Let's get those orders in!! Jim Date: 30 May 91 11:32:00 EDT GAME DELAYED AGAIN: I'm sorry for these persistent delays, but the new Turkish player did not last. He resigned after one set of moves. Now we await yet another new player. I only can run this for a couple more weeks, for which I apologize, I would not have taken on the standby GM role if I hadn't thought that we would be able to finish the game up before summer. As soon as Eric Klien gives me a new standby, I'll set a new deadline, probably next Monday, the rest of you may change your orders if you wish. I would hate to call this a draw when there seems to be a bit of uncertainty in the result. Thanks for your patience! Press: Vienna Tribune: =============== THE TITLE OF AN HISTORICAL FIGURE WHO RAN YOUR COUNTRY (All): I'm dictating this off the top of my head, just under the deadline, so bear with me. LORD PROTECTOR (England): Hey pal. Looks like we're allies now, or at least friendly non-belligerents. EMPEROR (France): Now that Italy has betrayed me, leaving himself wide open in the West, you could be a nice guy and back him up. And Saddam Hussein could marry Madonna! Take Tunis, and any other Italian center you desire. I'll grab Venice and whatever else you leave me. KAISER (Germany): Hang tough with the navy. Pressing matters will distract me (and hopefully France) for a while. IL DUCE (Italy): If you want to avoid the fate I've promised France, get friendly real soon. I liked things the way they were, and I won't be upset (well, _too_ upset) if you retreat. GRAND PRINCE (Russia): Don't rock the boat. I will continue to support you with whatever armies I leave behind in Warsaw/Ukraine. SULTAN (Turkey): Okay, I'll give you Bulgaria. In return, I expect you to remain friendly while France and I pop Italy. If France does stand behind Italy, we will need to make a stand (I think we can agree that a French supply center count of, say, 15 after Paris stabs Rome would be a bad idea). Let's see what France does in the Fall, then plan our moves in the Winter press. If you support me, you will gain territory and I will be chastened to a more natural size. If you betray me, you may get an extra supply center or two -- and France will be in the Ionian and the Balkans. The Times: - ========== La Parisienne: ============== ENGLISH MISADVENTURES CAUSE UPROAR IN WAR DEPARTMENT (Paris, summer 1905) The English naval problems caused quite a stir here. "We sincerely regret the loss of the North Sea, and urge the Royal Navy to regain control of that most vital area immediately," said the President. "We will place a fleet in the Mid-Atlantic Ocean, and will be ready to assist the English efforts in any way possible. We want to get this crisis behind us as soon as possible." AUSTRIAN "SHIELD" BECOMES A "STORM" (Rome, summer 1905) The minister to the Pope was extremely pleased by the Italian invasion of Austria. "This is a monumental moment," he said. "We are more than willing to provide any assistance in this matter. Our fleets would be glad to support Italian positions." Regarding the presence of three fleets in the Mediterranean, and the possibility of Italy mistaking their presence as a looming French invasion, the minister said, "We sincerely hope that the Pope will not call off his offensive. We will be placing one of those fleets in the Atlantic, which should ease any tensions they may have caused. We hope that the French presence will be seen as supportive, rather than invasive." Berlin Bugle: - ============= Roman Herald: - ============= Moscow Gazette: =============== R->all: Russian print strike over. R->A: The way is clear. Expect no Russian advances West. R->E: It is worth considering a deployment north without prejudice ? R->F: Salut. R->G: Me. R->I: Ciao. R->T: Thanks for that. Any help will be reciprocated if at all possible. Ankara Bulletin: ================ Italy: I will attack F AEG - Gre and F Con -Bul this turn. Please support the attack on Greece with your fleet in the Ionian and either Trieste or Greece will fall. Don't rely on France cutting Tyrolia while you cut Albania - Austria has shown an excellent grasp of tactics (wish I could say the same for myself) and can easily defeat a single loose army. Also, our aims should be limited: say one center each. Austria is still the only counter to France and England in Germany, and has to stay strong enough to form a line facing Mun and Ber. Austria can loose support for both of her fleets and still have strength to face the West. If Austria views this as more than a redress of balance, F&E will walk right through us. Austria: In the past you have grown at the expense of neighbors who were in trouble. Now you are in trouble and your neighbors can grow at your expense. Have you made any allies yet? The situation is bad now. If you continue your old policies it will change to desparate as France moves unnopposed. This is the critical point where a quick reaction proves decisive. Rather than repeat my comments to Italy, let me just say that you need four armies facing north-west, not embroiled in a confusing/losing fight down here. Give up two centers and dump the fleets. Move armies west. We can have a neutral zone in Bul&Con. If Russia makes trouble for you I will switch from supporting to attacking him. Russia: The French moves in the Med are the beginning of the end. You and I have suffered at the hands of the Austrians for a long time. Would you prefer your vengence in the form of 1) going down in flames with Austria or 2) surviving, with Austria acknowledging he needs us? I prefer the second option. Lets let him move his forces west. Germany: Ever considered the English Channel and Mid Atlantic? Your friend, Turkey.
