Diplomacy zine -- Chapter One From: daybell@sal-sun8.usc.edu (Donald Daybell) Date: Fri, 27 Jul 1990 02:19:49 +0000 Issue 179 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL ----------- Chapter One ----------- This chapter contains results for the games BLITZKRIEG, GETTYSBURG, and RED STORM RISING, and Gunboat game PASSCHENDAELE Spring of 1915 of game BLITZKRIEG (BNC 1989HL) (GM is dougi@astro.as.utexas.edu/ Doug Ingram) Blitzkrieg -- Spring 1915 The government has decided that we should celebrate Washington's birthday on the third Monday of February, because that way the nation gets a long weekend, and, what the hell, Washington is dead anyway. (When I say "the nation," of course, I mean "government employees and maybe six or seven other people.") I think that if the government can mess around with the calendar for its own convenience, the rest of us should be able to do the same thing. For example, most people find April 15 to be a terribly inconvenient day to file income tax returns, coming as it does right at the beginning of baseball season. I think this year on April 15 we should all send the government little notices explaining that we observe Income Tax Day on December 11. -- Dave Barry, "Birthday Celebration" *************** Austria: A UKR S Rus A SEV-MOS, A WAR S Rus A SEV-MOS, A GAL SA WAR, A SIL SA BOH-MUN, (A BOH-MUN), A TYR SA BOH-MUN, (A VIE-BOH), F AEG SF ION, [F ION SF NAP-TYS], F NAP-TYS, F TRI-ADR, A ROM S Rus A TUS, A VEN S Rus A TUS England: A SWE-FIN, A BUR S Ger A MUN, F DEN SF SKA-SWE, (F TUN-ION), F PIE H, F MAR SF PIE, [F TYS SF TUN-ION], F ECH-MAO, F SKA-SWE, F NWY SF STP(nc), F STP(nc) H, A PIC-BEL, A BEL-RUH, F LON-NTS Germany: *(A MOS-WAR)*, A LIV-PRU, A MUN H, A KIE SA MUN, F BAL-BER Russia: A SEV-MOS, A TUS S AUS A ROM Notes: () indicate bounced moves. Unfortunately, this means I'll have to delay the Winter '06 deadline until Sunday morning, because I'm leaving for Montreal this morning. However, it would be a good idea if you got a head start on your negotiations for Spring '07, because I'm going to set that deadline for Tuesday night, assuming I have all the adjustments when I return Sunday afternoon. ------------ Deadline ------------ The deadline for Winter 1906 adjustments is Sunday, July 29. While the actual identity of each person was not revealed, it is still an unfortunate error and I apologize to each of you for comitting it. I have put some thought into the matter, and I have not been able to figure out a way to rectify the situation. About all I can do I appeal to you not to make use of this information and to report anyone who tries to contact you. I am assuming that each of you signed on to this game because you wanted to play the Gunboat format and therefore will abide by my request. Again, I apologize for my error. Further note: The previous Russian player had to drop out because he had to get a kidney transplant. _________________________________________________________________________ *********** DAILY DIRK ****************** _________________________________________________________________________ Germany -> Italy: Sorry about excluding you with the TYR non-aggression suggestion. My incredible stategic mind deduced you wouldn't move there anyway (well, actually, I forgot you could...) A revolution has just taken place and the Czar is dead. News of this has not reached the Russian army yet, so until word gets to them, the new provisional government accepts no responsibility for their actions. All: Hello, I'm replacing the old Russian player - I don't know what he was planning when he submitted those moves :) Germany -> England: A three way alliance (with France) is an interesting idea. Somewhat less interesting for me, as I would be on the front lines and you a France could sit on your <rear-ends> (more colorful term deleted lest it reveal my nationality) in back. Why would you be a stonger ally than I? I will get exactly as many supply centers as you this turn. I suppose you won't build any Atlantic fleets if France doesn't? I'm more than open to *constuctive* suggestions. Germany -> France: Apologies again for that unpleasantness in Burgandy. If you really hadn't wanted me to move there, you should have written Winter'00 press. I stayed out this turn. It looks like someone else is going to quell the Flemish uprisings. Oh well, the Flemish are a hardy people. They can rise up again if there are any nearby troops. Germany -> Russia: Scoff Italy may, but you see we are a peace-loving nation. Your Summer '01 press doesn't seem to have been distributed; this was verified by our GM. I assume (if it existed) it contained many more positive trade references. How about an extension of the non-aggression pact? Germany -> Austria: I got the hint. Interesting. Historical. My reservations are less strong than to other possible plans. Good luck in your guessing game. (to be fair -- hey, we're all friends here -- same to Russia) To Italy from AH: Now, I wish that I had stayed in Vienna. I'm sorry to have to take Greece, but considering that I may already lose one home center gives me a great need for it. However, I would like to support your fleet into the Aegean Sea next turn. I will also honor the the agreement not to put military forces in Trieste if you will not put any in Venice. I will however need to build a fleet from time to time and since that is the only place that I can do it... It is obvious from moves and press that both the Russians and the Turks are enemy mine. While the Russians are probably not a major concern of yours, I believe that it is in both our best interests to eradicate the planet of the Turkish scurge as quickly as possible before he can solidify his/her position. To Germany and Italy from AH: I would like to propose a truce between the three of us. As I mentioned in an earlier announcement. I believe that the only way the three of us have any real hope of surviving (much less winning) the outer powers is to ally and help each other. Each one of us is buffers the other two against at least one of the outer powers and can assist against others. Please reply. England -> France: Looks like I can get into Belgium without the need for support. I'd still like to work together - hope to see some comments on my offers in this press. England -> Germany: I'd also like to work with you. It looks like you and France are going to fight each other as usual, so it looks like my three way alliance idea may not work. There's still time to make it happen though. In the event that the three way doesn't work, I'm open to suggestions on what we should do together. My offers to France do not mean that I'm committed to fighting you. Quite the opposite. I'd really like to see us all work together. France -> Italy: Well, gee, I'd kind of like to keep Piedmont neutral, too, but now you've got that army there. How about it heads back away from the border? I guess the trouble with press is that you never know whether it got received or not; I didn't see your proposal until now, with the move. Or maybe all those friendly overtures to Austria were just meant to buy you time so you could aim yourself at France? France -> England: I agree with keeping the Channel empty and working together. I would agree to the supporting you into Belgium, too, but it seems you don't need it anymore (nice turn for you, huh?). I guess in Passchendaele England gets the five centers and France settles for four until next year? France -> Germany: No, no hard feelings directed towards you. I did feel a sudden surge of incompetence coming on, though; I think it's passed now. So would it be all right with you if I manned my borders this next turn (now that you can see I had no intention of rushing east with all my troops)? France -> Austria Although I assume my little problem with Italy was just a result of poor timing, if we do end up fully engaged on the western front, what would you think of a little westward expansion yourself? Of course I have every reason to hope that Italy will behave responsibly (in which case I certainly don't intend to be casting doubt on your budding friendship), but I will be a little weaker next year than I had hoped, so he may be tempted ... France -> The World: Admiral Barselet plumb near exploded when he read of the French Army's maneuverings this spring. "What are you imbeciles doing in Gascony?!" he shouted. "The Navy is perfectly capable of defending Brest (if necessary) from it's patrol patterns in the Atlantic! Give us credit for some intelligence! The Navy, unlike the Army, deserves it! Those fools in the Southern Command ought to have supported the Paris Command into Burgundy, as any school- boy with a few hours of playground experience could have figured out!" Although being treated for a bad case of stress, the Admiral is expected to return to his post before fall. He has also developed some backing for a bid to take over the Commander- in-Chief's post. However, he is expected to spend some time in an introductory statesmanship course before pressing his bid. England -> Russia: Shall we divide Scandinavia among ourselves as usual and then call it quits? Turkey --> All Is there a MidEast Board I can use for expansion? _________________________________________________________________________ Winter will be due Wednesday, July 25 at 5:00 PDT Spring 1902 will be due Friday July 27 at 5:00 PDT Don Daybell GM, Passchendaele _______________________________________________________________________________ If you are interested in joining the fun here on Electronic Protocol, send mail to Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com including your name, address, phone, e-mail address, and COUNTRY PREFERENCE LIST.
