One players orders did not come in until this morning (July 18) due to email difficulty. It was date stamped July 9 so I did not offer a general deadline extension. ************************************************************************* PRESS: ITALY: In today's events elements of the 2nd Imperial Fleets left the ports of Tuscany West in a show of force against the vile French who have blockaded and raped the free city of Marseilles. Sea as well as ground units have partaken in this move inorder to ensure that this show of force will occur. Hopefully the free city of Marseilles will receive the much needed aid and support from the Italian forces waiting to relieve that city from it's oppressive bonds. Elements of the Royal Legions engaged Nazi SS troops in Munich today in hopes of driving this disease from the city they now call their own. According to Colonel Luigi Luigioni of the 135th Assault Troopers (the Blood Angels) "It looks pretty tough, they may be supported by other elements in Bohemia, if that's the fact, we won't be able to get in, and plus, if those 'Nazis' remain in the city of Munich, medical supplies won't reach the citizens there as well as food, that those 'Nazis' have been selling on the black market. They need our help." The Ministry of Defense declared a state of Hostilities exist against the French and the Germans. As to reasons why, Minister of Defense, Bickus Dickus commented by saying "they are all a bunch of nasty evil-doers and we will with God's help crush their rampage through Europe." The Emperor addressed his citizens today stating that a state of Friendliness exists between our country and the citizens of Austria-Hungary. Hopefull both nations can work together to drive back the devil-worshipping Huns. Also a state of Friendliness exists between England and Italy. Both Kings engaged in several talks and hopefully Italian troops will be able to lend help to this ally. Marseille (an unknown reporter): Oh my God, these French Legionaires are every where ! They are killing hundreds of people daily ! All those that resist face the same sentence, execution. I've hidden in this abandoned house for nearly three days, sending out transmissions so that people will be aware of the atrocities occuring. Babies butchered, women cannibalized, machines raped. Oh it's horrible. Wait, I hear a noice... "Houhouhou, we have found zay traitor, prepare ze viring skquad for emmediate exzecution !" No wait, you can't do this, I'm a citizen of the Turkish Empire, you can't kill me ! I'm free to report to the world what you are doing here let me be free ! "Oh, monsieur, you foeget one zing, zis iz no logher a free zity, houhouhou, kill him !" Bang, bang, bang, ratatatatatatatat, boom ! End of transmission. Reflection of Last Weeks Events: Bulgaria under control of the Turkish Empire. Citizens starve and die of diseases brought by the Sultan. Rumanian citizens applaude the actions of the Sultan (at gunpoint). Turkish fleets have a battle over who gets to scuttle each other. Russian units move to Ukraine in hopes of ousting urkish units is Sevastopol. Moscow stands at the ready. A-H and Italian units share combat experiences as both lend each other units to help in the European campaigns against the Huns. Italian units combine forces in the Northern Med inhopes of freeing the city of Marseilles from the clutches of the French. Italian forces shoot it out with German terrorists in Munich. England takes a loss as French and Germans harass English shipping lines. Germany sinks English Liner killing 1200 people. France blockades the Med. I did not receive conditional retreats from anyone, so I will try to combine the retreats with the Winter turn. If you have a retreat, send it in with your Winter press. If you have a build or disband due, send it in with your Winter press. Germany sent me conditional builds before leaving for vacation. A sub will play Germany in his absence. The sub will write Germany's Winter press, so she/he will have a chance to communicate with the world before submitting moves. Winter is due Friday the 20th. As for Russia, you might as well crush him. Germany and England are already attacking him so you might as well take what you can before he dies. Meanwhile, I'll keep Italy busy so he'll be off your back. Italy: I pick my nose and fling my boogers at you! I fart in your general direction! Well, you're definitely not going to win by going head to head with me, especially since Russia is in no position to help you. I suggest you go stab someone else's back. England/Germany: Crush Russia! It's a race between you guys and Turkey to see who grabs the most of his centers! Germany: Thanks for the support to Vienna, but unfortunately I have other problems to take care of before I take Vienna back. Russia: Well you can either vacate Vienna and save your home centers or sit here and have a useless army. England ------- -> Germany: I supported you into St Petes. Next turn we will have to have you move out of St Petes, in the spring (to Livonia?) and move Norway in. This will reassure you by me not being beside your supply centre in Sweden. And Livonia might be a useful place to be because of the Russian army in Warsaw may decide to do. Also, next year at the same time, arrange to exchange hands for Belgium. I will try to move it to Picardy in the Spring turn, if the succeeds, fine. If France is able to stop it, I will (with your permission) move it to the North Sea in the fall, then to the English channel or London the next spring, whichever works better. Or if you prefer I can try Picardy again -- depending on how paranoid you are about me being in the North Sea at the end of a fall turn. I will also continue the pressure on France at sea. I think that you are right about supporting Russia from St Petersburg, Turkey would expand too quickly if we let him continue. If possible, I would like to do the exchanges of Belgium and St Petersburg in the spring. I think we will have enough local advantage to do so. -> France: I actively supported you in the first year to insure that you would get 3 builds, and asked a small favor, that you not make one specific build in return. How much closer can you get to an offer of alliance in a Gunboat diplomacy game. Read my actions! Don't actions speak louder than words? (Look at Turkey's case, he speaks a lot of words, but is he allied to Russia?) I wanted an alliance, it didn't work out because of you. Germany seemed more cooperative, so now we are cooperating. -> Italy: Well maybe France wasn't quite stupid enough to make war on you as well after all. But I still wouldn't like a French unit in Tyrolia if I were you. -> Turkey: Are you still talking alliance with Russia? How about you not attack him this turn. Do nothing aggressive at all. By the way, I would call last turns moves very aggressive, not "defensive" at all. What do you think Russia? -> Austria-Hungary: The most I can give you is moral support. Hang in there. You toasted the army in Albania, now what are you going to do? France ------ France -> England: It's obvious that you will ultimately be successful in your campaign against France. But, how can you stand to work with Germany!? The guy is driving me nuts! France -> Russia: Well, thanks much for the support into Tyrollia. For what- ever that move was worth. I have never been quite so confused before...must be the heat. Anyway, I plan to maintain my attempts to combat Germany. This campaign is probably not in my own best interests--I should concentrate my efforts in defending against England. However, Germany has pissed me off so badly (I don't even read his press anymore out of sheer frustration) that I feel the perhaps misplaced need to keep at him. Sigh... You spoke about my moving to Bohemia this turn. Because of Germany's moves, I did not do this and I hope you didn't waste a support on me. Do you plan on vacating Vienna? I owe you one...let me know what would be the most help. France -> Italy: Just reiterating my peaceful intent toward Italy. France -> Turkey: I, too, have enjoyed our bantering in the press. I would, however, feel even better if you would stop talking about vacationing in the Iberian! Anyway, you'll have to compete with England for the best beaches soon. BTW, I'm afraid that you have been relegated to a far second in the blathering department. Germany has proved to be far superior in every category. Don't you wish you had the Kaiser for a neighbor? France -> Austria: Anybody home?!? Germany ------- Germany -> Turkey: I think we should stop flatter each other, it doesn't look good. Anyway, I think Austria has played best of all of us. Further, we will have things to deal with, you, England and me. It seems that I have given you a chance, by mistake. Considering your efforts before, you won't be late. Don't see it as friendly gesture, please. Germany -> England: I don't dare to go against Belgium this fall, and force you to disband an important fleet in exchenge with a useless german army. I prefer to take the risk that France may get it. It is rather unprobable that France will try to get Belgium if we leave it open. It will in that case be dislodged in much the same way as in 1902. It would be good if we could exchange St Petersburg and Belgium as soon as possible. I hope we Have agreed. I stressed a little that I want to command in the north, so I think that I am there now. Unfortunately, I can't write any winter press, but I promise that I will arrange something in the spring, in order to get you into St Petersburg. We shouldn't wait any longer! I see no problem in getting you in there in the spring already. You'll get it, don't worry. Just take a look on what our heathen is trying to do, and you can be sure that you will get St Petersburg. The only possible way to bounce you in St Petersburg is if there are units in both Moscow and Livonia, and that is highly unlikely. I know that I can trust you about Belgium. I do see that you need my pressure, and that you can't afford any interrupts in your advance. Even if I didn't get St Petersburg, it's not a disaster. We can't expect that everything can run as smoothly as it has so far. We'll have to count that as misfortune in that case. I will support you into St Petersburg in the spring whatever happens. Great that our North Sea politics succeeds! (Turkey, can't you howl a little as a fanfar?) Germany -> Austria: I wonder if you took the chance. I now see that it could look like a trap in order to break a possible russian support to the french army. As you see, that was not my intentions. Germany -> Russia: If Austria and Turkey don't start to quarrell soon, you will be in trouble. As you see I'm not after you. See me as a friend hereafter, as long as you don't begin to grumble about St Petersburg. Germany -> Italy: It's not likely that I will help Austria any more, and I will never help him against you. If I could do anything, I would try to make peace between you, but there's a limit on how much I may poke around in others businesses. Germany -> France: Have we stopped squabbel now? Sorry about the spring press, I couldn't resist it. But make offers! I'm not at all impossible to talk with, but I think that we should have something to talk about first. What about DMZ Tyrolia and Burgundy to begin with? You are right that no one is pressuring me, I've been unusually lucky. But I'm not a threat towards any of you. All my units are too separated and disordered to do that. Italy ----- Italy -> Austria: It seems that Russia can't help me against you which means that I can't attack you succesfully, either. This has forced me to reconsider my strategy, and now I have started to think about an Austro-Italian alliance against Turkey. Obviously, you and Turkey could destroy me easily, so an Austro-Turkish alliance against Italy seems more profitable to you, but what happens after I have been destroyed? You will be surrounded on three sides by Turkish forces. And you WILL be surrounded by Turkish forces because I do my best to ensure that Turkey gets as much of Italian territory as possible. Italy -> France: My spring press didn't make any sense? Well, I thought that you disbanded PiE, not PiC. Italy -> Turkey: I could help you against Russia, but to do that I need a free passage through Constantinople. Russia ------ Hey everybody, Turkey says this is the year that he's going to make good on all of his promises to me! Anybody want to lay odds on that? Germany, England, I can't keep you out of St. Pete, so I'll just have to deal with the loss. I am hosed anyway, so what better thing to do than to make good on all my promises to Turkey and kamikaze the bugger. Austria, think about the broad Eastern frontier open to you! Well, as they say in France, c'est la guerre. Turkey ------ Turkey -> England: Your booming confidence is showing up in the press. I guess having France in a stranglehold brings out your best. Thanks for continuing to incite distrust of me in everyone while you deflect attention from your own endeavours. Turkey -> Germany: At first I thought you were being unreasonable to England when you suggested he stay out of the North Sea and not build on the east coast. Now I am not so sure. Sorry to hear that you don't trust me. Reread some of my press and you'll see that I have been trustworthy to Austria. Russia is indeed another story, but examine his threats to kill me and I think you will see why I have taken the actions that I have. Against my best wishes, he has continued to not take my peace offerings seriously. At any rate, I do not disagree with your actions and I hope that we can cooperate. Of course, you'll have to do something about your distrust of me, but I remind you that you have not provoked me, nor I you. Your analysis of my not supporting the Austrian Budapest army was wrong, but that's history. If Russia and Italy had coordinated their attacks, there was indeed nothing that I could have done to help. But fortunately, this is a gunboat game and coordination is not very easy. We lucked out. Austria and I are getting along fine, and there is nothing you can say to change that. Turkey -> France: Wish I could help, but your Italian friend won't let me send it. If you go, he's next. Hope he sees this eventually. Turkey -> Austria: A new day is dawning for the Austrian empire. Please remember your friend. I'm sticking with you through thick and thin. I have had a consistent Austrian policy, and it looks like greater things are to come. Let's keep up the good teamwork. I'm still trying to break out into the Med. I'm also trying to strengthen your northeast flank. I hope you supported my F Eas-Ion move this turn. If so, I'd really like to see support of F Aeg-Ion next turn as well. These are just requests, not demands. Trying to break this logjam. If this didn't succeed this turn and if Italy still has five centers, he'll probably build a fleet and make it much more difficult on both of us. Sure wish he'd join our cause, but it looks like it is a fight to the death now. Even if he makes some progress against us, when France falls he's screwed. What a waste. And we could all be doing great things together. If F Eas-Ion did not work this turn, I want to change tactics and move F Aeg-Ion with support from F Eas S F Aeg-Ion. I am moving my other fleet to Con so that when the Aeg fleet gets into the Ionian, the Con fleet can fall in behind it. Turkey -> Russia: Now for Russian policy. Yeah right. Ridicule my offers for peace. I'm going to move again for position this fall. I have left Moscow alone again, so perhaps your St. Pete fleet will still be around. Do you want my help or not? Turkey -> Italy: I have but one question for you: What do you plan to do when France collapses? I'd still like to cooperate, but I'm still awaiting an answer from you. Turkey -> All: Well, I've been painted to be the evil empire in this game. Look at the board, fellows. Are you sure I am the real threat? ANONYMOUS: ---------- TOUT LE TEMPS Paris (UPI): In a dramatic statement today, Foreign Minister Jacques B. Nimble announced the end of diplomatic relations with Germany. The move was not unexpected, but the stern demeanor with which M. Nimble delivered the news showed the extreme gravity of the situation with France's nearest neighbor. "It's obvious," stated France's ranking diplomat, "that communication with the Kaiser and his regime is impossible. Messages are confusing if not unintelligle. No recourse was left to us." The atmosphere in Paris is one of uncertainty and hesitation. Never before has military occupation been such a real possibility. Thanks for all your support. England/Germany: Don't stop attacking Russia now...you might as well go all the way! England ------- -> Germany: I hope we can continue cooperating as we have done previously. (Have you got copies of previous press for the last 3 or 4 turns? If not, you should probably ask the gm for such press.) I will move out of Belgium (to Picardy) in the spring, and will expect you to move in. Be careful to arrange the attacks/supports vs France to make sure things work out right. In St. Petersburg, I expect Russia will disband the St. Petersburg fleet, so best would be to move from St. Petersburg to Finland while supporting me into St. Petersburg from Gulf of Bothnia. I would suggest not moving to Livonia, since it would be better to leave the Russian army in Moscow somewhere to retreat if Turkey were to dislodge it. (We may be too late to maintain Russia against Turkey, but we should try.) Even if we can't support Russia, we have to stop Turkey from further progress in that area. I wish the retreats had been done properly be France, I am very interested in where his fleet in MAO will go. -> France: What is wrong with working with Germany? We seem to work well together, even if his press is sometimes a little cryptic. -> Austria: I think Turkey may be ahead in the race to grab Russia's sectors. -> Russia: In the Turkish style of diplomacy, I think this is the right time for Germany and I to offer you an alliance, and state that we were just taking St. Petersburg to make an alliance easier. Well, we are interested in helping you to stick around, we would rather you keep your supply centres than for Turkey to get them, and would like to support you. If you get forced out of Moscow, I will support you back in, if at all possible, you might even have Germany support you into Galicia, to remove the Turkish leverage on your armies. -> Italy: Is Turkey beginning to worry you? I would expect so. You seem to be in a tight situation, but I think your best bet to fight off Turkey. -> Turkey: What with everyone proposing DMZ's and truce, how about we arrange a non-aggression pact/neutral line somewhere through Russia accross to MAO/western Mediteranean? Sound fair? (Of course, I will be sharing my half of the world with Germany, will you be sharing you half with anyone?) France ------ France -> England: Sounds like Germany is writing your press now! ARGH! Any chance that you'll stop beating up on me? I would like to try again with you. France -> Austria: Monte Python would've been proud! You must of course speak with zee Fransch accentte. Your words were very appropriate for your situation as well as my own. France -> Russia: Sorry about the loss of a unit. The French people are deeply grieved. Especially since it will happen at home very soon! Still interested in cooperating at least in some small fashion on Germany's eastern border. Ideas? France -> Turkey: Nothing to complain about this turn! Except for the failure of my experiments, one after the other. This game will really teach me a lesson. Anyway, since you got the Ionion, I'll expect you on the Riviera in short order. For some reason, that thought no longer bothers me too much. Germany ------- Germany -> England: I will support you into StPete in the Spring. Other than that, I'll do my best against France on land. Germany -> France: Hmm, seems like we are inherited enemies. Can we possibly stop this nonsense? As with the Austria/Italy situation, if we continue to attack each other, all we'll do is create opportunities for everyone else. Germany -> Turkey: So what happens after Russia is gone. I hope we can avoid violence in the Silesia/Prussia territories. Italy ----- Italy -> Austria: What about cooperation against Turkey? Italy -> Turkey: What about peace between us, eh? Italy -> World: HELP (-: Russia ------ Russia-Turkey: I'm going to wipe you off of the board. I know that this looks hostile, but it's to strengthen our alliance. Turkey ------ Turkey -> Russia: If it's war you want, it's war you've got. Sorry it has to be this way, but you have asked for it. Turkey -> England: Satisfied? No more Russia-Turkey alliance talk. I'd still like to see the wicked witches cooperate. Get finished with France and then we can talk. Turkey -> Germany: Welcome aboard. The previous German was arguing with England over the North Sea. You should hold onto St. Pete, steal Belgium and send the GoB fleet back toward Sweden to cover yourself against any English misbehavior. Turkey -> France: Help is on the way! Turkey -> Italy: Nice try. An Italian-Austrian alliance against Turkey. What a great idea! You have been acting as the Austrian's proctologist for three years. After probing him repeatedly and not getting much of anything, now you want to be his friend and have him fight the only true friend that he has had in this world? Where's your head? I suggest you continue to rethink your strategy. Your best move is to join Austria and me and send our fleets west to meet the oncoming threat. England can enter the Med the next turn. Otherwise, we can start fighting each other, waste time, and then get crushed by the Anglo-German steamroller. You better come around to reality soon, or I, too, will just have to fling boogers and fart on you. Things are really going to get ugly down here. Turkey -> Austria: Thank you for your support! I think I'll try to move F Aeg-Ion next turn as well, so if F Gre isn't busy, I'd appreciate more help. Again, if you have something better to do, by all means do so. I loved your press to Italy last time. Every time I reread that I bust out laughing. I also hope that you'll ignore Italy's alliance proposal. You may not be comfortable with me all around you, but I have proven time after time that I have no intention of knifing you. The German-English team are the real trouble in this world, and we are all going to have to join together to put a stop to them. Wish Italy could see this too. If he would just ask his ally France, France would tell him the same. There is a stalemate line around here somewhere. If we all join together and hold it, England and Germany will fight each other sooner or later. The problem is that France is about to lose one end of it. Then we all get flushed. I have no intention of becoming a Tidy Bowl man in a German/English WC. ANONYMOUS: ---------- TOUT LE TEMPS Paris (UPI): In an unprecedented move late yesterday, M. le President ousted the Deputy Foreign Minister assigned to England. The President is apparently deeply disturbed about the breakdown of relations with England, and has laid the blame on the ranking officer. When asked why the Deputy FM let things deteriorate so badly, the President replied, "Je ne sais pas. The FM has been very cranky lately. It must be that time of the month." John says he may be able to get mail out on the 8 and 17 of August. Keep us informed, John, and I'll slip some deadlines if we have to. But I do hope that everything will settle into a weekly groove beginning in September! (To editorialize, I think part of the problems is that Eric Klien's sign-up process isn't too nice for the less popular variant games. A game could start months after the first players sign up and their commitments may have changed radically.) Spring 1901 moves are due Saturday, July 21, at noon. Send them to matt@severian.chi.il.us. Including conditional retreats would expedite the game a bit. - Belli personae - Moulinex bnrgate!bmers1!dgibbs@uunet.uu.net David Gibbs Zion Tribe jzzr@cc.utah.edu Dave Francetic Fnebish Legion dougi@astro.as.utexas.edu Doug Ingram Veszpa School of Teleology (VST)tbvanbelle@watcgl.waterloo.edu Terry Van Belle to be replaced by . . . murphy@dg-rtp.dg.com John Murphy ROM Richard_V._Lamb@ub.cc.umich.edu Richard V. Those provinces interested in chapters of their own need apply at the head office in Switzerland. Active recruiting will begin this year, so don't miss out! The distinguished president of the Legion, Sir Williamson B. "Tacasita" Fneb (pronounced Fneeb) was caught by reporters yesterday skiing in the Alps and had this to say: "There are those who scorn our initiation practices and strange rituals, but I say that the time has come for opera in sign language, routine persucution of snotty French people, and a good hard look at the hidden meanings found within all rabbit tracks worldwide, not just around Stonehenge. I call on all of my fellow men with whom these issues strike a resonant chord deep within to join us now in our fight to save humanity from its own terrible, terrible ignorance of really important issues like these." In other news, commander Marty Siles of the Portuguese chapter has been invited to Madrid for academic study this Spring. Assuming the Spanish will be gracious hosts as always, Siles hopes they won't mind if he brings along the army. Admiral Henry "Hank" Arrah of the Serbian legion has reportedly tendered his resignation papers only days after accepting command of the army there. When asked why, Arrah said, "Why the hell do you think? I'm a <expletive deleted> admiral! I want to sail the Black Sea or something, not toil around in the grimy Balkans!" He is scheduled for an emergency meeting next week in Geneva with President Fneb. Publisher comments: If you are interested in joining the fun here on Electronic Protocol, send mail to Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com including your name, address, phone, e-mail address, and country preference list. He will add you to the waiting list and get you into a game as soon as possible. David Gibbs uunet!bnrgate!bmers58!dgibbs or bmers58!dgibbs@bnrgate Eric's note: I will be posting this chapter until David is able to get a direct connection to rec.games.pbm. He may never get a direct connection, but his building the chapter still saves me some work. Up
