After months of detailed work, the Pope told a stunned television audience, he has discovered a sinister undercurrent in the modern diplomatic community. "First it was Italy, taking a few months to decide what to do. Then France's prime minister disappears. Then the German Kaiser doesn't answer his calls for a season or two. Now Italy again holds up everything. I tell you, God is getting tired of all this and will strike us all down if we don't speed up!" When asked what form this heavenly retribution might take, the Pope said candidly that he didn't know. "God works in mysterious ways," he told reporters, shaking his head, "but I could have sworn He was muttering something about 'civil disorder'." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rome (UPI) --- In a press conference today, the King of Italy made a public call for the end of hostilities in Europe. "Well, uh, I'd say that it looks like Russia and us have the whole situation well in hand," Elvis said in a press conference today. "There don't seem to be much reason to keep up this war--we might as well just call it off and call us the winners." The King also cited the recent diplomatic problems in Europe as a sign that it might soon be time to call the whole thing off and go home. "I don't know about ya'll, but I'm getting a little tired of all this." the King confided to reporters. "But if workin' this think out until the end (whatever THAT may be) is what it's gonna take, I'll do it." Sources close to the palace say that the war is beginning to cut into the King's fall tour plans... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paris (Le Monde) --- Frustrated over its unsuccessful attempt to negotiate a peace treaty with Italy, the French government announced that it is prepared to surrender to Russia in an effort to end the bloody war as soon as possible. "Our land is your land," French President Clouseau told the Czar. "Come get whatever you want -- no strings attached." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moscow (PRAVDA) --- The Czar announced that the Russian army occupying Silesia would, in the Fall of 1908, follow the instructions given by King Elvis in the Summer of 1908. The Russian army ordered into Berlin would also attempt to follow any instructions given by the Italian King over the summer, although that promise was not as absolute and might be influenced by events surrounding the North Sea. "We've got to make some progress in our move west. I hope this is a good way to avoid confusion and get us going," said the Czar in a letter to King Elvis. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rome (UPI) --- King Elvis's body was found today outside Mamma Toupe's Pasta House. Medical examiners have determined the cause of death to be heart failure, but some hear suspect otherwise. Presley's lifestyle created many enemies for the king, and other rumors persist. Stories of all night pasta binges and stashes of spaghetti have begun to surface. Friends and family vehement deny that the King had any such problems. "He just wasn't getting enough exercise" his sister has said. In the meantime, all foreign matters have been held in check. The state issued a statement that the 2'nd division's movement into Galicia is meant only to insure the Germans do not move there themselves. Inside sources have commented that with Elvis dead, the last vestiges of the paranoid fear of Russia would go away. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GM Notes: Yes, I was forced to replace the Italian player due to repeatedly late orders. Hopefully the German player will submit one more set of orders. After that, I don't expect his orders will make much of a difference, and so I can work something out. We have two proposals, one for an I/R draw, and one for a R win. Please vote on both of these. Summer press (and your vote) is due Wednesday. Please try to get it to me on time. Cheers! Lord Valentine MANHATTAN: Summer 1908 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ no retreats PRESS: CZAR RESPONDS TO EUROPEAN REQUEST AND RESTATES RUSSIAN POSITION ELVIS ALIVE!!! ITALY GOES ON ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moscow (AP) --- The Czar called a press conference in Moscow Square yesterday afternoon at which he announced: "Several of the leaders of other European nations have requested that Europe be united under Russian leadership for the improved prosperity of all. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for such a high complement and to answer their request. If indeed Europe is unanimous in its desire for my leadership I would be honored to assume the role. But if such desire is not unanimous let me re-state the long-held Russian position. I have been endeavoring to cooperate with Italy to bring peace to Europe under joint Russian/Italian leadership. My only true goal is for that cooperation to continue until it achieves joint success for the Russian/Italian alliance. There is some uncertainty about the desires of the new Italian leadership. I have reason to be optimistic that they will continue the successful alliance between our two great nations that is finally beginning to bear fruit with solid Italian control of Munich. I would also like to emphasize again my distaste for the French "strategy" of one-sided surrender as a means to coerce French-Italian cooperation and reiterate my assurance that Russia will not attempt to obtain advantage by accepting it." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CAPE VINCENT (UPS) --- Elvis was seen today outside this small resort town in the USA. Margie VanDerStone claims she spotted the king while fishing. "He was on the shore in a small cottage. I'm sure it was him." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Naples (AP) --- Temporary commander in chief Billy Joel spoke today: "If the Czar would be so kind as to assist us into Kiel, we would be grateful. With little cooperation Germany will be dead." "We are thinking of bringing in a group to replace the King, kind of a committee thing. We're evaluating a few right now." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GM NOTES: Both proposals failed, though not everybody sent me a vote. So the game goes on. Fall 1908 orders are due Monday. Please try to get them in on time. Cheers! ENGLISH FLEET FINALLY RETURNS HOME! KING EXPRESSES DISPLEASURE AT EVENTS IN GERMANY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IRP (Imperial Russian Press) March 1905 In a very short press conference the only thing the Czar said was: "Russia declares war on England!". Our noble ruler seemed angry that the English forces are the only forces left on Russian soil and ordered the troops to correct that. The treaty that gave England all Scandinavia was also cancelled, because England hadn't followed it. Talks with Germany about this region could begin as soon as Germany removed its troops from the Russian border. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Munich Star April 1905 The new Kaiser finally addressed the press after weeks of silence. He justified the move into Prussia, claiming it is "strictly defensive", and requested that the Russians leave the Eastern border peacefully. However, the Kaiser had no kind words for his northern neighbor. "Death to the English!", he proclaimed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Naples News Sept 14, 1904. The Italian foreign minister spoke for a few minutes outside the palace today. "We have ordered our fleets to support some German maneuvers this spring. It is my belief however that the German high command will instead order their fleet into the Bight so that it may assist in the conflict there. By asking for our assistance in the manner they did, I can only assume they wanted to force the English into defending the position in the North Sea. The English have mustered enough troops to force the French out of Liverpool. I have relayed to the French that they should head back to Wales so that we may coordinate an assault on London. Such a blow will surely impact on the morale of the English. Rumors that the Empress has been avoiding public appearances because of threats from the People's Peace Phront are entirely false. The Empress does not listen to or negotiate with fanatics." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hungarian Herald Jan 26, 1905 Obviously, since Lord Dan has ordered another Media Blackout (reason is unknown) we have no news to report! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The London Times May 10, 1905 With the coming of warmer weather, the ice floes on the northern coast of Europe have finally thawed, allowing the English fleet that was stranded in St.Petersburg's Northern Harbor to return to more temperate climes. King Edward expressed many thanks to the Russian people for their hospitality to our "limeys", and for their efforts in aiding the British peoples in reclaiming Liverpool, which appears imminent. Said the King: "As I stated before, once the recapture of Liverpool had been achieved, and at this moment it does not appear that the French fleet can prevent it, we would be pulling out of St.Petersburg. Had it not been for the severe weather which iced in the harbor, we would have left late last Fall. Alas, we were not able to do so. Nevertheless, we bid the people of St.Petersburg a fond farewell, a hearty thanks, and wish them continued prosperity under the Czar." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The London Times June 11, 1905 In an exclusive interview with The Times, Kind Edward today made the following foreign policy statement concerning the negotiations with the leadership in Germany: "As you all know, my offer of cooperation with the German Kaiser was met with hostility, despite my best efforts to convince him to the contrary. We had hoped that the recent ascention to power of Kaisetrix Helga would present new opportunities of alliance; however, this has not been the case, as the Kaisetrix bears even more hostility toward us that the recent Kaiser. In fact, rumor has it that Helga hates our people so much, that she refused to study any English history in her limited schooling; hence her error in referring to me as King Philip, when any scholar of Europe, particular those that purport to rule, knows that there has never been an English ruler by that name. We have since broken off all talks with the Kaisetrix, and have made request to both the Russian Czar and the Italian Empress as to the possibility of an alliance against this most unwelcome addition to the leaders of Europe." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GM Notes: Hi! He apologized for his move to Prussia in the Spring, explaining that his only purpose was to thwart an expected attack on Prussia by the Czar. The spy who supplied the faulty information has been appropriately disposed of. He also requested that Russia move the army from Warsaw to Galacia in the Fall to reduce border tensions. He promised to likewise retreat from Prussia. In response to the aggressive moves bny the Austrians, he said "Make my day! If you want war, you are going to get it." He then proceded to ask for Italian help in controlling Austria, emphasizing "I don't ask for much, just a unit or two in the Tyrolia-Munich region." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hungarian Herald June 26, 1905 The media blackout has ended. Lord Dan has again allowed the press to make public the internal goings on of the Austrian Empire. In his latest (and only) press engagement, Lord Dan made the following statements: The Czar and I fully anticipated the Turkish maneuvers and acted accordingly. What the Sultan doesn't know is that there is no place left to hide and that it is only a matter of time before our troops throw him completely out of power. I hope the Czar is still planning to take Ankara in the Fall because I plan to help him get it one way or the other. I would also like to again thank the Princess for the Italian assistance we received in the Balkan area and was more than happy to thwart the German attempt to encroach on our homeland. We are even willing to build a fleet and send it to help out in the North Sea area if requested (but will not do it unless requested). However, it does seem that the Germans still haven't learned their lesson on defensive tactics. You don't march you troops to the outskirts of another country's city and call it "defensive maneuvers". Their intent is was obvious. I only want to assure the Czar that everything is under control and not to worry. The Germans will not be getting Warsaw again. If the Russian troops just concentrate on matters at hand (All of Scandanavia), then the Austrian troops will keep the Germans in line on the home front. Negotiations are open for discussion at this time, that is if the new leader of Germany is concerned about keeping Munich as a part of the German empire." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IRP (Imperial Russian Press) June 1905 Due to the English retreat from St. Petersburg there is renewed hope of peace. Russia will not attack England or any of its colonies in 1905 to give King Edward a chance to make peace or alliance proposals. Russia is willing to help England to gain German supply centers in return for one Scandinavian supply center, preferably Norway. As a sign of goodwill the English fleet should move from Norway to Sweden this Fall and attack Germany via the Baltic Sea in 1906. King Edward can be assured that we won't use this sign of goodwill to take Norway, as the Russian Northern Army can't leave St. Petersburg at the moment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IRP (Imperial Russian Press) June 1905 Even if the attack against the Turkish capital Ankara failed, the Czar thanks Lord Dan for his support. He promised to attack Ankara again and again until it falls, so that the Turkish army is at least occupied and cannot support any moves against the Austrian forces in Smyrna. Due to Lord Dan's Media Blockout his plans regarding Germany are totally unknown to the Czar, but he has promised Lord Dan support as soon as he would request it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Geneva, I hope the current situation in the Middle East shows us all that this is good fun, but in real life, war is hell. I hope it does not escalate further. (Now, on to jokes about Hussein;-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Naples News July 16, 1905. This weekend the Empress allowed the Naples News reporter to visit the place and conduct an exclusive interview. NN: Empress, how are things proceeding in the war with the English? Ieda: Well, as you should know, we are still maneuvering our fleets in the Atlantic. After this fall we should be in a good position to push the English out of some "key" territories. NN: What about the French? Ieda: The French have been silent now for some time, but their military actions have spoken for themselves. They followed through with the trade agreement, and we hope to look forward to further interaction against the English. NN: Do you have any plans now? Ieda: If the French are set up to siege London this fall, we should have a three way attack. I have asked the Germans to send their fleet once again into the North Sea to divert the English there. Our fleet in the English Channel should then be able to assist the French into London. NN: Your advisors have stated that the Germans should move to the "Bight", what happened here? Ieda: I discovered that one of my advisors was using a copy of an Atlas found in Brest. It was left there by the English. We do think in the long run that the German fleet should be able to get into the Bight or North Sea and help re-take Denmark. NN: What about your lack of public visibility recently? Ieda: I have simply had a minor illness that has kept me indoors. NN: Thank you for this chance to talk with you... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GM NOTES: Here's the Summer press. Fall orders are due on Tuesday. His response was, "At the current moment the Germans are on the outskirts of Warsaw, which happens to belong to one of our only two allies. I will do what ever it takes to prevent the Germans from taking Warsaw (again!). If the Germans elect to start a war, I will deal with them on the same level we have dealt with Turkey. I think he was off watching too many Clint Eastwood movies, that's where!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Swiss Inquirer: These headlines top this seasons stories: When will Austria stop Russia? How long will it be until England offends another country? Will Russia ever take a firm stance with England or Germany or Turkey... When will the Germans stop looking for a fight? Does anyone know what Italy is doing? Is Turkey dead yet? Can France make as dramatic a comeback as Russia? Do we still have 7 countries involved in this? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IRP (Imperial Russian Press) September 1905 The latest press by the German head of state kept the whole Kremlin laughing all day. The Czar said: "Don't you think that this transvestite, Helga the Kaiser, is hillariously funny? Marching with two armies against Warsaw, which we only recently retook, and asking our garrison there to retreat to reduce border tensions, is the funniest thing I've ever heard. Of course we will defend Warsaw and watch silly Helga lose Munich to Lord Dan." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Munich Star September 1905 The Kaiser was apologetic in his latest press conference. Addressing Lord Dan and the Czar, "As you can see from my recent orders, I have learned my lesson. May I propose an eternal peace between our illustrious nations?" He also expressed his interest in keeping Munich in German hands, adding that he hopes the Austrians don't mind. It is rumored that a special envoy has been sent to Rome asking for aid. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GM Notes: I received all the orders on time! :-) I even did the turn a day early! :-) However, I was a bonehead and didn't send it out! :-( Thanks for reminding me! :-) Autumn press is due Monday, 8/27. I had a query about black press. I'm assuming that it is not allowed in this game. If anybody really wants it, we can take a vote. =============================================================================== Results from KHAN SPRING 1902 =============================================================================== KHAN: Spring 1902 ---England----------------------------------Germany---------------------------- A NWY - Swe FAIL |A HOL H F Nts - SKA |A Tyl - PIE F BEL H |A MUN - Sil BOUNCE (War) F LON S (F Edi - Nts) |F DEN S (F Kie - Bal) F Edi - NTS |F Kie - BAL ---France-------------------------------|---Austria---------------------------- A Spa - MAR |A SER S TUR (A Bul - Rum) A BRE H |A VEN S GER (A Tyl - Pie) CUT (Rom) A PAR H |A Bud - TRI F Por - SPS |F Adr - APU F Mar - GOL |F Tri - ALB ---Italy--------------------------------|---Turkey----------------------------- A ROM - Ven CUTS |A Bul - RUM A Tun - GRE |A Sev H FAIL (Disband) F ION C (A Tun - Gre) |A Con - BUL ---Russia-------------------------------|A Smy - ARM A UKR S (A Mos - Sev) |F BLA S (A Sev H) CUT (Rum) A Mos - SEV |------------------------------------- A WAR - Sil BOUNCE (Mun) | F Rum - Bla CUTS (Disband) | F SWE - Bal FAIL | ----------------------------------------- Turkish A Sev has no retreat and is forced to disband. I had the Russian press for a while. Only the German press was delayed, and I seem to have mail problems with him. (If somebody could forward him a copy of the moves, it would be nice.) There's no need for a summer turn, so Fall 1902 orders will be due Monday 8/27. Please turn them in earlier if you can. I'll probably start sending out reminders Friday or Saturday. Cheers! Lord Valentine England is on vacation now and was not able to submit orders before he left. So the deadline is extended one week. Please try to get your orders in by Monday, September 3. Ger --> World: Hey, my orders are sure easy to write these days... and it's all part of my plan. Yeah, that's it! Hide your women and cover your supply centers, England and France! Here I come! Ger --> England: Me take a stab personally? Perish the thought! By the way, that's a nice family you've got there. It'd be a shame if something happened to them, now, wouldn't it? :) Ger --> France: I think you lucked out! If England hasn't been convinced by now to take you out, pat yourself on the back for backing into a two-player victory! Ger --> Italy: Thanks for the moral support. You still have a faint chance if England stabs France. In the meantime, I applaud your efforts to squash the Turk! Ger --> Russia: Thank you for the support as well. I'm sorry to say that I was right about England's plans to invade you, especially since you're doing a great job of helping put one of the biggies in the can. I hope you've helped convince him that France and Turkey have not earned a share in the victory. Ger --> Turkey: Nah, I don't need to say it. ITALY -> ENGLAND: Come on, ENGLAND ... stab FRANCE so we can finish up this game! England -> France: No problem with your fleets. Just keep the DM Zones empty as we agreed. Whats wrong with the two-way idea? England -> Germany: Have fun in France. You were a tough opponent. Russia -> Italy Throw all your weight at France and get back your homeland (and his while your at it), Excedrin headache #70 is about to hit Turkey. Don't forget to take Greece next turn. Russia -> England You want this game as a single victory don't you? Well, give us a little more leash and it's yours. Turkey and France won't have anything to say about the matter. If you don't think I'm doing so well against Turkey, why is he going to lose two supply centers this year? Trust me, I know what I am doing (even though it is admittedly rather unorthodox). Turkey -> France: O.K.- I supported you. Was that the right one? Anyways, Russia has decided, for some unknown reason, to keep pressing war against me. O.K., then, war it is- so I might be a bit harried in helping you with italy. Don't worry, though, at the rate you are going, Italian homeland will be French soil! Turkey -> England: I don't know what in the heck your problem is- perhaps you should switch to a de-caffinated brand of coffee. Look- you and I are on differing sides of the world- I don't see what argument we can have. The way I see it, if russia is going to buy your pablum of "I'll send you help from the north" and france buys your "Land forces just to capture warsaw, yup, yup, yup"- than so much the better for you- and I'll watch for you in the winners circle! Turkey -> Russia: Take a valium! No- take SEVERAL valium. You are going to survive against me just fine- you and I make a nice stalemate wall against one another. I won't have to worry about Italy much longer- France is rolling over Italian homelands right now- Italy can't build on Austrian SC's. Take your plunge of the ol' knife now- stab Italy, gain yourself up good in austria (who's going to stop you from taking Budapest, hell- I would even suppot you there if I could)- and then you will have the forces built up to attack me. Why am I telling you all this- because I know that you are a no-brained loser who can come up with no better strategy for himself than beating his skull uselessly and writing press in capital letters. Turkey-> Germany: See ya'! You ought to have known that france would have never left Italy alone to help you against England- he had to make a choice between two quite powerful foes- he chose Italy and be-friended England. If he had gone the other way, Italy and Russia would have eaten me, there would have been no reisistance as Italy rolled over Russia, Italy could stave off france with a stalemate blockade, and you and france would have ended up losers to Italy instead of England. Hey- that is the way things go in this game, you know what I mean? Up
