I'll be happy to stay in the fertile grounds of Ukraine and Warsaw. France: Once again, I'm the whipping boy for Western propaganda. Let's look at the supply center count, assuming England gets Sweden: England: 7 France: 8 Austria: 8 Gosh, I'm almost 55% as strong as the Anglo-French alliance! What a powerhouse! Bow down and worship me before I destroy you! And I have four neighbors on all sides, while the Westerners have their backs clear! It's so unfair for the poor little dears! Germany: The French have shown their true colors. Why do you spurn my help? Go check the history of the game -- I have never made an aggressive move against my fellow Kaiser. Because I'm a sweetheart? No -- I want you for a buffer, and I'd rather not watch your foes move eastward like a reverse Mongol horde. My army in Tyrolia can be really useful for you. Please please PLEASE let me know what you want me to do with it. Italy: We must support Germany before it's too late. You barely held off the French; once France gets a few more supply centers and a peaceful front in the north, you're through. I realize you probably don't want to antagonize France. But he has proven himself to be extremely aggressive, and I believe that the best defense is a good offense. Russia: "Death to Austria"? Does that mean we're not going to the prom? Look, Warsaw was enough for me. It's pretty obvious that St. Pete isn't enough for England; maybe Sweden and Moscow will be. Do you want to get whittled down to Sevastopol just to spite me? Concentrate your forces against England. Get rid of the Sevastopol navy, and let me know what you want Warsaw and Ukraine to do. I'll be more than happy to use them in your defense. Turkey: As promised, I'm taking shore leave in Greece; I hope to watch Fleet Aegean move a decent distance away. Now let's talk business. I tried to attack you; it didn't work. We haven't had any conflict for several seasons, except for some (forged) arguments in the press. If you were more powerful you would have some interest in helping England and France advance; but in the current situation they would win the game before you could grow to a decent size. I want to intervene in the West. I can't do so unless I have some assurance that you'll leave me alone. What can you do for me? The Times: ========== England -> France I think that we're finally breaking through against Germany. Once my fleets can get into the Baltic, that should be the end of him. Hopefully, I took Sweden this turn without losing any other centers - I plan to build in Edi. Austria would seem to be our next opponent. Hopefully, you and Italy can cooperate in the Med against him. Good luck...I expect to be facing Austria over the remains of Russia soon. This is my only press message this turn. Anything else is black press. La Parisienne: ============== TROOP REDUCTIONS IN MEDITERRANEAN REGION (Marseilles, Fall 1904) Due to the Italian withdrawal, French forces in the Mediterranean were reduced. The members of the 2nd fleet are enjoying some much-needed rest in Spain. The government urges the Italian forces to take advantage of the peaceful Mediterranean situation and take measures to control the Austrian menace. "French policy towards the Italians will continue to be peaceful if such actions are taken," the President said. "It is our sincere hope that the Pope will act responsibly in this matter." PRESIDENT APPLAUDS ENGLISH ACTIONS (Paris, Fall 1904) The President expressed continued happiness with the Anglo- French alliance. "I sincerely hope we can continue to support each other," the President said. "The only party that gains anything from war between our great nations is Austria." French military leaders will be meeting with English leaders to plan future strategies. GROWING CONCERN ABOUT AUSTRIAN JUGGERNAUT (Paris, Fall 1904) Austrian expansion continues unchecked. With Russia in the seemingly unbreakable grasp of Austrian military power, and an already-weakened Turkey, there is cause for great concern. The French government believes that the Austrian expansion must be stopped. To this end, we applaud the Turkish and Russian resistance, and pledge to offer whatever support we can to aid their efforts. PEACE TALKS WITH GERMANS BREAK DOWN (Burgundy, Fall 1904) The commander of the anti-German operations reported a breakdown in peace talks. As a result, offensive maneuvers were resumed. "We regret that a peaceful solution could not be found," the President said. "However, the German leaders do not appear to be fully committed to our proposed cooperation to control Austria. One season, they discuss 'crushing activity' on the Austrians, the next they talk of supporting Austrian dances in Warsaw! If they cannot firmly commit to something, we will have no choice but to clear them out of the way." Berlin Bugle: ============= G-F: If I remember correctly, the French are screwing with me so I am going to screw with them. If I am wrong, oh well, I just made a mistake. G-I: Should we do something to help each other out? G-World: Ummm...The Austrians are getting kinda big! Roman Herald: ============= To Austria & France: Nobody do anything hasty, ok? I wouldn't like either of you to do anything on my account, that you'll regret in the morning. To Turkey: Unless you plan to either sail a fleet past Austria or convince France to stir up unrest in the Med, the Italian dam may prove to be beyond your 'spiking'. To everyone else: Any other press from Italy is a forgery. The Vatican has promised to excommunicate anyone found making false statements in the name of Italy. Moscow Gazette: - =============== Ankara Bulletin: ================ To Austria: I thought your offer of Greece was too good to be true. Let up on us little guys, France & England are pouring it on and when Germany colapses you will be out of position to hold them. How about giving me back Bulgaria and supporting Russia in Moscow against the English threat? You can be the big fish down here and secure your back and turn to meet the growing western threat. What more could you want from us weasels? Italy: Get back into the Ionian where you belong! How long will you stand once Austria eliminates Russia and Turkey? Maybe Turkey would like some support into Greece, maybe he would support you, either way Austria is too big and needs contained now. To Italy: Austria is going to grow and the builds will be on YOUR border. France has backed off. Let's act together. If you move into the Ionian, I will then order Fleet Aegean - Greece and Fleet Con - Bulgaria, expecting your support for the attack on Greece. I am not asking for a holy war against Austria, just that we even things up a bit. Wouldn't another Italian unit make you feel more secure? I can swing up into Bulgaria and you can take over Greece. You've protected Austria's open side for a long time with no compensation. He owes it to you. To Russia: Assuming you still have a unit in Sev and that your fleet didn't invade Ankara, my unit potentially in Armenia will support Sev. I would appreciate you disbanding the Black Sea fleet in exchange, should you need a disband. GM's Corner: ============ (Bern) President Constantijn of the Free Swiss Republic was outraged when he learned how the European postal services had malfunctioned. "FOUR EMPERORS LATE?? WHO THE HELL DO THEY THINK THEY ARE??", he screamed. "WHERE ARE THEY?? OFF WITH THEIR HE.... uh.... THEIR uh.... ummm. THEIR NOSEHAIRS!! THAT WILL TEACH THEM." Paris - No answer to the universal peace proposal of King Louis LXXIV., beloved ruler of all of France (from Lisboa to Edinburgh), has reached the French government yet. A speaker expressed the King's will to stand with his offers. "There might be some discussion about who is to control what area of the northern seas, but all in all France doesn't want any more fighting to occur." Experts concluded that if France sticks to that position it will be able to defend its current positions even if other nations keep on attacking it. King Louis visits Rome Paris/Rome - "It's been much to long since I have been here on this holy earth to visit my friend and brother in faith pope Sadis I." the king said after leaving the ship that brought him into the Italian capital. "Friendship and cooperation between us are going on for so long now, and even the every-year celebration days have become so common; it's really a miracle and I want to thank the pope for this very example for love and peace between two nations. Hopefully other nations in Europe will see how good peace is to them and stop attacking each other. France made a big step into that direction, now it's up to the others!" Talks between the pope and the king and between their high ranking officials are supposed to take at least four days. Spring 1906 THE PAPAL BULL 250 Lira "Prestigious Papal Press" Admirial JC Awarded Highest Honor Rome (VD) - Admirial Julius Ceaser was awarded Italy's highes honor, the Order of the Golden Chicken Award, by His Holiness, Pope Sadis I, for his brave counter-attack which managed to "keep the world safe for Catholicism". With this award Julius joins the elite ranks of the few other winners of the award, men such as Field Marshal Romulus and Colonel Sanders. Unfortunatly, the cerimonies were cut short when it was reported that the Turkish fleets were moving towards the Bulgarian coast. JC rushed to Naples to board the HPS Holy Avenger and rush east to defeat this latest attack of the islamic horde, which is destined to fail. Barrel Submarines Opperating in Eastern Mediterranean Athens (IPS) - Naval Intelligence stationed in Athens has reported Turkish barrel submarine activity to the east of here, and Admirial JC has been ordered to investigate the situatuion. Two days ago, the Admirial left Athens headed east into the coastal waters of Cyprus on a search and destroy mission. He has not reported back yet on his success, but rumor has it that he has occupied the isle of Cyprus, and is now using it as a staging area for an invasion of mainland Turkey. All rumors are, of course, denied by the Italian government. ITALY Claims Responsibility for Terrorist Attack Rome (IPS) - The Italian Terrorist Attack Leauge Youth-group, better know as ITALY, has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Smyrna navalyards last winter which obliterated the Turkish fourth fleet, severly crippling the Turkish capicity to make war. Although the claim is still unconfirmed, the evidence seems to indicate that this is true. Several designer-label commando suits were found in the general vicinity of the attack, and since that date, many merit badges for Terrorist Attack, Outdoor Survival, and Mortar Proficiency have been issued. We congatulate these youths. Piedmont to Be Given to French Genoa (IPS) - In a tearful ceremony the Mayor of Genoa handed over the deed to the provience of Piedmont to the French authorities. "After all that they have done for us," sobbed the mayor, "it is only fair that we show our gratitude by giving tham something in return." After the cesession ceremony, there was much celebration, and much wine and pasta was consumed. Because of the oil slick, there was unfortunately no swimming, by skiing on the revitalized Alps proved to be a popular activity. This is a day that will live forever in the hearts and minds of the French and Italian people, who are to be friends forever. Trieste Defense Force Ordered to Help Pilgrims Trieste (IPS) - The Pope today ordered commander El Duce, commander of the TDF, to help any pilgrims wishing to pass through Russian occupied territory, be they peon or Kaiser. The TDF immediatealy complied with the order by deploying along the north border and supporting German pilgrims which were moving south into Russian occupied Tyrolia. With this small gesture, perhaps the link between German and italy will become stronger, convincine the German people to turn east and fight their agressor, and not their friends in the west. Press: Istanbul (AP): "The Sultan praised the Supreme Naval Commander's new plan of action in ousting the Papist threat from the Balkan region. `Temptations abound to try to remove us from ACA. But, as co-founders, with our good friend, the Czar, we cannot be privy to these silly proposals. We remain committed to ACA 110%, and we wish the Czar good luck in both northern and southern naval endeavors. We believe this shift in strategy will force the Papists out of our beloved client-state, and bring new troops into Romania, stretching the Papist line further. Long live ACA.' Once again, witnesses reported seeing machine-gun mounted flying carpets in the vicinity of the Great Mosque, but the Defense Ministry could not comment, as their leader remains under close-watch hospitalization." Nicosia (UPI): "After three years of preparation for an errant Papist invasion, the Supreme Naval Commander is now positive that this will be the year of the attack. `Our past reports have come in from OIL agents, but look how badly trounced they were in the land campaign, just last year. We are relying on strictly naval intelligence now. And there is no reason to believe that the invasion will not commence soon. I would also like to add that reports of infighting between His Royal Highness' Navy and OIL are completely unfounded. These are vicious, baseless, misguided rumors that have been started by that organization to reduce our credibility, and force the blame on the only surviving remnant of our defense forces, the Navy.' This reporter declines to comment." Diplomatic Communication from the Kaiser to the Czar: Oh most noble and exalted one, I crave thy ear. You have shown yourself to be a man of action, a dynamic and agressive fighter. Therefore I divine, as a professional military man, how galling it must be for you to man a defensive formation. Your armies garrisoned in Scandanavia, fierce fighters though they are, can have at best a passive role in a naval war. How often have I dreamed of the military potential that would arise were only those armies magically to become fleets? (Not for nothing am I nicknamed "Flotte".) The French naval position would deteriorate rapidly. Indeed, the strategic position of the ACA in the northern regions would be so overwhelming, (I assume here the eventual construction of a third fleet in North Russian Navy.) that even the addition of a fifth fleet to the Northern French Navy could not stave off a smashing French defeat. Alas! men who dream must still awake. The severe pressure applied by the French armed forces have left no opportunity to bring the reconfiguration of the armed forces of the ACA from the paradise of dreams to the pigsty of reality. A bitter pill to swallow, it has indeed been. Irksome though it is, defense is yet preferable to defeat. But now (exploding suns!) the French have temporarily halted military operations. What malady has stricken King Loius, I know not, but men who are of sound mind must re-assess the situation in light of his insanity. Suddenly and unexpectedly, the northen forces of the ACA have been presented with an opportunity to transform their position dramatically, as if the gods indeed intended that they should be victorious. My plan is this. The shipyards of Kiel are fully operational, and are ready at a moment's notice to undertake the construction of a second fleet. Such a fleet would immediately bring dynamic pressure to bear on the French. Yet my empire is already employing its resources to the fullest to guard against French advances on land. In short, I have not the raw materials to construct another fleet. I humbly beg, therefore, that my lone existing fleet, stationed now in the Helgoland Bight, be allowed to dock in Denmark, and ship the abundant natural resources of the area to Kiel for immediate use. The proud Russian fighters currently stationed in Denmark could find a noble retirement as Sweedish farmers. I could not adequately express the gratitude I would feel towards your highness if such a plan were to find favor in your royal judgement. My thankfulness would be everlasting. Everlasting too, the glory of the Czar, who, as a consequence of his own wisdom, would soon have dominion over the North Sea, and England as well, in the due course of history. Your Humble Ally, Kaiser Hans Verwicklung Post Script: I have recently become aware of the presence of Frech InSecurity agents within my empire. I know that no message I might send would be free from their prying eyes. I fear, therefore that King Louis will quickly regain his senses and slam shut this window of opportunity. To prevent French trickery, I must beg that the White fleet patrolling the Skaggerak lend its support the movement of the German fleet into Denmark. This way, the doom of the French will be unavoidable. King Louis is in any case powerless to prevent the eventual construction of an addition Russian fleet in St. Petersburg. The opportunity to expand the German Navy is, in contrast, likely to be possible only in this moment that the French are behaving passively. Let us seize this opportunity to transform our position from one of static defense to one of aggressive, dynamic potential. Date: Fri 10 May 91 09:02:16-PST GOODBYE BLUE SKY SUMMER 1906 RESULTS TURKEY: Retreat to Smyrna DEADLINE FOR FALL 1906 MOVES IS TUESDAY MAY 14, 1991. **************************************************** "The Czar is in complete agreement with the Kaiser's recent proposal" (Geneva) The European press council is preparing its famous voting on press which will take place during the fall & autumn season. The results will be published in winter, if possible, else next spring. All European press people - even those from mute eastern powers - are invited to give their ranking of the press that was published between winter 1904 and summer 1906. There has also been a proposal for a special prize for an "outstanding single article" which will be given only if at least two` countries agree upon a single article (season, year, publisher and title/ first line are sufficient). Summer 1906 LE PARISIEN Louis LXXIV. "The Peaceful" repeats peace offer Paris - King Louis LXXIV., now called "The Peaceful" due to His efforts in reestablishing peace in all of Europe, has repeated His offer to stop the war immeadiatly at the status quo: "The German Kaiser has misinterpreted my search for peace as weakness, even insanity. In my strive for peace I will forgive him his harsh words and ask the whole German nation and especially its ruler as well as all other European nations to join the French efforts for peace." French navy perserves status quo in northern oceans Edinburgh/London - The French navy has successfully followed its orders to keep the positions in Europe's north stable. The only activity came from a probably hostile German fleet that entered the North Sea around Helgoland. Admiral Jean-Luc Glucgluc announced that "our fleets will have no problem to hold their positions in fall." Piedmont becomes free trading zone Genoa - After the heartbreaking ceremony that put Piedmont under French control nearly seven weeks of Italo-Franco parties took place all across the newest French province. King Louis LXXIV. "The Peaceful", our beloved ruler, said the enormous gift from His friend Pope Sadis I. came so unexpected that He could not help the tears of happiness about this fine gesture of friendship. "We cannot accept such a gift without making it an everlasting proof of the big and unfailable alliance between Italy and France" the King said. "Together with my secretary of economics, Paul LaMoney, I therefore decided to make Piedmont and its harbour Genoa the first European free trading zone. This means that everybody can trade in Genoa without paying taxes etc. This should boost the economic welfare not only of Italy and France, but also of all other European states and should enable them to turn their backs to war and fighting and instead build up economic power and lifestyle for their people." Press: Istanbul (AP): "The Sultan, having briefly emerged from an alcoholic stupor while celebrating the end of his college career, praised the success of the joint naval operation with the Tsar's southern fleet. `We will soon push those <hic> accursed P-p-p-apists back where they belong <hic>. Our task in the Black Sea is complete, and we <hic> would ask that the Tsar order his navy to support our fleet back to protect the capital.' Having expounded this profound advice, he promptly collapsed again." Date: Fri 10 May 91 11:04:30-PST Note from GM: Sorry about the confusion over SUMMER. The scientists explained that a phenomenon know as gamius speedus upus in the upper atmosphere has caused the season of Summer to completele dissappear, thus jumping straight from Spring to fall. The members of the Papal Bull staff are still exploring this strange event, and have thus been too busy to write anything. Hopefully by next spring, all will be explained, and the paper will return to normal publication. It ios just hoped that Autumn doesn't dissappear as well.
