Diplomacy Zine -- EP #212 Chapter One From: rlister@cti1.UUCP (Russell Lister) Date: Wed, 02 Jan 1991 21:34:06 +0000 Issue #212 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL - Chapter One: ************************************************************************* ----------- Chapter One ----------- This chapter publishes results for the games AUSTERLITZ, BAGHDAD, BLACK OCTOBER, BLITZKRIEG, DRAGON, GET SOME, Gunboat game PASSCHENDAELE, and no press gunboat game KING'S GAMBIT. Publisher: Russ Lister (rlister@cti.com -or- uunet!cti1!rlister) Checker : Michael Norrish (norrish@st1.vuw.ac.nz) ----------- This Issue: Spring, Fall and Winter 1905 for AUSTERLITZ (EP #71) (GM is loeb@frbdx11.bitnet/ Daniel Loeb) Winter 1903, Spring, Summer and Fall 1904 for BAGHDAD (EP #78) (GM is foor@freezer.it.udel.edu/ Chad Foor) Winter 1904, Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter 1905 for GET SOME (EP #81) (GM is roger@nuacc.bitnet/Roger Safian) ============================================================================= AUSTERLITZ -- Spring, Fall and Winter 1905 ============================================================================= Broadcast message from STAL031@KUB.NL as France in aust: Paris, Le Figaro - AUSTRIAN EMPEROR PUPPETS TO SULTAN Le Marquis has expressed his dissapointment, disbelieve and sorrow about the fate of the Austrian-Hungarian Emperor. "It is a shame that a man so proud bows to the Turks." An Austrian visiting Paris, however, reveals that things may not be as they seem, but was not willing to make any other statements. The tourist even refused to discuss THE RUMOR in Europe: The Sultan had gained total control of the Austrian forces after he had invited Emperor Ken to 'pay attention to' his Harem. Eversince, neither the Austrian General nor the Admiral has seen much of the Emperor. MARQUISE ELIZABETH TO VISIT WALES In light of the remarkably improved relations between England and France, Marquise Elizabeth is planning to visit the Great Isle for two weeks. Her Ladies in waiting have revealed that she is very excited as she has some fond childhood memories of the Wales area. RESOLUTION NR. VI PASSED The recently formed Security Council of Europe has condemned the ultra- aggressive behavior of certain elements in Europe and has passed resolution Nr. VI. The resolution was based on the latest brainchild of Prof. Dr. F. Ullashith. The professor, the leading military science guru in Europe, claims that in certain situations, assuming X factors to be dynamic and Y factors to be static, plus a low E count, ceteris paribus the abstract problem solution 2+2+1= VI IS feasible.... This paper will not be held responsible/ accountable for the above. Please don't try anything at home! The entire Riviera region was successfully annexed by German corporate raiders representing major brewmeister interests from Munich. The tremendous loss in capital has taxed the government to its limit. The finance minister is requesting foreign aid from all points of the Continent: Italy, Austria, Russia, and even the faraway Turks. `We must prevent the wholesale economic domination of a country that defends (and advocates!) the right to drink horsepiss. We fear, not only for our own safety, but for the imminent decline of restaraunteuring and fine dining with the loss of French wines in the international market. Already, breweries are belching their filthy smoke on what was once fertile wine country. Please assist in the cause to preserve both the French economy and fine restaurants throughout your countries as well.'" Nantes (UPI): ``In an effort to save our national industry, the government has aggressively been courting German interests to exploit Spanish lands instead of fine provinces like Champagne, Burgundy, and Cognac. We even must suffer the dishonor of assisting the Germans in this effort. But, the alternative, loss of our own treasures, is worse, so we persist.'' Brest (AP): ``The shock and disgrace of the French takeover of the Liverpool whisky market has led to atrocities against the traders who pulled off the stunt last year. Protests by human rights organizations such as Amnesty Continental, as well as the League of Nations, have been to no avail. Therefore, the government has commissioned what few resources it has left and ordered the Second Navy to rescue the stranded and much persecuted traders. In seeing off the fleet, the Defense Minister proclaimed, `The English swine have no right to complain about their insignificant whisky exchange particularly after their government directly intervened in the German collateral takeover where we lost over half our national assets. This ill treatment towards our peaceful citizenry is blatant disregard for human rights, and cannot be tolerated. We call on all countries to sever relations with the British scoundrels until they decide to join the civilized world and stop attacking peaceful foreigners.'" (January 2nd is when we'll be starting up again ... etc etc) My plans are the following: Sunday the 23rd, I'm leaving to visit my relatives in Illinois and won't be back until Friday the 28th. That will be the only time I will be "really" gone from the system. Unless there are any serious objections, I will assume that January 2nd will be OK for everybody to start back up... Give me some feedback here when you guys send in your moves... I had to change this, because the Austrian player sent a revised move to me, at 21:11 on the 4th. This was before the deadline. I do not think it would be fair to penalize him because my machine was down. I hope this doesn't cause to much trouble. Sure. At any rate, I think all the mail is in, but I can't be sure. Roger ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: IN%"calsci!al%gvgpsa.gvg.tek.com@RELAY.CS.NET" "Al Petterson" 7-DEC-1990 17:44:43.40 To: roger%nuacc.bitnet@RELAY.CS.NET Subj: Comment by observer on GET SOME To the Gamemaster of GET SOME (roger@nuacc.bitnet): I realize it's too late for this to have any effect, but it bothered me reading the record of GET SOME published in EP. In the Spring 1904 move, the following orders were made: English Moves ... F Norwegian Sea -> North Sea *bounce* F North Sea -> Denmark *bounce* German Moves ... F Norway -> North Sea *bounce* F Denmark supports F Norway -> North Sea *cut* ^^^^^ This is incorrect. I don't have the rulebook in front of me, so I can't quote the specific rule, but it is clear in the standard Diplomacy rules that support into a province is NOT cut by an attack *from that province* unless said attack *dislodges* the unit offering support. I believe it is in the rulebook under "Cutting Support." The rationale for this rule is fairly easy to follow: if two units belonging to one player border a province containing a unit beloning to another player, and no other units are close enough to affect these provinces, the first player should be able to take the second player's province and dislodge the second player's unit; it should not be a 50:50 chance. No other unit was ordered to Denmark; no support was given to the English move to Denmark (and in fact the English move did not succeed); therefore, the German move F Nwy-Nth should have succeeded (2:1) and the English fleet should have been dislodged. I bring this up not to embarrass you (I'll inform no one else; obviously no one in your game caught it), but because I noticed the same error in an earlier turn as well (though only in notation; the move would not have succeeded anyway), and, well, as a participant in EP, you could be my GM someday. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Greetings, Here are the results for Diplomacy game #81 (Get Some) for Spring 1905. Although Germany has lost a home center (and a nice position gain through a GM mistake), he is not crippled. We can form and maintain a stalemate line in the north. However, France, on the other hand, has left himself relatively wide open for a long time in this game. Even the Fleet in Brest wouldn't save him if you went after his centers. He has committed himself too much to the southern central portion of the board with a war that, if he wins, will: A) Put his units so far out of useful reach on the board that they are, for all reasonable intents and purposes, useless, and B) have taken so long to do so that you could have torn him apart a number of times. As a corollary to this statement, Germany and I, in that time frame, could have torn YOU apart while he *ucks around down there. THINK ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
