In the north, she has made a meager attempt to position herself to invade St. Petersburg in the Fall. This attempt is believed to have a low probablity of success, but it is also believed that this is the only possible way of deterring a seemingly unalterable eventuality. Certainly, without the assistance of the other two forces, England will be unable to prevent the Russian empire from conquering all, but instead of accepting this fate and greedily battling for a sure second fiddle position, she has decided to challenge the front-runner in the hopes of saving the rest of the world. The French attacks of late have served merely to enrage her majesty's forces and to delay any possible attempt at halting the Russian advances. Surely even with a fully cooperating French force, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to push back the Russians. As it is, it would seem that a battle for second place is the only French objective. I would think that the French people, should they have their say, would prefer to join the British against the Russian threat, but their leader has seen fit to disregard such sentiment and to act purely on vengeful folly. Should we be unable to break the Russian forces in Scandinavia this Spring, we do indeed believe that a Russian victory will be an ensured eventuality. We, the British, do believe, however, that it is better to fight for the better of the world than to fight for short-sighted gains of the present. Most sincerely, The commander of the British forces. We never expected that General Schwartzkopfsky would be so successful in his manipulation of our once tiny war machine. He seems to be creating quite a nuisance for the Turks -- some have actually now joined forces and are battling their neighbors in the name of our revered hero! We have always had excellent relations with the leadership of Turkey, and hope that there are no bad feelings over this minor error in our judgement. At this point, it seems that the only way to restore successful Russo-Turkish relations is to annex the land and bring peace and order once again to the citizens of this fine republic. I hear Greece is very lovely this time of year... Greeting reporters attending a press conference with broad smiles, the Pasha stated "Certainly, we harbor no ill will towards our northern neighbors. In fact, arrangements are being made even as we speak to provide the Overseer of Foreign Affairs of Russia with a complimentary tour of our fine Turkish prison system. Our highly trained prison staff eagerly look forward to 'showing him the ropes.' (Chuckle...)" Reporters frequently had to ask the Pasha to speak up to be heard over the distant sound of cannon fire. ****************************************************************************** To join in the fun, send your name, home address, home and work phone numbers, and country preferences to Eric_S_Klien@cup.portal.com. ****************************************************************************** If you don't own Diplomacy, you can buy it at your local hobby store or from Avalon Hill directly.
