Diplomacy zine -- Chapter One From: daybell@nunki.usc.edu (Donald Daybell) Date: Sun, 26 Aug 1990 23:42:51 +0000 Issue 181 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL ----------- Chapter One ----------- This chapter contains results for the games BLITZKRIEG, GETTYSBURG, and RED STORM RISING, and Gunboat game PASSCHENDAELE Winter of 1915 and Spring of 1916 of game BLITZKRIEG (BNC 1989HL) (GM is dougi@astro.as.utexas.edu/ Doug Ingram) Blitzkrieg -- Winter 1915 As soon as word arrives that enemy missiles are on the way, all the vital government officials will be whisked away by helicopter to a secret mountain hideout guarded by heavily armed men. To determine which officials are vital enough to go to the hideout, the government periodically sends out a questionnaire: TO: All Top Government Officials FROM: The Government SUBJECT: Who Gets to Go to the Secret Nuclear Hideout Please circle the statement below that best describes how vital you are. Be as sincere as possible. 1. I am extremely vital and should be whisked away, in the first helicopter if possible. 2. I am not all that vital and should be left to die a horrible death with the ordinary citizens. Using the results of this questionnaire, the government has determined that all of its top officials are vital. -- Dave Barry, "You'll Look Radiant" *************** England: Retreat F PIE-GOL Germany: Disband F BER Russia: Build A SEV *************** Supply Centers: Total/(Units Owned)/Status Austria: BUD, VIE, TRI, GRE, SER, BUL, CON, 13 (13) VEN, RUM, ANK, NAP, ROM, WAR England: LON, LVP, EDI, NWY, STP, DEN, BRE, 14 (14) POR, SPA, PAR, TUN, MAR, BEL, SWE France: 0 (0) Germany: KIE, BER, MUN, HOL 4 (4) Italy: 0 (0) Russia: SEV, SMY, MOS 3 (3) Turkey: 0 (0) *************** Unit Positions -- Winter 1915: Austria: F ION, F AEG, A GAL, A SIL, A TUS, A VEN, A WAR, A UKR, A TYR, F NAP, A BOH, F ROM, A VIE England: A STP, A BUR, F DEN, F TUN, F GOL, F MAR, F TYS, F WME, F BAL, F NWY, F BAR, A RUH, A BEL, F NTS Germany: A KIE, A PRU, A MUN, A LIV Russia: A PIE, A MOS, A SEV *************** GM Notes: Spring 1916 turns will be due one week from today: that is Monday, August 20th, at 11 am. Blitzkrieg -- Spring 1916 The best way to get information during a nuclear war is to listen to the Emergency Broadcast Radio Network, which is the organization that broadcasts those tests all the time: ANNOUNCER: This is a test. For the next thirty seconds, you will hear an irritating, high-pitched squeal. We here at the Emergency Broadcast Network are bored to death, waiting for a real nuclear war, so for the past few years we've been varying the pitch of the squeal just a little bit every time. Our theory is that if we find just the right pitch, it will drive certain species of birds insane with sexual desire. We know we're getting close, because during our last test a Cleveland man carrying one of those enormous portable radios turned up real loud was pecked to death by more than three hundred lusting pigeons. -- Dave Barry, "You'll Look Radiant" *************** Austria: A UKR S Rus A SEV-MOS, A WAR S Rus A MOS-LIV, A GAL SA WAR, (A BOH-MUN), A SIL SA BOH-MUN, A TYR SA BOH-MUN, (A VIE-BOH), A VEN S Rus A PIE, A TUS S Rus A PIE, F ROM SF NAP-TYS, (F NAP-TYS), [F ION SF NAP-TYS], F AEG SF ION England: [A STP S Ger A LIV](nso), A BUR S Ger A MUN, F DEN S Ger A KIE, (F TUN-ION), F GOL SF TYS, F MAR SF GOL, [F TYS SF TUN-ION], F WME SF TYS, [F BAL S Ger A PRU](nso), F NWY-NTS, F BAR SA STP, A RUH S Ger A MUN, A BEL SA RUH, F NTS-ENG Germany: A KIE SA MUN, [A MUN SA KIE], A PRU-BER, A LIV-PRU Russia: A MOS-LIV, A SEV-MOS, A PIE H Notes: Orders in () are bounced moves. Not much I can do about that. After this year, it looks like the Turks will be outta here. I'm not to sure what you're going to be doing this turn or what I can really do to help you, so I am hoping that the Turks are headed back for Con from the Aegean. I hope he doesn't head for the Ionian. Any suggestions on what we should do? A-G: It looks to me like you have things under control with the English (I hope!) I'm trying to keep the Russians occupied. Let me know if there is anythin that I can do give you a hand or if you see any way that we can clean up even better than we are doing now. A-R: Would you care to become my puppet while you still have a chance? A-T: Sorry I picked on you so much, but you started it!!! A-E: While we are thousands of miles apart, we still have a common enemy. You guessed it! The Russians! I realize that you would probably rather not have to deal with him right now, but the only place for him to go in the North is through Scandinavia and England. He could, of course, try walking through Germany, but then he'd have to go through me as well; and that would take a lot more out of him. I have him occupied in the South, but you need to take care of the North lest he take care of you! A-F: Comment ca-va? England -> Russia: I understand why you went for Norway - Germany said he'd support the move and then DID NOT. His attitude is "but this is gunboat, so what the heck." Simply stated that means he's in this totally for himself. Gunboat is difficult enough without people saying one thing and then doing another. If you are going to ally with this guy, good luck. He's already shown his untrustworthiness to you, just like he did to me. My desperate offer for your help still stands regardless of your Norway move. Given my position, you did what you thought you had to do - just like I did when I moved to the Barents and Finland. I hope that my disband of A Fin in the winter season proved to you that I do not want to cause you anymore trouble. The time is now. We need to join forces and put an end to this German perfidy. Your move to Norway kind of screwed up my plans to trap the German navy, but that's OK. We are just delayed a little. I am going to move F Nry- Ska next turn. (assuming I get into Norway this time around. I haven't assumed too well yet) If you could support it, perhaps we can disband that Ska fleet. Meanwhile, if you can, send an army or two westward. Moscow shouldn't be in any danger anymore. Again, my purpose in life now is to see Germany bite the dust. All I ask is that you spare me and help in the effort. Leaving Norway alone would also be nice. As stated previously, I will leave Sweden alone. I will leave all your supply centers alone for that matter. I still want to support you into Denmark once I get into Ska. I hope that we can work together, but it's up to you. I sure want to. England -> France: I am still in the channel, I know. I tried to get out last time, but Germany managed to screw that up again. The only damn thing I want to do with this fleet is support the Nth Sea fleet as it holds. I suspect that Germany is in the Bight now, and unless I support the Nth Sea from Eng and Nwg, he'll break through. As soon as I get a chance, I'll drop the channel fleet back in to London. He might bring 3 units to bear on Nth Sea now. I know Italy is still giving you trouble, but if there is anything you can do to help me against Germany, I'd really appreciate it. Believe me, that fleet may be in the channel, but it would be suicidal for it to move against you. I'll move it away as soon as I can. Promise. England -> France, Russia: OK. I've laid it on the line. I can hold off Germany for awhile, but if either one of you two help him, I'm dead. My goal is to see him rot. The biggest threat right now is the Italy/Germany/Austria alliance in the center of the board. If we form a three way alliance to try and ward them off, I will be indebted to both of you and will gladly be the weaker sister of the alliance. Besides, I'll be in the middle so you both can tear me apart later. Just let me live long enough to help you both against Germany. Please. All I want to do is live long enough to see him die - hopefully a nice painfully violent death. England -> Germany: /\ | | | | | | /\ /\ | | /\ ___ | | | | | | | | / / | | | | | | | |/ / | |_| |_| |_| / / | / \ / \ / (Note: I stole this artwork from another chapter's game. It summarizes my feelings pretty well) Take your embassy and ram it. Italy -> A-H ------------ I was orignally gonna move to the Aegean but I thought that you might desire to move Serbia -> Bulgaria since this seemed the better move to get Constant before the Ruskies got it, or to take it away from them in fall. I am moving one of my fleets back to the Tyrh in order to prevent the Turk from grabbing Tun or Nap. If he is not in the Ionian I might just move it there anyway since the French thing aint goin anywhere. IF your fleet is still in Bul AND the ruskie doesn't have Con THEN I will support you into Aeg (Gre) and you move Ser->Bul (this way we you should be able to get Con next year) IF you have slipped into Ukr (Rum->Ukr,Ser->Rum?) and there isn't a Turkish unit in the Ionian THEN support me into the Aeg (since you won't have the Ser unit to fill Bul) IF you are in the Aeg THEN I suggest going for Con w/ your F Aeg, I will follow you into the Aeg from Gre (if Ion is empty) THEN next year you could help me take Smyrna, or I might decide to go with Gre->Ion->EmE thus be in position in Fall04 to at least attack Smyrna and maybe break a support for your attack on Con. IF all of this is total nonsense or you have presented something more coherent then I will try to follow your suggestions, hopefully they will coincide. Italy -> France --------------- *shaking fist* I'll get you next time! Italy -> Germany ---------------- WHEN you want a hand versus the French... Italy->Turkey ------------- 2 fleets? bad! Turkey Press: Turkey --> A-H: How can I help you into Sevastapol? Turkey --> All: Can the U.S. come protect me and my oil pipeline? France -> England Not like you've nothing better to do, but if you're still stuck in the Channel, and I'm still stuck in Brest, and for some reason you decide that the North Sea is an un- important backwater (fat chance, huh) you might support me into the Mid-Atlantic. I'd be greatful. France -> Germany Sorry for being in Burgundy after you've been consistently reasonable, but it seems the best place from which to defend Marseilles. If I ever make it into the Mid-Atlantic against Italy's expected opposition and therefore no longer need the unit there, it'll leave. Besides, you've nothing to fear from me -- I have to order A Bur S A Mar every turn until the Italians give up on this war. Too bad I don't have three fleets and one army instead of vice versa. Now here's an idea (I must be crazy for suggesting this in a gunboat game, but it's either insanity or a slow decline to minor power status) -- *if* I get the Mid-Atlantic this turn and Marseilles is secure without a support from Burgundy, you could attack Burgundy from Belgium and Munich, and I could disband and build a fleet with which to counter Italy's third fleet. France -> Italy I sure hope you accidentally ran over some vacationing Austrians in Greece. France -> Austria Could you maybe lean on your friends in Rome to leave me alone? I think I proposed a fair ceasefire. I doubt I could give you any help immediately, but you never know when being able to call in a favor might be useful. France -> Russia I guess you're as likely to help me in the Western Med as I am to help you in the Balkans. Oh, well. France -> Turkey I guess you're as likely to help me in the Western Med as I am to help you in the Balkans. Oh, well. Austria: Hmmm so are you entertaining the thought of being attacked by the both of us? I guess you're doing pretty well at the moment, but only because I thought we'd work together. Turkey: Ok so I goofed...I'm withdrawing from Ankara and hopefully try to patch things up with you. England: Get out of Barents/Finland and then we'll talk. If you're still there I'll assume your intentions are dishonorable. Germany: Looks like I've got other problems to deal with. If England keeps pestering me though I'll definitely help you out. Germany -> All: As any of you who read the Fall '02 press might have noted, England seems to be somewhat unhappy with me. This is understandable, given that I took Belgium from him. The extreme nature of his accusations does, however, force a rebuttal on my part. Anyone who ignored his last press should probably ignore this too. Hopefully one of us (well, Ok, hopefully he:) ) will be elimnated before this flame war goes on much longer. I in no way betrayed him; I am not a "treacherous German". I gave him no reason to suppose I would accept his alliance, and in fact mocked his suggestion as it was clearly disadvantageous to me. True, the attack on Belgium was unprovoked, but no worse than his massive deployment into Scandinavia that had no other possible purpose than to capture Sweden and St.Petersburg. And yet he accuses me of putting him in a position of irritating Russia. My deployment into Scandinavia and appeals to France and Russia for an alliance were obvious and necessary; given my attack I can assume he would be my enemy, and the treated the situation accordingly. His use of (ACTUAL) before each communication was pointless, and either inflammatory or just plain stupid, as black press is not allowed in this game, and even if it were I could have written the exact same thing as he. The only supportive feeling I gained for him from the press is a desire not to see him be conquered, as his whining, subserviant offer of help against me has labeled him as a poor loser. Sorry. I guess that got a little harsher than I intended it to be. I apologize for the waste of bandwidth. Germany -> England: As you might have gathered from the above, I was unhappy with your press. I have once again failed entirely in my attempt to guess your actions, and regret to inform you that any agent of MI-6 found in Germany will be shot on sight. Congratulations (I think) on utterly confusing me and saving both the North Sea and Norway. If I haven't permanately offended you and you manage to hold on for another few turns, maybe we could call a truce -- competant allies are a nice thing to have. Germany -> France: I suppose its wishful thinking to suppose that fleet might get use against England, huh? Germany -> Austria: I'm a little disturbed by your presence in Bohemia. Ok, so maybe you didn't actually sign it, but a comment on your peaceful intent would have been nice. Germany -> Russia: I didn't bother supporting you 'cause its Sping and I figured you wouldn't want to leave St. Pete open. I'll do whatever yo-u suggest; otherwise I'll support St.Pete in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Don Daybell daybell@usc.edu GM, Passchendaele _________________________________________________________________________ Retreats are due ASAP.
