As the Spanish armies trooped out of their fortifications towards the french lines, the Austrian army also trooped towards them. The field marshal divided his troops out, sending the horse guards brigade to harry the Austrians as they marched onward, slowing their advance, the 1st division of the 1st army was ordered to keep on battering the Dutch towns unrelentlessly whilst the 2nd division was ordered to lay seige works to the town of Bonn, recently reinforced. The first army commander worked long nights perfecting his battle plans which helped the first division and its brigades to a moderately good result. Brigadier General d'Anneaux, recently arrived from Paris to take over the job of Brigadier, showed his military expertise and so impressed his superiors that he wass promoted to Lt. General. He also 'found' 2700cr when the regiments came back from their assault. The Royal Marines and the Picardy Musketeers both laboured hard and long against Dutch lines. Maj. le Phew-tous showed his bravery and was promoted into the newly-vacated lt. colonel's post. he was also Mentioned (+3). The Royal Marines took heavy casualties but a few newcomers from Paris swelled the ranks, notably Mathieu d'Averril. One item of note was when the PM was under heavy fire, Cap. du Monde was seen by the colonel of the PM running away as fast as he could towards the safety of french lines. He was summarily dishonourably discharged. The RNHB did their best in a daring flank attack to help the Royal Foot Guards' charge straight into the Dutch. However, the RNHB had to retreat from heavy fire and the RFG suffered heavily from dutch artillery. Of note in this skirmish was Cap. d'Poulet who was promoted to Major and mentioned (+4) The 2nd division was led into battle by their very able commander. From this, the 3rd brigade of foot did remarkably well, however he was let down by the regimental commanders. The 27th managed only an inconclusive result, whilst the 4th was repulsed by a dutch sorty. Lt.Col. B'Stard, for his brave attempt at charging into the middle of the dutch was mentioned (+5), but it was left to Maj. l'Enchantre to organise his men into a coherant battle formation and save the day. Cap. d'Lyon was promoted to major and also found 900cr lying around. The 4th Brigade was let down by everybody, the commander sent his regiments off into a dutch trap, the 69th getting severely beaten back, whilst the Gascon regiment managed to pull back mostly intact. The horse guards did very well, harrying the Austrian infantry on all sides made them stop their advance and construct defences. The Dragoon Guards massacred their opponents, Lt. Col. Baudelaire was mentioned (+1). Maj. de Fleurvilles was promoted to full major, mentioned (+5) and found 1100crs off several dead austrians. Sub. D'Eglantine was mentioned (+3) and promoted to captain and found 150cr. The Queens Own, didn't do quite as well, coming up against a harder Austrian unit managed only to push them back a little. Maj. Teefied was mentioned twice for his daring acts of bravery (+2,+3). The 2nd Army, still being attacked by the Spanish did quite well. The Spanish didn't break through the French lines although the frontier regiment was somewhat depleted by a dutch assault most notably Cap. Charon of the GMD. The Heavy Brigade found it difficult to maneouver around the dutch defences, the ALC producing only an inconclusive result even though Cap. Champignon (newly arrived from the Provinces) was mentioned (+5) and found 400cr. The CPC however, was severly depleted by Dutch artillery, Sub. Bonnard amongst those getting killed. Cap. d'Arme de Lieu being mentioned (+2) and promoted to major, Cap. Du Bonnet being mentioned (+3) and promoted to major, newcomer Cap. du Montaigne was mentioned (+5) but wounded in the process, and Sub. Villeneuse was mentioned (+3) and promoted to captain. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------- In Paris, July 1673. WEEK 1. In Paris, several people appeared from the Provinces and the back-streets to help the war-effort. Claude le Magne, Jean d'Pais, and Louis d'Armaund bumped into each other at the shylocks, claude and Jean borrowing money whilst Louis repayed his debt of 200cr from his stock of war-booty. At the clubs were Mathieu d'Averril who joined the Frog & Peach, Filliet Mignon, Ronaid r'Egain, Jean-Luis d'Avignon, and Ganelon Maussadin all joined Red Phillips. After bed and breakfast was dealt with, Ganelon wandered off to find an instructor to teach him rapier work, whilst Claude joined the PLD successfully. Beldrin du Puay however, tried unsucessfully to join the RFG after being told that there were no more vacancies...perhaps they spoke too soon. Also at the regiments was Louis who practised his rapier. Mathieu bought carefully chose his presents and took himself off to the beautiful Deborah's house. Unfortunately for him, Ronaid also had the same idea (duel - Ronaid challenges). Also courting was Filliet, who had decided that the charms of Chantelle were enough for him, she declined his generous offers though, whilst Jean d'Pais tried to court the lovely Amy, but even though he serenaded her with his favourite love song, she stayed faithful to Pepe. Jean-Luis, liking neither women or the army at this time, went in search of liquid refreshment - at his new club. No-one else was there so he had the waiter's attention all to himself. WEEK 2. This week, Louis d'Armaund courted Angelique (for the umpteenth time). She was more courteous than before, and loved all of Louis' war stories, but alas, she didn't alow it to go much further than tea and stories. Filliet courted Chantelle again, and this time was suitably rewarded whilst Deborah entertained two more guests - Jean-Luis and Beldrin (duel - Beldrin challenges). At the Frog and Peach was Mathieu, drowning his sorrows at not only being rejected by Deborah, but also getting into a fight about it. Ronaid also drowned his sorrows, but at Red Phillips. Ganelon continued his practising, whilst Jean d'Pais and Charles le Magne went to Mme. Miggins' for a swift one (drink that is). Upon leaving, both were set upon by thugs who gave each a white feather before beating them up, the thugs then ran away laughing. WEEK 3. The brawl must have had an effect upon Jean and Charles, for straightaway Charles went to his regiment and started vigourously practising with his sabre, whilst Jean sent a letter to Pierre B'Stard asking if he could join the 27th. Pierre wrote back to say Jean had been accepted and that he should spend the next week indulging in 'Paris delights' before joining them at the front. Ganelon continued practising, and Jean-Luis tried unsucessfully to join the GMD. Beldrin joined the Blue Gables and spent his time there, Mathieu went to the Frog & Peach, and Filliet and Ronaid went to Red Phillips, but...as they left one evening, a group of thugs jumped upon them and severely Filliet up, giving him a white feather. Ronaid was held back, but untouched. (The thugs then ran away laughing). Louis d'Armaund courted Angelique again, but before he could get to her place, he was set upon by thugs armed with white feathers and a wicked laugh. The fight was seen by Angelique who found the best medical attention money could buy for him. WEEK 4. First thing this week saw Mathieu getting beaten up by the laughing thugs with the white feather. Mathieu evidently saw some meaning to this for he promptly joined the Royal Marines and was whisked off to the front. Jean-Luis also was beaten up, but he went straight to the doctors for a few health tips (practise CON). Filliet and Ronaid both went to Red Phillips again, whilst Charles practised slashing thug-shaped dummies with his sabre. Jean, Ganelon and Beldrin all spent their time at Mme. Miggins', where Jean followed his regimental commander's instructions to the full. Most were surprised to see Beldrin there, but all are welcome (as always). However, when Beldrin and Ganelon left, they were set upon by thugs, given a white feather and a good beating and then laughed at. The highlight of this week, is that Angelique (with a new hair style) consented to all of Louis' requests. nuff said? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------- Duels: Fabre d'Eglantine v Louis de Fleurvilles : post due to war.
