Diplomacy Zine -- EP #221 Chapter One From: rlister@cti1.UUCP (Russell Lister) Date: Mon, 11 Mar 1991 18:01:03 +0000 Issue #221 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL - Chapter One: A magazine devoted to the electronic mail playing of Avalon Hill's game Diplomacy. Coordinated by Eric S. Klien (see end of posting). ************************************************************************* ----------- Chapter One ----------- This chapter publishes results for the games AUSTERLITZ, BAGHDAD, BLACK OCTOBER, BLITZKRIEG II, DRAGONS, GET SOME, Gunboat game PASSCHENDAELE, and no press gunboat game KING'S GAMBIT. Publisher: Russ Lister (rlister@cti.com -or- uunet!cti1!rlister) Checker : Michael Norrish (norrish@st1.vuw.ac.nz) ----------- Highlights! ----------- ******* A bug in the Diplomacy Judge is discovered! Much to the dismay of the French and English Players in the game Dragons! ******* The Gunboat game Passchendael returns after a lengthy absence. Tensions mount in the game as Austria races to consolidate a stalemate line. ******* In the game Get Some, England's mighty fleets speed to put a bulldog bite on a very possible French win. Are Britania's jaws big and fast enough for the task? ******* And volumes of press from the game Austerlitz, voted the API/UPI high volume clearing house by this publisher. Don't these guys' fingers ever get tired? ----------- This Issue: ----------- Spring & Summer 1909 of GET SOME (EP #81) (GM is roger@nuacc.bitnet/Roger Safian) Fall & Autumn 1906 of DRAGONS (EP #75) (GM is loeb@geocub.greco-prog.fr/ Daniel Loeb) Fall & Winter 1908 of AUSTERLITZ (EP #71) (GM is loeb@geocub.greco-prog.fr/ Daniel Loeb) Fall 1902 of BLITZKRIEG II (EP #100) (GM is dougi@astro.as.utexas.edu/ Doug Ingram) Spring & Summer 1906 of BAGHDAD (EP #78) (GM is campbell@capsrv.jhuapl.edu/ Rich Campell) Fall 1907 of PASSCHENDAELE (EP #65) (GM is uunet!prism.gatech.edu!ccoprmd/ Matthew DeLuca) ============================================================================= Dragons -- Fall & Autumn of 1906 ============================================================================= Movement results for Fall of 1906. The old government collasped with remarkable speed. A man named Fuldegaul was the apparent leader of the revolution. French ambassadors worldwide are being replaced even now. All governments are asked to check in with these new ambassadors. ------------------------------------ Broadcast message from cebulad@physics.orst.edu as France in dragons: GACK! As you already know the Fall moves for Dragons went through last night. I have no idea why this happened. I had sent in conditional orders (I always like to have some orders, which I usually change as I talk with the other powers). I definitely SET WAIT when I sent these. Just remember I sent these conditional orders in assuming that all other powers were hostile AND at that time I had not yet received replies to ANY of my initial messages from the rest of you. I'm talking to Jamie and Ken at momment to try to figure out why this happened. -Dave (France) ------------------------------------ PL436000@brownvm.brown.edu as Master set the deadline for game dragons to Thu Mar 14 23:30:00 PST. Grace period deadline advanced to Sun Mar 17 23:30:00 PST. Broadcast message from PL436000@brownvm.brown.edu as Master in dragons: Hmm. I'm looking into the problem. Something definitely went wrong, Dave is right. I'm advancing the deadline AGAIN and I strongly suggest that no one send in another move until this stuff is straightened out. Ok? Sorry about the hassle. Jamie ------------------------------------ Broadcast message from PL436000@brownvm.brown.edu as Master in dragons: Dragons, Ok, here's my ruling. It is not reasonable to play the move over. Everyone has found out too much about the others' intentions. The last move stands as played. However, I should affirm the Frenchman's protest. He did indeed set wait, and the order was processed anyway. Circumstances conspired in this case. We uncovered a bug in the JUDGE program which was quite hard to force out into the open. None of you should worry about your orders being processed in general before the deadline if you set wait, since (a) it happened only because of a strange way in which I brought Dave into the game, and (b) the bug is fixed now. So, don't hold it against Dave, but consider it a fait accompli. Dragonmaster Jamie ------------------------------------ Retreat orders for Fall of 1906. Lydick Tsar of all Russias, Currently inspecting the troops in Ankara. ------------------------------------ PRESS (Mk II) Dateline: Ankara. Frank Schnooze As the sun rose on this day, the fourth of March, 1909, I saw the most impressive sight ever witnessed by this reporter. The Tsar's national guards, under the impressive leadership of General Extremus Postulatius, a superb military tactician of Carthagi nian descent, had the troops arrayed in rank and file, dress uniforms shining in the early, per-dawn sun. The wind blew silently and bobbled the plumes on the officers' helmets. As the sun had just cleared the Eastern mountains, the troops were awed by the sight of their leader, Tsar William III, emerge from one of the nearby buildings. He stepped up to the platform in front of the troops, and spoke: "Thank you all for coming, although I WOULD have had the lot of you shot if you hadn't, but that's beside the point. You're here and that's all that matters. I guess by now you're all wondering WHY I've called you here if it isn't to have you shot. Wel l, ...UNDER MY RULE YOU CAN'T WONDER THOSE THINGS...!!! However, I'm going to tell you anyway. We are here at the request of the French scum so that they can view the works of art in our cities unhindered. The problem is that they have been accused of stealing works for the Louvre(imagine that...naming a museum after a type of window blind..). We have therefore transferred all of the valuable pieces to the Turkish sector. The Turks were gracious enough to act as our front guard, but their losses were so great that their troops had to be absorbed into our ranks. Now, any questions?" (A private stands up.) "Um, yes sir." "What's your name, son?" "Private Parrts, sir" (A shot rings out.((It was a dark and stormy night--circa Snoopy))) (Private Parrts has been shot in the leg.) "Sit down son, and SHUT UP! Now, any questions?" (Another man stands up, this time a battle-scarred veteran) "Yes sir, where'd my MORIA game go?" "Two windows down on the left..." "Thank you, sir." (Grovels for three hours, then is allowed to leave.) "NOW, any _more_ questions?" (ANOTHER soldier stands up.) "Well?" "I'm Corporal Loebs, sir?" "Ahhhh. Corporal Loebs, the man about whom I have heard so much." "Yes, sir." "The one who defended the Germans with so much vigour and the Austrians with so much bravado?" "The same, sir." (Smiles meekly) "Guards, take this man out and have him shot. Don't these people ever learn? How can the average soldier feel good about himself when all these heroes are running about the war, being BRAVE and HEROIC? Anyway, any more questions?" (The air is silent, the ground is silent, and, coincidentally, the troops are silent, too.) "Well, then, dismissed." However, compared to other similar organizations she suffers more than her share of leaks. Senior officers commented that these leaks are not so much the result of penetration by other intelligence organizations, such as the Turkish Grey Wolves, but rather the enthousiastic mentality of it's junior officers. Fortunately, the information thus far leaked to outside sources have not been damaging to French intelligence and military activities. Question is, how long will the FSS wait for such an incident to occur? An internal report on Central Europe surfaced in Prussia two days ago. The report was intercepted by the Kaiser's Gestapo. According to Major-General Klaus von Dueren, the intercept of the report was mere coincidence. One of his agents noticed an abandoned briefcase in the bathroom of Kaiser Thomas Central Station. The rest is history. The report mentions the recent success of FSS and MI6 in organizing the Warsaw under- ground resistance movement, the Polish Nationalist Army (PNA), which will direct its efforts to the liberation of Warsaw from turkish oppression and then join the Alliance via the German Confederacy. The report also mentions the outcome of several meetings with top intelligence officers in Vienna. Lt.Col. C. Overt has stated that the report was a fake one, planted in the bathroom of the Prussian station for Turkish intelligence officers: dis- information. "It was a poorly organized ploy by both the FSS and MI6. The resp[onsible (junior) officer did not coordinate the operation with the Gestapo which resulted in an innocent blunder." Sources in the ministry of Defense, however, commented that the report was indeed a leak as they have evidence that the Turkish reign in Warsaw may soon be a historical fact. Furthermore, sources in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have confirmed meetings of top intelligence officers in Vienna. Thus we conclude that "The truth is merely a lie which has not yet dismasked". signoff ------------------------------------ Movement results for Fall of 1908. The dinner was attended by heads of state as well as top military officers. The Duke of Brest and the Marquis du Tj'In toasted His Majesty King James I for the substantial contribution of the English warmachine in the latest victory. Kaiser Thomas was also thanked for his commitment to the Alliance by King James. "Let it be noted that the Kaiser's confidence and trust in the Alliance is and will continue to be a crucial ingredient in the recipe for Allied success!" Generals Edward Cambridge (RBA) and Kurt von Beieren (KA) expect northern Allied troops to run over the Russian territories within a few years. The generals were not willing to comment on the use of the feared German tactic, Blitzkrieg or the direction of the campaign. General Cambridge noted however "With our esteemed French collegue, Admiral Jean-Jacques Rapier, tying down 90% of the Turkish warmachine with a force 50% less than the Turks, and of course the support of Admiral Pentangelli, we do not expect too much resistance." ------------------------------------ Broadcast message from STAL031@KUB.NL as France in aust: Le Figaro - BLOODY DEMONSTRATION AGAINST CZAR IN WARSAW AND SEVASTOPOL In Warsaw yesterday, thousands of Poles marched towards the residence of the Czar to express their dissatisfaction with his regime. What should have been a peaceful demonstration turned into a massacre as the Czar's Kozaks attempted to end the demonstration with physical force. Casualties are in the hundreds and the number is expected to increase as medical supplies are scarce. Thus far there has been no statement from the Czar or his government. The PNA has found great support from the Polish people and has thus far succesfully executed a number of small scale operation including sabotage of military logistic materials. The PNA has also requested medical aid via agents in Prussia. France is expected to finance the majority of the aid package as English and German resources are allocated to the build up of military strength. This paper has also received unconfirmed reports of demonstrations in Sevastopol. There employees of the Czar Rick Shipbuilding Yard alledgedly commenced a strike to protest the low wages, inadequate food supply and the restriction on free sex. The strike would have been knocked down by the Czar's Secret Police. Captain Wolenski of the PNA has stated that his organization has made contacts in Sevastopol and expects an organized resistance movement within two weeks. "The Russians are simple farmers. They don't want anything to do with war. That's a luxury of the nobles. All they want is to be left in peace and they don't want any Turks in their villages and homes... I think that has been the spark that has caused the expression of resentment." signoff ------------------------------------ Broadcast message from westerm@bchm1.aclcb.purdue.edu as Russia in aust: A letter to the editor of the "Le Figaro": In your article of the other day entitled "BLOODY DEMONSTRATION AGAINST CZAR IN WARSAW AND SEVASTOPOL" you managed to get most of the facts correct -- the riots, the general dissatisfation of the way the war is going, the low wages, and the feeling that the wars is being fought by us peasents for the luxury of the nobles -- however you made one error. You said we do not want "any Turks in their villages and homes...". This is incorrect. We would welcome the Turks; they would provide stability and a good government. What we fear is the wrath of the English and, especially, the German dogs. Rape and pillage will be the least of what we could expect if they invaded our fair countryside. For this reason, and this reason alone, we have been forming a militia unit to fight theses devils until they are off Russian soil. Only then will there be peace. Here are the standard doctor mutters, translated to laymen's terms: - "Uh huh" : This means "Oh my God." - "Ummm" : This means "Good Lord." - "Ah hah" : This means "I vaguely remember seeing a case like this in medical school, but it hadn't advanced nearly this far." After the doctor has finished prodding you, either he will send you to the hospital, which will give you a battery of extremely humiliating tests designed to weed out people who are not serious about being hospitalized, or he will call the drugstore and order you a small bottle of pills that costs $34.38. I figured he might try to bounce me from North Africa as I try to move there. If you are in Spain next turn then please support me into MAO with everything that you can spare and then we will be formidable. If not, I will support your fleet GOL into Spain for the Spring. You will have to cut as much support as you can though to make it possible. A-E,G: You guys are a pain in my tail! To bad I'm going to get through the stalemate line this time. :-) A-F: I'm sure that I can convince the Italians to leave you alone if you would start hitting on the Germans and the English a little bit. What do you say? A-R: Congratulations on a game well played! You gave me the slip for a lot longer than I expected you would. I hope we can play again sometime. England -> All: Hope everyone had happy holidays! Now back to warfare! England -> Italy: More poison gas heading your way! England -> Austria: I hope you did in the Italians finally. His back door is wide open. Make yourself comfortable! England -> France: OK. I'm moving out of the channel and continuing my policy of Italian containment. Hopefully, Austria sat on Tunis this fall. Glad you retook the MAO. Let's keep the A/I people bottled up! England -> Germany: Thanks for the support into StP. I hope that you can support StP holding since I have had to send F Bar-Nwg westward to deal with the Italians. F Fin S English A StP H, plus A StP H secures the north end of the stalemate line. The next section of the line involves Berlin and Munich. A word of caution: I wouldn't get too carried away with an offensive against Austria. Too many things can go wrong, quickly. Disbanding of armies can be really a really bad thing. Be careful. The main thing to keep in mind is that you have to hold onto Berlin and Munich. This can be done by: A Ber H F Bal S A Ber H A Mun H A Ruh S A Mun H A Kie S A Mun H You have to hold that, or some other version of it, at all costs. The supply centers are what matter. Given the number of units that Austria has, I can't see you having much success with an offensive against him. It may be boring, but maintaining the above defense will irritate him more than anything else! Think stalemate! Depending on how this fall goes, you may be rebuilding a disbanded army. If so, it goes without saying to make it an army and build it in Kiel. In the spring, try to get into position to hold that stalemate line. Munich is the key since he will be able to bring three units to bear on it eventually. Maybe do A Kie-Ruh, C A Pru-Kie, etc. Munich is vulnerable. Retaking it may not be easy. Anyway, I hope you don't mind this advice. Just some thoughts. Don't worry about an offensive or about Pru/Sil/Boh. Concentrate on defending Munich and Berlin. The only danger is getting hit very hard by Austria and not having enough armies to hold that line. Note, it takes at least three armies (the unit in Berlin could be a fleet). Thanks for your help and let's keep adding bricks to this wall. England -> France: On the subject of this stalemate line... The southern end requires holding Bur, Mar, Por and MAO among other things. I know you have your hands full, so I'll support anything I can. Just let me know what I can do. Right now it looks like we can hold on: A Mar H A Gas S A Mar H F MAO H (with support from me) F Por S F MAO H If they ever get an army into Spain, things change. However, I imagine that you might have retaken Spain this fall. This whole area changes every season, so I'll shut up now. You have my support - good luck in fending them off! Keep up the good work! France --> Europe Long live the Allies. I apologize for my setback in Spain/Marseille; we sahll attempt to reddem French honor with our cleverness this turn. Napoleon German press: To England: One small blow for freedom... sigh. I will keep your army in STP. I would appreciate you supporting me into livonia (even if I dont go). As to the rest of the world, good luck in poping that italian army. Pray france can hold. To France: Can you stop him? I hope so. Remember, dont play for the smashing offensive victory, play for the stalemate. To AH: Remove all you forces from my boders and I will spare you. ;-) (seems like you have played a good game, hope it stops there) To AH (care of Italy): I think your western forces are doing well, but could use some direct leadership. How about putting a real army in rome. When does the big slaughter begin? To Russia: Form a garison inside of the town and make him seige you out... oops wrong game (maybe you should try macheavelli) To All: If all goes well, I will be in a stalemate position at the end of this and will sit back and thumb my nose at ah as he batters against the unbreakable resolve of the german people. Fortunately, if I succeed in this turn AH will realize there is only one way to go (smile). Press ----- Sorry no press from Italy. GM - All: Okay, there's one unit in retreat, and it's a pretty easy one; could we get that in by Tuesday? We've lost two countries, both this year, and both to Austria. Anyone else see a trend here? :-) There's lots of builds/disbands out there. Unless you absolutely have to wait to see what France does with his retreat, let's try to get those in by Tuesday, as well. We have an A/E/F/G/I draw proposal on the table, as well...send your votes in by Tuesday. Tuesday is a very important day. :) Spring 1908 orders will be conditional on builds, of course...although Friday would be an excellent time for those, if we're on time with the builds. We're hitting the home stretch of the game...
