So, I went with the Turks. So, then I'm getting all ready to shift my focus to the West, and support France against England, because it's becoming all too clear that I'm next. But, whoops! Suddenly Turkey decides that he wants to attack me after all, but the timing is horrible; I had already persuaded Germany to attack Russia (I guess I can't say whether he would have anyway if I hadn't tried to convince him to), and Russia was already in a bad way. So instead of getting a good piece of Russia, he ended up with a good piece of me. So, I concentrated the rest of my efforts on keeping Turkey from doing well. When Germany hit 16 units, I gave England a proxy so that we wouldn't have to bother with negotiations about attacking Germany, but I guess Germany was a better BSer than I would have thought... So, Germany wins. Whee. -Jordan G -> All: Greetings everyone, Since the winner of any war gets to write the history books I will present my version of the history of Def Con 5. Things started out w/ the usual flurry of diplomacy. France wanted/demanded Belgium. Which though tending to disturb me I was willing to compromise with France especially since I couldn't get a hold of England (we had email problems the entire game.) I tried to get Italy to attack France and not attack AH, I think that having dealt w/ me before and or in the spirit of experimentation Italy eventually decided to do exactly the opposite. Keeping true to the spirit of Ice Queen beligerance Russia invited me not to enter the Baltic,Silesia,Prussia (ever). This seemd fine with me since he offered not to go there either. Finally England and I contacted each other and I was please to discover his desire to knock out France, pronto. I was interested in trying out a German/England alliance and encouraged England to strike the first blow versus France. I figured at worst I would get Belgium out of the deal and be able to pick sides later. I got Belgium and England got Brest, while Italy and Russia began thier blitz of A-H. I wanted to help out A-H somehow but he was gone from the game so quikly I never had a chance. France moved into position to retake Brest provided I didn't help England/hinder France. With the growth of mother Russia I decided that my bread was buttered on the English side and lended him a hand versus France. A-H was gone by the end of year 2. This left the IRT triad manuevering for position. Turkey had chosen his and Russias sides to be opposites and both tried to woo Italy. Having captured Paris the rest of the work in dismembering France was best left to England. What was I to do with all my nice new armies? Attacking England w/ only 1 fleet was silly. This left me attacking Russia or Italy (since A-H was gone now). Russia then told me not to attack Italy. Which of course left me with only one choice. When I looked at the board at this point I feared stalemate. Russia was in a strong position even mine/Englands capture of Swe/StP while it seemd that France would hold out long enough that Italy might decide to help him form a partial stalmate. Turkey's assult on Russia was bogged down... despite help from Italy. When Turkey decided to deal w/ Russia and attack Italy. I really feared I would be stopped cold against Russia now, since a single supporting army of Turkey's in the Ukraine would have completed the line against me forever. I gave things my best shot and ended up w/ Moscow and Warsaw. While France's build of a fleet instead of an army gave England an edge in wrapping things up over there. Italy was out for revenge versus Turkey at any cost while the Turkish fleets swarmed for the Ionian. I started for the Balkans to mop up Russia and attempt to grab more pieces than Turkey, while Italy/England stopped Turkey before he could get into the Ionian. At this point England and I had greater than 18 centers together and it was a question of whether we would backstab each other... we decided that attacking each other would only profit Turkey, and agreed to 2 years of non-agression. We even kept to it, and would have kept it logner accept for the fantastic success of German armies in the Balkans when I suddenly found myself at 16 units and in a position to grab the victory. Since Italy and Turkey were certainly not going towork together there was little chance to stop me from grabbing a net 2 supplu centers and so I did. G -> E: A rather interesting game. Except for one small backstab of mine at the end, building when I had said I wouldn't, we really stuck together. G -> I: Italy is a difficult country to play. And I have yet to see Italy attack A-H and profit in the long term. A good experiment though. G -> T: Thanks for your help in the end. I have been asked if I can acknowledge orders received. In general I will if I have a chance, and if there is enough time between receipt of orders and the deadline to make it worthwile. This weekend I will not be able to acknowledge since I will be out of town until Sunday evening. ---- Further questions: House rules regarding transfered pieces, jointly controled pieces, and temporarily jointly controled pieces (i.e. verified orders) would be appreciated. Tranferred pieces: you may proxy a piece to someone else. To do so you must send me an order that piece X will obey proxy orders for this turn from person Y. If person Y does not submit orders for piece X, it may have default orders, if it doesn't, it goes into civil disorder. (ie it holds). Proxies may be one turn, or may be multiple turn, or may be indefinite until revoked. A proxy may be revoked simply by submitting an order for the formerly proxied piece. Proxies may be started and ended unilaterally by the owning player. The fact that a piece is proxied is not revealed in the results. There are no rules for jointly controled pieces or verified orders, as this would take the fun out of the game. Allies would insist that all orders be verified, etc. You may if you wish copy an ally with your orders. Of course you can also submit a set of orders overruling the set of orders that were sent to you (former) ally. I will not accept orders from one nation submitted by another nation (above proxy rules not withstanding). Note to Turkey: Could you please submit your orders in a format closer to what I have used. The format "Con A -> Bul" was unexpected, threw me off, and is going to make me more likely to make unneccessary errors. Vienna Press -- Rome, May 20, 1902 - 'The Austrians got what they deserved,' said a government official. -- LONDON (AP) - Today, the British Prime Minister Margaret Hatchet, when asked her reaction to French threats of brutal retaliation on the British Isles, stated emphatically "Britain will not be intimidated by any country, large or small. And besides, Brest is historically British: we bought it, we built it, and we gave it away to France. Now we're just getting it back. Wait a second, was that Brest, or was that Norway? I don't remember....." Mrs. Hatchet was quickly hurried away by embarassed aides. Later, aides said that what Mrs. Hatchet meant was that England was responding to threats on British citizens' lives in Brest, and was also just protecting British interests in the area. They speculated that Mrs. Hatcher may have been hallucinating from poisons found in her morning crumpets, although the rumor circulating in London is that she is recovering from a 1000-pound-a-day hashish habit. -- (Istanbul Review) The Russian Ambassador died today in a mysterious boating accident. In a very confusing series of military operations the past few months, German forces both aided and attacked Russian Czarist corps, Turkish troops attacked Russian forces and aided Italian units against Russia, and Italian soldiers moved against Russia and supported English operations which must be considered very anti-Turkish. Several military strategists in observing nations were fired when they were unable to explain the conflicting situations. An unidentified source in Rome is reputed to have stated that "the spiritual following of the soul is of far greater importance than the outward physical governing of the body..". When asked to explain further he began stammering and was dragged off by a Vatican security guard with an odd sounding accent. I won't bother with the build/disband phase for this year. This has been a very fast game, both in game time (only 7 years) and in real time, considering that we started this at the end of September, this has taken almost exactly two months to run. I am happy with how things went, and apologise for any errors I have made. I will do one more mailout for people who would like to make any endgame statements, and will probably collate some information about the flow of the game as well (if I get the chance). I will also publish the results as a block in rec.games.pbm.
