Le Journal au jour de Paris. It was last reported here that our new President is being pressured to invade Italy, by our Nobility. Sources in Italy report that French Fleets are now in position to enforce a total naval blockade of the Italian peninsula. Other reports say that French troops on the outskirts of Venice watched awestruck, as a new Turkish secret weapon destroyed the Austrian defences in Venice and forcedthem to retreat to Tyrolia. When asked if an invasion of a major Italian centre is immenent, the President would offer no comment. Admiral Sarah Sinha sailed with the 5th English Fleet out of Liverpool, headed for the North Atlantic Ocean. From there, she will transfer to one of the other Fleets in the area. Which one was not disclosed, as currently, she is the only child of the King, and thus the heir to the throne. As the 5th fleet set sail her final comments were, "We shall bring victory to our glorious nation! Britain will once again be whole! Excalibur will be victorious!". King Anand also left England, as he moved to lead the English armies in the Lowlands. Moscow: The Tsar was in a state of rage when he discovered that the Austrians had not followed orders. "How dare they! They must move into Silesia! Or I will march on Constatinople!!" When told that Constantinople was in Turkey, the Tsar's only response was "Freudian slip". The Weekly World News, Vatican Edition. (Mercy is a Wonderful Virtue.) POPE VISITS TROUBLED GREECE (Athens) Pope Franjesco I landed (or attempted to, at least) in the troubled capital of Greece today to attempt to bring an end to the much-heated "Beer and Baklava" war that has ripped apart the countryside. The Pope made the decision to visit the region after a successful takeover by the Ayatollah Jim-Bob of the Fundamental Orthodox Right-to-Lifer Jihad Such-and-such. The Pope's current attempt for peace has been to attempt to change the diets of the Greeks to wine (Italian, of course) and pasta. He even agreed to set up a "special" trade agreement between the two nations for these items should the new diet come to order. AMBASSADOR SURVIVES TERRORIST ATTACK (Constantinople) Archbishop Francisco Fettucini, the current Ambassador to Turkey, barely survived an attempt on his life Friday when one of his maids attempted to kill him in bed. The event took place about 6pm when, while the Archbishop was trying to sleep, his Arab maid, dressed in a teddy, tried to jump him with a knife. There has been no confirmation of the presence of a box of Trojans and a bottle of champagne at the crime scene. NEW FRENCH AMBASSADOR PROVIDES BETTER LINK WITH ROME AND PARIS (Vatican City) The New French Ambassador to Italy has provided a much improved communication link between the two nations Thursday. The heralded waterloo.edu communications systems went on-line immediately and worked like a charm. The Pope shared a few comments with the French President about joint concerns on their "back doors" and decided to keep up good relationships. FIRST ARMY TO GREET NEW AUSTRIAN KAISER (Trieste) The Holy First Army, stationed out of Venice, was sent to the Austrian port city of Trieste today to greet the new Kaiser of Austria. They brought with them word from Pope Franjesco I that he will do "whatever is necessary" to be certain of stability in the region and be certain that Austria remains friendly to their western neighbor. The Kaiser appeared skeptical. AND NOW, A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR: Italy -> F Smyrna: Buy some Right Guard for crissakes!!! From our Illustrious Editor: Pope Franjesco I, Helm's Deep, #57. [Rumania] - Tired of lounging around on the shore and envious of all the fun the Turks seemed to be having in their bathtub, the Russian speed boat team struck back out for the high sea today. They were last seem doing joyful loops around the Black Sea. Admiral Kaparov was heard to have said, "How dare these Turks use our race course as a mere bath!!" He was quick to point out, however, that his troops posed no threat to the Turks as he would be reluctant to put ashore again. [Ukraine] - The Ukrainian border patrol, having had no luck with manuevers in Galicia, today set off for Rumania. General Mayhem said, "With our new found peace with the Austrians, we are looking to assist our brothers in Serbia." [Moscow] - In a continued attempt to get rid of "those pesky Germans", the second Moscow army struck out for the front today. When asked what he thought the Germans would be up to, Gerneral Unrest replied, "Who can fathom these people, they throw themselves against us like so many lemming all the while the English march against them to distribute bad cooking and warm beer." We will bring our lemmings with us, where there will be plenty of grazing land. Are you still writing this?....Uh I guess that's all' The Kaiser also sends his greetings to the Princess of England and hopes that she will be able to travel unvexed to the sea (Does Madrid have port facilities?) The Empire Today "Shah Sulks" The Shah remains in a funk after the events of last season, and has not emerged from his harem to make any statements at all for the past 5 months. However, the Shah's press secretary was dispatched to speak to members of the press and he was quoted as saying "The Shah has no comment at all on the events of the Spring and has decided to take his army and go home. I however, would like to express my overall disdain for the Italians and Russians who would stoop so low as to steal gags from me." "Turkish Speedboat Team puts on Skiing Demonstration" The Turkish speedboat team one-upped the Russian speedboat team by putting on a Skiing demonstration in cooperation with the army. Russian soldiers flocked to the seashore in droves to watch the event which featured Corporal Mohommed Abdulazaerat doing a triple-back-flip jump with a full twist. "Peace at hand!" The Shah emerged from his sulking phase today to announce that he wasn't actually sulking at all but really in high level negotiations with the Italian Ambassador. The pair emerged from the chambers of the Royal Harem today, apparently exausted from the intensive rounds of negotiations, to announce the terms of the agreement. Ayatollah Joe-Bob of the Reformed Conservative, Born-Again, Orthodox, Shiite Moslem Right-to-life Jihad has agreed to become a Presbyterian, the underarm brigade will be disbanded, the Turkish people will be instructed not to make any more attempts on the Italian Ambassador's life, the Mafia hit on Shiek Abdul will be recinded, and the line of death will be moved back to encompass the Western borders of the Eastern Med, the Aegean, and Bulgaria. [Black Sea] In an attempt to drive the Turks out of the Black Sea and avoid excessive water polution, the Russian speed boat team tried to set ashore at Ankara today. In a prepared statement Admiral Carparov said, "We were receiving complaints from Rumanian fisherman that all the fish were dieing and felt we had to do something." [Warsaw] The brave citizens of Warsaw continue to hold out against the mystifying Germans. "Why they continue to beat their heads against out defenses is beyond me.", said General Election. -Sean Fitts The Weekly World News, Vatican Edition. (When All Else Fails, Call For a Jihad. -Iranian Proverb.) POPE REFUSES GUEST Although Pope Franjesco I is well known for inviting the daughters of foreign leaders to the Vatican on occasion he has refused a visa to the daughter of the new King of England, Anand Sinhaa. This has come about since Sinhaa's daughter also wanted visa for about 2000 British Naval personnel. "Besides," the Pope exclaimed, "she's not even three years old yet. I'm surprised that father of hers would even put her in charge of the royal rubber-ducky! Even I... er, the immigration council, has an age limit." The Pope did, however, say that in his opinion Admiral Sinhaa gave an excellent speech considering her age. MILITARY UNITS GIVEN WEEKEND PASSES (Trieste) The Holy First and Second Armies, as well as the Holy Second Fleet, were given the weekend off for the first time in two and a half years. The troops were reported to take their vacation in the lovely port of Trieste. However, due to certain regulations, the troops were required to carry their firearms with them. Melbourne: The former Queen of Australia, Victoria, came in second in the Australian open yesterday. She did quite well for a woman of her advancing years. She lost 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 to Prissy Evert. Moscow: The Assistant to the Czar, Sean Fitts, was carted away in a rubber truck, as a result of endless head bashing regarding the German-English alliance that has cost him Warsaw and Sweden. England: Builds a fleet in London. The next phase of aust will be Movement for Spring of 1902. The deadline for orders will be Wed Sep 26 23:30:00 European Summer Time. Here is your GM back to you with an analysis of the first year of the game Austerlitz with the help of the Player's guide to Diplomacy. Let's look at each countries opening at what the guide had to say about it: Austria: Army Budapest -> Rumania. (*bounce*) Austria: Army Vienna -> Trieste. Austria: Fleet Trieste -> Adriatic Sea. This is a variant of opening 3 except that the fleet is sent to sea instead of to Albania. This makes the opening more friendly to Turkey, and opens a side attack on Italy. Opening 3: "This peculiar opening can be used when Austria is allied with Turkey, Italy is neutral, and the main target is Russia. One of the allies should get Rumania (or least it will be denied to Russia). A Tri-Ser and F Alb-Gre in Fall 1901 yield two builds for Austria. Greece, would eventually be transferred to Turkey when Austria became compensated elsewhere for its loss." By Fall, Austria is betrayed by Turkey, and can do little to enable himself to capture even one supply center. By mistrusting his only one true ally (Italy), he is now in a very difficult situation. England: Army Liverpool -> Wales. England: Fleet Edinburgh -> North Sea. England: Fleet London -> English Channel. Opening 2: "This is blatantly anti-French. The threat is A Wal-Bre, F Eng C A Wal-Bre. [England in fact made this move successfully in the Fall.] If France moved F Bre-Mid, she is probably faced with the choice of giving up either Spain or Portugal in order to protect Brest. England may also allow her to slip back in the home center while convoying the army to Belgium instead. Meanwhile, F Nth can either support the army into Belgium or take Norway. It is pretty silly for England to pass up the Norwegian center. [Nor did he.]" The English builds (F Edi, F Lon) are a little suprising. After a French offensive, a build in Liverpool seems to be called for. England may be changing direction? Perhaps he got a tip about the upcoming Russia build? France: Army Marseilles SUPPORT Army Paris -> Burgundy. France: Army Paris -> Burgundy. France: Fleet Brest -> Picardy. Opening 2: "This is a more powerful defense against Germany [than (1a) F Bre-Mid, A Mar-Spa, A Par-Bur"] because A Par-Bur always goes. France can thus be assured of Spain and Portugal no matter what Italy does. However, her fleet is relegated to a weaker position in Portugal. Munich and Belgium are also threatened." As it turns out, Germany continued to stay neutral during the fall. France useless expended support attack Belgium unopposed. He obviously was hoping England would attempt to take Belgium instead of attacking Brest which he left open. Germany: Army Berlin -> Kiel. Germany: Army Munich -> Ruhr. Germany: Fleet Kiel -> Denmark. Opening 1a: "This is the basic opening where England is an ally, Russia is neutral, and France is the objective. Even so, nothing has yet been done to antagonize France directly. A Ruh can go to Bel with F Hol's support or defend Munich if the French move to Burgundy. In the latter event, F Hol-Bel still denies the center to France. F Hol could also support an English unit into Belgium." Germany played it conservatively in response to the French opening. France is still not antagonized, and Germany assured himself of 2 builds. Leaving Munich open would have been an unnecessary risk, since even if by so doing he could get a third build, he would then attract unwanted attention as "game leader." However, being stuck in Munich leaves him little choice on his builds. The build of one fleet indicates that although he is not at war with England, there is not total trust either. Italy: Army Rome -> Apulia. Italy: Army Venice HOLD. Italy: Fleet Naples -> Ionian Sea. This is a variant of Opening 1. Here Venice holds instead of helping out Austria by ordering A Ven-Trl. Opening 1: "This is the so-called Lepanto opening, designed to carry Italian power into the east rapidly. This was the first opening ever to be discussed in depth in an article. Edi Birsan's work on the subject is still considered a model effort. In subsequent seasons, Italy orders: Fall 1901: A Apu-Tun, F Ion C A Apu-Tun, build F Nap Spring 1902: F Ion-Eas, F Nap-Ion, A Tun H Fall 1902: A Tun-Syr, F Ion & F Eas C A Tun-Syr This is an attack on Turkey is alliance with Austria. It is often enormously effective. Turkey can block it by building F Smy and ordering F Smy-Eas. However, Italy can order F Ion-Aeg instead, threatening a convoy into Bul, Con, or Smy. The order A Ven-Trl is not favored in many quarters (the alternatives are A Ven H or A Ven-Pie). Of the alternatives, the first is too passive and indicates distrust of Austria; it does, however, have the advantage that A Ven H, A Apu S A Ven, F Ion-Tun in Fall 1901 saves Ven if Austria puts two units on it and still allows Italy to build. The second alternative needlessly antagonizes France. It can be used, however, if there is an Anglo-French alliance for sure and Italy wants to help Germany. A Ven-Trl is positive and powerful. It allows A Trl-Mun if there is an Anglo-German alliance threatening France. This will bolster the French defense and help keep the West stalemated. A Ven-Trl may also stand off a German sneak attack from Munich. It also gives the possibility of A Trl-Boh (and thence to Gal), adding to Austria's defensive line if this is necessary. On no account should Italy stab Austria. The short-term gains may be all right, but the long-term price is not something Italy would wish to pay." The Austrian opening was an unwanted suprise, since it ruined the Italian plans against Turkey. However, Italy was prepared for the occasion, and supports himself against any possible attack in the fall as described above. The Austrian threat is probably disappeared by now (along with Austria), so Italy builds a fleet in Naples to oppose the Turkish threat coming up. It is too late now to complete a Lepanto, Italy can only hope to keep the Turks out of the Ionian. Russia: Army Moscow -> Ukraine. Russia: Army Warsaw -> Galicia. Russia: Fleet Sevastopol -> Rumania. (*bounce*) Russia: Fleet St Petersburg (south coast) -> Gulf of Bothnia. Opening 1: "Russia must usually choose between a northern or southern strategy. This means putting her eggs in the appropriate basket. Here she is allied with Turkey against Austria. If there is a stand-off in Galicia or Rumania, there will be support for the same order in the Fall." In the Fall, Russia takes Rumania with support as described above while trying a wild stab at Budapest. The build in Warsaw will fuel the anti-Austria effort, and the build of an army in St Pete may indicate an attempt to take Norway from the English. Turkey: Army Constantinople -> Bulgaria. Turkey: Army Smyrna -> Ankara. Turkey: Fleet Ankara -> Constantinople. This differs from Opening 2 only in that Smyrna covers Ankara instead of holding. This is no worse than 2 if defending against Russia, but does indicate more distrust of Russia perhaps. Opening 2: "The intent here is, in the Fall, F Con-Aeg, A Smy-Con (or H) for a western push. If Russia treacherously ordered F Sev-Bla, Turkey can still defend. F Con-Ank, A Smy-Ank will hold all her home supply centers and leave Ankara open for the build of a fleet." The anticipated Western push is made in the Fall. Here that would include bouncing Austria in Serbia while ordering A Ank-Con and F Con-Aeg. Turkey's build of a fleet in Smyrna will join this push in 1902 starting an offensive against Austria and Italy. Probably Russia has committed himself to building only armies while Turkey has promised to only build fleets. Broadcast message from STAL031@KUB.NL as France in aust: LE FIGARO: ADMIRAL BLOOD ET GUTS EXECUTED FOR IGNORING ORDERS!! GENERAL VENDETTA MAY FOLLOW! Paris - Much to the nation's disgust, Brest has fallen into the hands of the English Pigs. A speedy investigation by the Marquis' personal Secret Service has brought to light that the Admiral had, at the last moment - in pursuit of personal glory, decided that the British attack would be on Belgium. In a memo to General Vendetta he wrote: "Amice, We have just received word from Paris. Based on reports from Naval Intelligence, our orders have been revised. You are to support the invasion of Belgium. Respectfully Yours, Blood et Guts" That the Admiral was tending to his own ambitions was confirmed by the late Admiral's staff - "Ce man was full of himself. He placed a statue of himself among his collection of "Ce Great Men" among whom no other than Napoleon!" The Admiral was excuted for treason on his Flagship "Victory" early this morning. The General, assuming the revised orders to be valid, simply satisfied the request made. Currently, the fate of the General remains unclear. According to the normal procedure, he should have ignored the request made to him by the Admiral since they were not signed by the Marquis. According to inside sources, the General made an emotional statement in his to defense to the Tribunal. If the statement convinced, remains to be seen. The Marquis was not available for comment. Inside sources however have stated that the Marquis was "quite upset" by the treason of the Admiral and the resulting landing by the British. A Ministry's spokesman stated: Everything will be done to get the British out of Brest. The Marquis has sworn to avenge us and will move heaven and earth to bring about the decline of the British Demagogue Peter Sweeney. OTHER NEWS: Brest - This reporter has managed to sneek into Brest in order to assess the situation. The people seem to manage pretty ok since the British soldiers do not quite know what they're doing. In the words of a local: "Mondieu!! They're raping ce FIELDS and pillaging ce WOMEN!!... not that we complain of course." Winter '00 of the game CULLODEN (EP #72) (GM is rmal@cernvax.cern.ch/Richard Lucock) Gunboat game. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Culloden Winter 1900 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ================================== Great Powers throw paper at each other but nothing else so far. League of Nations representatives 'confident that there will be no war in the forseeable future'. ================================== ---------------- Austria-Hungary: ---------------- To: ALL Welcome to Culloden! To: ENGLAND How do things look in Scandinavia? I hope you and Russia can come to a peaceful agreement. To: FRANCE I hope all goes well for you in the West. To: GERMANY You leave me alone, I'll leave you alone. Sound good? The Central powers need to present a united front. To: ITALY Presumably we have enough sense not to backstab each other. Feel free to move to Tyrolia. Helping you into Greece in the Fall is a possibility I'm seriously considering. To: TURKEY If I feel threatened after the Spring 01 move, I'll have to help Italy into Greece to consolidate my defensive stance. I hope this won't be necessary. Consider instead the possibility of a non-aggression pact that will allow us to enjoy the spoils of the Balkans peacefully. To: RUSSIA Interested in a deal to keep the peace? If you stay out of Galicia, I'll make sure you get the build in Rumania. ------- Russia: ------- The Tsar of all the Russias sends greetings and salutations to the heads of the great European states. The Tsar wishes it known that, while it is his most deeply held desire that the current disputes end in a peaceful settlement, Russia must ensure her continued security and prosperity. To that end, be it known that the provinces of Sweden and Rumania are naturally to be considered under Russian protection, and any attemts at outside interference in those areas will be looked upon with great distaste, and in fact will be considered an attack on Russia herself. Tsar Nikolai II ------ Italy: ------ In news just to hand, the following joint statement has been made by Pope Pompous XXIII and President Franco Borlini of the Italian Parliament. It is with growing alarm that both the Vatican and the Italian Parliament watch the stormclouds of war gather across Europe. With our most heartfelt desires, both the Papacy and the Presidency urge their fellow heads of state to allow the gentle warmth of peace to prevail. Let not the shallow heat of Imperial conquest drive your desires, lest it become a bitter wind that changes course at will. Italy, ever the champion of freedom and justice, takes this oppourtunity to assure the people of Europe that we stand ready to protect them. Let all loyal Italians answer the call to arms and stand against tyranny and oppression, no matter where it may be found. ------- France: ------- F -> A,R,T : Hi! F -> I : Let's try to avoid conflicts in the Med, OK? F -> G : If I move A Par-Bur, it is for defensive purposes only! I am NOT interested in Munich. F -> E : Can we agree that any move into English Channel or Irish Sea is an act of war? I hope so, since we both have better things to do than fighting each other. -------- England: -------- <London, 1900> Her Majesty's Government wishes to express alarm at the growing tensions on the Continent. The Foreign Minister was dispatched to Paris and Berlin to discuss the possibility of alliance in the event of war. "We are open to all diplomatic offers from the other Great Powers" explained the Minister, "and we have instructed our armed forces to maintain a low profile through the coming year" Issues before the Foreign Office include: 1. Resolution of the ever-vexing "Belgian Question" with France and Germany. 2. Securing the sea lanes to Norway and the Baltic timber trade. 3. Establishing reliable communications with France and Germany. Whean asked about the so-called black press, the Minister stated that "It seemed a most appallingly un-british course of action." His opinion was echoed in the House, where mutterings about "Turkish poltroonery" and "Damned Russian lies" were heard. ------- Turkey: ------- Dateline Ankara December 1st, 1900: Sources close to the Sultan indicate that he will be spending a short time with the fleet cruising in the Black Sea. The Sultan, preternaturally afraid of deep water, is reputed to have said 'Its just a seasonal fling. This year spring in the Black Sea, then a real vacation in a good Balkan resort.' Dateline Smyrna December 15th, 1900: Pilgrims arriving in this port for the upcoming 'Feast of Cold Lamb' were amazed to hear reports of the Sultan's pending conversion to some form of Christianity. The word on the street has the Sultan telling the Immam: 'Orthodox, Catholic or some middle of the road variety - I will give each a great deal of attention.' Dateline Constantinople December 23rd, 1990: Several good will missions have been sent to the capitals of western Western Europe. They have instructions to deliver certain sealed documents to duly recognized authorities, but not to conduct any negotiations nor enter into any agreements at this time. They are to report on any good fishing areas they find - the Sultan is a notoriously avid fisherman. ------------ GM's Corner: ------------ Next deadline is Monday 17 September. Based on comments received, we will take it easy (one week between moves) for a few seasons, to let people settle in, and then vote on speeding up the moves. Please keep any signatures and addresses separate from your press - I don't want to give any addresses away my mistake. If you send anything other than white press, please label each type separately. Cheers, Richard Publisher comments: Quote is from The Boston Globe, p. 61, October 6, 1990 I would recommend that everyone read the extensive GM analysis in the Winter '01 Austerlitz results in this issue. I would like to remind all GMs that all games that are not being published in chapters one through six should be published in chapter seven, this chapter! By the way, we now have 225 players from 15 different countries, once I finish my record keeping this week, I will let you know how many games we are running. I have started a ton of games lately! (This means I need at least two more guest publishers. Who wants to publish chapter seven? Chapter eight? Chapter nine?) ****************************************************************************** To join in the fun, send your name, home address, home and work phone numbers, and country preferences to Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com. ****************************************************************************** Up
