Note: The Mahler Index (read #'s as percentages) is an index which gives a rough estimate of the percentage of the game completed. It is figured according to the formula given below, and it is supposedly a good figure which shows how "advanced" the game is toward a single-player victory (since it doesn't take alliances into account). Variance = Sum of SC's held squared - (Total SC's held squared / 7) Std.Dev. = Square root (Variance / 7) Mahler Index = (Std.Dev. - 0.35) / 0.06 Status: Blitzkrieg ended as a three-way draw as of 11/17/90. (Start date was approximately 6/1/89). ENDGAME STATEMENTS ------------------ From: JUFAP%ISUEVAX.BITNET@UWAVM.U.WASHINGTON.EDU (Frank Poduska) End game statement from a one time French player: Jeez, did I play in that game? ------------ From: <harvard!ames!claris!portal!cup.portal.com!Eric_S_Klien> Endgame statement: I wish to thank Austria for allying with me after the ruthless English stab. Stewart Winter is a classy guy. Eric Klien ------------ From: cognos!stewartw (Stewart Winter) Concluding comments of Austria (played by Stewart Winter) The Last deadline ... I thought we might never get there. This has certainly been the longest game I have played in. I thought I was beginning to see WWII looming on the horizon. It was, however, a satisfying game from a personal point of view. Firstly, I would like to apologize to all players for the poor email connection here at cognos. Our connections to the world have changed many time in the past year and one-half ... not always for the better. As the gm will attest, things have become great in the last month ... too bad it took so long to get there. Secondly, I would like to complement Doug as a superb gm. I think you did a dynamite job (especially helping me through our email mess). Finally to some comments about the game. If memory serves me correctly, the game actually started out rather poorly for Austria with both Turkey and Russia attacking quite vigorously. I had a strong ally in Italy, but little else going for me. Fortunately, France collapsed so quickly that England and Germany joined forces to attack Russia. This weakened Russia sufficiently for me to defend myself against Turkey alone. Turkey offered an alliance to attack (against Russia I think) and I accepted ... he stabbed me. Germany began to become a powerful force in the game (in fact at this point russia, turkey and I felt we were going to lose to E/G). I agreed to cooperate again with Turkey, but I remembered the previous stab, and made a deal with Russia. We stabbed Turkey together. Meanwhile England and Germany started to squabble (I can't even remember how that came about), and Italy collapsed. Russia messed up a few moves and it took forever to eliminate Turkey - unfortunately I couldn't support my Italian ally because of this and he was eliminated. Now we entered the final phase of the game. I was allied with everyone left in the game except Turkey. England violated an agreement by moving into the Ionian (had you broken our treaty sooner or taken advantage at that moment then you probably could have had a solo victory). I asked England to move out of the Ionian the next turn, and he did, BUT I NEVER THOUGHT HE WOULD! I moved in, and I decided that the only way to keep him from a solo victory was to capture Italy. Meanwhile, Germany kept wanting to attack Russia (and wanted me to stab him), but I was refusing. You obviously didn't understand how badly I NEEDED the support of those few Russian units to help finish off Turkey. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't stab Russia then. This was (without doubt) the reason that Germany and Austria kept going to war. Even late in the game Russia and I offered you a very sincere alliance if you would move against England to prevent him from getting a solo victory. I felt you were not recognizing the forces that were building up around Germany. I decided that the only country that could keep England from getting Germany was Austria. This could have been a 4 way draw, if you hadn't been so adament about attacking Russia. Finally Russia, I could have eliminated him at one point in the game, but I had decided that it was more interesting to try and keep him alive and happy, than to blast him away. A bigger challenge anyhow. My complements to all the players ... especially Kurt for his excellent play, his letters and his press articles, and Eric and Edward for being steadfast allies (Eric, we won't count the start of the game, ok?) Stewart ------------ From: kschroe2@ub.d.umn.edu (Kurt Schroeder) The Emperor of the West spun on his gilt throne. Slowly, a smile lit his evil, corrupt features. "So, the fools think they've forestalled an English victory, eh? WE shall see about that!!" And so saying, he ordered the cover taken from the machine which had been prepared in secrecy under his personal direction for lo these many months. Most of the scientists and workers who had worked on it were now dead, or worse. Those who lived and were still sane could not know enough to even comprehend the immensity of evil contained herein. One trembling underling finally raised the courage to speak: "Sire, this machine, it's so evil looking! What does it do?" "Aha!! So, one of you has the courage to ask! You shall be rewarded handsomely! To start, you will be allowed to run the machine for the first battle in which I will use it. This machine, my useless advisors, is the Stalemate Improbability Machine! It makes Stalemate lines collapse by placing a hyperdimensional region in the world from which an attack on a strong position can be augmented. Now those Austrians and their sniviling Russian helots will know the meaning of the word Fear!" "Excellent, your Supreme Vileness! How do I use it?" said the underling who had spoken before. "The device is simplicity itself to use. All you need do is enter the small cage (large enough for a man to stand) near the bottom there. I have programmed the machine myself, and all you need do is press the large red button on the side of the cage." "But Majesty, why does the device require that I enter a cage?" "Ah, err, why, it's to protect you from the vibrations and electrical force fields which are generated. Now, get into the cage, or I shall let someone else have the honor!" "Y-y-yes, your Infinite Putrescitude!" And so speaking, the man entered the cage and pressed the red button. "Nothing seems to be happening, your Supreme Malefactoriness!" "Here, let me try this one!" And so speaking, the Emperor pressed a small black button near the nether extremity of the huge device. There was an ear-splitting shriek, and the Emperor's advisors recoiled in horror as the man in the cage was slowly vaporized from the bottom up. After the spectacle had finished, the Emperor turned to his remaining advisors. "There, that has guaranteed my victory over the Austrians in Munich! The unfortunate thing about this wonderful device is that it does require the sacrifice of one life for every use. Now, who's next? Only seventeen more supply centers to go!" And on into the night, the peaceful silence of the English countryside was rent by the screams of the Emperor's unfortunate advisors. Thanks to everyone for a great game. As the above would suggest, I am somewhat frustrated by Diplomacy's tendency to run up against stalemate positions, but maybe it's just Calhammer's way of telling us the game is over. Congratulations to Eric and Stewart for managing to put together a solid (or is that soiled? sordid?) alliance toward the end of the game which managed to prevent me from gaining what was rightfully mine. I will of course continue to wonder if I could have done something better to win the game. However, I feel that the stabs I had to make were timed about as well as could be expected for someone who took a fairly early lead and thus was the focus of the unkindly attention of everyone else. I hope to meet you all again on the field of Diplomacy someday. For the King and England--- Joseph Chamberlain aka Kurt Schroeder -------------- FINAL COMMENTS -------------- GM'ing this game was a lot of fun. I look forward to the opportunity to GM another game, Blitzkrieg II, and all of you who played in this game are welcome to sign up for it. It will be a regular game. Also, I promise lots more Dave Barry quotations...I hope the length of them didn't bother anyone. Thanks to all players for getting their turns in roughly on time. Even though we didn't always meet the deadline, we were usually pretty close. I hope the adjudication mistakes I made weren't too troubling to everyone; I got better as time went on. The length and stability of this game is something I hope to see continue in all EP games. On an administrative note, I have the results for years 1910 onward compressed and saved in my directory. If anyone is interested in these, let me know within a couple of weeks, and I'll email them all to you. In my next game, I plan to keep more detailed statistics on supply center ownership as well as make the deadline process more efficient. That's all, folks! Scientists are working on isolating a cause for these curiosities.'' Liverpool (Reuters): ``In the first time in its long and illustrious history, the local whisky exchange was taken over by foreign traders. A bloc of French port traders surprised local merchants with a hostile takeover of several top domestic whisky distributors and producers. It appears to be a while before the local industry will be able to muster up a defense, so for the time being, English whisky will have a French label on it.'' Paris (Le Monde): ``Southern businessmen were successful in fending off attacks by German corporate raiders representing several top brewery interests. However, the defense was not sufficient to dissuade the Germans, and new steps are being taken to protect the huge collateral of casinos, hotels, and resorts that all remain on the chopping block if the traders fail. The government is suspicious of possible negotiations that are currently taking place by the English and Spanish ministries, particularly since the Spanish wineries have rarely been a focus of interest to British traders."
