It took some time, but the battle lines were drawn early. I found a number of things quite interesting. Germany held out for a long time against the E/F alliance. The four eastern powers changed alliances often, with Austria always coming out ahead. And despite all of the delays, e-mail probems, etc. we only had 3 replacements, one because of a player changing jobs, another because of a player having unreliable e-mail links. I think that is quite good (I am is some games, where there is a player change every season!) AUSTRIA: Dawn Patrol was my first email game, and as such, I was unsure of what to do, so I decided on a 'soft' start, that is, secure deals with all of my neighbours. I concluded non-agression with all of them, but decided to go for broke with Italy, and grab Serbia + Greece, leaving Trieste open. I was wary of War-Gal, so moved to preempt northen invasion. I didn't think Italy would lie to me, and so, I lost Trieste on the first turn - things looking less than good. By now, Turkey had a flier at the expense of Russia, and I was worried. 1902 was concerned with struggles with Italy, and by the time that that was over, I was faced with a weak Russia, strong Turkey + potentially nasty Italy. I realised that the thing to do was to stop eother of Russia/Turkey from getting too strong, and in the same time, keep them fighting each other. I had refrained from assisting either of them in Balkan development, but now was the time to stop the Turk, by helping Russia into Rum. By chance, I managed to grab Bulgaria from Turkey too. At about the same time, France attacked Italy, forcing Italy west. With the first demise of Turkey, it was easy to grab a little more Balkan territory. Then, with Turkey at an all time low, and Russia getting stronger, I performed my first stab, and crippled Russia, of course helping Turkey too :) So, even though I had secured most of the Balkans and environs, I could still be allied to one or other of them. Meanwhile Italy was in trouble, after guessing that I would attack him ( but I didn't ). As the game became stranger, Turkey occupied Venice, and the fall of Italy was planned. I had always been wary of Augie, perhaps because of his unpredictability in some aspects, perhaps also, because this made his tactics good. This meant that I was determined to get rid of him as quickly as I could. I had offered Italy a chance earlier, but he refused. Now, with the planned Italy crush, I felt that the time to act was due. I was scared of a Turkish army on my borders with nowhere to go ( thus anywhere to go ), so while Turkey killed a Russian army I struck, again helping someone else too ( Italy ). This also meant that I could prop up Italy against England/France. Within two turns, Turkey was dead, and by now Germany was on last legs. It became a necessity to cede Sev to the Russian. I hoped that a northern Russian fleet would make it easier to split the now-solid Anglo-French accord. Alas no fleet materialised, so I decided that what Russia could do with armies, I could do too. The German situation was similar. I had every intention of holding Germany for the Germans, until I did not need them, hence the attack on Munich, in the same time persuading Germany to attack the Frech holds. This had two purposes. This meant that France could not support Munich, and so that Italy could capture Marseille. As for long term plans, a 2-way draw was the least I expected when I left. Austia/Italy could grab more than 17 centres. Austria/England could clean up easily, and Austria herself, given some guile, could win outright :) I expect though a 4 way split ( sorry Russia ). daniel, ex Dual Monarch Italy: My Endgame statement: I didn't play well. I shouldn't have stabbed Austria so early in the game. I reacted wrong when Turkey changed camps. The only thing what satisfies me, is that France did never make it to the Italian penisula. Thanks to Daniel Hannigan, who helped me to get back into this game. Also words of thank to Anand who kept the game going for more than a year. He deserves a better ranking in the Runestone Poll next year! Increased numers of several strains have been reported and the researchers fear that a crsis situation may be at hand. The leading theory among the researchers is that the unsually large concentration of various militaries in the region has allowed bacterial breeding to run rampant. A new theory, however, proposes that the bacteria detected are actually a new strain, carried into the region fact that the bacteria found tend to cause confusion and dementia in humans, such as may have affected the Austrian high command last Spring. Whatever the cause, the group claims that mass evacuation of the region is the only means to avert catastrophe.
