So far we have had: A win A/E/F A/E/F/I A/E/F/I/R And further comments: Ted will support any draw in which he is included (since I've changed NVR==No) Douglas has proposed the A/E/F draw and the 5-way. Constantijn proposed A win and/or he will support any draw in which he is included. Gene has said that he will vote Yes to any draw proposals. We are basically getting the consensus that only the following two proposals, maybe only one proposal is acceptable: A/E/F (except Italy wants in on the draw) A/E/F/I/R (still waiting for another vote) Anand Summer '08 of the game BERLIN (BNC number 1989KQ) (GM is cwekx@htikub5.bitnet/Constantijn Wekx) Austria : elliott@bunker.uucp/Elliott Kleinrock England : sinhaa@mcmaster.bitnet/Anand Sinha France : daybell@aludra.usc.edu/Donald Daybell Germany : jf5irhmc@miamiu.bitnet/Jim Feldhouse Italy : fnd@beach.cis.ufl.edu/Frank di Vincenzo Russia : adam@efi.com/Adam Stock Turkey : fqoj@cornella.bitnet/Roger Jagoda Date: 12-OCT-1990 10:58:50.89 MET Yo folks, I haven't received the Austrian Summer retreat yet. To: _all_eastern_powers_ For shame! No press in Winter '02?! You going to let the Western weenies outdo us? To: _england_ It makes me nervous when you encourage France to conduct Mediterranean "operations". Usually I cure this type of nervousness by conducting "operations" of my own. To: _france_ I hope you're not going to heed English cries for intervention in the Med. As I said in my previous press, defensive support is one matter, offensive moves quite another. I sincerely hope I am not compelled to engage in the latter. To: _germany_ Glad to see you're coming to terms with the Tsar. How can A Vienna be most effectively used in your defense? To: _italy_ If France attacks you, I'll back you to the hilt. But even if she doesn't, I hope it's clear that we must support Germany. If Germany goes down, it means French navies in the Med and Anglo-French forces pouring down from the north. And England has already demonstrated her hostile intent. Can France be far behind? Let me know what your plans are for the two armies east of Switzerland, and for any naval operations in the Eastern Med. We must work together to effect the most power. To: _russia_ This turn: Gal-Rum. Takes a supply center, and makes you less nervous about the border. Next turn: Rum-Bul. Feel free to follow in my tracks. You may wish to consider helping Germany with A War; the situation in the South is too bottled up for it to be of any use. Hopefully some 1902 builds will cure that problem... To: _turkey_ Hope you guessed wrong in the Balkans -- I need a vacation too! :-) And remember, I'm going for extra supply centers -- not for your destruction. ---------- The Times: ---------- <London, Spring 1902> The Minister of War announced a surprising addendum to British foreign policy with respect to the French. The Minister emphasized British devotion to the French cause. "Nevertheless, a faction of the Loyal Opposition wishes to ensure the safety of British territories. An ambassador is being sent to Paris to explore the possibility of adding the North Atlantic, the North Sea, and Belgium to the British-French demilitarized zone". (London, Spring 1902) To the powerful French ::: I decided to avoid the move to Holland this season, if only because we talked about it...It's probably easiest for us to support our own forces, and occasionally take random stabs at supporting each other. Hopefully, my move to Helgoland caught the Germans off guard. But with only two armies to your four, I think you'll be able to bash your way in while I occupy his fleets. We'd be obliged if your fleets would stay out of the MAO without prior consultations... Vive la France! vive les Allies! and if we're the junior partner, c'est la vie. To the Germans ::: Well. Naval action in the North. What fun. I think you might have considered building A Mun instead...It's France's (and Italy's?) armies that are going to crush you, not my fleets. But we shall see. To the Russians ::: Please note that we did not take advantage of your misfourtunes to stab you in the back..or in the front, or in the sides, or anywhere else. We'd like to concentrate our attention on the Germans, and we would appreciate your cooperation. If Fleet Sweden would support Fleet Norway to the Skag in the fall, it will help (and it will get Fleet Norway away from St. Pete.) To the Turkish Menace ::: Hah! Italian and Turkish fleets will soon put an end to your mad schemes. Begone, sick man of Europe! And is it true what they say about harem girls?. To Austria ::: Please continue your threats against France and England. They give our Fleet Street tabloids something to write about. To Italy ::: Hmm. I'd be nervous as Austria.... -------------- La Parisienne: -------------- (Paris, spring 1902) The President had several meetings with foreign diplomats. They all agreed to alter the format of French press this season, as a precautionary measure against infiltrators. All leaders are advised of the possibility of future changes, as necessary. The President feels it is vitally important that the other Great Powers receive accurate information from a reliable source. The following information summarizes the important results: England -> Please take note that I did not build a fleet in Brest, and that I ordered A Bel to support A Edi-Hol, as I indicated I would. This should prove my willingness to cooperate with you. I will assume that someone else was responsible for the pro-German press in winter 1901. Hopefully, you've taken Holland, and we can begin trading Dutch pretzels for Belgian waffles. You should have Denmark by fall, if all goes well. Let me know if any supporting actions are required, and I'll do my best to help out. Farewell for now, most noble English allies, and God speed in our quest to stamp out German oppression! Germany -> Yes, we are enjoying Belgium. Hope you're enjoying Denmark. Italy -> I sincerely hope we can honor our agreement in the Med. We both have other areas to attend to. It sounds like Austria is willing to cooperate with you to control the impending Turkish naval menace. I encourage you to accept the aid from the Kaiser, and keep the fishing Sultan under control. I also request that you not interfere on Germany's behalf. Best of luck! Russia -> Best of luck in the South. With Austria's help, you should do OK. Be wary of Austria's move to Rumania, however; even if he intends to be out of there in fall, if the move fails, he stays there, gets another build, and is in an excellent position to move against you. I wouldn't think too seriously about trusting the German proposals regarding Scandinavia and Norway. He has not given you any reason to trust him yet, and he has given you several reasons not to. Consider instead the possibility of amicably dividing Scandinavia with England, so you can concentrate your forces down South, where they are needed. ------------- Berlin Bugle: ------------- All of my press is forged. ------------- Roman Herald: ------------- To Austria: Winter in the alps is too cold for General Linguini, so he's decided to go home to Venice. The Tyrolian mountain goats were not to his liking. To France: Same news as before. To England: Just what is it that the ArchBishop of Canturbury doesn't like about Pope Pompous, hmmm? To everyone else: I hope you had a pleasant Christmas. ---------------- Ankara Bulletin: ---------------- Russia: This is the only press I am writing this time, someone is getting too clever at sowing dissent with off color press. It is not in the regular format this time - I'm hoping that will allow you to determine its legitamacy since no one else could predict the break in style. It appears that England and France can carve Germany up quite quickly. Italy may support Germany to slow down the inevitable conflict with France, or may decide to grab a center or two for herself. Either way Italian forces will not provide a check to Austrian power unless she chooses to stab Austria right now. I wanted to see you weak at the start of the game, to maintain a balance of power between you, Austria and myself. But you are dangerously weak now and Austria is too strong to contain on my own. You remember that Austria offered to help Italy into Greece and then took it herself to 'protect' it from me; that she bumped me out of Rumania so I could not hurt you - now she is suggesting that she take Rumania so she can later give it back as she moves into Bulgaria. Do you really think you would ever see it happen? If we waste our strength on each other, neither will survive long enough to see the Eng/Fre threat grow important enough to check Austria from the north. You may decide to throw in with Austria at this point - but what will you do when Italy and France are deadlocked and you face England in the north and Austria in the south? The two of them could split you between them with no threat to themselves. Together we should be able to just offset Austria long enough for the Western threat bring us to a reasonable balance. I will start playing that way and hope you will too. I will begin this turn supporting your fleet into Rumania. I will continue providing support for you as requested or as seems reasonable. Hope you get into Rumania or block Austria out of there. I will try to occupy the Black Sea to support you again from there. My army in Armenia will stay in place until you get a build or two and then pull back. ------------ GM's Corner: ------------ Well, the 'faster moves' vote failed, with 3 YES votes and 4 abstentions. So deadlines stay at one season per week, with deadlines of Monday mornings (main moves) and wednesday mornings (adjustments). One player will be out of town for a fortnight starting next week; so the game will miss at least one deadline. I think I am correct in stating that so far everyone has missed at least one deadline, and so I have been trying to think up some cruel and unusual punishments to deter such offenders. Starting from today, the next offence will result in a Max Bygraves album being sent to the perpetrator's home. Second and third-time offenders will receive, respectively, a Julio Iglesias album and a signed photo of Mrs Thatcher. No-one is expected to survive to be a fourth-time offender. There are no retreats this season. The next deadline is Monday 15th Oct (that's 1990 :-). "Lollipop Licks Africans" [Tunis, Italy] - The good ship Lollipop arrived in Tunis last month and immediately began distributing candy to the locals as a token of friendship. The Lollipop also carried a supply of Holy Objects to be distributed to such local citizens as chose to convert to Catholicism. The Pope, arriving with the Lollipop, claimed that each specially blessed cross-shaped "Holy Toothbrush," when used in the Holy Ritual described in the instructions (included), would ward off the evil demons soon to visit the mouths of the citizens of the small country. It was, in fact, the Pope's desire to help fight these demons that had brought him to these shores. Many locals were, at first, hesitant to believe that the Toothbrushes could be objects of spiritual power as they contained not the smallest amount of Jackal dung or serpent skin. However, when the demons arrived in force a week ago, as predicted by the Pope, the rate of requests for Conversion reached unprecedented levels. Today, when the demons appeared in the mouth of one of the members of the royal family, Catholicism was adopted as the new official religion. Shortly after this announcement, the Pope received a vision from God that he could only share with the Tunisian royal family. In other news, a few hours later, Tunisia requested, and was granted, annexation by the Kingdom of Italy. "Concert Date Announced" [Trieste] -Though there is still some question as to whether a scheduling conflict may arise, tickets went on sale Wednesday for the Winter Concert of the Italian Bagpipe Brigade. The Brigade, known throughout the world as the highest quality Scottish folk0 music outside of the British Isles and the forerunner in modern and Avante Garde bagpipe composition, has honored our fair city by scheduling their concert in our opera house. The concert is scheduled to feature traditional ballads as well as some original works by Italian composers for the bagpipe and an adaption of an operetta (to be announced) to the bagpipe. It is rumored that some members of the Italian royal family may perform and perhaps even solo in the final piece. "We'll send lots of workers to help!" he | |said. However, rumors were spread that the Ministry of Defense is involved | |because some official was heared to speak about "a peaceful bounce in | |Piedmont" which nobody understood, as it seemed to be some sort of secret | |military code. | | | | King Louis LXXIV. sends note to British Queen | | | |Paris - In a telegram our beloved king today congratulated His long-distance- | |relative in England (she happens to be the niece of the brother-in-law of the | |aunt of the sister-in-law of the grandmother of the daughter-in-law of our | |beloved king) on her good health and reassured her of France's "peaceful and | |cooperative" way of thinking. | | | | Dutch oppress French-speaking majority in Belgium | | | |Brussels - The Dutch-controlled Belgian government today showed its real ugly | |face by preparing a law which makes all French-speaking inhabitants of Belgium| |second-class citizens and allows only first-class citizens (those who speak | |Dutch) to official positions. Hercule Poirot, speaker of the French-speaking | |majority, told on a press conference yesterday "that we hope our brethren in | |France will help us in our fight against this law!". The French government did| |not comment on whether the French army ordered to exercise in Burgundy may | |be ordered to bring peace and order back to Belgium. | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Ankara (UPI): "The Sultan's fleet sails today from its Black Sea base to the | |Aegean, and its ultimate destination in 1903, the Ionian Sea, for joint | |maneuvers with the French Fleet. Although no word has been received from the | |St. Petersburg envoy, it is hoped that the White Navy will not sail into the | |Black Sea. The Defense Minister had formally proposed joint operations with | |the Tsar, but due to mishaps with the diplomatic courier, the Tsar never | |received the message. | | | |Therefore, the Defense Minister is using this event as an opportunity to | |reiterate his proposal to the Tsar. He added, `We hope our commitment to peace| |and non-aggression is evident in our choice to restrict our own fleets to the | |Turkish coast.'" | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Damasq (AP): "In response to the insurrection and strife in Tunisia, local | |Moslem authorities here at the Sultan's southern outpost have voluntarily gone| |on alert, in preparation for a repeat of the Crusades. Meanwhile, authorities| |in Istanbul frantically continue negotiations with the Roman leadership in | |hopes of preventing war." | | | |In a statement released to the press several hours ago, the Porte denied any | |complicity in an attempt on the Pope's life last month. The Porte extends its| |deepest regrets at the incident. | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Istanbul (AP): "In light of the continued unrest in neighboring Bulgaria, the| |Sultan has ordered Turkish forces into Sofia to assist local authorities in | |maintaining order. The Foreign Minister deeply hopes that our Habsburg friends| |do not misconstrue this action as hostile." | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Smyrna (AP): "Following an erroneous report that the Sultan's fleet was | |stationed here, the Defense Minister has ordered a quarantine of all military | |forces until the leak is detected. Though it is hardly believed that anyone | |took the report to be of any consequence, the military is not taking any | |chances. It is unknown whether a desire to start a Mediterranean/Aegean base | |here was in the works or not. In the meantime, the primary commander here has| |been ordered to assist in diplomatic overtures toward the Tsar." | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |The Daily Mail - London, England | |February 26, 1901 | | | |In an offical announcement earlier this week the Navy declares their | |absolute command in the North Sea region. This relatively strong | |statement is obviously a reaction to the excessive military actions | |of our neighbours. | |The Admiral himself comments: | |"We will never accept either German or French fleets in the neighbourhood | |of the North Sea. We must, however, seek a political solution. It has been | |said that the Russian fleet is planning to invade Sweden. As a peaceloving | |country, we hate to see this, but we hope that Germany will stop this | |apparently barbaric action." | |In this announcement, the government also denies that the Queen has been | |assassinated and replaced by a puppet. The comment from The Daily Gossip | |that "the Queen looked rather like a puppet when she waved to the people | |from the Balcony", should, according to the announcement be just rubbish. | |Just because the Queen needs help to stand does not mean that they move her. | ================================================================================ Publisher comments: Sweet's Cosy Korner: From: j_oregan%csvax1@iruccvax.ucc.ie "John O'Regan" To: SinhaA@McMaster.BITNET, CWekx@KUB.NL, istjwf@ASUACAD.BITNET, cap@KUB.NL, KJohnsto@ESOC.BITNET, Lisa@Bklyn.BITNET, pshs342@utxvm.BITNET Date: Thu, 27 Sep 90 20:53 GMT Hello All, Just thought I'd dash off a quick note to inform you all that it's now official - I'm a BA! Results were released today and I passed economics. Yes! I'm free of it forever! No more curves, matrices, utils, contradictory laws and best of all, no more Keynes. My next step is to improve the computer studies half of my degree which will take a year and depending on how well I do in that, I will then decide whether or not to do a Master's degree. Some of you are doing Master's/PhD's, are they worth it? I'm sorry for not getting in touch with most of you as often as I should. I have no excuse save that I'm a lazy bastard. I hope you are all well and I intend to contact every one of you seperately in the not-too-distant future. Until then, the best of luck, yours sincerely, John. How do you like London? >Horrible, isn't it? Tell me all about your new colleagues, what you're doing >exactly, and what your accomadation is like - no roommates I hope! London would've been great if the pubs wouldn't close so early.... This really is inhumane! Well, I've met only one of my roommates (at LSE that is) yet and she is some - well, overaged is not a nice word, is it? - not very young, yet very friendly PhD student (in Statistics as well). At the moment I'm typing this letter behind some 1980-IBM-XT with CGA- colour screen (ouch!), but that's probably not the answer you wanted. Well, in fact I've just started a PhD in Statistics (Econometrics actually). No obligations with respect to courses and examinations anymore fortunately.... I will attend some courses, though but no examinations if not absolutely necessary.... > Anyway, just in case you haven't forwarded all your mail and Sweet hasn't >told you (he's still mad at me, I think), I passed my economics. I'm finished >with it for good and I'm a BA! That and two quid will buy me lunch at McDonalds. >But now I can concentrate on what I really wanted to do in the first place - >computers. So, I'll be knocking around here for another year or three. Write to >me soon and try not to breathe too much of that London air - you don't know >where it's been! Well, I've forwarded all my mail to Constantijn, who _DID_ tell me you passed your economics exam. Congrats. Anyway, once you've obtained your MSc you'll be able to buy lunch at McDonald's for 3 quid... (inflation, remember?)... Why are you staying in that hole in the bottom (hehehehe) of Ireland? In London you don't know where the air's been, but in Cork you do and in this specific case that's worse.... (you bunch of farts! ;)) Oh, right Constantijn seemed slightly surprised by your move, indeed.... I for one don't understand you either.... You haven't become overconfident now you've passed that darned economics exam, have you? Oh, right I should've known... You've always been overconfident...; that's why you never take chances in dippy, right? Oh, mean me.... See you! > Yours sincerely, > John. I am supposedly GM'ing a standard version of Diplomacy. However. I have but four of the nations responding.. So... If anyone would like to join in a completely new (Spring01) game as the German, Austrian, or English Player PLEASE PLEASE get in touch with me... It looks like a weekly deadline game, and it is called Black October. (if you are already playing one of the nations you may NOT have another too!!) I would love to get this game off the ground, so please somebody decide that they have a little time to spare... -john murphy (murphyjoh@urvax.urich.edu) From: cwekx@htikub5.bitnet To: eric_s_klien@cup.portal.com Date: 10-OCT-1990 16:05:53.18 MET Yo Eric, I asked you to provide me with a few new games for Chapter Three a while ago, but I haven't received your reply so far. I have 7 games in Chapter now (were 8 games before I asked ya) and Dawn Patrol is about to end, while Captain Caveman has already ended (in a French win). So there will be 5 games left for me. That's ok, but I could take two or three more. What about the games which just started? Goodbye Blue Sky, Def Con 5 and King's Gambit for instance? What about moving them to my Chapter? I think Chapter One could also use a couple of more games (3 games left). It's also very strange to see the frequency of Chapters being published at rec.games.pbm. I have got the impression that you, me and Anand are the only folks who are taking things seriously. What happened to the other folks? I haven't seen issues of their Chapter lately! Could you send me a copy of your game list as soon as you have updated yours? I could use them for updating my ongoing games list. Another thing. I noticed that you have added game Zulu (ran at the Ken's Diplomacy Adj) to your EP-list. Why? Only because you want Jamie to play in your WIN90 game? Come on... Your sincerely, Constantijn From: eric_s_klien@cup.portal.com To: cwekx@htikub5.bitnet Date: Thu, 11 Oct 90 10:48:08 PDT I just got the Captain Caveman endgame summary. That was prompt. Here are some more games for your chapter: #72 CULLODEN (GM is rmal@cernvax.cern.ch/Richard Lucock) Gunboat game. #73 GANDALF'S REVENGE (GM is jjt@naucse.cse.nau.edu/John Theisen) #79 GOODBYE BLUE SKY (GM is death@csc.waterloo.edu/Trevor Green) Gunboat game. Yes, I am about to give Chapter One some more games. I am waiting for the new publisher of that chapter to publish his first issue first. I agree that I have problems with chapter publishers, feel free to send the bums e-mail about it or try to find some reliable people who can take over these chapters. "Could you send me a copy of your game list as soon as you have updated yours? I could use them for updating my ongoing games list." I am about to do an update, I will publish this update in my zine. "Another thing. I noticed that you have added game Zulu (ran at the Ken's Diplomacy Adj) to your EP-list. Why?" Because the game was run with no NMRs. Any game run this way qualifies to be in my zine.
