations, and other timely encounters using what you have told us about your characters in the profile. There is then no need for "Ok, that combat round is done - send me your next SIX SECONDS!" Thus, the game tempo is very fast and each response that you recieve can read more like a chapter in a story than the caption beneath a cartoon. I will work you in order to paint a full, brilliant picture of your character. Then, hopefully, your character will become a living, breathing resident of the world of Rosasol. Another feature of our game is that all of your moves are archived and edited into story form. At the end of the game (and if I have the free time to manage it) I will compile the entire game into story form. At that time, if you wish, I will send you a copy. Finally, at least for now, I feel I need to add an exclaimer which deals with the few "gamers" who draw their enjoyment from trying to confuse, distract, or annoy the other players. I have played opposite such players. I have been the game master of games which included such players. In those games in which I was a playing participant, I have usually withdrawn from the game. In those where I have been the Referee, that player usually withdraws - and NOT by choice! I hope there are no players like that in this group; but if there are, I have not qualms against removing that player quickly and permanantly from the game. I don't want to place ANY constraints on the game or the players. If your character would stab a fellow character, fine. I will know that. You will make it very plain to me. You will explain his/her reasoning and it will also be in keeping with your character's personality. Also, there will be NO profanity or vulgarity. None. Period. If your character needs to curse, we will create new and wonderful curses for him/her to use. I have had problem with this in the past; this way everyone is aware of this rule from the onset. Enough said. Again, welcome to OUR world. We hope that you will have as much fun here as we have had. Bill Erdley Rosijo - God of Nature and of Animals Referenced By Up
