Diplomacy 'zine -- EP #219 Chapter Three From: mad-2@kub.nl (C. Wekx) Date: Fri, 17 May 1991 08:40:04 +0000 Issue #219 of ELECTRONIC PROTOCOL: ------------- Chapter Three ------------- This chapter contains results from SQUALANE (#45), BRUSILOV OFFENSIVE (#68), CULLODEN (#72), GANDALF'S REVENGE (#73), GOODBYE BLUE SKY (#79), PANDORA (#93), MASTERS OF DECEIT (#97) and NOW AND ZEN (#99). Table of Contents: Autumn and Winter '04 of the game CULLODEN; Spring '05 of the game PANDORA. Spring '12 of the game SQUALANE (BNC number 1990AA) (GM is burgessj@gar.union.edu/Jim Burgess) Austria : aok@mentor.cc.purdue.edu/Brian Jacobs England : pinky@vipunen.hut.fi/Tomi "Pinky" Kaartama France : richard_v._lamb@ub.cc.umich.edu/Richard Lamb Germany : gfj@attunix.att.com/Garry Johnson Italy : dmb@bigd.cray.com/David Bowen Russia : quark@bu-pub.bu.edu/Paul Fu Jr. Turkey : ykwon@roma.physics.uiuc.edu/Yongkyung Kwon Date: 13 May 91 13:20:00 EDT Dear players in SQUALANE, It's probably time to be upfront about one limiting factor on my GMing job in this game (actually, let's make that two...). On June 12 I will be leaving my network connection on a regular basis until next January. I will be able to check in for messages from time to time, but there is no way I could continue to run this game on anything like a reasonable schedule. Therefore, I've been "pushing" this game a bit to try to get it finished by that date. (point number two is that I am at my terminal only during the week which is why this message is delayed). Ted Fischer understandably is slightly upset at my calling for a standby so soon after the deadline. Since he has now submitted orders, I'd like at least to offer him the chance to remain if he wishes to do so. Otherwise, Eric Klien HAS appointed a replacement (as you all know by now) and we can proceed with the standby. Perhaps Ted could let me know his preference today and I can set a new deadline (for Wednesday, say?) and we can continue. I avoided bringing up my personal deadline before so as not to influence the play of the game, but I since have decided it is more fair to reveal it. I remind everyone that if the game has not been completed by June 12, I WILL turn it back to Eric Klien so a new replacement GM can be appointed. Since I'll be giving Eric plenty of notice, there should be no delay at that time. Thank you for your understanding... Jim Burgess (BURGESSJ@gar.union.edu) Date: 13 May 91 17:09:00 EDT The new Turkey for Squalane is ykwon@roma.physics.uiuc.edu/Yongkyung Kwon. Ted has officially resigned as Turkey. Turkey, but only Turkey, may request an extension of this deadline if he needs it. I have orders for Spring from everyone else. Welcome! GM: mad-2@kub.nl/Constantijn Wekx Spring '05 orders and press are due this Thursday May 23th at 7:00h pm MET (1:00h pm EDT). ======================================================================== Just as war presupposes the existence of the state, so the existence of the state presupposes the existence of a state of war... Because the grandeur of the state is purely relative it is forced to compare itself with that of the other... It is in vain that it wishes to keep itself to itself, it becomes small or great, weak or strong, according to whether its neighbour expands or contracts, becomes stronger or declines... War is born of peace or at least of the precautions which men have taken for the purpose of achieving durable peace. -Jean-Jacques Rousseau ========================================================================= Austria: Builds F Tri. Press: Vienna Tribune: =============== To All: This season's proof of authenticity is color. Each missive to a Great Power will contain the name of a color. I don't like indigo though, so any text from me containing the word "indigo" is probably forged. To England: Right now there's not a whole lot for us to talk about. But if you want to change our relationship for the better, I'm all ears. Feel free to captivate me with your silver tongue. To France: You aren't making much headway against Germany; Italy and I can keep him propped up indefinitely. Meanwhile, your ally is conquering the entire Arctic circle. You're probably green with envy. Why not take steps to remedy the situation? If you stab England, Italy and I can occupy ourselves with Turkey. To Germany: You've been trying to save yourself by offering to counter the Austrian threat. England and France have responded to this "danger" by confiscating your supply centers for their own use. My Fall offer is still as good as gold. I hope to see a proposal for joint action in this season's press. To Italy: I must second Turkey's recommendation that you move a fleet (presumably Naples) to the enchanting blue waters of the Ionian. We must make sure that Turkey cannot threaten our back door again. In the Spring I will move Tri-Alb. I will support F Nap-Ion with F Gre unless Russia keeps both F Bla and A Sev, in which case I will need Gre to support Bul. (In the worst case, F Alb will support you into the Ionian in the Fall.) Also, consider making moves that help Germany, like Tus-Pie. Helping Germany is our best chance for getting France to end his alliance with England. To Russia: You didn't say anything last season, so I'm waiting for your reply in this season's press. My armies are undergoing winter training and are eager to defend the white snows of Mother Russia. To Turkey: If Italy gets aggressive in the Med, then we're on different sides. But if an offensive doesn't work out, don't get consumed by red rage; help us Easterners stalemate the Deadly Duo. (Supporting Arm with Sev is a good move.) If the situation changes, we could wind up as allies. The Times: - ========== La Parisienne: ============== ITALIAN INACTIVITY CAUSES GREAT CONCERN (Marseilles, Winter 1904) The continued isolationist policies of the Italian government are becoming a thorn in the side of the French. While the President does not wish to provoke the Pope into a senseless, bloody war, he also does not wish to see Austria overrun the East with minimal resistance. "The Italians wish to be isolated from the events of the world," the President said. "However, it is difficult to be isolated when you are in the middle of everything. We hope that peace will continue to reign in the Mediterranean, but we will not stand by and watch the Austrians grow unchecked in order to preserve that peace." PRESIDENT APPLAUDS ENGLISH ACTIONS AGAIN (Paris, Winter 1904) The President expressed continued happiness with the Anglo- French alliance. The conquest of Germany is going well. We anticipate English presence in throughout Scanadinavia by next year, and hope to stabilize the uprisings in the Low Countries as well. AUSTRIAN DIPLOMATS TAUNTED (Vienna, Winter 1904) The hearts of the French diplomats bleed for the poor Austrian nation - with four neighbors, any two of which are less strong than the Austrian nation! How unfortunate. Let's look at this - one neighbor won't even breathe at you, let alone attack you; the other three are hardly threats to you, since their combined strength is roughly equivalent to yours. If only it could be so difficult for all of us! Berlin Bugle: - ============= Roman Herald: ============= To everyone: Why don't we all get together and resolve our problems like grown men. Snowball fights in the Swiss alps. I'll even bring the hot chocolate (and carrots and coal for building snowmen). Moscow Gazette: - =============== Ankara Bulletin: ================ To Austria: There is little I can do *for* you, even less I can do *to* you. If Russia disbands his Black Sea fleet I will support him in Sevastopol. Hopefully he can come to some agreement with England that takes that pressure off him. Since France is pushing through Munich, wouldn't it be nice to meet his armies somewhere west of 'here'? Don't build a fleet in Trieste (and NEVER move a second fleet adjacent to the Ionian) and we can work out a DMZ very easily. I don't like you as a neighbor - but I would like France and England even worse. You were right in saying that you only equal 55% of their combined forces, but remember there are other forces that can be used against them. Can you afford another two game years tieing up loose ends when you should be swinging about to face France? To Italy: Please reoccupy the Ionian. All those forgers last time had it right. If you want to be a buffer state, then place your units where they shield you from long range harm. A second Austrian fleet will destabilize this position and practically force France to move through you to redress the balance.
