There are no new proposals. Date: 9 Apr 91 09:45:00 EDT I apologize for the continuing confusion in getting Squalane restarted. I <DO> have spring orders in hand from all players except England and France. Some of you seem to have forgotten my previous message that the former English player, Darryl Marsee, had resigned. We were waiting for Eric Klien to give me a replacement. Unfortunately, there was a further delay in getting verification from Tomi "Pinky" Kaartama that he would be the new English player. Once I had that verification, I dropped the quickest note I could (a copy of the Winter results) setting a new Spring deadline. I apologize again for this mess and hope there will be no further problems. I'd be happy to recount gory details to anyone who is interested. The deadline next Monday will be VERY firm. I suggest that England and France drop me preliminary orders now and we will have deadlines on successive Mondays following as long as there are no further resignations. Sorry for the inconvenience, Jim Burgess (BURGESSJ@gar.union.edu) Spring '03 of the game BRUSILOV OFFENSIVE (MNC number not known) (Blind game, GM is norrish@st1.vuw.ac.nz/Michael Norrish) Austria : rouse@cpsc.ucalgary.ca/Jonathan Rouse England : ofoz@ihlpb.att.com/Steve Ozdemir France : leszczyn@buster.cps.msu.edu/Jon Leszczynski Germany : mad-2@kub.nl/Constantijn Wekx Italy : hardlj@druwa.att.com/Larry Hardouin Russia : daybell@aludra.usc.edu/Donald Daybell Turkey : sinhaa@mcmaster.bitnet/Anand Sinha Note from the Guest Publisher: Waiting for some folks to submit Spring orders. Spring '04 of the game CULLODEN (MNC number not known) (Gunboat game, GM is jjcarett@watami.waterloo.edu/David Gibbs) Date: Tue, 9 Apr 91 22:51:36 EST I am still missing orders from several players. I have orders from: England, France, Italy, Austria. I still need orders from: Russia, Turkey, Germany. At the rate you people are going, this game should be finished by early in the 21st century. Can anyone explain the delays? It isn't as if you have to talk to each other and experience email delays that way, so what is the big slow-down? Is there anything I can do to help speed things up? -David (Culloden GM) Spring '03 of the game GANDALF'S REVENGE (BNC number not known) (GM is jjt@naucse.cse.nau.edu/John Theisen) Austria : sinhaa@mcmaster.bitnet/Anand Sinha England : 7103_3417@uworax.uwo.ca/John Bryden France : ian@ksgibbs.harvard.edu/Ian Freed Germany : dougi@astro.as.utexas.edu/Doug Ingram Italy : steveb@cs.utexas.edu/Donald Marolf Russia : tedrick@ernie.berkeley.edu/Ted Tedrick Turkey : jf5irhmc@miamiu.bitnet/Jim Feldhouse Note from the Guest Publisher: Eric Klien is looking into this. I haven't received results from this game during the last couple of weeks. Fall '05 of the game GOODBYE BLUE SKY (MNC number not known) (Gunboat game, GM is snow@cololasp.bitnet/Martin Snow) Date: Wed, 10 Apr 91 11:44:55 EST Apologies for this being a bit late. There are a few things to tell you all. First of all, I'm heading off to England in a couple weeks. Second, one of our players has requested delaying our next turn until 15 April. As a consequence, this is the last turn for which I will be your GM. Your new GM is snow@cololasp.bitnet. He (she?) should be getting in touch with you all shortly. He will presumably set the next deadline for Autumn, which will probably be 15 April or so. Do not send me any more orders or press. While I'm in England, I intend to do a bit of travelling. If our European player(s) wish(es) me to drop him/her/them a line, my address for the summer will be 31 Elm Road Hereford, U.K. HR1 2TH (Phone) +44 432 270 018 I will probably not have email access while I'm in England. It is said that this decision has been made in the light | |of some handsome person speaking French but wearing the uniform of a | |German general and pointing a machine gun at the speaker's head. The | |speaker afterwards uttered something like 'Pardon me!'. Last years | |voting resulted only in minor feedback, but it is hoped that next years | |award will be given after great participation of all states. | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Fall 1905 THE PAPAL BULL 250 Lira | | "Pernicious Papal Propaganda" | | | | Italian Soldiers Dig In | |Athens (IPS) - Members of the Italian armies which participated in the | |sneak attack on Serbia, as well as those on the Russian frontier, began | |preparations for the winter by digging trenches, building bunkers, and | |laying minefields. "This defensive stance will only last until we are | |established in Bulgaria and Serbia", declared Field Marshal Romulus, | |"Our attack will be renewed in the spring, hopefully with devastating | |results to the Russian military." | | | |When Admirial Julius Ceaser heard the news to dig in, however, he went | |a bit bonkers (as if he already isn't batty enough) and asked | |rhetorically, "How does one entrench a battleship?". Following this | |statement, he immediately called for an all-out counter-attack on those | |trying to force the fleet from Bulgaria. Admirial JC was commended for | |this action, and will receive the Order of the Golden Chicken Award for | |Bravery in Rome next Spring. | | | | Italians Agree Not to Interfere in Franco-Russian Relations | |Rome (IPS) - Ambassador Machiavelli, after returning from his new | |appointment in Paris, issued a statement which declared that the | |Italian military would in no way commit to any action which would | |damage Franco-Russian ((sic)) relations without first consulting the | |French government. "We do not wish to anger the French in any way, and | |will thus not interfere in their affairs unless it is at their | |invitation.", declared the Ambassador. "Franco-Italian friendship is | |something need by both parties if we hope to survive the turmoil in | |Europe." | | | | Radio Free Germany Established | |Venice (IPS) - German not-so-loyalist forces, with the help of the | |Italian government, have established a radio broadcast in Venice | |directed at the loyalist Germans urging them to defect and fight the | |Russian horde to the south. The broadcast, done partially in German | |and partially in Italian, is a combination of victorious news from the | |Italians on the Balkan Front (about which the Germans obviously haven't | |heard) and inspirational messages directed at German not-so-loyalists | |still in Germany. One show which is especially favored by the Germans | |is the 22:00 broadcast, which featured Rome Rosie, who chides the | |German loyalists. | | | | Turkish Puppet Shows Banned in Rome | |Rome (VD) - The Pope himself today issued a proclamation which banned | |all Turkish-style puppet shows in the Rome area. when asked why, His | |Holiness explained that the Turkish puppet was not actually Turkish in | |origin but borrowed from the Russians. "Turkish puppets of the | |Russians is not something we like to see around here", the Pope | |proclaimed. He then went on to urge that the Turks develop their own | |cultural autonomy and break away from the domineering Russians. Sadis | |I summed up the argument be stating that, "if the Turks can develop | |their own culture, instead of borrowing from the Russians, we may even | |let them back into Rome." | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Fall 1905 LE PARISIEN | | | | Genoa harbour project started | |Marseille - In cooperation with their Italian friends the seamen of the | |French Med fleet started their work on the complete reconstruction of | |Genoa harbour. "We calculate that it will take at least one year to | |fullfill our great plans," a construction supervisor said, "but with | |the help of our Italian coworkers the result will be really gigantic!" | |The mayor of Genoa expects great economic welfare for the area due to | |the work of so many people. "It will be like in 1901, or even better!" | |he said at a press conference. | | | | French fleet retakes North Sea | |London - One year after the suprise attack of the Russian fleet the | |French marine has reconquered control of the North Sea. "They really | |had no chance!" a captain said, "They had only this 5-year-old fleet | |build for coastal operations. It was only good for the East Sea, | |nothing more!" The defeated Russian fleet has been seen fleeing east, | |but rumors talk about it being seen off the Yorkshire coasts. | | | | Uprising in Belgium - B-Belgian mobs raid the streets | |Brussels - In anticipation of a German attack on Belgium, the | |B-Belgians started an uprising against the government of Hercule | |Poirot, who is visiting France at the moment. "We will reinstate the | |good old two-class system we had before 1901!" a B-Belgian spokesman | |said, "i.e. first class citizens are we, and the French speaking | |<censored> are second class citizens, if they are allowed to survive at | |all." We remind our readers that it was this very undemocratic thinking | |that caused our beloved King Louis LXXIV. in 1901 to reestablish moral | |and peace in Belgium making Hercule Poirot president. | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | Coming Out Day In Germany | |In response to recent rumors that he is gay, the Kaiser Willhelm von | |Wollheim has declared an official, Germany-wide Coming Out Day. As he | |explained it, "We are having a rally to support my rule. Everybody | |better come out, or else." When questioned, however, about the | |possible erosion of support for his rule given the propaganda blitz of | |the Not-So-Loyalists and the recent military failures of his General In | |Charge of Lots of Stuff, Andre Pardon, he waffled visibly. "Do not | |mistake incompetence for abandoning ideals. We still hate the French. | |Also, do not mistake us for incompetents. It would be a mistake to | |support the French incompetently, a mistake that the Not-So Loyalists | |are mistaken in thinking. I do support thinking. It is a terrible | |thing not to have a mind. Any other questions?" | | | | von Wollheim Diagnosed HIV Positive | |The recent illness, confusion of thought, and aberrant behavior of the | |Kaiser all suddenly took on new meaning yesterday, as the word got out | |the Willy has an advanced case of AIDS. "It is now clear," said a | |noted von Wollheim authority, "that our Kaiser has for some time known | |that his death was imminent, and that he has been living in wild | |abandon to enjoy his last few years. It is said that hard times | |maginify the true character of a man, and with Willhelm this is | |particularly apparent. He is off the handle." Doctors could not say | |how long the Kaiser would live. | | | | Not-So-Loyalists in Disarray | |The recent "covert" arms shipments to the NSL party have backfired. In | |a bizzare turn of events, the waste management faction of the party, | |disgruntled at "having to do the dirty work", intercepted a shipment of | |arms en route from Rome to Berlin. Immediately applying their | |new-found clout, they staged a bloodless coup within their party. To | |present, however, the fallout seems to have been limited to renumbering | |the planks in the NSL platform to put "general improvement of hygiene" | |at a higher priority than "erecting monuments to the late Ilke von | |Ekle". Jens "Keine Scheisse" Jans has been elected the new party | |chairman. | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Istanbul (AP): "OIL reports that a semi-reliable source has predicted | |a major shift in Continental politics to occur in the near future. `We | |fear that the botched attack on the Papist left flank may indicate a | |shift in Orthodox thinking with regards to that Unholy alliance of | |Paris and Rome. ACA may soon break up, which is exactly what the | |Papists want. The French king, Persecutor of Britain, has offered | |peace with the Tsar in exchange for a partition of Germany. We fear | |for our German partner in this respect.' | | | |We remind the Tsar that a Franco-Russian peace will be slanted toward | |Paris as King Louis will have no hostile neighbors, while the Tsar must | |still contend with Rome. We also reiterate that our country is but a | |poor three centers whereas Italy, Serbia, and the rest of Austria is | |five. We cannot sit idly by as ACA collapses around it. We will do | |everything within our power to preserve our unity.' | | | |In other news, the Chief Director of OIL contested Papist claims that | |three agents had been captured in Venice. `It is just as we have been | |saying. No one can trust that "Papal Bull". They're still keeping up | |that nonsense over military flying carpets, and now this. We pulled | |out all our agents since the evil Papists turned on us in the first | |place. We admit to having agents within the French domain, but none | |remain within the Papist homeland.'" | |------------------------------------------------------------------------------| |Smyrna (UPI): "With the destruction of the Special Western Forces | |earlier this year, all defense rests on the Ottoman Navy. The | |breakdown of the Defense Minister, while unfortunate, was at least | |timed properly. There are no land forces so decisions can be made by | |the Supreme Naval Commander with little problem. While the OIL report | |leaves us with concern, we are confident that the Tsar has given the | |expected order to his southern fleet. We shall see what happens to our | |beloved client-state, and we will then know which way the winds blow." | Winter '03 of the game MASTERS OF DECEIT (BNC number not known) (Expert game, GM is prb@chinet.chi.il.us/Paul Botts) Austria : sullivan@osl380a.erim.org/Richard Sullivan England : ken@milton.bitnet/Ken Lowe France : pl436000@brownvm.bitnet/Jamie Dreier Germany : sinhaa@mcmaster.bitnet/Anand Sinha Italy : mad-2@kub.nl/Constantijn Wekx Russia : pinkse@vax.lse.ac.uk/Joris Pinkse Turkey : daybell@aludra.usc.edu/Donald Daybell Date: Tue, 9 Apr 91 18:06:34 CDT I still need winter orders from Germany and Turkey.
