They shall be performing training excercises in the Mediterranean Ocean. We also are pleased to commend our Venician Legion, they have completed their initial training and shall enter the Alps for advanced schooling. Finally, it is our pleasure to commend the performace of our Roman Legion. As a sign of their fine performance, they shall be vacationing in Venice. TO: Austria-Hungary. FROM: France. SUBJECT: Beware of Italy. My spies have discovered that a most disconcerting event is about to take place. Two of your bordering nations have signed a pact that may well lead to your distruction. The countries of which I speak plan to divide the Balkans between themselves and leave you with a pittance. This an open letter so that all the nations of Europe may arm themselves to properly deal with this developing menace. Sincerly, France. I have learned that France and Germany have a non-agression agreement. My guess is that they plan to attack either Italy or myself. Reuters News Service DATELINE: GENEVA Austrian diplomats here have filed a formal complaint against the Italian fishing industry charging that "they are using unfair practises to drive the Austrian fishermen from the Adriatic in a heinous attempt to secure a world monopoly on fish oil." Italian representatives were unavailable for comment in response to this grave charge. --------------------------------------------- GAME 1991 EP 101 Last Update: 28th January 1991 Gamename - The Somme Positions ========= -------------------- | Date: Fall 1901 | -------------------- Country Army Fleet ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Austria Bud, Ser Alb England Yor Nws, Nts France Par, Spn Mid Germany Kie, Mun Hol Italy Pie, Ven Ion Russia Ukr, Gal GoB, Rum Turkey Con, Smy Ank Notes ----- * - Unit retreating this season. ** - Unit disbanded. ------------------------------------------------- GAME 1991 EP 101 Last Update: 4th February 1991 Movements ========= -------------------- | Date: Fall 1901 | -------------------- Abbreviations ============= s - successful f - failed std - standoff rrq - retreat required for this unit Austria ------- A BUD -> VIE std Rus A GAL-VIE F ALB -> TRI std Ita A VEN-TRI A SER -> TRI --------"-------- England ------- F NWS - NOR s A YOR - BEL s F NTS Convoy A YOR - BEL s France ------ A Paris to Burgundy s F MAO to Portugal s A Spain to Marseille std Ita A PIE-MAR Germany ------- F HOL Stands s A KIE - DEN s A MUN - RUH (Ruhr) s Italy ----- F Ion- Tun s A Pie- Mar std Fra A SPA-MAR A Ven- Tri std Aus A SER-TRI and Aus F ALB-TRI Russia ------ Fleet Gulf of Bothnia moves to Sweden. s Fleet Rumania holds. s Army Galicia moves to Vienna. std Aus A BUD-VIE Army Ukraine supports Fleet Rumania. s Turkey ------ A BUL -> GRE s F CON -> BUL (sc) s A SMY -> CON s GAME 1991 EP 101 Last Update: 4th February 1991 Press Fall 1901 =============== Reuters News Service DATELINE (London) -- The British Minister of Fisheries and Hatcheries announced here yesterday that the world is not in danger of a shortfall in the world market for fish oil. "The North Sea Cod," he declared, "is infinitely superior to the Adriatic variety. About the only thing one can do with that sort is to top a pizza with it. Rather a harmless sort of monopoly, don't you think?" DATELINE (Munich) -- A young corporal of the German army, an Austrian by the name of Adolph, summed up the feeling in Germany on the mounting fish oil crisis: "Bah!" he declared eloquently, "We do not need fish oil to conquer France! They use enough in their salads and their hair, we will simply plunder that, and save ourselves the expense!" DATELINE (Marseilles) -- Rioting rocked this famous war-torn French city last week as angry mobs, fearful of the impending Italian invasion, protested the French army's retreat into Spain. Shops and markets were looted and burned by the hostile citizenry, and it is reported that of those establishments targeted, the first to go were the fish markets as panicked civilians sought to hoard what they could find of fish oil. England wishes to announce its ventures into Scandinavia. We hope to have peaceful negotiations with other countries in the area. We also wish to inform other nations of the British peace intentions. We have tried to contact several nations regarding such initiatives, but some have yet to respond. We sincerely hope this is unintentional and is not a sign of agression. We shall assume unspoken alliance unless actions prove such alliance to be impossible. Beware those of forked tongue. It considers this French territory and formally annexes this area into metropolitan France. The attacks from Italy and Germany in the last have been unprovoked aggression and France reserves the right to revenge how and when it sees fit. France announces the establishment of a new army in Brest made of volunteers who are well motivated and trained and will do honour to our glorious nation. It also announces the maiden voyage of its second fleet from Marseille. We are sure all our armies will serve to protect our nation against any aggression and will carry that protection into the enemy's heartland. Sources close to the Kaiser report that the Kaiser has decided that whoever had the gall to make this request deserves to get stripped of all his power and generally needs to just plain get his butt whipped for this kind of subordinance. He hereby offers aid to anyone who helps him against this ruler, guaranteeing safety to those who agree to help. --------------------------------------------- Greetings, This is a correction to Autumn 1907. So what I want to know is, why didn't Dostoyevsky just come right out and ASK? Why didn't he write: Dear Reader: Is there a God? It sure beats the heck out of me. Sincerely, Fyodor Dostoyevsky Here are some other famous works of literature that could have easily have been summarized in a few words: - Moby Dick: Don't mess around with large whales, because they symbolize nature and will kill you. - A Tale of Two Cities: French people are crazy. - Every poem ever written: Poets are extremely sensitive. -- Dave Barry, "Compressed Classics" *************** Austria (Tom Goodwin)......(F Aeg-Con), A Ser-Bul, A Gre S A Ser-Bul, A Rum S A Ser-Bul, A Bud S A Rum England (Bruce Beutel).....F Nwg C A Edi-Nwy, A Edi-Nwy, F NtS-Den, F GoB-StP(sc), A Bel-Ruh, A Hol S A Kie, A Kie H, F Den-Swe France (Brad Gillette).....A Pic-Bel, A Bur S Eng A Bel-Ruh, (A Mun-Ber), A Pie-Tus, F WMe-TyS Germany (Tim Moore)........*(A Ruh-Kie)* Italy (Stewart Winter).....F Ion-Tun, A Syr-Smy, F EMe S A Syr-Smy, A Apu-Ven Russia (Ted Fischer).......(F Bla-Con), F Sev-Arm, F Bal S Ger A Ruh-Kie, [A Ber S Ger A Ruh-Kie], A Sil-War, A War-Mos Turkey (Mattias Olofsson)..[F Con S A Smy], *[A Smy S F Con]*, *[A Bul S F Con]* Notes: () indicate bounced moves. Now that everyone is more or less back from any vacations, the game will, I hope, proceed at a weekly pace again. In this season, three units were displaced. Two of them, German A Ruh and Turkish A Bul, had no retreats and so were annihilated. This knocks the German out of the game, though of course he is still free to write press and so forth. The other displaced unit was Turkish A Smy, which had one open retreat to Ankara. This raises an interesting situation, however, for Turkey, who can if he chooses disband the retreating army and build F Ank this Winter. If the Turk wishes to disband the army rather than retreat to Ankara, he must do so immediately. If I do not hear from him, I will assume the retreat option and give Turkey no builds this Winter. After 24 hours have passed, whatever decision Turkey makes will be final so that everyone can plan their builds according to the Turkish retreat option, if necessary. I would like to make Winter 1903 builds due Wednesday, April 10, at 1 pm PST. ****************************************************************************** To join in the fun, send your name, home address, home and work phone numbers, and country preferences to Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com. ****************************************************************************** If you don't own Diplomacy, you can buy it at your local hobby store or from Avalon Hill directly.
