I apologize for the error, which should not have been too great a problem since many of you noticed it. Therefore, I'd like to delay the deadline as little as possible. The new deadline is 24 hours later (this Tuesday), but if I have all the orders in hand earlier in the day I may adjudicate it early. Again, I apologize for the mistake. This is purely for convenience and is not meant to suggest that you are cowardly little scurrying animals. I wouldn't dream of it. (I also apologize for the lack of paragraphing.) To: ENGLAND Since you asked for Moscow so nicely, I'm letting you have it. I don't want any friction on our border. Let's keep our weasels in their proper supply centers: Moscow and St. Pete for you, Warsaw for me. To: FRANCE Are you trying to weasel out of your alliance with England? If you are looking for a new alliance, I am open to suggestions. (Though inviting me to carve up Italy will be a waste of time.) To: GERMANY Your only quarrel is with France? Now that's an ant farm of a different color! I would be honored to stand by peacefully if you allied with England against your western neighbor. Then you offered to help me out in Warsaw. Brilliant; truly disturbing. I do not need help to dance in Warsaw. It will be sufficient if your army in Silesia remains inert. Also, if A Munich is forced to retreat, A Tyr will support it back into Munich in the Fall. Would you like to touch my weasel? To: ITALY Every season somebody has to implore you to stab me. The other players must think you're a real weasel. I greatly appreciate your presence as a shield to the west; I'm sure you are equally appreciative of my protection to the north and east. Let me know what I can do to help you stay solvent. By the way, I took your press to Germany as being forged. If it wasn't, let me know. To: RUSSIA You gotta send press to receive press. (Which is true with respect to weasels as well.) To: TURKEY The fleet in Bulgaria backed off, and is now aiding the study of the Lesser Greek Weasel [Minaricus Greco Weaselum]. I hope your threat was forged. (The "roll thru Sevastopol" message was forged, obviously.) I will refrain from atacking you or advancing toward you as long as you stay out of the Aegean and Ionian Seas. (If you moved into the Ionian this turn, I'll stand by in the Fall while you move it back. I advise you to think twice before helping France in the Med -- keeping me or my ally from growing is one thing, but if you help shatter Italy there _will_ be hell to pay. You don't want to see France in the Balkans, do you?) --- >From England: To: FRANCE Bonjour, my ally. The signal to noise ratio in the press has been pretty low, but I trust that I read your messages correctly. I am now doing my utmost to bring the German war to a swift conclusion. I suggest that you continue to pressure Holland with A Ruh - Hol...I may be in a postion to support it next season. Or, if I can cut a possible support (i.e. with F NTH - HEL) I may do that instead. I intend to take Sweden if possible this Fall. I realize that Italy is being annoying, but I think it is important that they go attack Austria this year. I've been trying, with little result, to achieve that through the press. To: RUSSIA If you need support against Austria, I may be able to help. I'm not trying to eliminate you from the game - I'd just like Sweden and St. Pete :>. To: TURKEY You'd better take Bulgaria or Greece this year, or I think you're a goner. I sure hope you moved to the AEG and TYR. How an Austrian fleet managed to make it to Bulgaria is a mystery to me... --- >From France: (Paris, spring 1904) The French government wishes to officially thank the black press writers in winter 1903. Interestingly enough, much of the forged press was identical in content to the official press, so there will be no retaliatory taunting at this time. To: ENGLAND Thanks for affirming your commitment to France. I appreciate your build in Edi as opposed to Lon. I trust that you will not be tempted by the Austrian proposals; we both realize that if war breaks out between us, Austria will run to swift victory. Here are my thoughts on the 4 issues you highlighted: 1. Destruction of Germany: Glad to see that you're still committed to this. He did not seem to be interested in anti-Austrian maneuvers, but did seem to be interested in anti-French maneuvers, so it seems that we have no choice but to eliminate him. We need to get a center from him ASAP. Once one falls, the rest should come easily, if we keep the pressure on. To that end, perhaps you could concentrate on Denmark and/or Kiel, and let Russia hang on to Sweden and Moscow for now. Germany will not be able to withstand attacks on two fronts, and should crumble quickly. 2. Your Russian Adventure: I agree with your rationale; I was just slightly upset by your exclusive concentration on that campaign. I hope we can put this issue to rest now. 3. Austria: Yes, we must stay together or Austria will win easily. It looks like he will have an easier time taking Moscow than you will; you might consider an alternative plan for the armies in northern Russia - support the Russian unit in Moscow (better that he keeps it than Austria gets it). 4. Threats to Each Other: I agree, a stab by either of us at this point is not very intelligent. Be assured, if I do build F Bre, I will notify you, and will move to MAO immediately. At this point, I have no reason to not trust you, and you have no reason to not trust me. As I see it, the Anglo-French alliance is still completely intact. To: GERMANY You seem to be upset by the "belligerent French". In the last two seasons, I propsed a method for eliminating the French "belligerence": join forces, and head south. I have not received any indication of your willingness to cooperate in this manner; you are leaving me no choice but to continue my offensive maneuvers against you. The offer remains on the table, but the ball is now in your court. To: ITALY OK, so now we've both over-reacted in the Med. I think we both realize that we have little to gain by waging war against each other. I still feel the need to convince you of the Austrian threat, however. He will have 13 centers after taking the rest of Russia, and crushing Turkey. At this point, he can win the game by quickly stabbing you and grabbing one or two other centers (St. Petersburg, Berlin, or Munich, for example). Even if Russia and Turkey work together, they will have a difficult time of it. Once again, you are in a position to do something about this. You can't isolate yourself forever. To: TURKEY Gee, somebody else (other than England and France) realizes the Austrian threat. I hope you and Russia can maintain some sort of defensive front... --- >From Germany: To: WORLD Well, it looks like a previous leader is in control again. Things in the government are in disarray (as usual). To: ENGLAND Dieter is very upset with the English, who have not communicated with him at all, and have been publicly seen with the belligerent French. Unless the English make an attempt to communicate immediately, Dieter will be forced to add a quarrel with the silent English to his quarrel with the belligerent French. Go back to your islands and maybe I'll leave you alone! :-) To: FRANCE I accept you offer of withdrawl from our mutual border. We will each of course need to leave armies in Holland/Belgium to protect ourselves from naval affronts from other powers until those powers have been successfully dealt with either through diplomacy or force. I am somewhat concerned with the Austrians right now and have not decided what to do or how to deal with them. Let me know how you would like to handle the Italians. To: AUSTRIA Unfortunately, I need my army in Munich right now. Also, as you can tell from my diplomacy to France, I am not sure about you right now. We'll have to see what happens! To: TURKEY Tough spot you're in there. I don't know if I'll be able to help or not. To: ITALY It seems that you are the enemy of my new found ally. Rough life! To: RUSSIA I'd say that you don't have a chance, but then again, I'm only human so I could be wrong! --- >From Italy: To: EVERYONE Any Italian Press this turn is a forgery. --- >From Russia: Death to Austria. Nothing more need be said. --- >From Turkey: To: AUSTRIA You and Russia worked on me for three years and couldn't crack my defences. Now you want to finish me off single-handedly? You're an incompetent oaf who had the luck to sit next to an even more incompetent Russian. I shall take enourmous pleasure in spiking Italy's dam and in watching France devour you. One of you has asked that I count NVR (failed to vote) as a 'NO'. I don't think that this would be acceptable. You can't send in "perpetual" orders for your units, so I will treat votes the same way. There has also been a proposal to allow BLACK PRESS in this game. I understand that such a vote was taken at the beginning and was defeated by a wide margin, but just to confirm everyone's opinion on the matter I am calling for another vote. A change in the basic operation of such an important mechanism in the middle of a gunboat game will require UNANIMOUS approval. Press: Istanbul (AP): "The Sultan congratulates the ascent of the new Kaiser, and is glad to discover that he will continue the Anti-Catholic policies of his predecessor. `We have no desire to work with the Papist dogs. The fact that they are hinting at peace demonstrates their fear that they will be crushed. They should fear. Once we put a White garrison in Bulgaria and move some of the Tsar's reinforcements on to the front, we will finally outflank and crush them.' The annual new year's celebrations were further cut short by this urgent announcement." Smyrna (UPI): "Insurgents from the terrorist Mamluk resistance sabotaged the naval HQ at Smyrna and successfully detonated several explosive devices around the compound. The loss of life is unknown at this time, but suspected to be high. At last report, three fire departments from throughout the city were battling raging fires in different parts of the base. It is believed that the Officer's Club was hit, in which case, our naval defenses have suffered a drastic loss of battle-ready commanders." Nicosia (AP): "In light of the chaos rampant at our Smyrna HQ following the terrorist attack, the Palace has indefinitely lifted the press ban at this locale. Unfortunately, the lifting of the press ban, according to the Supreme Naval Commander, does not mean that the threat of Papist attack is any less real." Nicosia (UPI): "Several hours after the bombing, the Supreme Naval Commander has consulted with his special Task Force, and has the following announcement: `We have word that several of our top-of-the-line battle cruisers will be out for at least six months. The jewel of the Second Fleet, the HRHS Jihad, incurred serious blast damage to the hull. We have confirmation that the Officer's Club was indeed hit by a tremendous blast. It is believed there were no survivors. As our flagship will be out for an indefinite period of time and our Second Fleet high command has been more or less decapitated, I have authorized the Captain of the HRHS Jihad to oversee Second Fleet operations until a superior officer can be found. His first order of duty will be to retire the fleet from combat operations immediately. We will probably undergo several ship transfers after we have further assessed the situation. For our own part, we announce to our partners in ACA that this mishap will not affect our agreed upon plans. The Third and Fourth Fleets are still under instruction to directly assist the Tsar's southern fleet onto the eastern coast of our beloved client-state of Bulgaria. The First Fleet has been commandeered by OIL, but we can reveal that they will providing supporting operations in some fashion.' Curiously enough, there was no comment on the existence or non-existence of an impending Papist attack on this site." Pergamum (MUM): "In light of the recent chaos surrounding the oppressor's failed attack against the Italian ship, our recruitment has risen. We will drive the oppressor out. Our attack against their trivial Mediterranean headquarters is only the beginning. We will soon be attacking critical defensive points that will force the oppressor to fall." Winter 1905 LE PARISIEN Northern parts of France peaceful now London - All of northern France (the former British Isles) has returned to normal life now that the last threats from terrorists or enemy fleets are gone. The French high command has therefore decided to disband the army that controlled peace in Britain up to now. "We discussed the possibilities of using the army to liberate Belgium, but in the light of the latest political developments it was not needed." an army spokesman explained. King Louis declares peace to rest of Europe Paris - In a very emotional speech King Louis LXXIV., our beloved ruler, announced a complete French withdrawal from any fighting. "Our people have suffered from the permanent war of the last five years, and I do not want to enter history as 'Louis the Fighter'. France will therefore keep only enough troops to defend against possible attacks from its neighbours. I do hope that the rest of the European leaders will follow the French example and that peace and understanding will come to Europe again as it was before 1901. My military advisors have told me that there are still some naval operations to perform to establish a stable security line in the northern seas, but I promise that no attacks on any countries not already frenched will be done by French troops. To cite one gentleman from northern France: "This could be the peace of our time!". Winter 1905 THE PAPAL BULL 250 Lira "Perplexed Papal Press" Press Delayed Rome (VD) - Due to telegraph lines cut by Russian operatives in barrel submarines, the Italian Press was lost in transit for the Winter season. Normal press coverage will begin again in 1906. Those responsible will be shot. Kaiser Verwicklung Rebuilds German Navy The German Navy, bouncing back from its wanton destruction at the hands of Willhelm Der Grosse, has been re-established. "Flotte", the new Kaiser, announced that all the armed forces of Germany, and in particular the navy, would be run with a "new professionalism". Said Hans, "There will be no more of this sinking of our own ships. What we do now is to fight other people." Part of this new attitude in the German leadership seems to arise from distress at recent poll results calling the Germans "silly". "We are not silly," said the Kaiser. "We have to get our 'crazy' and 'conniving' ratings back up where they belong." Ex-Kaiser Begins Pilgrimage Barefoot, penniless, and verging on insanity, former Kaiser Willhelm von Wollheim struck out for Rome yesterday. No one believed that he would make it to his destination, except perhaps in a figurative sense. One onlooker expressed his sympathy: "Poor bugger. If he makes it there alive, it'll be a miracle." Not-So-Loyalists Open Talks With Government In a potentially historic moment last week, Jens "Keine Scheisse" Jans, chairman of the NSL party, came to the negotiating table with Kaiser Hans Verwicklung. Political analysts said that such a bold move on the part of both of those leaders might have been impossible, except for the "new professionalism" movement that is sweeping the nation. Pride in doing a job well, whether in ruling the country or picking up garbage, seems to be giving the German people a new sense of self-worth and common identity. If the talks succeed, the German government will be united for the first time since the turmoil that led to the installment of Kaiser Willhlem von Wollheim. The German populace is very eager for the vicious internal political fighting to cease. Verwicklung Denounces Grey Press Kaiser Hans (der Erste) today launched a savage attack on anonymous publication of position statements. Said Hans, "In principle, that is purely theoretically, I have no qualms about writing grey press. But when other people write it, that's where I draw the line. And anyway, it is action, not rhetoric, that is decisive. I note that I did not order the formation of a fifth army in Berlin. I think it is clear, too, that Russo-Turkish relations are not in danger. Long live the ACA!"
