He asked me to re-cap the situation for him, so I sent him the current proposals on Thursday. The only proposal that seems to be acceptable to all is a 5-way draw. If any of you is in contact with Rik, could you please tell him that we are waiting to hear from him. If he does not respond, then I'll have to assume that he votes NO to these proposals, and we'll have to carry on with the game <sigh>. The Czar has | |also generously offered to help finance the Turkish naval | |building project, with a view towards constructing a new Turkish | |fleet in Smyrna this year. "Never again will English forces | |desecrate the sacred soil of Sevastopol!", the Czar is reported | |to have told his government. | | | |In other news, the Czar reportedly has assured the German | |government of his sincere wishes for continued friendship | |with the Kaiser. A mutual aid pact is believed to be under | |consideration. | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |GENOAN GOSSIP | | | | Genoa - The Mayor of Genoa announced that the spring tourist season was so | |successful this year, that many potential tourists could not even find | |decent lodgings, and thus could not stay. He is quoted as stating, "This | |is the first year ever where an entire army showed up. I was quite | |suprised. However, they had to be turned away because of lack of decent | |Hotel. Five million Frenchmen all wanting a four-star [hotel] and room | |service too, we just couldn't handle it." | | He went on further to say that he hoped tourism in the fall would drop off | |quickly. "Even no tourist would be fine. Besides, I think North Africa is | |the place to be this fall.", said one travel agent in the area. | | In other news, the Alpine building project has been complete, and all | |workers have left the area. It is now likely that no one will be in the | |area for several years now. At least we hope so! | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | NEW YORK TIMES | | Section B, page 11 | | England Applauded | | Little Italy - England was applauded today for its efforts in Scandinavia | |at the Anglo-Italian Friendship Dinner. Don Vito Mafirosi declared, "Da | |Englanda's and da Sicilians dona hava ding ta worry about so longs as dem | |Englandas stay in da north where dey belong." The evil Union of News Workers was on strike, thus | |preventing all news deliveries. The situation has now been rectified. | |Executions are pending. | | | | Language Convention Held | | Venice (VD) After sixteen days, the third annual language convention in | |Venice has closed. While the discussions mainly focused on the ease of | |teaching Arab populations the Italian language, the Minister of Lingual | |Affairs did make some rather interesting closing remarks. One particularly | |relevant excerpt from his speech is as follows: | | "...And thus we come to the issue of linguistics and politics. It should | |be realized that it is best for a nation to conquer another province or | |nation which already speaks the conquerers native language. The glorious | |re-unifications of Italy and Germany were made easy by this fact, but just | |look at all of the strife and dis-content in Austria right now. They speak | |a multitude of different languages there, including German in the north, | |Croatian, Czech, and Italian in the west, not to mention a slew of other | |languages. The moral here is 'That which is German should be German, and | |that which is Italian should be Italian'. Thank you." | | After the rousing speech the German delegate leaped up in applause. The | |Italian government has refused to comment beyond saying, "He's right, you | |know." | | | | Beer Shortage in France? | | Roma (IIN) Rumors are running rampant that the Beer supply in France is | |slowly drying up. The Italian government would not comment on the source | |of this rumor, but stated, "If the French don't rectify the situation soon, | |there could be trouble in France." | | | | PLOT REVEALED!!!!!!!! | | Vatican (PWI) Pope Sadis I today revealed the details behind the | |assassination of his late Holiness, Pope Leo XIII. He stated that what | |were at first beleived to be Turks were actually Croatian nationalists | |who both wanted to discredit the Turks and at the same time do grave harm | |to Italy. Further, his Holiness expressed concern over any diplomatic | |strife that this might of caused, and as a gesture of goodwill, he | |suggested that all Catholics face Mecca while praying. Finally, Pope Sadis | |I concluded by stating, "There can never be another Crusade. Not against | |Turkey that is." The Italian government confirmed the Pope's statements, | |but refused to comment further. | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Bozen (UPI): "The leader of the independence movement of Tyrol, Andreas Hofer,| |spoke about `a lucky day in Tyrolian history' when he heard about the German | |army moving into Tyrol. `No Italian government can be tolerated for Tyrol!'" | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Summer 1901 LE PARISIEN | | | | French-Italian project finished successfully | | | |Marseilles - As the commanding general of the 2. French army in Marseilles | |told the press yesterday, his troups had very successfully helped their | |Italian partner army from Venice to increase the height of the Piedmont Alps | |to nearly Himalaya heights. "I'm very proud of the work we have done and | |congratulate the Italian commander on our great cooperation" he said. He | |hoped the Italian side will agree that the Alps are high enough now so | |both sides can assign their armies to other purposes. "Next, my men will | |get holidays in Spain" he announced. | | | | Portugal in uprise - King assasinated! | | | |Lisboa - A bomb thrown by an anarchist killed king Galutro P. III. of Portugal| |yesterday when the king and his family watched the execution of several | |dissidents. At least 21 more people - including the assassin - were killed in | |the gigantic explosion. Political experts fear a civil war now as the | |political situation in Portugal has become unstable. | | | | Hercule Poirot imprisoned | | | |Brussels - The well-known leader of the French-speaking majority in Belgium, | |Hercule Poirot, together with over 200 other political active citizens (2nd | |class) has been imprisoned. "They may imprison me, torture me, even kill me, | |but the Belgian people will never surrender to the Dutch oppression!" Poirot | |shouted when at least 100 heavy-armed policemen forced their way into a | |gathering of his supporters. One of the leaders who escaped the raid and is | |now hiding told our reporter "Our only hope are our French brothers!". | | | | King Louis LXXIV. speaks to His people | | | |Paris - Our beloved king today performed one of His famous political speeches | |from the balcony of the Louvre. More than 200.000 citizens applauded frene- | |tically when He announced that "We will not tolerate the treatment of our | |brothers in Belgium any longer! We therefore ordered Our 1. army in Burgundy | |to free Our Belgian friends. We hope that Our neighbours in England and | |Germany support Us in Our will to bring peace to Belgium. Any cooperative | |move will be honored and reminded thankfully in times to come." With respect | |to the uprise in Portugal He spoke about letting the French fleet visit | |Lisboa "which, We are sure, will bring love and understanding back to | |Portugal". | | | | Great Britain and France sign agreement | | | |Bern - Unofficial sources claimed that in a secret meeting the British and | |French secretaries of state signed an agreement to keep the Channel free of | |fleets. There were also rumours that France had agreed to help England | |bringing the Dutch government back to senses next year, once France has | |succeeded in reorganizing the Belgian government. However, he has stated he is willing to | |give the Tsar benefit of the doubt, as it is quite possible that the spring | |thaw was a little late this year, thereby preventing our courier from reaching| |the Imperial Court at St. Petersburg. | | | |The Defense Minister added, "We hope our own actions and continuous statements| |released to the press indicate to our northern neighbors that the Ottoman | |Empire desires no war." | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Smyrna (AP): "Although all units stationed here had been grounded pending | |investigation, the Sultan has suspended that order in the name of national | |security. Despite continued negotiations between our respective envoys, the | |Sultan has ordered backup units in Smyrna to return to Black Sea headquarters | |and guard all naval sites from potential White Navy treachery." | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |The Daily Gossip 21 August 1901 | |QUEEN SIGHTED IN CAFE | | | |Her Late Majesty was seen this afternoon by Mrs. Gertrude Shrapnel of Slough | |yesterday afternoon, at least a full day after her official death, in a | |street-side cafe in London's East End. "I was just drinking my coffee, and | |there she was!" exclaimed Mrs. Shrapnel. Her Majesty has been sighted at | |various points throughout the south of England as well as Paris, | |Baden-Baden and 6, West Virginia, where Joe Anheuser-Busch, a used | |encyclopaedia salesman, spotted her picking up some farm implements. | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Sofia (AP): "After a month of unrest, events have subsided here and relative | |calm has been restored to the region. Several divisions have been ordered to | |investigate reported conflicts on the Greek border. Similar activity occurs in| |Bucharest, to the north. Although it is logistically possible for Turkish | |peacekeeping forces to assist the Tsar's joint land-sea operation, our field | |commanders report that due to poor communications, the Tsar was forced to act | |on his own. | | | |The Porte wishes to reassure St. Petersburg that their actions in Romania are | |not viewed with hostile intent by Turkey." | ================================================================================ Date: Wed, 17 Oct 90 22:43:47 EDT Circumstances, circumstances... In DENMARK today, envoys from the Great German Empire have arrived and | |express their willingness to help protect our people from possible invasion. | |One German leader made comments about a British paper that was located. The people of Munich have been | | heard as stating, "Ve fear not! Our Kaiser will send reinforcements | | and he assures us that if any advancement is made, retaliation | | will be hard and swift." Needless to say it is actually in Bot, as of the start of this turn... Note: When moving F Con-Bul (or Por-Spa or Mid-Spa) DON'T FORGET TO SPECIFY THE COAST! If you don't it is an ambiguous move and so the fleet holds. There are no retreats, so the Autumn turn will be strictly for press, due next Monday. Winter builds and press are due Thursday the 25th. As usual, tell me about any errors I have made. Version: OCT90-01 From: pinkse@vax.lse.ac.uk To: cwekx@kub.nl Date: Mon, 15 OCT 90 11:28:23 BST From: CBS%UK.AC.EARN-RELAY::IE.UCC.IRUCCVAX::CSVAX1::J_OREGAN To: PINKSE Date: Mon, 15 Oct 90 10:54 GMT Dear Joris, What I had in mind wasn't for jerks - all I was trying to do was to get seven players together who all liked each other and could play properly. I have come to the conclusion that there is no such set of people in existance. I have turned my attention instead towards obtaining a set of rules for Diplo- macy variant, Mercator. It is for 10+ players, has a world map and reformed convoying rules. It is allegedly one of the best variants ever and can even be more enjoyable than the real thing. Once I get the rules (via my brother) I will send a copy of them to Ken Lowe and ask him to implement the game on the Adjudicator. If you can find me seven players who all get on well with each other and who hold no petty grudges for things that happened in other games, I would consider being GM, my workload this year permitting. However, things are still settling down here and I still don't know how heavy that workload will be as yet. When I have a better indication of how much is expected of me, I will let you know my decision, yours sincerely, John. [...] From: pl436000@brownvm.bitnet "Jamie" To: cwekx@htikub5.bitnet Date: Tue, 16 Oct 90 12:26:51 EDT Anand tells me that you are organizing a game (or thinking of it) of master stabbers. I am flattered to be under consideration. I have a couple of suggestions. One, Danny Loeb is a grandmaster. And Ken Lowe is a force to be reckoned with, too. Two, I bet we could set it up on JUDGE, and thus we wouldn't need a separate GM. I'll ask Ken about it if you want. I'm playing too many games now, but this one sounds too good to pass up! Someone has requested that the game be a "blind" variant, in which you do not see the entire board. We can play it blind or regular, majority rules. Since there are 10 people on that list, and only 7 can play, the first 6 other people to contact me (I have contacted myself :), will be able to play. This could truly go down as the most deceptive, treacherous game of all time. I've never GMed a game, so I don't have an idea of what it actually entails in terms of time, but I guess I could give it a try. -- "Never look back; something might be gaining on you." So please cast your votes in favour of a blind game. Thank you. (Believe it or not, there were no Dip games there that I could get into. They were afraid of the power of the Pope! Actually, the only game I saw of Dip happened at the same time I was running Clay-O-Rama, another game of great tactical and diplomatic skill. I'm not all that upset, I won best gamemaster in miniatures for the year overall from playing with Play-Doh.) I'm not too certain if the other things I did would interest the Zine. (Ick! ROLE PLAYING GAMES!!!) If you still wish I'm sure I can dig something up for you. As for you being my son, well, you steal my formats, I steal yours... :) Frank.
