I was particularly impressed with Walt's play from the very beginning. With I think only one or two exceptions all game, he always preferred the sure, slowly aggressive move to the long shot, gain-three-centers-this-turn move. I wasn't sure that method would work very well, but now I am convinced it certainly has its place. I think alliances and betrayals can account for the final outcome, however. Russia really never had anybody to worry about throughout the entire game. I stabbed him slightly early on, and Germany did similarly in his final moments of life. Both of these intrusions were quickly snuffed, however, by the always strong Russia. I suspect superior diplomatic abilities are due the credit for much of this success. This was my first email game of Diplomacy, and I must say it was quite enjoyable. It allowed a slow progress, but not too slow. In fact, I might venture to say that it is just about a perfect rate for play. For the most part, people responded promptly to my proposals, and only once or twice was I left terribly worried about the intentions of somebody due to their failure to respond. One thing I noticed about Diplomacy using email: if your ally all of a sudden starts agreeing with whatever you want to do, and asks for nothing in return, be VERY suspicious. This happened twice to me, and only after the second time did I realize how true this is. Is this everyone else's experience too? And finally, thanks to Geoff for keeping this whole thing going. I felt that everything went very smoothly. Thanks again to all. -- Mike Martin Heskins, France ---------------------- To all players thanks for a good game I certainly learned a lot about timing my moves. I hope I will meet up with you again in other games. On a more personal note The President of France would not have been able to make any moves this week because his wife gave birth to a lovely girl on Sunday and he is too engrossed in the new addition to the family. Martin France Sean Kiely, Turkey from Winter 1906 ----------------------------------- Just wanted to say thanks for letting me join the game. I may have screwed up, but I had fun doing it. I hope to participate in future games. In addition, let me tell you how impressed I was with the way you handled the game interface...it must be a lot of work for you, but you made it seem consistent and effortless. Really great job. Thanks, see you next game! Sean Kiely Geoff Quelch, GM for the Somme ------------------------------ First of all I would like to congratulate Martin on his new addition to the family. Secondly, congratulations to Walter Collins for completing a well executed win in the game. It is not really my place to comment on tactics in the game, since I am impartial, but what Mike Salisbury said above I think is very true. As in most postal diplomacy games it is usually the person who does most diplomacy who comes out on top. I think the win was far from inevitable, Turkey made good early running as well as France and England in the midgame, but Russia was always there close behind. It is interesting to note that the 18 supply centers gained by Russia included all of Austria, Germany and Turkey, the Balkan supply centers (excluding Greece) and two of the Scandinavian centers. This must be one of the harder ways for Russia to gain the necessary number. On a more personal note I must say have enjoyed GM this game, my first in Electronic Protocol, and I have learnt much on how to organize a complex game. I would like to thank the players who have expressed their appreciation to me, that is particularly gratifying. During the game I have received a number of suggestions for improvements in the format and type of results I sent to players. There is, as always, a balance to be struck between, comprehensive compilations, and brief indications. I must admit I lean to the former, for which I apologize. All that remains for me to do is to thank all the players of The Somme, for replying promptly and curteously to my mail, for almost always getting moves in on time, and making the game enjoyable for all of us. Lastly I must thank Eric Klien for allowing me to GM a game in his magazine, and for answering my naive questions promptly. I hope to be back in the GM business after my trip to England in mid-July.
