It turns out that our new Russian player is much more observant than all of us. I made a gaff in the supply centre count. England, not France owns Portugal, and thus, England should get one build, and France one, not 2. So the proper supply centre count is: ======================================================================= Supply Centre Count: Austria : VIE, BUD, TRI, SER, BUL, SMY, GRE, RUM, ANK, CON, WAR England : LIV, LON, EDI, NWY, SWE, HOL, BER, DEN, POR France : BRE, PAR, SPA, BEL, MUN, KIE Germany : Italy : NAP, TUN, VEN, ROM, MAR Russia : MOS, STP, SEV Turkey : ========================================================================= |00 |01 |02 |03 |04 | 05| 06| 07| 08| 09| ==================================================== Aus | 3 | 4 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 8| 9| 9| 10| 11| Eng | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 5 | 5| 7| 7| 8| 9| Fra | 3 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 7 | 6| 6| 6| 6| 6| Ger | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 5 | 5| 2| 1| 1| 0| Ita | 3 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 3| 4| 4| 4| 5| Rus | 4 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 5 | 4| 4| 5| 5| 3| Tur | 3 | 5 | 6 | 4 | 2 | 4| 2| 2| 0| 0| Austria: +1 England: +1 France : +1 (unit destroyed in Spring) Germany: -1 (unit destroyed in Spring Munich) Italy : +1 Russia : -2 (only disbands one since unit destroyed in spring Denmark) Turkey : 0 Now, what I shall do is take France's original unit build, and then accept a build from England. Austria, Russia, and Italy do not get a chance to make any changes. So, Ted, if you would kindly get me a build, then I will ask for new Spring 1910 orders. Thanks, and sorry for the goof up. And Thanks. Willis Marti FRANCE: First of all, I'd like to thank all of you for an interesting game. As France, I knew that I'd have to work with one of Germany, England or Italy. My original target was going to be Germany, but some aggressiveness on Italy's part had me changing my mind. Even with Italy probably heading east, I could not let a strong Mediterranean power develop while I was stuck in the North. So, Turkey and I decided to eliminate Italy's naval power. Austria was a willing ally. The attack went surprisingly well, and Italy was finished much much sooner than I expected. The Russian/Turkish front into Austria had to be stopped, as Germany/England and I had not really decided on who was going to beat up on whom. The Russian victories in the North made the decision. Sorry England, but Germany and I needed those centres to stop Russia/Turkey more than we needed your presence. After England was almost eliminated, Turkey and I conspired to stab our allies, (actually Turkey struck first). So then I struck into Munich. Joris then started proposing F/T draws. I kept vetoing them because I thought that I had a good chance to win it all. The last set of moves though, cost me, as Joris moved into a position to take Rome and Venice from me. In order to win, I needed them and then I would not have had to take St Petersburg. The big problem was the draw proposals. If Joris had not been making them, I might have snuck into Sweden, (which was supposed to be his in the draw agreement we made) and gotten to 18 before Joris rounded St Petersburg...But, ah well. Germany, it was a well played game, sorry for the stab. We could have won it, but most of my forces were North, and to re-direct them south would have taken too much time, and been fairly obvious. Again, thanks for a good game. I'd also like to thank Constantijn for the GMing and recruitment job he did for the game. Anand RUSSIA: The Russian Czar today issued the following statement regarding the end of the recent conflict: "As a rookie Czar, coming to the war after many years' absence from it, I made a fundamental mistake: I took Joris Pinkse at his word. Certainly I would recommend that other rulers avoid repeating the mistake, for not only did the Turk doublecross me, he went to great and elaborate pains to conceal his intentions, lying to my face right up to the moment of his treachery. It appears that most, if not all, of the players in this zine regard it as impossible to win without backstabbing at least one ally. I disagree, but the fact that most others seem to look at it that way would seem to make that a self-fulfilling prophecy. It seems to reduce the war a game of chicken between allies. Ah, well, live and learn. And I shall." -- "Never look back; something might be gaining on you." Satchel Paige Paul R. Botts email should be addressed to: prb@chinet.chi.il.us TURKEY: Yo folks, Thanks for making me have such a very pleasant game. I'm very glad I discovered Anand Sinha's true intentions before it was too late. To comment on the course of events in this game I should say, I haven't really stabbed anyone except for Paul Botts. I was lucky enough to be able to grab some Austrian supply centers after Paul and Sean had stabbed Roger.... Clearly, I was very fortunate that Sean attacked both Sean and Roger at the same time relying on Anand's trustworthiness (well....). This yielded me Naples and Tunis. Then for the sake of the game and to ease my irritation of not having been stabbed by Paul at the time he should have I thought the time had come to cooperate with Anand and Jeff. I still don't understand why Jeff refused to cooperate with me, but he'll sure have regretted it. He actually passed my last proposal to cooperate to Paul who sent it to Anand who sent it back to me (poor Willis).... Anyway: all thanks for playing.... Joris RUSSIA -> TURKEY: Well, if you're interested.... What disturbed me so much about your actions in Snikkel-2 was not so much your stabbing me per se, as that is part of the game, of course; rather, it was the fact that you put me through that wringer the week leading up to the stab. I feel like I invested a whole lot of time and energy working out the alliance at a key point, and we had a detailed dialogue going (something like a dozen messages back and forth), and then it turned out it was all just a con; you were simply lying to my face (figuratively). I suppose the distinction between that and simply attacking me is an arbitrary one, but one that I felt was a line that I personally wouldn't cross. Also, I notice your comment in your endgame statement that you were "frustrated (???) that Paul didn't stab me when I thought he should have". That's a strange thing to say, but in any case points out one of my disappointments with this zine: it is apparent that your approach, that stabbing one's ally is inevitable and the game can't be won without at least one good stab, is the norm here. From playing a fair amount of Dip in person, I have tended not to agree with that; I feel it is possible to win without stabbing anybody. However, I supoose the fact that most folks here look at it the way you do makes it a self-fulfilling prophecy, so I guess I will have to start taking a more mercenary approach in order to have a chance to win. That seems a shame, to me at least. -- "Never look back; something might be gaining on you." Satchel Paige Paul R. Botts email should be addressed to: prb@chinet.chi.il.us TURKEY -> RUSSIA: Yo Paul, well, I don't agree with you. In your opinion Diplomacy is a mere strategic game in which secret arrangements can be made in advance. The rules, however, explicitly state that noone is required to meet his "obligations" based on agreements made in the game. I agree with you that it's possible to win a game without stabbing anyone. The only fun remaining is then to convince others to help you right from the start; after spring '01 the die is cast and the game has become completely predictable upto some technicalities. Then you say, that I think it is necessary to stab my allies at least once in every game. I don't think that's necessary; I haven't stabbed Anand for example; the only reason I moves my units westward was to force him to accept the two-way-draw rather than going for a win. If I would have continued cooperating with you, however, you'd been the stronger of the two of us and I would not have gained any more than an 'S' in the list, would I ? Then: about lying in the face... Well, I use every hidden bad part of my character in the game, but I am allowed to.... that's what the game of Diplomacy is about. Mind you, I do _NOT_ use this kind of methods in reality.
